I’m in Ireland and lucky as the vast majority of our beef is grass fed and finished, when I started watching American homesteading videos, I had to ask my husband who is a beef farmer what Americans meant by grass fed!! As I didn’t realize people ate any other kind! Becky you are great, love your videos. 🥰🥰
My sister visited Ireland and she commented about how great the farming standards are over there. I'm so jealous of all your quality dairy 🤤
I just watched this again - the price increase in 2 - 3 years is so sad! But this is still the best way to go. THANKS AGAIN!
Write out digram and put in a sheet protector, tape to front of freezer- I also used stackable crates. I do now have a stand up freezer and still use crates
Yes this is our second year buying local beef from a farm we love it and wont go back of can help it and have done a hog too . i love supporting local farms
You are the most influential person I’ve “met” this year. I LOVE your channel and have learned so much!
This is such a great video. Thanks so much for sharing this information!!
Hi Becky loving watching all your older vids ,really enjoying them ,totally addicted to yout Chanel
Thank you so much for doing this video. I am going to get a half a beef in a couple weeks and needed this information so bad
Thank you so much for this incredible video. SO interesting. I will be going to find a local butcher to buy for my first time half a cow.
It’s very GOOD meat! We’ve have enjoyed some over the holidays!
Omg!! I just ordered my first half beef and whole pork. IM SO EXCITED!!! NOw that i found you i plan to cook and Prep my meals in advance too. I love cooking and baking so it'll be fun. The hubby and I both work fulltime and have 4 kids (2 human and 2 fur) so it'll help with meals for the week days.
💙 freezer tours!
this is very helpful! im getting ready to buy a quarter cow, found some ranchers in AZ. thanks for showing! i will have to buy another deep freezer. my freezer is currently full. the ranchers i found nearby all process meat before handing it over. grass fed in AZ is about $8+ dollars #
This was great info
Very timely video. I'm thinking of buying a 1/2 cow. Very helpful info! thanks
You should! You won’t ever go back! It’s an expensive up front cost but in the end it’s cheaper for way better quality and you get to decide exactly how you want it butchered.
That's it! I have a farm up the street that sells half and whole hogs. I use a half hog because I live alone.
thank you for all the information. My husband and I are thinking of doing this, but I think we will do a pig plus a 1/4 beef.
That sounds great. Start small and get more next time if you want more.
Thanks for sharing 7-13-2021
Someone below asked how long the half a cow will last you but I do see a reply. This is something I’m really interested in knowing.
Thank you Becky, so interesting and helpful!
I just found your channel, I was surprised to see Basket Flat Ranch mentioned. I bought a half beef from them in fall of 2020 and did not like it at all. They have amazing reviews and I seem to be the only one who had that opinion. Some tried to say I didn't realize grass fed/finished would taste different from CAFO beef, but I have been strictly eating grass fed/finished since 2017. I think the issue was that the butcher didn't dry age it long enough for my taste (less than one week). But aside from that, what a small world! Glad I found your channel!
I was JUST looking at buying from them! This is what I'm worried about. I spoke to the rancher and he doesn't have any tasting samples available. Did it taste gamey? Did you use Wards or Butcher Boys?
Very useful info. Great job explaining 👏
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
You bet!
Can you do another video breaking down the purchase of the pig too?
I just watched your half side beef information. Question: can you also get the tanned hide? If so how much would that cost?
Do you have a video showing how you use your soup bones ?
I'm curious if you've subtracted out the weight of the bones and fat from the overall weight of the prepared meat cuts to figure your true cost per pound of meat you consume? From the video it looked like perhaps your volume of fat and bones in those bags was 1/3 or 1/4 of your total weight? From your description I'm gathering you're also paying about 4.80/lb for the fat and the bones as well too, which I assume you also think is a decent value since you're using it, but for someone who's not likely to render the fat or make use of all the bones does it mean that it's essentially doubling the cost of the consumable meat? (hope that question makes sense?)
