i dont think ive said this to someone on youtube but you actually have great content and videos. no ego involved, pure knowledge. thanks dude. good stuff. definitely appreciate it
Hi Beat, thanks I really appreciate it. Yeah, I mean, I created this community to share knowledge and talk about topics I ”burn for” and think interests other people. When I do reviews I always try to do constructive feedback. There is enough negative vibe out there. Glad to have you onboard the channel. Feel free to join in on the Discord channel too so you get heads up when we do live streams etc. Again, appreciate the kind feedback. You made this day even brighter (its misty and gloomy here in northern sweden today...haha) but its getting brighter. Thanks! 😉
@@MattiasHolmgren No Problem. Thanks again from Vancouver Canada
Beat Wilson...couldn’t agree more mate. Alex Vaan is great too. He’s a Bitwigging Canadian.
Mattias Holmgren...Why do people generally prefer sunshine and blue skies? I think one o my parents must have been a polar bear or a penguin. I love the cold and grey of winter. It’s gets too cold you can out a jacket on. It gets too hot...you’re ruined. Can’t take your skin off. Technically you probably can. I’m getting weirder aren’t I. Great video again mate.
Yeah there are many awesome creators out there!
Thank you so much, I am a first year sound design student in Brussels and for my solo project I am making a dreamlike soundscape this information really helps me out
Hi, glad to be of inspiration to your projects! I have a ton of videos on granular sound design. It's my favourite method of sound creation. Thanks! 🎁😀
Christoph Waltz talking about plugins
Oh yes, Mr.Waltz is my elder brother. ;)
As someone that loves granular synthesis, I appreciate your video. It's a topic not a lot of music channels have covered. Thank you!
Hi Scarlet, yeah I'm also a big fan of the sounds you get with granular synthesis. It's so easy to get interesting textures and create complex sounds. The Mangle is still a favourite plugin, since it's so visual showing how the grains behave on the waveform time-line. Thanks a million for writing and supporting my channel Scarlet!
Yes, finally! Someone explains sample-based synths by actually playing his own sample in! Exactly what I want to do, thanks so much for this great vid! Subscribed!
Glad it was helpful Ed! Thanks for the kind feedback. I'm gonna do an updated Top Granular VST plugins video soon! It's on my todo list since this was such an appreciated video.
@@MattiasHolmgren I very much look fwd to it. Have a great Xmas and watch you soon!
I'm getting amazing results from grano, a Realtor ensemble. Im so happy I've finnaly found that cinematic sound at last! :D
Superb, glad you found your favourite device for granular synthesis. I tend to use different granular tools for various results. Form, Omnisphere, Kontakt, Digitakt, Bitwig sampler, Logic Pro X Alchemy etc. Its a fun way of finding interesting cinematic sounds.
I'm just diving into granular synthesis and absolutely fell in love with the Tasty Chips GR-1 recently. Alas, it's a bit pricey... Therefore The Mangle is a great tip, I will get this immediately!
Awesome, yeah granular synthesis is really fun to explore. ☀️🍿🥁

3:00 - 3:20 - you've entered the forest of doom and despair
Hi Jan, spot on description of the musical emotions in the granular sound spheres. ;)
The mangle looks like just what I needed. Thanks for this video, amazing quality and cool guy!
Thanks, The Mangle is a cool plug for granular. Visual appealing too! 😃
I only just discovered your channel but I'm learning so much. Thank you man.
Hi Shady, happy to hear you find my videos inspiring. Welcome onboard!
I ended up here because I was curious about how they made the scary motorbike-like sound in Hannibal and Blade runner 2049. I know very little about making music but you explain granularity really well.
Hi Odile, wow that's quite the road to find my granular synthesis video. I really like the soundtrack of Blade Runner. Especially the original. Glad you like my explanation on granular synthesis. It's a simple concept but can yield very interesting sounds. Hope to see you around! Thanks for watching!
