Very niche film. Difficult/inappropriate to shoot in daylight. Yes, you can use a filter, but what's the point in spending money on a Tungsten film?!

I don’t know about the 800T or 50D, but I can say the BwXX is pretty solid if you shoot black & white at all

Great film in daylight and night. It is very versatile. I shoot my rolls between 400 and 800 depending on setting. Surprised no one shared it with Lucy here.
Daytime at 400 is often times wow for me. It doesn’t require a filter, but if you use one 85b is the way to go

But yes I was expecting more people to choose 800t?? although I feel like it may loose it's appeal over time as it's been kind of over done slightly on social media etc. we will see...

I think one reason (other than price) that Polaroid integral isn't a more common choice is that it's not always immediately considered a film, or a serious film. I wish I could get a roll film that renders skies and reds like the SX-70 film does. I also think that the Polaroid cameras used most commonly make it look worse. I'm not sure I can pick a favorite, really. I miss the old Portras, though 800 does have some of that magic. I think Ferrania P30 is stunning, too. So many options ...

It's funny that Kodak Gold ranked so high. When I first got back into film photography back in 2008 or so, people complained SO much about Gold and Ultramax and shunned you for using "consumer" film. My local camera store would just give me expired Kodak Gold 200 as nobody would buy it...and we used to use it as throwaway rolls for testing cameras so we didn't waste a roll of Portra, Ektar, or my personal favorite Fuji Reala 100. I have nothing against Gold mind you, but it is funny how tastes change and I think you are correct that there is a nostalgia there. I REALLY love slide film and it's probably because I sat thru SO many slide-shows from my Dad and Grandma when I was a kid.
I really do miss Fuji Reala a lot tho.

Fuji Superia 400 - Used to be my favourite cheap film until it got less cheap. A good all rounder.

Foma not just because I'm a patriot and it's dirt cheap here, but because you get quite the specific look from that stock

Great video! Please understand as you read my answer that I'm really really really old. Lol! My all time overall favorite is Velvia 50. I quite often push it one stop for the added warmth. Kodak Ektachrome is a close second. For color print, Ektar. I first started shooting it in the late 80's when it came in ISO 25 and 125. For b&w a toss up between Fuji Acros 100 and Ilford Delta 100. I have a couple rolls of HP5+ in the freezer so that may change. I shoot 35mm and 6x7 and once in a blue moon 4x5. So there ya go!😉

All my favourite film stocks lay way in the past unfortunately. Very high up there is the whole 3M/Ferrania line, often rebranded as Revue Film. The Revuechrome 3000, Revuechrome S18. Basically the whole 1970´s slide film range from 3M/Ferrania. And then of course the Agfacolor/Agfachrome films like the CT18, the CNS, more or less any Agfa film that still required the old Agfa Process. That leads me to Orwo, the UT21, UT18, NC 21, NC 16... last but not least: Kodachrome at any speed. I still shoot the K25 as Double Super 8 motion picture film, developed as black and white reversal.
My favourite currently avaliable film stock is Lomography Peackock, developed properly as slide film in E6. Surprise surprise, its an old Agfa emulsion... I also really liked Adox Color Implosion and Rollei Variochrome. As long as my lab still had their optical Noritsu minilab from 1997, I often went for Kodak Gold. But since they have closed down in May of 2021, I pretty much fully switched over to slide film, as I don't care for non-optical prints, which are now more or less impossible to get in Germany.

Polaroid pack film / FP-100 C was for sure under represented in the results, I know tons of people who would happily shoot with that and nothing else forever. Completely agree that XP2 is an under rated B&W film, its very forgiving and it has a lot of room to move with light post processing. I'm also amazed that Ultramax 400 didn't get a mention. It may not be as forgiving as Portra, however, it can be hard to tell them apart when shot properly. Also love that Lomo 400 on 120 is essentially Ultramax 400. In saying all this FujiC200 / Superia400 would be my picks if only they were more accessible.

Damn, I miss the Agfa Vista 200 and Precisa CT. 2€ for a nice color film and 6€ for a slide when I started a decade ago. They were probably rebranded Fuji Superia 200 and Provia 100 but they were great nonetheless. Also when you see the kind of results you could get with Fuji FP100 and other "high quality" instant films you sadly notice how much we've lost in that field. Polaroid or Lomo Graphlock + Instax is far from a 4x5 loaded with Polaroid type 55. Sometimes you do really wish you were old (and richer to afford to try all that)...

What a cool video, thanks for featuring my photo, Lucy! I feel silly for writing Kodak Gold 400 and not 200, though 🤦‍♂️ Hearing people describe their favourite qualities of various film stocks is a gold mine for inspiration, definitely a video I'll revisit in the future 👏
It's interesting to me the Polaroid videos don't get as much engagement, as Polaroid and Instax were our gateway drugs into 35mm photography last year. I have done some street photography with the Instax SQ6 before, but now that we have a 35mm SLR, the instant cameras feel mostly like special occasion cameras for social events. That said, seeing people react to the photo appearing before their eyes is magical (particularly with instax where you don't have to keep the photo in a pocket for ten minutes) and completely unique to instant film 😊

Yes I agree with you on the polaroid front, we keep it as mostly special occasions or for portraits of a special time like birthdays etc. its just so expensive!

