@@trozonewolf8467 Probably not. In the novel, he frequently chastises Fagin for mistreating the boys. When he's on the run after murdering Nancy, he gets hidden by three other robbers. They are then rejoined by 12-year-old Charley Bates, the Artful Dodger's best friend, who jumps on him when he sees him, and starts hitting him and screaming at him for what he's done to Nancy. Bill is thrown off-guard for a moment, and then grabs the child and locks him up in a room, but it's too late and the people around have already been alerted that he's hiding here. He doesn't beat him up more than necessary, he just tries to avoid the child's blows and then he escapes.
Love the lads standing up here. Their devotion to Nancy was displayed during I’d Do Anything’ . If they could, they’d love to teach Bill a lesson themselves
@@Grandmaster_Dragonborn I know this comment is a little old, but actually in the novel, one of the boys (Charley Bates, the Artful Dodger's best friend) does throw himself at Bill Sikes and starts hitting him in rage for what he's done to Nancy when he's hiding from the authorities after murdering her. Bill seems actually sad that the boy doesn't recognize him anymore and only sees him as a monster, for a moment, and he gets heavily pushed on the floor, thrown off guard by the child's fury. He does end up overpowering him and has his knee on his throat for a while, but he's stopped by three other robbers. He then grabs him by the collar and locks him up inside a room, but it's too late as the boy's screams have alerted the people outside, who then locate Bill and chase him down, leading to his death like in the movie. He's actually not betrayed by his dog in the novel, Charley Bates blows his cover. But he still doesn't kill the boy for it.
I used to wonder why Nancy was touching her cheek with the back of her hand. Now I realise she's actually putting her arm out in defense like she's waiting for the second hit. Definitely not the first time he's hit her.
In the David Lean version, Fagin (played by Alec Guinness) threatens to harm her too, when she passionately stands up for Oliver when Fagin attempts to beat him: "Going to the poh-lice? We'll soon cure you of that, my young master!"
I’ve been watching a bunch of Oliver 1968 clips and songs and I’ve seen you comment one every single thing I’ve watched. I’m sure I even saw you comment on a Shani Wallis interview 😂
Why he was an asshole? He abused and murdered Nancy....There was nothing likable about his character! Nancy didn't deserve to be abused and she for sure didn't deserve to die for trying to do the right thing.
+The101genco That's unknown as to why Bill was like that to Nancy since Bill was the henchman of Fagin. I would have expected Fagin to be like that since he's the thief leader but, Fagin was more kind hearted. Fagin himself was also thinking about trying to escape away from Bill as in the song "Reviewing The Situation" but knew he had no place to go and no other friends in life and had no choice but to stay with the other thief kids. Also yes I agree, it was terrible that Nancy got murdered by Bill, especially when Oliver got adopted by Mr. Brownlow both Fagin and Dodger tried getting Oliver back with Nancy saying to leave Oliver alone now that he's adopted he can have a happy life. Also yes, it was very sweet of Nancy to bring Oliver back to Mr. Brownlow on the London Bridge when Bill caught her. (The only reason Bill wanted Oliver and not the other thief kids was because Bill mentioned how Oliver was the thinnest).
That is no way to treat a woman a woman should be treated with respect because I know what it's like being in a abusive relationship myself but I have moved on and got married tho we have separated we are still friends and the man who abused me is still around but I don't look at him or talk to him anymore he makes me feel sick if anyone wants to know more I will let you know what happened

I love that the boys get up after they see Nancy being hit. They would most likely see her as their motherly figure
Then that would make bill the father. He provides the discipline.....Harshly
Nah bills just an arsehole
@@trozonewolf8467 You can say that again considering the fact that bill Sykes is in fact the main villain of the film.

Oliver Reed stars as Bill Sikes in OLIVER TWIST. What an akward coincidence.

No it's not. In many versions of the book Sykes is spelled "Sikes." Just look at the comment at the bottom of the page.