The one that I think would have blown everyone away is Crusher-X. Older plugin, but a real powerhouse.
Cool, thanks for mentioning another great granular plug. We all have different tools that work with us. I’m currently testing Straylight for Kontakt. Update on that one coming later. Thanks for writing!
Been using alchemy in logic for the past year for this and damn! Wish I would have seen this video sooner! Lol thank you!!
Hi Connor! Alchemy is also totally fine for granular sounds, I really like it. But I find Omnisphere, The Mangle, Form and Bitwig Sampler does the job extremely well. They all sound different obviously but that just adds to your sound palette. Good to hear you appreciate the video and breakdown. Thanks for writing Connor!
Appreciate your knowledge and demonstration technique...thank you.
Glad my content in synthesis is helpful! Thanks for writing Marc!
Thank you for such a quick and nicely explained video of this complex subject. Subscribed.
Thanks Manish! Looking forward to see you around in the comments! Cheers, Mattias
Good summary of these plugins. I hope you will cover other granular tools, such as Steinberg Padshop Pro, Dust, SpaceCraft, GRM Grainspace, and UVI FALCON (which has IRCAM Granular synthesis as part of the built-in sound engines)
Hi Yuri, thanks for writing. I did cover UVI Falcon, but maybe not so much the granular features, as the plugin as a whole. I’ll try to cover these other awesome tools soon too. Thanks for the suggestion.
After getting Omnisphere 2 I really want that granulator on my Novation Peak . Unfiltered Audio Triad granulator get's the closest out of my plugins.
Yeah granular synthesis is so much fun to explore. Never fiddled with the Novation Peak though. But I did try a vast amount of granular VSTi plugins. Gonna do a sequal to this granular synthesis episode! Thanks for writing!
Of all the ones I've heard, Omnisphere has the best clarity imo.
Hi, yes Omnisphere does sound good. I think they all have their ”sound” and it’s fun to have some variation. Also layering some of these plugins can be very effective.

Just what I was looking for thanks Mattias
Hi Leafygreens, happy to hear you enjoy this granular grainization video. ;)
Of the workstation-style synths, Halion 6 and Falcon are generally considered to have superior granular engines. Both have fairly complex interfaces and neither has audio rate inter-oscillator modulation though. Padshop Pro has an engine that is similar to Halion 6. The modular nature of the Phase Plant interface is perhaps a more immediate approach. Have you ever tried Crusher X? There is some chatter about it on KVR. It is pricey and complicated but seems to be the ultimate granular processing environment.
Hi Thomas. I did not try Crusher-X. Although I believe great granular sounds is possible in most of the synths / samplers. They all sound slightly different and have slightly more/less complex extra features. But granular synthesis is a fairly simple synthesis form. Chop a wavefile into small pieces and trigger a flora of each piece to play with an envelope and at various speeds and move the start offset to various places. Its super fun and we can find wonderful sounds within sounds. The ones Ive tried so far that I like to use most is (in order) Omnisphere 2, Form, Mangle, Bitwig sampler. The reason Omnisphere is first is because the great bundled sound content. You can of course load your own samples. But man, the included sounds are still the best in any sampler / synth to date IMO. Omnisphere is also very easy to edit. I did try Halion in the past when it was young. But maybe you know I abandoned Cubase for Logic. Hope to do an updated Top Granular plugins in the coming weeks. Ill take Crusher-X for a spin. 🥳🎅🌞
Good info, thx for the vid!
If you have never tried Granite, I highly recommend it, fabulous graular synth👍🏼
Hi, yeah Granite looks a tad similar to The Mangle. I’ll give it a look. They are all slightly different and give unique results. I really enjoy that Bitwig’s native sampler includes a granular mode. Thanks for watching and writing!
