Dave, thank you for this awesome video, i really enjoy the way you and Shawn Kelly teach people on how to use the compass, you make it easy to follow and a enjoyable learning experience. thank you again, take care, stay healthy and God bless you and your Family always.
Excellent stuff, thank you. When I was learning offshore navigation in the early 80s, well before the days of GPS, triangulating a position from backbearings was a fundamental. The instructor at the time always made one point: beware of confirmation bias in plotting your bearings. In other words it's very tempting to tweak a bearing to be where you think it *should* be - eg to intersect nicely with previous bearings, even if it might appear to contradict them - and they might be wrong.
Dude, this is great material. This is exactly what I want to become proficient at. You're a great teacher and I hope to see more master classes like this in the future. Incredible work. Thank you dave
Catching up on your videos. It's cool to see you cross over into the hiker gear and modify your camper Jeep. I'd be curious to see videos on how you would outfit an Enduro motorcycle or touring mountain bike. Stay bushy 🐰
Very satisfying stuff. I find myself getting back into manual navigation with a compass now that Im doing a lot more backcountry public land hunting. Even with modern GPS tools, a compass proves itself useful on pretty much all of my outings.
Great video, it points out how important the MAP part is of map-and-compass. Can you imagine having a compass, but absolutely no idea of the terrain around you? How did ancient man navigate? Terrain association is great if the terrain cooperates. Spent 4 years eating sand in Ft. Bliss, NTC, 29 Palms a million years ago, the elevation lines were inches apart LOL.
Thank you! That was a very informative video of knowing where you are and where you need to be so that you don’t get lost! I will have to practice this skill this year so thank you again!
Well taught! Thanks Dave my battle and I were just talking about land navigation course in the army never understood it completely. Well got it now. Of course I'm a little wiser now.
Fantástico!!!!!..... Sabes como se pueden activar los subtítulos en otros idiomas ( en mi caso Español)... Algunos videos no hace falta, visualmente son muy instructivos, pero otro como este se haría más fácil..... Gracias
Unfortunately, the USGS topographical maps produced as of 2020 no longer show structures along with other kinds of man made objects other than roads, pipe and powerlines, railroads, and a few others. Older, well out of date USGS topo maps still show that stuff, ( map declination will be way off) so don't toss out your old maps, if you want to do this stuff, using a USGS topo map. I don't know what other map makers do, maybe they are better. ;-)
Hi Dave, when you keep your protractor square, what part of protractor is square with what part of map, is it grid or true or magnetic north? As always, thanks for your knowledge!
More of these types of videos, please. Your map knowledge is AWESOME!
YES, PLEASE!!!! More of this!
Yep... Love this. Just started being able to walk again and this kind of stuff would keep me interested in doing longer walls
Agreed!

Really appreciate your work sir. Thank you for your videos and endless knowledge. Cheers
Love it when a plan comes together. Technology verifies the validity of old-school.

@David Canterbury I absolutely enjoy your content, down to earth and common sense based, but you really need to get a wireless mic setup. Thnx again.

Hey David you ever seen a UFO out there or any strange objects while camping or any strange wild life out there Sir. Good video
Dave - what setting do you use on a GPS to get the grids like you show?
can you explain if or how you included the magnetic declination?
Dave, off topic a bit. But what is the pack you have in this video?
Dave points towards the camera and says “Let’s take a look at this knob over here”. Should I be offended?😮
Dave can you talk about your philosophy about the universe?
