    Perfect. Just an FYI. Paint the barrel à dark color. White barrels can make it easier for algea to form inside if in direct sunlight.

    If you're giving that water to your chickens, you should consider painting the barrel black to keep algae from forming in your water.

      City water has chemicals that hurt soil biome and plants suffer needing more fertilizer. Cash cow not for us. Primary water and artesian wells. The earth has endless water under the ground

    It looks nicer and works better than mý rain collecting system. I up a triangular beige waterproof canvas tarp, hanging from 5 tall metal poles, and it drains the rainfall down into a large, new open trash can lined with a heavy plastic bag, and the water that's collected gets put into large plastic containers which I carry around to water my veggie garden.(good exercise) Its a temporary system that works well for now and the $20.00 tarp is big enough hanging over all my strawberry plants protecting them from extreme heat that none have died, the extra shade has them sending out new shoots, more than before the tarp was over them last year. I only have about 75 two gallon containers of water for now. I have hung up other tarps cooling my deck and back yard, and its the coolest place in my neighborhood. But its fun and its temporary.

    How do you clean the barrel? So you have some sort of removable trap for leaves or sand that may flow with the water?

      Empty it and pressure wash it, probably, unless there's a side that opens completely. Just make sure to use a softer nozzle and wear ppe in case of surprise backshot.

    My concern is that since it's a white barrel, sunlight still passes through and could promote unwanted algae growth

      Totally! I’m getting a black cover for it and would recommend people do as well 👍🏼

      Algae grew in some of my white plastic 2 gallon water storage, but would that harm plants I water with it ,or would it add nutrition ?

    • @joshuaszeto
      @joshuaszeto Год назад

      @@jeannetemplin9706 algae in the water absorbs nutrients and doesn't leave much or any for the plant you're watering. Algae also produce toxins that aren't good for humans or pets. Plus it smells pretty awful

    Are you in an area with freezing/what do you do in winter? My T-valve cracked even after draining over my 1st winter. Haven't had the heart/energy to redo it all 😅

    Should grey water like rainwater be temp controlled since it is basically stagnant? Or treated in some way?

    So the barrel is used upside down, correct?

    Either get another barrel for the overflow or let it go into the ground like normal.

      No " skeeters" if you don't mind putting a circular cut piece of window screening over it held securely with wire around it holding it onto the top of the collection container and empty the collected rain water into smaller lidded bottles each time it rains, I don't mind the extra work. Some will some won't. I Love not having to pay for all the water, and its chemical free too, makes it worth it for me. (Retired finally).

    Amazing how much money you can save , by saving rain water from just one day of rain is enough to flush toilets wash clothes and clean house for a MONTH (1-rainy day) so why is it banned in many States (USA)????
