- Опубликовано: 11 май 2024
- Today I’m setting up a simple Rainwater Harvesting System on the Shipping Container Playhouse project I built a few years ago. In the video I’ll go over installing the gutters, down spout pipe, leaf guard, first flush system, water tank, inlet and overflow pipe…. As well as important things to consider before installing a rainwater harvesting system.
I hope you and enjoy and please let me know if you have any questions! - Joe
I also want to thank Tank Depot for sponsoring this video. Here is a link to their rainwater harvesting and water tank offerings.

17:13 but in the future, you might need to take it off, what you really had to do is place it further apart so it rotates
Have you heard about the fog nets that harvest water.?
NICE YOU HAVE ALL THE PIECES TO ASSEMBLE IT.
This channel is a real stress buster.. Calm narration really helps the viewers calm down and so much less drama... Keeping stuff natural and simple. 👍

Yessss!! I watched about 10 videos in a row before bed the other night. Very calming 😌🙏🏼
You're just high
You are such a great teacher-always making it easy for us "more challenged" DIYers to figure it out! Great video! :)
Awww thank you MMx3😊🙏
Imagine trying to harvest rainwater on such hm ? Small area in dry area. Does it even have sense ? Will this tank fill over a year ?
@@CastewaPL it’s a small structure for sure….but I’ve already got collection on all of my other structures so this was a good opportunity to do a set up video. As for the filling up. Yes it will.
The roof space is approx 90sqft, which means that for every inch of rain I will collect approx 54 gallons. And our monsoon season can often get anywhere from a 5-6 inches to as much as nearly 20” like some places around here did last monsoon. So at a 300 gallon tank size, it would take approx 6” to fill it.
Great video, I have a 3,500 square feet shop and I am having a hard time finding a tank in middle TN. Where can I get the metal tanks that ship well because they are put together on site. I believe those tanks come in pieces. Thank you
@@mrtennessee6862 tank-Depot sells all sorts of tanks….including metals ones. Check out the link and just search under tanks and you’ll find the metal ones

Your installation is so neat and tidy. You even did not let the PVC cement mess up your pipe, Kudos. I learned a lot.
What a clean clear installation! You don't repeat yourself, so well spoken. Thanks for the info and demo; love the kit.
The best video for water harvesting I’ve ever seen. Thanks.
Those kits look awesome. Makes it easier for dummies like me.
Yeah, definitely a turn key option to help you get everything lined up
Thank you! This is a straight forward and detailed video which will help greatly for when we start all our off grid hidden valley farms and retreat cabins on the property.
Love your voice, tone, pace and demeanor. I could listen to you speak all day. Clear, professional and on target. You don't ramble. Appreciate that. Thanks for sharing, I learned a lot. I am wondering why you wouldn't push some flexible tubing over the first flush outlet and plumb it into the overflow pipe so you don't create erosion under the platform and further use all that water.
I think it's been a while since I commented on one of your videos, and I just wanted to reiterate that you're doing great work. Your videos are interesting, well presented, and down-to-earth. Thanks for making these.
Looking to snag two of these; one for my shop, the other for the home. Seems like a no-brainer to have a rain collection point. Saves water, and you’re utilizing a resource that would otherwise wash away. Thank you for the video!
I really appreciate the amount of editing that went into this video, great work Joe!
Great. هذا إنجاز عظيم لتجميع مياه الأمطار. أشارك الفيديو للجمهور في الجزائر.
Thank you! And great to hear from Algeria 🇩🇿 😊🙏
That system is really cool. Thanks for sharing the video!
So helpful I formation. Thank you. Looks very easy. ❤ I'm still collecting ideas, and this is one of the best.
Well done! Nice setup!
Very helpful and informative video. Thanks very much from Scotland 😊
A nice trick for starting the hole in the tank with the hole saw is to run it reverse to get the cut started. Bad things can happen running a large hole saw forward when starting the hole, and hard to get it started exactly where you want it. I've installed hundreds of tanks and it really helps.
Nice work. Maybe a little overkill on the pipe diameter ;)
Haha….yes, very much overkill on the pipe size. But this was the only structure I had to do it on as my house, shop, and pretty much every other structure already has tanks and collection setup. So this was more of a demonstration opportunity to show the kit and also add a system to the container playhouse….even if it is capable of a lot larger volumes from a larger structure😉
@@homesteadonomics Major props to you for doing all that water harvesting. If we can get a million or two people on board maybe we could help return the Colorado river to its former glory.
