  • Intersection and Resection are both ways to locate something unknown from one or more known places. Either calculating the grid location of an object in the distance or finding your own location, these techniques will prove essential during land navigation.

    Now do that in the darkness of night, under light fog, rolling forested terrain, while on patrol in a unfriendly area where you just broke contact with hostile elements and you’re trying to find the rally point but everyone’s turned around and still waiting for their ears to stop ringing from small arms fire. 🤙🏼

    this is the ONLY video (that I've seen, to date) using the 'game' that actually mentions declination and 'converting' magnetic bearings to the map's grid bearings. NICE JOB. I see ppl commenting on other videos about how they learned from other vidoes 'how to do resection', yet declination and 'back azimuth' aren't ever mentioned in them. Those that don't understand why declination is important, where I live, its 18°E, without compensating, in just 2km. I'd miss my target by 600m to the east.

      And this is precisely why I always check out the comments for videos. Invaluable information, very often. Thank you for highlighting that. VITAL information.

    • @MrRocque
      @MrRocque 3 года назад +2

      @@Rohith. doesn't matter where I live. Look at a magnetic declination map. there's all kinds of huge declination, some up to 40 degrees. The point of the comment was that some videos fail to mention declination when "instructing" others. When converting a compass reading to a map (and visa versa) MOST of the world HAS TO consider declination. This video considered that.

    Hi, really outstanding videos. I have just a quick question.
    -When you plotting a GRID coordinate, the North of the Protractor ALWAYS need to match the North of the Map? Correct.
    -I am confusing when I oriented my MAP with TERRAIN ASSOCIATION and the I want to PLOT A GRID coordinate with a Protractor. In this case, do I need to RE-ORIENT my MAP with the NORTH of my Protractor and North of the MAP? or just matching the terrain futures?
    Thank you.

    Isn't a protractor included in todays civilian baseplate compasses (the adjustable ring on the outside of the housing)? And doesn't make that calculation of a back azimuth obsolete?

    • @FlagFlyingHigh3
      @FlagFlyingHigh3 9 лет назад +3

      Evert Clowting I know you posted this 11 months ago but the adjustable ring on the outside of the compass is called the bezel ring( every click is 3 degrees. Its mostly used during night navigation so you don't have to use light to bead in a azimuth. A protracter is used for calculating azimuth on a map and pulling grids and a compass determines magnetic azimuth. To convert between the two you would use the declination diagram at the bottom of the map it varies depending on where you are at in the world. Either you add or subtract, it tells you how to convert. For back azimuth, ya you can look at the other side of the protractor or compass but to get it mathematically (the sure way) you simply add 180 degrees if your azimuth is less than 180 and subtract 180 if its greater than 180. For mils you would use 3200 mils and use the same equation.

      16.1 degrees is the the declination angle. It's the angle between grid north and magnetic north. The earths magnetic pole is constantly moving and so theres a difference between it and the Earths geographic north pole.