I rarely comment on videos but when i saw the bawu i thought you were super cool and then i saw the programs you had installed and holyfuck you are the coolest person ever lol
Awww, super happy to have you onboard Nunnuka.🙏 I love that Bawu instrument, magical tone and vibe. Super fun to play. Meditation! So what programs got you hyped in my toolbar? 🔬 Blender? Minecraft? Hehe 😄, yeah I'm an avid gamer, but mostly on console (PS4 / PS5) these days since I don't run pc's anymore. My son got those to play with instead! The Macs aren't as game friendly.
@@MattiasHolmgren oh wow i got a reply :D, i love that. I got hyped up because our toolbars looked so similar, blender, unity, krita, bunch of daws, visual studio, i think i also saw some affinity stuff, and yes definitely minecraft as well :D

So tranquil, atmospheric (I'd also say 'textured' :)) video, thanks to the main topic :) Thank you so much for this, Mattias! I enjoyed watching it.
Granular synth is a little stranger for me for some reason, but in your hands it sounds very beautiful and promises to give that depth and atmosphere one can't sometimes find for the track. Especially yes, for pads, winds and custom pluck things.
Following your suggestions from previous videos I also keep trying to adopt this, still without particular success, yet. But I'll continue :)
Thanks again for observing these plugins and describing the details of this type of synthesis, Mattias! And also for opening and pointing out to this another area for me personally :) I wish you a nice weekend, productive and good days! It's still spring, there's still a lot of inspiration and freshness in the air! :) We had the 'last bell' day today, sort of holiday of finishing school, so there are many happy (but a little sad in the same time) children in the street, which really marks the very late spring for me and somehow inspires as well) So yes, have a nice Friday and the weekend, Mattias!
Hi Alexey, thanks for inspiring you into the granular synthesis world. There are amazing sounds to be found in this area. And you often find interesting textures very swiftly compared to other synthesis methods. Just swap out your source material and adjust that speed, position, rate and sustain slightly.
We are having heavy rain the whole day which can give me headache sometimes. =)
Hope tomorrow will bring the sun back.
Happy to hear you get inspiration this week from the atmosphere around at your place! Sounds lovely!
Oh yes, everyone is wrapping up their school soon. My kids included. I'm glad for their sake to have a long warm summer free from work.
Thanks for the kind feedback. Hope you also get a wonderful weekend Alexey! Talk soon!
@@MattiasHolmgren Thank you very much, Mattias! There's indeed feels much power in this type of synthesis, so yes, definitely won't give it up anymore in further sound searches)
Oh, so pity for the rainy weather in your place :( We had so sunny spring overall, it literally never was so warm and sunny here before (global warming, probably), but now the forecast promises rains all day long, so I hope, it should make it become sunny and warm in your place :) After all, we quite often have weather changes from Scandinavia, so I think, now it must be just moved here to free some space for sun and warmth on your side)
Completely join you and so happy for your kids for those big summer holidays approaching! There are always so much expectations from it every time, as I remember :) I hope, you'll have a lot of nice time together, and the holidays will be pleasant and unforgettable)
Me: Nobody plays keyboard with a pen in his hand
Mattias : Hold my pen.
mmm wait I fucked it up....
Haha, well, I guess I am too eager to showcase melodies and sounds that I forget to put the pen aside every time. Less thinking, more playing. 😋🎂🌞🦊 I fup all the time. ⭐
This is a great video Mattias!
Thanx bamboo. 🎁 It's one of my best videos! ;) More granular synth videos coming soon!!! 🔥😋
Man, Form sounds sublime.
Hi Jooo, yeah NI Form is smooth! Very nice to stop the time and slow down a sound infinitely. ;) A bit more fiddly with multiple screens but very powerful.
That’s what I like about Form. The sound quality is amazing. I doubt we’ll ever see updates, but that’s ok. The sound quality sets it apart from the others. I do like the granular implementation of Omnisphere 2, so been using that quite a bit lately.
I wish they sold it as standalone vst.
Yeah Omnisphere 2 granular playback is awesome, especially after the updates.