Thank you for showing this process so completely. I've been considering adding a similar system to my 10x20' workshop and this is super-helpful! Great video, as always!
Thank you and that sounds like a perfect opportunity to get a good amount of water!
We’re learning so much from you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the great videos, super well explained. Clear and straightforward. Loving every minute! Warm greetings from Bali.
I like the overflow pipe...a lot!
Thanks!
What a professional and detailed install. Very impressive. Thanks for sharing
The most detailed and easiest instructional video on rainwater harvesting. Thank you.
Many yrs ago I lived off grid in the mountains on a ranch in another Dry state - before Off Grid became a Fad & now what everyone seems to be hoping to do as a life saver in a desperate world. My how Xs change. Wait til the realize / ITs not EASY...
We could have used rain catchment back then.
Also wanted to add that your great videos offer another slant from the comment section - its a pretty good source of Amusement to some of us @ advanced age.

Also viewing some comments from some states that let us know - not all Americans (some states) are as free as others. Codes / etc. Like its against their Codes to collect Rain water!
How Biazzre. 🤔 ❓
Nice, smooth and easy to follow diy guide to the installation process. I love the way you build like a craftsman, surgeon and shop teacher, all rolled into one. This is how DIY RUclips videos should look like.
Thanks for the offer, but we don't use Telegram. We're happy to just learn from your homesteading experience as we prepare for our own homesteading journey.
@@alanmcrae8594 hi Alan,
Sorry you got that spammer bot message. They occur on RUclips quite frequently these days unfortunately. And most often I can get to them before they accumulate. But I’ve been camping out of cell reception for the past week or so…. So now I’ve got quite a few to remove🤦♂️😂
I was directed here via a link in a Tank Depot email. I got a lot of inspiration from you about 5 years ago (circa the native corn patch irrigated off the driveway days!) and was stoked to see you pop up in that email. Congrats and thanks for what you do.
Just typed in rainwater harvesting. This video came up. Just wanted to say wonderful video. Great narration. Didn't over explain or under explain. The system is too large for ne right now but in the future I will strongly consider this company based on this video. Thank you. I hooe the company sees these comments.
Very nice!
This is a great addition to the playhouse/tiny house and the kit seems really accessible for beginning rainwater harvesters.
It is! Kinda reduces the ‘fudge work and figuring’ from the process. Of course there will always be a little bit of that since everyone’s place will be slightly unique to their surroundings, etc,.
So inspiring! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent.
Thank you! Thank you! I appreciate the demonstration. Hubs & I bought a 1550 gallon water tank to be installed for home use, after our small home is built (on raw land, trying to clear). I was checking out Australia YT videos on how to install a water tank. Some YT-ers (US) spend 35+ minutes demonstrating how to install but don't really show all the components or really demonstrate the procedure of water harvesting. Ugh!!! So frustrating! So, thank you again. We live where we get rain throughout the year (summers can be drier though & 2 months of possible snow in winter) & plan on getting another 1500 gallon water tank to collect enough water, plus any other buildings to collect water from for future animals we hopefully will be getting so they can have water... (chicken coops, goat pens, etc.) Great video!!!!!! 👍👍👍
Very informative. This kit looks better than what I was going to do. The kit will be on my list for the project this spring. Thank you!!
I always love watching your handy work, so clean and professional.
NICE JOB !!
GOOD INFORMATION !!
Catching up now from the last month. Pleasantly surprised with the amount of content!! Love it!!
Still loving life in Show Low.
Thanks for your videos and inspiration
That is so great to hear Ben! I’ll be up in your neck of the woods camping later this summer. Beautiful area for sure😊🙏
@@homesteadonomics I'll look for ya at home depot.lol
This is so awesome! You do such a great job of explaining! ❤️😊💜
Great and clean job appreciations for good video and the good tips 👌🇩🇰👍🙏
Love these water storage videos!!! 👍👍👍
for version 2.0, at 18:48 , install some flashing material to protect the siding. thanks for sharing this project, i learned much!
As always great how to with informative pointers.
Inspired! Thank you! I’m dabbling with the same…. This is helpful to me. Great job.
Good work sir
Great idea. I have, in addition to the house that has gutters, a separate building that used to be a "horseless carriage" garage, from the early 1900's, that doesn't have them. I've been thinking of adding them there to gather even more water.
