    As a US worker, I've been fed the pablum of the CIA talking points all my life, and it took me awhile to see it. Now that I do, I've been researching what's happening in China, and I'm so impressed! You ended poverty for God's sake! You grow fruit trees in the desert! I encourage my fellows to look at China differently. We, the working class are very interested in changing how the US operates. I think it'll be awhile, but I believe we'll get it done.

So it has been trying to contain China in various ways (remember the Opium War?) from time immemorial, to no avail.

  • @aprilsim7604
    @aprilsim7604 5 лет назад +49

    Mr Jacques, in short US attitude towards China is - condescension. Agree on that.
    You are right that China is a perceived threat by the US. It dawned on them that China is fast overtaking them as the world's largest economic powerhouse, and its military capability, land, sea & air, to protect itself & its assets, investments & partners is quite formidable & rapid. The US does not see that any apparent threat that China poses to American interests is really self-inflicted. It just does not like playing second fiddle!

    • @brocklanders6969
      @brocklanders6969 5 лет назад +2

      Wrong. US attitude towards China isn't condescension, it's naivety. It has been long thought that helping improving China's economic standing would bring about peaceful, organic democracy. That was the thought of Clinton, Bush and Obama -- they all let China get away with economic murder to the US and corporate America was on board because they could move manufacturing to China to lower cost and also sell goods to the Chinese -- all to the detriment of US workers and middle class. It is not a negative reflection of the Chinese citizens, who are viewed as smart and hard working. However, the Chicom government is viewed and dangerous and corrupt -- and rightfully so and our leaders were to naive to figure that out till it was too late.

    Very informative video, and great explanation by Prof Martin Jacques. He raises a great point in that the self-centric way that Westerners typically view non-western countries, through the lens of western values, leads to their misunderstandings. "These people do not match up to my values that I consider universal and superior, therefore they are weird/uncivilised/undeveloped". In this way it is particularly evident in media that POC only gain representation when they follow a western mindset and culture. The spread of this ideology along with Christianity wishes to dominate the whole world and wash out local culture. But there's a force that can challenge this idea of there being One Right Way - and that's China.

      @@eklavya83 Tibet was annexed all right, by India. At least part of Tibet. In 1951, four years after the British Raj has left, India invaded and annexed South Tibet. South Tibet includes Tawang, birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama and home to a four hundred years old Tibetan monastery. In 1987 India renamed South Tibet to the so called Arunachal Pradesh in an attempt to fool the world that it is part of India. Since 2009 South Tibet is officially recognized by the UN as a disputed territory.
      Today South Tibet is restless and the people there are seething with anger and India knows it. This is the reason AFSPA is imposed on South Tibet AFSPA (Armed Force Special Power Act) gives the state the power to detain or kill anyone with impunity. It is imposed on area India deemed disturbed, such as South Tibet and Kashmir. But South Tibet is hardly the only land grab India grabbed from its neighbors. Since its creation in 1947 India has invaded and annexed land from every single of its neighbors. Here is a selected list:

Unfortunately I cannot recall the name of French executive, and he was put in prison somewhere near New York, until the department of steam turbine was forced by US government to GE. How clever GE and US federal government are in setting up a false accusation case against a foreigner (as a high rank executive at Alston) and just to take advantage of intellectual property of French-designed high efficiency steam turbine from Alstom!

      She personally lied to the banks. There are many charges, the sanction charges are against Huawei, but she is charged with fraud and obstruction of justice I believe. When people personally break the law, they are charged. Sanction violations are done by the company as a whole, so it is the company that is charged. Its not because of who she is, but for what she did.

    Listening both sides of an argument makes one smarter, I believe. It clear to me China has been misunderstood and mistaken by the West, especially USA. Of course, China should take some responsibility for that. However, China has been around for thousands of years. Its history shows it is not an aggressive civilization. We believe in accommodating differences and seeking understanding, being modest and open-minded like a sea accepting all in-flowing waters no matter its origins. There is a lot about our core beliefs and philosophies that I wish to communicate to you. World peace and harmony is Chinese's main goal as written in major Chinese classic books.

    Lui Xin,
    I like professionalism, your deep understanding of the issues at hand and your expert talent of getting the most out of your interviwee. This time I was a bit disappointed. First it can be misleading to leave the analysis at the level of the West not understanding China. The West understands China well enough to know that it is the most serious threat to its colonial history that has lasted over the last three centuries. Second, the West has developed its ideological tools and indoctrinated world public opinion to believe its democratic fairy tale. Even if China started now to develop an alternative narrative (liberation ideology for example) it would take it several years to learn, master and sell its story to the rest of the world. China is the most serious threat to the western hegemony and the West will use every truth, lies, rumours and , yes, weapons. Historical cilivizational shifts used to be settled with swords or flint rifles. Now, we have cyber warfare and nuclear weapons. Good luck in managing the transition.

I can see it’s more than mere previous translation we need now to revise... it is also the adaptability n the skill of our ‘perception’ change that will propel a different comprehension, thus a new translational transmission, for the present main stream upgrading .... what do you think ? In any event, my original comment still stands in that the Chinese culture is historically more peaceful than the cultures where Abrahamic religions were predominant. Atheism actually fits in well with such a culture as atheists tend to be non-tribal and concerned for the well being of all people (Humanism) as opposed to only those within their own religious group, atheism not being a philosophy at all.

