Thanks for posting this. Once Grandma Kate was gone, AMC wasn't quite the same. And now, without any of the older generation featured (unless you want to consider Erica), the show lost its balance and I lost interest. We miss you Kate, Mona, Phoebe, Charles, Langley, Joe, Ruth, and Paul!
And the funny thing is she was the third actress to play Kate, yet she was the one viewers loved. She was one of a kind. That little montage they made of her work was absolutely perfect.
@@fwdthinker Nope. There were three. They were all in 1970. Christine Thomas from January to early February 1970, then by Kate Harrington from February to October 1970, and finally by Kay Campbell, from October 1970 to April 1985.
This woman had soap opera credentials both in radio and television for decades. From Wiki: " In 1948, she began playing Lola Conway in Katie's Daughter on NBC. She played Laura Richardson on Lonely Women in 1942-1943 and Evey Perkins on Ma Perkins from 1945 to 1960 and was a member of the cast of The Flying Patrol in 1941-1942 and Sweet River in 1943-1944. Her first regular televised serial role was as Helene Benedict on The Guiding Light from 1957 until 1964. She went on to play Rose Pollock #3 on The Edge of Night. She had retired following her role on The Edge of Night but she was coaxed out of retirement by soap opera writer and producer Agnes Nixon, who had created the role of "Kate" especially for Kay Campbell on the soap opera All My Children. Contrary to popular belief, she was not the first actress to play the role. Kate Harrington originated the character, was recast with Christine Thomas, who was in turn recast with Campbell. She portrayed Kate Martin from mid-1970 to her death in 1985.]
I think why she was so loved was she was an amazing Mother, Grandmother and Mother In Law who never caused problems with Ruth as Lady of The House. Bert Bauer from Guiding Light could have learned from her.
This was a wonderful tribute to Kay Campbell. If only the lives of Phoebe, Myrtle and Palmer had been similarly honored when their portrayers passed away. Typical of the bad writing that killed AMC, a few reminiscences were just squeezed in around "business as usual" scenes. So sad.
Kate Martin was the ideal mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend. She always cared about her family and friends. Though a supporting character, her absence was keenly felt.
Its amazing how most of the actors on here are the over 40 crowd. Today, that wouldn't be the case. Even though this show was in its prime, the executives at networks think we want to watch shows with 20 somethings now.
What's interesting here is how quickly (for lack of a better word) AMC responded to Kay Campbell's passing, as this aired less than two months after her accident. Compare this tribute to GL, for example, where the show waited an entire year to acknowledge the passing of Charita Bauer (Bert Bauer) and even then only after the fans protested.
Now that is how a person should be honored in death. What a wonderful character and wonderful woman. Sad that so many of her mourners have also passed on.
I didn't start Watching AMC until 1995 so only knew Kate from flashbacks. But thanks to great posts like this on youtube I was able to get to see her! Thanks so much! It was sad to learn the reason for her funeral on AMC was due to Kay Campbells death after an auto accident. Found a NY Times article explaining it: www.nytimes.com/1985/05/30/arts/kay-campbell-is-dead-at-80-actress-on-all-my-children.html
Ok, did anyone else laugh when "little" Charlie complimented Erica, since years later he and Erica had a fling??? On top of that, how is he Tara's son? He looks about 14 or 15 here. WTF???
This was back in the day when long time characters were given a proper funeral. Helen Wagner (Nancy Hughes on As The World Turns)for 54 years was given the tackiest tribute. This woman held the Guinness Book record for the longest time playing the same character on an American soap. She needed to have a proper send off.
They either brought her loved ones back or mentioned why they weren't there, quite a contrast to Stuart's recent funeral, where Hayley and Skye were not even mentioned. This is a very moving clip, although I'm surprised to see Nancy Frangione as Tara. Karen Gorney wouldn't come back? How odd for Nancy to go from a character like Cecile on AW to going back to Tara. It's like night and day.
LGM429, I am so definite agreement with you on this one. Ruth Warrick was an original cast member of AMC; Eileen Herlie was on for over 20 years; and so was James Mitchell. They gave more than a lot of years to that show, and they should have received a PROPER send-off, not any of that business as usual stuff too. I especially think that Phoebe, being an original character, should have been given a better reminiscence and send off.
Not entirely true, where Phoebe said, "moments like this make our differences so inconsequential." Some differences are anything but petty over a lifetime of repeated issues.
This had more in common with Joey & Dorian on OLTL. Erica married Phil Brent, her high school crush, then had a relationship with his son Charlie. Dorian went after Joe Riley while he was married to Viki right after Kevin was born and also dated Clint prior to his marrying Viki and adopting Kevin and Joey.
God Almighty you tension with Tara & Erica was so bone chilling. I wish that Karen Lynn Gorney had come back for the Show. To me she was the "Only" Tara. The Grandmothers of US Soaps from back in the day were so loving, warm and kind. You couldn't put these ladies on a UK Soap like Coronation Street or even Eastenders, they would freak out since crime, and unemployment was rampant in England in the 1980's.
When they did get Karen Lynn Gorney back it was so disappointing. It was more about Kelsey and her baby drama. I wanted to see her pay the fabulous La Kane a visit and pop her one for screwing her son. But I don't believe they had one scene together. Crazy because she and Lucci were original cast members. How could they deny that history and not play on it?
The only prob is that all of the longtime characters that died all died in their sleep. Not realistic. Kay Campbell was killed from injuries she sustained in a massive car crash.
Most older people do die in their sleep and not from massive car crashes. It would have been very insensitive to Kay Campbell’s family to have her die the same way on the soap.
@@travisjames3517 Soaps aren’t about reality. They’re an idealized version of it. Grandma Kate’s death was done in a way that was respectful to everyone. What you describe sounds like the way soaps are written today which is why nobody watches them and they’re all barely clinging to life

I’ll never forget that episode and the way she blows a kiss goodbye at the end.❤️
AMC really knew how to make the audience feel as if you lost a loved one when a longtime character passes.
AMC was perhaps better at that than any other soap.
I so agree. Lots of flashbacks when these legends died. First Kate then Charles then Mona then Phoebe then myrtle.
@@seanm6215 I'm watching all the deaths from those Legends now and they are so sad to relive them, yet Comfort Inn to see them again
Never gets any better than this, what a show it was in its prime
Kate was the pillar of the community and the best part of humankind...very big loss when she died.
This kills me everytime and I lost my VHS copy of this in a move so thank you for letting me see her and cry again for our Gran!!!!
I couldn't agree with you more Brian! I'm crying right with you!

Great seeing this memorable AMC moment! Thank you for posting!
What a blast from the past! Great to see them!
LOVE That Song Playing In The Background: It's Beautiful!!!
Grandma Kate always reminded me of my dear Grandma who passed away when I was age 6.
These scenes must be difficult for the cast; not only are they mourning "the character" but also the actor they worked with for so long.
Thank you! It was so fun to see these people again. : D

This is why AMC has been cancelled. They got rid of Brooke, Mark, Paul, Hillary and Tom. These people should have carried on the torch.

This is great but I sure wish I could find the funerals of Jenny and Jesse!
The name of the song is "I'll See You Again"; does anyone know who is singing this version?
Sound hound says Norrie Paramor
Norrie Paramor was a male orchestra leader. His orchestra could have provided the music but he’s not the singer.