Which one? Form is sold separately, €99 I think. Omnisphere 2 is great as a whole. 😀
Thank you very much for learning's all those great vst !!!! ;)
My pleasure! Happy to share a few nice plugin tips and tricks! 🎉🌞
2:34 I love this sound :)
Awesome Wedi, granular vst plugins rocks! Thanks for writing.
Hey just catching up on this now! Is there any updated ones that you would recommend? Looking into slate and ash cycles & output portals! I have no idea if landforms is granular synthesis but this video was super useful!!
(really love straylight, pigments not as in-depth as abletons but the UI is quick!!)!!
Landforms isn't a granular engine but has granular FX but has other features you find nowhere else.....great Kontakt instruments
My favorite granular plugin is definitely Steinberg padshop
I am glad to hear you found a granular synthesis plug that resonate with your ideas! Thanks for writing Diego!
@@MattiasHolmgren thanks for being so active good night well good night for me probably good morning for you lol either way have a lovely day :)

Awesome Loic! Glad you enjoyed the video. A granular synthesis sequal is coming in a few weeks! 🌞
Thank you, quite informative!
Glad it was helpful Pablo!
Thanks!!! Watching. Granular synth is my favorite synth. For me, Skylab and Padshop Pro from Steinberg are the best.
Hi Gabriel, thanks. Hope you like this video! Yeah, there are many great plugins for granular. These are my favourites at the moment. ;)
Gabriel Macedo
Can U import samples in Skylab or in Padshop?
Yes, you can in Padshop Pro and Skylab
Gabriel Macedo
Ok. Thanx. itz only 4 da Pro Version
audio damage quanta and the new one by output are both real nice. check those.
Hi, yeah there are many great products. I’ll try to cover them too soon. Cheers
Great video! Got some Wendy Carlos vibes at the end
Oh yeah? Awesome, thank you! 🌞😋
I really like Form, because of the automatic pitch map detection.
But I wish they would update it to provide an option to allow it to play the sound as a sampler,
yet using the pitch map for automatic root pitch and Kontakt's Time Machine algorithm for timestretch/pitch-shift.
Some sounds do not work well in Form, b/c of the synthesis it uses.
This also brings to mind the issue that most developers and videos do not address the issue of pitch when it comes to granular synthesis.
It's always about drop in, adjust and play. I guess it's because either folks do not care about correct pitch, of is it that these tools are only to be used for samples set to C3.
Hi, personally I often tend to use granular synthesis as pads and drones, thus errors / failure in pitch is not of importance. Granular by design is a destructive process. I want gritty sounds with character from it so I rarely care for perfection. We use other timestretching algos for perfection. Kontakt has nice algos. Really love that sampler. Cheer, Matt Thanks for writing and your point of view!
I use Form in almost every song I create. I also use other granular synths in layers. The way I use them is for blanket backgrounds. Sometimes I'll chop them up and put quite a bit of automation on them. I'll use wavetable synths and some highly processed old-school keys for all the melodic stuff where I care about precise notes (but I don't always care about being precise) ;)
Hi Joe, quite in line with my philosophy that slight imperfection is key to organic sound. ;) Someone said Form dev has stopped. Well maybe it’s finished. ;) It haven’t crashed on me in any of the usecases. Though I don’t use it as much as I use Omnisphere 2 for granular backdrops. It’s fun it has so many useareas and it’s quick to get interesting / awesome sounds going. Thanks for writing Joe!
i can't believe you didn't mention Granulator by Monolake. i've tried tons of different granulators and this one is always top of my list.
Yeah there are many good plugins for granularity. This is my selection of tools. Maybe an upcoming video on the Granulator. 😉 Granular synthesis is very intriguing and fun! Thanks for writing Simeon. Happy to hear about your choice.
thank you for making such a well produced video, mattias. it's very cool to hear how different each granulator sounds with the same sample!
Thanks, I think it’s a good way to hear a bit how they all differ and work. Cheers!
I can tell that this man is very smart because he held a pen while playing his midi keyboard.
