    Update - As of Sep 2019, I've only pulled up the chevelle (a few times) and a 73 Charger. To my knowledge it still works fine. It's been a while since I used it. Even if it crapped out now, it was worth the $50. Easier than using a come-a-long.

    If you use a snatch block to do a double line pull. It's easier on the winch, plus twice the pull power.

      @@jimsmith9819 yeah I haven't used it in a few years. I thought it was dead. Took it apart and the wiring on the back of the power side stud was broken. Just got it back together. Going to start using it again.

    Hell yeah! I bolted this winch to my garage floor. I pull my car projects back inside the garage with it. I knew when I saw this setup, it would pull this chevelle with no problem. The reason it keeps stopping & starting in your video, is because the wireless remote starts doing that when your out of range. When your no more than 15ft away it stops doing that. I pull my heavy truck in & out of the garage probably 20 times without the battery every starting to drain.

    • @Ka_Gg
      @Ka_Gg  5 лет назад

      I was letting off the controller. It wasn't the winch doing it.
      But yeah it entertains me when someone spends $800 on a fancy winch just to pull up a Civic once or twice a year. This is only like $40 more than a come a long and way better.
      Good to hear that yours has lasted soi long

  • @jasonsprouse2803
    @jasonsprouse2803 3 года назад +2

    That winch is straining WAY too hard. First, they need full voltage, not just hooked up to an old battery with jumper cables. Second, you need to make sure the wire rope is wound evenly on the drum (not piled up on one side like this one is). Lastly, if you are going to use an undersized winch, use a snatch block to half the line speed.... I had a guy buy a car from me that had been sitting for 20 years, he had a similar setup..... the winch was stalling out.... I went and got my snatch block and set it up, and surprise surprise, by cutting the line speed in half, it vastly increased the actual speed of the winch (because it was no longer overloaded).

    • @Ka_Gg
      @Ka_Gg  3 года назад +1

      This was just a test to see if it could do it. Don't think too much into it. Obviously it's an undersized winch. Just curious to see if it could do it.

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 3 года назад

      If they rate it CORRECTLY, then it should be able to provide 2500 lbs of force which means that it would lift 2500 lbs vertically... If a car has tires aired up very firmly and is on a level hard surface, it doesn't take many pounds of force to move it... Discounting friction, it's a function of the angle of the incline that you are moving the object up... Take the sine of the angle of the incline (with 90 degrees being vertical and 0 degrees being perfectly horizontal) and you can determine the effective weight you would be pulling against... Let's say that you have a 30 degree incline (which is quite a bit more than he is using here)... The sin(30) is 0.5 and multiplied by 4000 lbs (assumed weight of vehicle), that means that you would need a winch that could pull over 2000 lbs. If you drop the angle down to 15 degrees, you would need 1035 lbs of force.
      Now, as far as the angle he was pulling, that can be calculated by taking the arcsine(height of the ramp / length of ramp)... Assuming a 6 ft ramp and a height of 1.5 ft, that would work out to be 14.48 degrees... Or you could just calculate it as (1.5 / 6 ) * 4000 = 1000...
      Of course, flat tires and pulling across turf add quite a bit of friction, but these calculations are simple enough to do that you can use it to see if it is even theoretically possible to use a winch for a particular task in a best case scenario...

      For the winch, Harbor Freight sells mounts (roughly $5) for this particular winch. IIRC, I bought 2.
      I drilled the 3 or 4 holes into the trailer. I used longer bolts and had 1 mount between the winch/trailer and 1 mount on the underside of the boards so the pressure would be more even and the bolts wouldn't come through any holes in the wood.
      So, here's how it is.

      I tried installing mine on my trailer with deck nails but it didn’t work and my nephew lost an eye when the winch yanked clear off the deck. I think either use liquid nails glue or maybe screws. My sister still won’t talk to me because my nephew is getting picked on at school due to the accident. Kids can be such little monsters. They call Franky “Rocky The Cyclops” because of his missing eye and slightly dented orbital bone. Anyway, message me if you need any other mechanical advice. I’m still new to using tools but really enjoy noodling with these doodads. Just picked me up one of those oscillating saws. I’m thinking about using it to saw open the top of a propane tank to use as a shop garage trash can. Then I’m going to paint it with flowers and glitter.

      No. I like to buy and sell vehicles a lot and I did very well on this car. I got it lot running and driving. I think it had been sitting for 10 or 20 years before I got it.
      Had about $2400 in the Chevelle... Then traded it for a Harley and $1,500. Then, I traded the Harley for $2,000 and a 6.0 3/4 Chevy truck. I still have the truck and should be able to easily sell it for $3,000.
      This Chevelle just needed a lot of everything period it would have been cool just to get it driving reliably and drive it as is. the sad thing is that fixing these cars up oftentimes take significantly more than buying one that's already built.

      Thanks, I couldn't find a video of what I needed and thought others would benefit from it. So far, I've only pulled up that chevelle and a 73 Charger (complete car) and it did well both times. It doesn't seem to get too hot either. After pulling for 20 seconds or so, I'll stop and let it sit for a few seconds just in case. I can't complain for $50! A lot nicer than using a come a long.
      If I were to use a winch every day, then I would have a better one. I have no idea how this would do with a car that has locked up brakes or anything. These cars all had air in their tires, but the winch never seemed like it got to a point where it was going to stop or break. So far, I"m surprised.
