I grew up in New Albany, Indiana ... this video is taken at the intersection of 15th and Spring streets. I lived just a half block from 15th St. and the trains ran all the time. I grew up with these sounds, and it was wonderful!
Ah, nice to watch, Chris. The barking dogs, The K3, our cameras clicking away, a carload of foamers coming and going, and a paper cup (right corner) swirling in the wind around all combine for a great roll-by. I'm surprised none of my White Castle Air Releases were captured on this one!
This is so weird, strange, but awesome, to see railroad tracks, plus a train itself, running in the middle of a street, lol. That would definitely be a sight to see and watch, for sure. Question: are there any flashing red crossing gates at any of the street railroad crossings themselves?
It's too bad, this is such a beautiful scene. I live on a Canadian National main and put up a live stream to share it with others but it's not down the middle of a street. La Grange Kentucky still sees road freight down the street. I believe Augusta Georgia does as well. I'd have to look it up to be sure. Michigan City Indiana used to but I think the trackage is either bypassed or truncated now. I'm not sure if they could bypass la Grange. Csx only runs about a dozen trains a day through there and csx is a very unstable company right now. The trackage in Augusta is csx/ns shared and the only way east from their yards. Not sure what the frequency is like there but last I'd heard the railroads were making improvements to the line. All places we should visit and document before they're no more.
Probably never again. I caught them in November 2011 bringing in a long string of cars that were stored on the line but that footage is at the North Wye just a bit north of here.
I caught a southbound INRD on June 29, 2009 after he met a northbound rail train at Vernia in New Albany. This is 15th street which has been all re-paved now. You can still catch the local (J772) going through here to switch Pillsbury but that is it. From Pekin north the former Monon is used for car storage. I assume this was a train of bombs. I remember the Soo Line coming in sometimes would have a few boxcars of bombs picked up at Crane and the NS Police would have to check the seals.
The line from mitchell to louisville is not out of service but just not used. I think the last train that came threw Salem was around June 28. Now I think they use the Louisville & Indiana up to Seymour,IN then west
This is a scene that will never happen again. The future of the old Monon north of New Albany is clouded. I dont forsee the line lasting more than a couple more years until its only empty railbed. Southern Indiana is turning into a railroad wasteland much like the upper tip of Lower Michigan is now.
Awesome details in this vid! What equipment were you using? Plus, sounds like you got a 3D audio setup because I can hear a lot of abstract sounds.....Awesome.
Could a cop pull him over for running a red light or not wearing seat belts? I noticed he did not stop for the blinking red light and I know his wheels are bald. Any rear view mirrors , turn signals or brake lights ?
Sorry about that. I've added dates to every video that didn't have one already. This train was operated before shutdown, as trains weren't allowed to operate after it was placed out of service.
Neat video! I saw a photo taken from the same shot in TRAINS mag once. When you say it's "out of service" do you mean they don't do street running anymore?
Lived on locust my whole teenage years me and my little brother used to put loose change on the train tracks MEMORIES ♥️

I live up in Washington County about a half mile from these same tracks in Canton, IN. I miss the sounds of trains on them too.
My hometown. Very reminiscent of the K & I Bridge approach. Nice view of the crest of Silver Hills way in the background as well.

That's so cool! Would have loved to live on that street! Hate to hear that scenes like this will no longer take place though..

What a sight! God bless!

INRD took out the line west of Bedford almost overnight!!!!!! They sure were in a hurry to take it out....

Great video. What date was this? Was this before or after the line was placed out of service?

Yes on the rear view mirrors, you can see them as the engine passes 😉
Very cool, love that K5LA on that SD40-2. Apparently it looks like they don't follow the traffic signals like the South Shore Line NICTD does.
South Shore Line doesnt follow the traffic signals; the traffic signals follow the South Shore Line.
@BamaRailfan Ft Collins CO still has one on South Mason St Its a main for BNSF between Cheyenne & Denver
that was awesome : )
so the street running trackage is no longer used?
Trains Big and Small yes and New Albany is thinking of making it a rail trail
It is used.
Sorry about that. I've added dates to every video that didn't have one already.

Sadly that's all there has been for the last 3 years now. The Pillsbury switcher 3 days (or nights) a week.

Used to host an occasional local to the Pillsbury plant
try La Grange Kentucky for great street running and great food
This is East 15th Street.
Do u have any idea when there will be long trains like this one on 15th street
None anymore
Sounds pretty good for the fact its fouled though.
What horn was this, a K3LA?
This is a K5LA that's not sounding too good.
Its still in service a little bit
LOL train horn and the dogs bark, LOLOLOL