Oh yeah? At least I can quickly show what I am talking about without needing to drop the tools all the time. Thanks.
Hey Matthias, how do these compare to the Fruity Granulizer? Is there a huge difference in what the can do? Great video too by the way 👍
They offer a broader range of settings, as well as internal effects and a few different takes on grain playback. Just look at Form for example. I really like the visual aspect of The Mangle. And Omnisphere always sounds nice. Granulizer works splendidly and is in par with the others as long as you make use of effects on top. Like fruity delay 3 etc. Love it! Thanks glad u like my grain plugin video. Its a success! Ill do a sequal episode soon. 😀🌞
Mattias Holmgren That would be fantastic, you’ve really sparked my interest in granular synthesis. Thanks again for all your work
great vid man
Thanks my friend. Glad you enjoy my video on granular synthesis.
The mangle is an extraordinary vst
Hi DK. Yeah I really think The Mangle is a nice feature-filled granular plugin. There are many favourites for this synthesis method.
Mattias Holmgren can you suggest the top 5 soundscape and granular vsts in the market now?
@@user-id4sx9oi7l hey, I'll try to give an updated video on granular / soundscape plugins later this year. Many topics to cover now! Phew! But I do love these kind of sound tools so it's on the list! What's your own favourite grain/scape list DK? Thanks!
thanks a lot
( 1:50 ) Melody reminded me of start of Baba O'Riley.
Oh cool. I was just improvising as usual. 😉
Portal is also awesome.
Yeah, plenty of awesome plugins for granular synthesis. Straylight now also supports importing samples, but my favourite is probably Form because it's so accessible with features. 😋
Time to update the video and review the Grain from Reason Studios. Can be used as a VST plugin in any DAW with Reason 11.
Yeah I am planning on another granular edition video. 😋
Did he release these songs anywhere to stream??
Hi, no I did not release these small jams yet. But I have a large bunch of albums and EPs on Spotify etc if you search for Mattias Holmgren…or Gelhein. My last EP is Gelhein - Cambodia. 🥁🍿☕️🥳
Hey Mattias, how about Fragments? or Portal? do you use them?
Hi Marco, no I don’t use those although they are also great options. I intend on doing an updated video since its been a while. 😄🎉🥁🍿
@@MattiasHolmgren cool! these are very cool granular plugins because they work not with just a sample, but a constant buffer in realtime... so I use them and transform any sound. I have Fragments but I am thinking seiously into Portal too although, not totally convinced yet because of their similarities ...and I already have the one that seems to have a faster workflow Fragments. Portal I fear it will consume much time from me, like my analog gear, which I absolutely love... but then, time is a very finite resource... Looking forward Mattias 👍 👍 👍 (bell always on! 🤓)
Can these be used as FX on top of Omnisphere or Kontakt instruments?
Hi Anthony, no. Form, Omnisphere 2, The mangle are granular vst instruments. So they basically load up samples and use that content for the granular engine. If you want to use a plugin as an effect to transform incoming audio you need to look for granular "effect plugins". Delta Sound Labs stream is a granular plugin that can capture and record incoming audio and granulize it. Maybe check that one out. I will be making an update granular synthesis video for 2021 soon.
I am currently using an external hardware effect from Hologram Electronics called Microcosm which is super awesome for various granular delay effects!
Thanks for writing! Hope the info helps!
the part Im not getting is, will it always be in key? if you scroll through the wave form dont you pick up very different frequencies, its probably a stupid question lol Or can you only use samples that play all notes in C?
Hi Aaron, thanks for asking. Yes, depending on your material if you scroll / scan too long in a sample the pitch might change. Its part of the beauty and discovery of granular synthesis though. 😉 With granular you often tend to scan very slowly and not far...you only listen (work with) only a fraction of a sound file. But if you’ve seen how I work with granular I sometimes do more drastic scanning, it’s part of the beauty to have small fragments of uglyness. But I seldom do granular with samples that fly all over the place in pitch. You want some kind of control.
