  • We’ve been blessed with some warm November weather, but now it’s time to begin winterizing our tender bulbs for winter storage. By digging them up we have a chance to save these bulbs for planting again next year. Today, we will be digging up our Peruvian Daffodils, a variety of Dahlias, Elephant Ears and Cannas. They’ll sun harden, then be washed and sun dried for 24 hours and then packed inside cardboard boxes and plastic trays with Peat Moss and kept in our cool, dark basement over winter. Once a month we will inspect their progress and give each bulb a light water spray so they don’t fully dry up and die. Any questionable tubers will be removed.
    We recently published a 24-page Garden Video Blog Directory eBook listing over 1,000 of our garden videos each arranged by topic of interest from A-Z. If you’d like your free copy, please add the letters A-Z in the subject line of your email and send it to lynn@WisconsinGarden.com.
    Thanks for watching. Stay Safe & Healthy, Peaceful & Happy playing in your garden. Sharing goodies from our garden to yours - Lynn & Richard from WisconsinGarden.com - #KeepTheLoveGrowing

    Possibly the misshaped bulbs have been sitting on stones. Bulbs will pull or push themselves into the correct depth. Good info 👍

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  2 года назад

      Hello Pat. Normally, we would agree. Since the partially sunken barrels where filled with potting soil in spring, something else must have cause those tubers to misshape themselves since no rocks were added. It could have been one of the metal legs on the supporting cages that redirected its growth. Still a mystery of nature. Thanks for watching, sharing and caring. Lynn and Richard. I am just checking in.. I live 20 minutes from Mayfield Ky where the F5 Torrnado flattened the house. Our house is ok. We were coming back from Nashville airport on way back home and got caught between 2 tornados. had to take shelter with strangers I did not know, in Clarksville Tenn. My sister knew them and they were so gracious. We are safe and ok. I just thought I would let you know. I know you might remember I live in Western Ky.

      Hello Lana. What a horrible event of tornados and the devastation they caused in multiple states. Kentucky seems to have been hit the hardest by unprecedented December tornado that stayed on the ground for hundreds of miles. We saw more images this morning on the news. It flattened so many homes and buildings. Hope they still find survivors as winter sets in. Glad you found comfort from strangers in time of trouble. So glad to hear you are safe. Hope the remainder of the year stays safe & quiet. Thanks for checking in with us. Stay safe and Happy Holiday Season to you and yours. Lynn & Richard - www.WisconsinGarden.com

      Hello Marie. Unfortunately here in zone 5B the majority of our tender bulbs in the past froze and died, so we now make the effort to save our tender bulbs. This year we are experimenting by doing it differently than in year past. The wonderful thing about gardening is the variety of approaches gardeners make that work for their growing zone successfully. Thanks for watching, sharing and caring. What I do is have a hose with me. I dig a clump lay it on the ground hose it off clean with the jet setting. I also have a bucket filled with diluted bleach water.
    Set them to dry do on to the next one.
    I do gather them into a big tray and let them dry for 2 days. Then I take them and double wrap them in plastic wrap with an ID tag inside. Stick them into a Styrofoam cooler with the lid on. And place it in the coolest part of the basement. It is a very sucessful method and I don't divide till spring.

      Hello Barbara. Sounds like you found a great system. We were considering experimenting with plastic wrap but decided to go with Peat this year instead. Next year we will try it. Just like in the movie "Jaws", I think we're going to need a larger Styrofoam Cooler. We too wait until spring to divide if appropriate. Thanks again you for watching, sharing and caring. We’re lucky we don’t have to winterize most of our tender bulbs. In some areas, we would with the dahlias. I love the look of that Peruvian daffodils.
    I recently watched a video by “Swan Island Dahlias”. I love their simple dahlia videos. I’ve watched many dahlia videos over the years but I find theirs easier to follow for a successful growing, dividing, and much more. She said you usually find the eyes on last year’s stalk/stem. I love your setup for storing your dahlia. I saw "Dahliaholic" do something similar, so you’re on the right track.
    Great video, Lynn & Richard!

      Good morning Mary. It would be so different not having to dig up tender bulbs each year for storage. But then we wouldn't receive any tropic snow storms either. Such a dilemma! What's a north country gardener to do? Yes, those Peruvian Daffodils are pretty incredible not only their blossom but root system. And the variety of Dahlias alone is a gardener's delight. Just imagine if that's all we grew. Imagine the time digging them up each year and finding that amount of storage space. YIKES. Thank you again for you support over the years and for watching, sharing and caring. Stay safe and Happy Holiday Season to you and yours. Enjoy fall and have a great week. I enjoy your videos so much. I really miss having Dahlias. We moved into our retirement home and it is a mobile home with no garage or basement. We have an unheated shed but are in zone 5b here in southern Maine so too cold for the shed. Only option would be the fridge and apparently there is too much moisture there. I am tempted to buy 1 Dahlia in spring and give it a try in the shed with a ton of cover just in case but I am pretty sure that would not work. Hope you both have a great Holiday season and a happy New Year!

      Hello Janet. We pleased to hear you enjoy our garden videos. Ah those giant Dahlias. So very impressive and a joy to watch grow. We've heard some viewers say that they have left theirs in the ground and covered them well. With the frost line 3-4" deep around here in our zone 5b, not sure those tubers would survive. How about a closet and create a light proof box for storage as long as you only will have 1 to save? Worth a try. We still peek at ours about every 3 weeks and give them a gentle spray just to keep them from totally drying out as did several last winter. Thanks for watching, sharing and caring. Hi, Do you think a closet will be cold enough? I might try this. Our master bathroom is the coldest room in the house and we have a large closet in there. Hey, it can't hurt to try right? And if it works I can plant a few more. Thanks for the suggestion!

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  2 года назад +1

      Actually, it not about staying cold as much as staying as dark as possible over the winter so the tuber can rest. Our basement is a constant 65-70 degrees over winter. It's all about resting time for the tuber and tender bulbs. Try and see what happens and don't forget to mist at least once a month, not wet, just a misting. Let us know what happens. Have fun experimenting. L&R

    Do you dampen the burlap when you store the bulbs in the basement? Or do you spray the bulbs and peat moss directly and then cover with dry burlap?

    • @WisconsinGarden
      @WisconsinGarden  2 года назад +1

      No, we decided not to dampen either burlap or peat moss but will inspect them carefully in a month and give the bulbs directly a gentle water spray once a month and seen what happens this spring as we continue to experiment. Since the basement is cooler we think they will do well for now. Thanks for watching, sharing and caring. Stay safe. Enjoy fall or spring depending upon where you live and have a great week. @WisconsinGarden  2 года назад

      Hi LoraLee. Long answer: Richard and I are currently discussing a variety of vlog possibilities for things we've not yet addressed. After 11 years we've covered many topics on the evolution of our gardens and enjoying this brief respite.
      We are both working on some personal projects that require lots of time including new classes for 2022 specifically for a local technical college. I'll be writing another book, this one about Richard life. It will be our 90th publication.
      Currently, Richard is working on a painstaking pixel-by-pixel restoration project and digitally archiving over 400 B/W images of the Milwaukee Braves from 1953-1965. Following that he's working on a private colorful restoration project involving a collection of over 300 Lighthouses from around the USA. In addition to those, he continually creates many works of art whenever he takes a break for a few hours. I just feed him.