If you use gutter guards or gutter screens you will not have much worry about leaves and debris that is larger than a needle size. Great collection idea...
The corrugated iron roof and tank setup is exactly how rain water is harvested in Australia. 🙂🦘🇦🇺
Another great video. Always talk about this when my wife & I talk about building a shed.
Thank you Jerome!
Thank you for your video I set my system up but did something wrong and picked it up on your video now it runs like a dream thank you
Perfect video man. It had inspired me to go ahead and install a system at my house
I especially enjoy the rainwater harvesting videos. I hope this monsoon season is being a good one for you.
So far it’s been pretty decent. Started earlier than normal. Now we just gotta pray that it doesn’t fizzle out😂🙏
This was so easy to understand in a stress less manner
This was great! I have it saved for future use!
Love your tutorials, thanks so much!
Thank you for sharing God bless you and your family and protect you Open up my mind with everything going on in THIS world God continue guyding your life🙏🙏
Very thorough demonstration . Out here in Commiefornia this is probably "illegal" . That aside it doesn't seem that complicated to set up . I think I would need to make any catchment system winterproof . Thanks again .
Wow that leaf guard is so smart!!
It is really well designed! And works great!
nice for you to add, now if the tanks were not so high!
Nicely done and explained. Very motivating.
Very cool kit. Give me some good ideas of how to improve my system.
This video was just what I needed! Thank you!
Love it - you should talk with the container guy so they could incorperate this with a 20' solar container system...
Good project sir,...very clear explanation regarding detail installation. Thank you, 👍👍
Great content, enjoyed and learned something new. Thank you
Beautiful toutorial! Thanks a lot, brother.
Thank you for the step by step, it helped me see just how easy the system is and how it works; and a good source for the parts too. I'm hoping there is a way to make this work with IBC totes as they are readily available to me and a good deal more affordable than the Hessco style tanks.
Very informative video. Thanks for sharing
Very good and informative. Thank you.
What a great video, just when you think hooking up a tank and associated pipework is basic. Saves a lot of future problems from happening. I notice all the cool accessories, like the tank gauge was my favorite. Don't think we can buy that one here in Australia. Well done.
A very simplified demonstration
Clean well laid out project and video!
Thank you for the great info!👍
Gr8 job. Thanks for the info!
Thanks for the information it really helps me.
Thanks. One of the best overview videos I have seen. Thank you.
Thank you very much!
I collected rainwater in barrels 70 years ago. Greetings from Poland.😄
Excellent narration. Thanks
Great setup and video. One thing I would do is connect the first flush to the overflow pipe to prevent any pooling below, which could lead to foundation erosion or wood rot pending materials. This would also help with any insects that thrive around water keeping them further from the collection tank and building.
Very nice install !
Thank you for posting this video. It was very helpful. I believe in what you're doing. I did subscribe.
Love watching this video.
I got some good ideals from your video. I can not afford the complete systems so I improvise with what I can afford. I would had put my ditch further away from the leg of your tank platform. At 8 point something a pound for a gallon of water, there will be a lot of weight on the legs of your platform. Just something that got my attention. Have a great day.
Woe Awesome video!!! Great instructions and to the point. Love it!!!
Great stuff. Well articulated, simple and beneficial = subscribed.
Great instruction! Thanks
adequately and tremendously! Promising desires 👌👍
Thanks for sharing! I always learn something from watching your videos. Cheers!
Thank you!
Your narration is great! I have little faith in that plastic lasting more than a single Florida summer. If the wind and storms don't kill it the unmitigated sun certainly will.
Happy rainy day hope you get a lot.
Thank you! Great job...
Thanks for the excellent video, it gave me some new ideas.
This system really looks good. Years ago I set up a first flush system on 2 downspouts. 1 to an IBC the other to a 3 55 gal barrel set up daisy chain style. I think the gods saw this and cancelled all scheduled rain for 2 years. Maybe I need to go out and wash a car or two.
Absolutely Brilliant 🥳🥳🥳
Great video! I just stumbled across it. Now, I’m subscribed. Thank you and God bless!
Thank you! And May God Bless you and your family as well!😊🙏
Great video. Need to set up a system for my chickens’ water bar.
Thanks! And yes, they’ll love you for it 👍
Thank you for the video.