The samples can be any key, you repitch / tune them in the sampler to fit your song anyways. No question is stupid. We all have small details to learn. Thanks for asking Aaron! Cheers!
@@MattiasHolmgren Thank you for the detailed answer, Mattias.
1:52 sounds a lot like the intro of If You're Too Shy by The 1975
cool never knew ;)
Hi Mattias! What's wrong with Pad shop from Steinberg? I don't know if it's ready for Macs though.
There's probably nothing wrong with Pad Shop. There are several great granular plugins. And they basically all work the same with slightly different controls. It's the same type of principle of playing back small grains of audio in various ways. I just recommend the stuff I use personally , I'm not using Cubase anymore since a few years back so Pad Shop is not on my list. ;) Thanks for writing!
@@MattiasHolmgren Thanks for mentioning! I've used FL Studio's granulizer for years (actually when they were just Fruity Loops) and after I've seen Pad Shop that was a little revelation for me. Yeah, probably I've just didn't noticed other good granular based VSTs around before the moment :)
@@KiR_3d try the Form. I think it's a nice take on granular synthesis, it also boasts some sweet effects. Bitwigs internal granular engine is also very nice, and accessible. In combination with the complete set of modular devices in Bitwig it's an insane combination! ;)
Do you recommend any free Granular synthesis plugins heheh?
Sure, Granulizer if you are in FL Studio. 😉 Ill make a video on free alternatives soon.
@@MattiasHolmgren will check it out, thank you!
3:17 how are you playing different octaves? not all octaves work when i play the sample :(
Sorry for late reply. In Mangle you can select how many octaves one sound should occupy. That is because they built the synth so you can have keyboard splits (ie. one granular sample at the bottom octaves, and another sample on the top octaves. You can change how many keys / octaves one sample should occupy. Thanks!
Dude excuse me but I don't get it. What are you doing with the keyboard if you have the bawu sample as the input to the plugin ?
The Bawu sample is dropped into the Mangle Granular synthesizer. I create a droning sound out of that within The Mangle. Using the keyboard I can play any melody or chord I want from that one sample. Granular plugins are great for ethereal and ambient sounds. Download a demo of The Mangle or Form and try it out!
@@MattiasHolmgren Thank you very much for your reply. Now it makes a sense :)
It has to be said that Mangle dev has disappeared. No development going on there.
Hi Reed, maybe they decided Form is a finished product after all. Or does it crash for you? It never crashed on my in any of the usecases yet. Form can really push out both smooth and more FM like material from samples which is neat. But I do think it’s a bit more fiddly than the other options. I like ”one screen” solutions. Thanks for writing Reed.
Yeah I bought it years ago and there hasn’t been any activity since. It seems a bit like abandonware.
@@MattiasHolmgren He doesn't reply to emails, and I was never sent the update to 1.0 (or 1.1), so I'm stuck on the beta unless I pirate the software that I purchased... I'd say that counts as more than just 'no development', it's dead. He's still selling it though, which all reminds me a lot of the EnergyXT story...
Is mangle compatible with Catalina?
I have a question about The Mangle. When I put loops in the Mangle I get this clicking sound at the end of every grain i play I was wondering if there was a way to remove or reduce this clicking sound. It's a sound similar to when you sample something and the end sort of clicks before looping again. Let me know if I explained it well enough.
Hey man, I got a nice Granulator 2 tip for you.....I call it " Continuous granulation " ....basically I've found a way to feed a constant stream of audio into Granulator 2 .....check it out man ......it sounds awesome 👌
great! ;)
Hey big bro have you opened Ableton?
Oh yes I have, many times. But I don’t want to jump into AL just because they updated their plugin suite.
The interface is much more sleek and lean in Bitwig. ;) There are millions of great granular solutions. But I find these are the best for my work and Mangle, Form and Omnisphere can be used in any DAW. So I think these are great tips for anyone who want to explore granular synthesis. Thanks for writing.