    China needs to think and act on its own path and interest. It doesn't need to serve or live up to any book title; if it must, it actually already has one called "Rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation". That theme is explicitly not: challenge and replace USA. $13 trillion GDP and 1.3 billion people need the all important Chinese devotion of stability and not placed in a chess game for one academic's amusement. It may be right that Germany was a rising power right before WWII and GB was a declining empire...but that didn't stop them both from all that destruction. Rising/declining is just a differential; the true integral is the actual lives of people living in the area between the lines.

    China does not want to be the biggest military and is not even in any competition against America. The US and other western political countries try and grow through imperialism which is eating every others cake to become bigger but China wants to grow by making the cake bigger and then there will be enough for everyone. China's way is unstoppable because it's own growth is actually growing other nation's economies as they share resources and investing in infrastructure. The US has no control over this and can't control it and is why they are trying to push China down but China will continue to grow and the US is powerless because they only understand economic growth through wars where China spends it's money on growth and not wars.

    As Empire USA is over $3 trillion in debt to China, as wealth is the only standard for power and glory, as government is nothing more than the organized morality of society, allowing the billionaires that rule USA and China to control the relationship between the two nations based only on the trade deficit, this has to be the height of pride.
    For wealth is the property we own above what is needed for a comfortable life. And in this respect, since the beginning of civilization the more intelligent upper-half of society has hoarded all of the land, wealth and political power. Which begs the question, is this the grand destiny of man, to be an intelligence dictatorship made extinct by global warming?

    Why China knows the West better as opposed to West knowing well of the Chinese ?
    1. China has history dated back to 5000 years, yet in most western schools there are hardly contents presented as educational kits for every Western students to know the rise and fall of Chinese empire, its humiliation and colonization by the West etc.....
    2. To understand China, westerners need to understand how and what they had done to the Chinese during the period prior to WWI. Without knowing the fine details leading to those historical settings, you will never understand what makes China revival over the last 40 years and expected to grow in next 100 years onward.

    trade deficit. US companies face bigger taxes, import duties, they have to establish joint ventures to operate in china and some industries are not allowed to enter. Moreover China is controls yuan exchange rate.
    US started to get afraid because they are losing their competetive edge. Rapid economic developmet facillitated scientific and technological advancements. China is catching up. They are not trying to completely prevent or contain Chinese economic development. Because It's impossible.
    I would rather say US after realizing that China is a real competitor who can not only produce but also innovate. All that they are trying to do right now is to provide more equal opportunities for their companies. So at least they have some sort of equality in the market.
    While China is also correct to defend their interests. We already know what can happen if you agree to the pressure. Japanese "Plaza accord" is a good example. While Japan experienced a "lost decade" China can experience something even more detrimental than that.

    Another great discussion. My observation is that there is not such a great difference in Civilization as it is made out tobe. I am refering to China, Japan, Korea, Europe including Russia, North and South America and Australia. The people living in these areas dress very much the same. They cut their hair very much the same. The food they eat might be prepared differently but basically is the same stuff. Noodles, pasta, patatoes, meat, fish, vegetables and fruit. All these people know the difference between hate and love. All they also know the difference between Hot War and Trade War.

West must make an effort to understand the other parts of the world better to eliminate the biased view and misunderstanding, likewise the Asians shall learn more about western culture and philosophy to understand the west better.

    One glaring aspect that is not raised in this interview but is certainly I think pertinent, the contrast between the much touted 'Christian' values of the West in contrast with the various religious/philosophical traditions that have shaped China over the last three and half to four thousand years. Most Westerners are aware that five hundred years BC, all the doctrines of Christianity except two were known to the Chinese; these exception are 1) there is no paradise to look forward to after death and 2) on the other hand neither is there a hell to burn 'sinners'. LOVE of one's neighbor with no strings attached in this life because this IS IT.

    Xi should hold a tv press conference remind the Chinese people that they are a 5000 yr old civilization that has survived everything they’ve had to overcome. Then the next morning abruptly halt ALL exports to the US.
    Then invite all western journalist to record his message to the US: when president trump and his administration is done playing trade games and is serious about today’s global economic, commerce cooperation, we will sit down and talk about opening up trade again, until then China will do what it needs to do for its own interest and continue to be an open partner to the rest of the world.
    If trump thinks he can take down Huawei or take down China,
    Then China should just flex its muscle, show it can take down apple, and other tech companies, Amazon, Walmart, vehicle parts, shipping and trucking, UPS, and all the ripples those industries would hurt. Unemployment would rise, bank loan defaults, Wall Street crash... then let’s see how popular trump’s ignorant ego really is

    The US attitude towards China has nothing to do understanding or not understanding China. It has everything to do it growing and stronger China. That the US see as a threat to its primacy, dominance and hegemony that it currently has over the world. It sees as the US's manifest destiny to rule the world and that its American Exceptionalism allow it to do as it please, even to the detriment of everyone else. So the animosity and toxic views of the US against China has no element of misunderstanding, but a toxic fear that China will overtake the US powers, primacy and authority.

    Liu Xin, I suggest a topic "Why do the Oversea Chinese fail to understand China?" It's not just the West. The fact is China is just like North Korea until recently. (e.g. My father was imprisoned for being an intellectual). You sound like you are from a privileged class that failed to understand the cruelty of the Cultural Revolution and the deceptions of the Communist Party. It'll take a lot for China to prove that she is no longer mean and deceptive like that, or has any tendency to regress. With a great deal of pain and bad memories, we pray for a better China. Yes, visiting China does help.