Hello! :-) Just a suggestion....Since you are naming the company that you buy your beef from, you should ask for a discount code. That would benefit their future customers and hopefully you as well. Have a great day! :-)
Do you pickup 1/2 a cow and put it in your car and you take it to the butcher or does the rancher take the cow to the butcher and you pickup packaged meat from the butcher?
You pick it up from the butcher
Do you get part of your beef made into patties? Our friends raise grass only cows and the meat is a little more dry. Than our cows that get feed and grass.
Wow what a lot it costs
That’s a lot of meat! Do you hackathon large family?
Video request: a trip to the butcher to see how the side is cut up. Would be awesome.
I will definitely show that next time!
I made you another dozen fire starters for your stove!
Yay! Thanks
I made some today!!! They will be Christmas presents!! (I even made some for myself!) Thank you for the tutorial!
Can I ask where you went for your cow? And what it cost you? I live in the same area as you and we are talking of doing a half or quarter cow and pig. I found a place in Marion County that does cow, pig and chickens. But wow like to see about other places.
I live in the same area as well. Kookoolan farms in Yamhill is a great place for steer. They’ve recently added hogs this year too.
👍👍👍👍
Its so good
Thanks for sharing. We were thinking of doing the same thing. This past year was the first time raising our own pigs. The flavor compared to store bought was a night and day difference. How was the meat you got? Big difference?
It’s sooo good. It has so much more flavor then store bought. It’s so worth it. We won’t ever go back.
@@AcreHomestead Awesome! thanks so much for sharing! Hope you have an awesome 2021 season!
We raise our own hogs and cattle. Not only grass but it is so much better than what you get at the store.
How long do half a cow last you?
My family doesn't eat too much beef. I'm wondering if I could buy 1/4 a cow? I love the idea if buying local beef straight from the source.
I’m from the Midwest, when I was younger my family would purchase a full cow, however we didn’t need that much, so my parents often went in with 3 other families and distributed the meat equally. So if you can gather a few families it makes everything so cost effective and doesn’t waste any of the cow. We asked to keep everything bones, hide ect, as 1 of the families would use the hide, bones are great for bone broth or we’d give them to the dogs as a treat.
@@andythorn2353 Thats actually a great idea. I was also wondering if they'd give you the hide as well! Thanks for the reply.
My rancher lets you buy a 1/4 of a cow! I did that for many years before upping it to a half. Its a 1/4 of a half so you don't end up with the front end or back end. you end up with a 1/4 of the front end and 1/4 of the back end if that makes sense...
@@AcreHomestead some ranchers do this and some don’t, so I’d ask to make sure, often times they say yes if they can get other people to buy the remaining cow, otherwise it’s a slaughter that’s not cost effective for them (assuming they themselves have enough meat in their freezer)… there’s no hurt in asking… we just took out the need for the rancher to find other people to sell to… as you said you can get it cut however you like, the rancher will divvy it up however you ask. In my experience they will give you the hide IF you request it! So if you do want it you need to ask before butchering!
Is it possible to make bone broth with the bones?
Yes
Filet mignon is sliced tenderloin...
That must be it! They still haven't bloomed!
Where do you guys live?? And you are 1 busy lady..
SW Washington
I am having a real problem with the sound on some of your videos, I can barely hear them. I really wanted to watch them! I thought maybe it was a one off at first, it's not as I have found more. I even use an external speaker, it doesn't help much. I don't know what you could do, but if you could help please!!!
I'm not sure how to help.... I film them all on an old Iphone. I am planning on buying a camera and speakers to pick up my voice now that more people are here. I'm so sorry... :(
@@AcreHomestead maybe just get a pin on microphone…the quality of your videos are excellent x
The audio is good over here.
expensive meat per lb. how does the taste compare to store-bought beef?
I should have added this in the video but I thought about after. It's actually a pretty good price for organic 100% grass fed beef. It's 5.55 at Costco for organic beef not even grass fed and the only ground beef. I get all the cuts for less then that including rib eye, filet, skirt steak, ect. You are right you can get much cheaper meat but it's less quality and you can't get rib eye for that price.
Yes, it’s an excellent price!