Mattias Holmgren you are definitely speaking facts.
@@MattiasHolmgren You think Ableton is Sleek? I think it looks terrible compared to Bitwig actually. I'd actually say the opposite is true.
Ricky Pann you have to read again. I never wrote nor talked about AL interface as sleek. Thanks for writing and hope you like the videos.
when you watch this in 2023 and the mangle doesnt exist anymore
😂
The Mangle is no longer available "sound guru is no more" (says the website)
Yeah unfortunately such things happen.
Ill make a new updated video soon.
Hi! Does The mangle works on Mac os Catalina? Can’t find it :(
The Mangle runs smoothly on Mojave. I didn't try it in Catalina yet. I always wait some year before upgrading my main music comp to new OS.
I downloaded it today; runs now in Demo mode on Catalina, so I think it should work fine.
I don’t get it, can you play this on top of live recording into logic x? Or does it just work with samples within it, i want to play a choir with dropped octaves with a granular sound cause my 36 year old Roland died so I have gone to a usb midi keyboard using logic ect sample but it does not sound right??!
Computer samples don’t have the same harmonics or texture to the old stuff and I would rather set all the effect/ plugins prior to recording because then you hear something that sounds right instead or recording within a range then like polishing shit, try to make it sound right later but it never sounds as good as just hearing the right sound and feeling it before recording. The end result is alway favourable to what magically feels right which your ears don’t often pickup till you’ve had a break and come back, or your first impression before your ears and brain get used to the sound [my opinion] it’s so much easier with analog for me but I have to make my workflow up to modern tools
bitwig! that's best daw ever.
Hi, yes Bitwig is a wonderful DAW to work in. Clean and smooth with epic modulation. ;) Thanks for writing.
Adorei
Gracias, thanks. 🌞
when want to do same modulation like Brian Eno
Oh yes, make granular like Brian Eno. Thanks for writing! 😊
I see a lot of people talking about granular synthesis but why is it so interesting ? it doesnt sound so good imo T_T
Granular (synthesis) is just a way to interactively play with audio source material and create new sound scapes. I think it can definitely yield interesting sounds. Not every patch / sound experiment will sound good. And taste is like.... ;)
The developer, Tom Maisey, does not respond to emails. Just zero support. I paid for the Mangle at the Beta stage, now i can't get it to work. Sound Guru my arse...
Mangle is probably discontinued deluxe today, solo indie dev gone underground. Did you try Form?
@@MattiasHolmgren It's not discontinued sound-guru.com/software/mangle/

Hi Mattias.. Bitwig bitwig bitwig :D
Hi FloBetz, the Bitwig Sampler is in there among the granular synths. =) Yeah I know you want more Bitwig videos but there are many topics I want to cover! ;) More is coming! Winter is coming!
Hi Matt, nice one !
- The Mangle is kinda bit complicated to use for me, it is not very intuitive, but has a great granular synthesis for sure.
- Bitwig Sampler is just awesome...we did not need to talk about ^^,
- Form i never try, looks and sounds nice here, it native instruments...good products all the way
- Omnisphere i never try, too expensive actually
if u wanna stay a little bit in granular synthesis, here some suggestions you need to talk about and testing:
- paul stretch (cult, huge, awesome, free, and also now as VST) - ruclips.net/video/6Tc3rswaRt0/видео.html
- accsone crusher-X (seen on superbooth 18) its a very complex complicate looking and huge granular synth, but expensive and heavy GUI
- RIBS - hvoyaaudio.itch.io/ribs, can be a FX with recording function, playable, layering, polyphony, filter inside, free/ name your price
- dblue Stretch V1.1, no Gui VST, nice to play with Bitwig Modulators, Phase DLY, REV
- Dont forget the NI Reaktor User Library
- Padshop Pro
- And you will not like it but..."Grain" of Propellerheads Reason is nice too

Stay tuned, Cheers.