@@LucyLumen Happy to hear I'm not alone with the photography lingo 😄
I've found that the cost of film, developing and lab scans of a 36 roll of Kodak Gold is about the same price per shot (6 DKK/1.25 AUD) as Instax square (6.5 DKK/1.40 AUD) when I get a double pack of film. 35mm exceeds the cost with all the other film stocks I've tried so far. I'd like to try camera scanning to save money, but as someone who only uses a computer as an electronic typewriter it's quite intimidating 😅
Instax square is smaller than Polaroid, but the price, development time, colour and reliability all trump Polaroid in my book, so give it try if you want to do more instant film ✌😊

yes, HP5+ is a very versitile film, haven't shot it, but from youtube test videos, the grain is good 2 stops low (200 vs box 400), pulling is better at 5 stops (3200, BUT at over 1600 the grain affects the image- like digital noise); also colour casts develop at the extreme end of 3200 aka like old film, magenta cast starts to appear.

Fomapan 100 was the cheapest film I could find. So out of the 4 rolls of film I have so far shot 3 of them have been fomapan 100.
(The fourth one is hp5+ but that is currently in the tank developing as I write this so I can't judge it yet.)

Sorry I missed this when it came out. I was in hospital, so I couldn't do too much!!! :P Anyway, B&W films for me are HP5 and XP2 for most shoots, but I do go for Foma 100 and 400 if I want to go on the cheap. They're good films. Colour films, I tend to go for Ekta and Gold, although Ultramax isn't too bad either. For medium format work, I use Fuji Pro 400H, if I can get it, but usually it's Ekta for colour. B&W it's the same as for 35mm. Large format I use Ekta for colour and HP5/Delta 100 for B&W. Although, I also have an interest in Foma 100 and 400, because they're cheaper and do give good results. But, I'll try any film stock once, and if I like it I'll use it again. Never been a brand snob and if I find a film that works for me, I don't care who makes it. So long as it gets the job done.

FP100c is a Polaroid medium format stock. It's a bit bigger than a 6x9 and was designed to go with the Polaroid 900SE/Mamiya Press cameras. I have a Universal Press, I just couldn't see the point in getting a pack film back for it when it was around... Fuji discontinued it about five or six years ago and the prices have been going crazy since.

HP5 and TMax 100 and 400 are great because it comes in 35, 120 and 4x5 sheet film. I have just recently started experimenting with 4x5 and its nice to be able to get a film that I'm used to shooting in other formats.

before film has skyrocketed and have came back in demand, color plus to me was like the mcchicken of film. It was really cheap and could help get you by, also the retro/nostalgic and vibrant rendering of the film was my go to. It ain't no portra but it's enough to make you think the film is high end. Sadly I rarely shoot with it because it's expenisve now and runs out. I will also say that lomo 800 is extremely underrated and a portra killer with it's own characteristics.

I’m guessing that those of us who grew up in the film era won’t have any great attraction to Kodak Gold or Fujicolor. I have albums full of the stuff processed and printed by cheap mini labs with nothing much to commend. I’m guessing the film shots I’m seeing in this video, which do look wonderfull, are digitally scanned which was something not available till the early 2000s just as film started to die out. Scanning gives much greater control and can produce much greater colour saturation and detail compared to a mini lab print. As for film stocks, I liked Ektar 100 just for something different but from memory it didn’t have a lot of latitude for reversal film. Kodachrome 64 and 200 professional are something to behold. One you have viewed a well exposed slide on a light box through a loupe there is no going back. I also liked Ektarchrome T which is Tungsten balanced. I shot a reel in the NG Victoria once and the slides looked great.

    • @LucyLumen
      @LucyLumen  Год назад +1

Yes I have only experienced film being devved at my lab who do incredible scans. My partner is older than me and he remembers slide nights at home etc. and more of what you are talking about.
I absolutely adore Ektar and use it a lot. I have a video on my channel where I shot ektachrome 64 t and had it cross processed and I loved the results! Very cool film stock. I guess now everyone just wants some kind of film haha it’s so hard to get anything right now!!

Lucy I enjoyed your video and seeing so many young people trying film. Film stocks have interesting history as they have morphed into what we have available today. Unfortunately, we’ve lost so many film stocks over the years both, in 2 ¼ and 35mm. If you get a chance you should reach out to Leslie Lanzenby at the FPP (film photography podcast). Leslie is definitely the best Film historian as well as having a plethora of film developing knowledge, including information about the various film stocks we’ve both lost and kept over the years. Check out episode #256 June 15, 2020. I think you’ll find it interesting.

porta 400 is just way too overpriced
it is an amazing film but in my opinion it's just way too ridiculous here in europe to afford a roll of film, kodak gold is just more affordable and good for less professional use in general.
Same with kodak tri-x/t-max compared to ilford 400 etc. Most people also think more expensive film will give better results but everything is very situational and versatile in usage.