Yeah, many good suggestions again. There are millions of products and I have this little time on this little earth planet. =) Bitwig Sampler, Mangler, Form and Omnisphere 2 plugins makes me reach the ideas in my head so I stay with them. ;) Nebulae would be awesome though. Love the sound and quality of that one...it's sick! Thanks for the nice comment my friend! Great suggestions for the community!
@@MattiasHolmgren hahah* okay, i understand this my friend. For me, i am more fixed to get a spectral an informations as going deeper into one or two. So, in some interessting topics i suck the informations into my nerdy brain and, like here, i spit it out xD...sombebody and you will get my wide-ranging information then ...thats the plan :D
I have a old Qubit-Nebulae Modul in my Eurorack-System...nice to know, loading Instruments build with "csound" and "puredata" into it...u cant go wrong with this nice Modul. Huge fun* =)
I envy your Nebulae hehe. Thanks for writing, always good to hear your fresh opinion on topics.
I think form is more of a sampler than granular synth
Hi, oh, well I think Form, since it does not feature multisampling etc. the engine is indeed much more focused on breaking down the sample into grains and manipulating the grains in various ways rather than straight sample playing. But if we draw a hard line they all play back samples. Then again they do feature the same parts as a synth. Oscillator = the sample, unison settings, amp envelope, filter, filter envelope, effect section. It also features and extra synth oscillator you can turn on. So it’s indeed synth capabilities. If you just select a small part (one cycle) of the sample its the same thing as a regular synth. We can call it whatever but it does granular synthesis method very well. It’s able to stretch out the sample and make it play much longer than a regular sampler would (the sound would just fall apart in a regular sampler at extreme pitch settings). 😉
The Mangle...RIP
The Mangle...rocks from the grave! ;)
@@MattiasHolmgren Why are all these people saying Mangle is "dead"? The author's website is still there and he seems to be still selling it and working on other products.
I'd like to know, because I wouldn't want to buy an unsuppoted plugin.
Yuri Andropov hi, I haven’t looked into it because I never saw any need to contact the developer for support. It has worked flawlessley since the day I bought it. If you feel concern about buying a product do write the developer about any questions you might have. Cheers, Mattias
UVI
I will be reviewing UVI Falcon next week. ;)
UVI Falcon Review - ruclips.net/video/sHjlm3eKnGM/видео.html Thanks!
A new player just entered the scene: slateandash.com/products/cycles
Yeah Cycles looks like a neat take on granular synthesis and effects processing.
Mangle is buggy as hell and the dev is AWOL, such a shame, preset don't save properly, it's unusable
Oh, I never bumped into any bugg while using the Mangle. Though I didn’t do too much weird routing within the plug either. Did you ever try Form from NI?
@@MattiasHolmgren Not yet I may do when i have £99
One word: Ribs ruclips.net/video/MOPs13L1yl0/видео.html
Looks like a cool take on granular synthesis Jai. ;)
holy hd
HD? hd quality. 😋
indiana jones thexe
Indy! ;D Love the series, Harrison Ford rocks, and the music of John Williams. 👑🌞
Your own voice drowns out the music....
Still a very popular video. I try to improve on every video. Thanks for the feedback. 🌞
Thank you, really like the interface for Mangle. Hadn't seen that one before. Will have to check it out. Been using Omnisphere for this, because I just always end up in Omnisphere for some reason haha. All 4 look like great options though.
Hi, yeah The Mangle is a hidden gem among the granular synths out there. It's small but that visual representation of all the grains makes it easier to tune in than the other options. Give it a spin. Omnisphere is cool too, since it also includes a ton of effects you can apply (like that resonator IR fx which can take the sounds to other worlds). Thanks for writing!

damn
that sounds great
like bladerunner kinda atmosphere
Thanks yes granular synthesis often fall into the blade rinner atmospheric field. 🥳🌞
@@MattiasHolmgren have you tried portal yet? Holy shit its awesome. Has many granular effects
