  • Flying in the Jump Seat of a SIA Boeing 747 (Reg: 9V-SQR) with a cockpit view and taking off from the Male International Airport, The Maldives back in 1989. The runway looked like an aircraft carrier and it was made from crushed coral and seashells and sand. The crew and myself stayed at the beautiful Kurumba Village. From what I remember, SIA had two flights to Male Airport and they were the only airline landing 747's on this tiny atoll runway with specially trained captains for this specific runway. My partner at the time was a SIA stewardess, a real 'Singapore Girl' :)

Thanks, yes, these were the early days of Male, Maldives opening up for mass tourism and there were other aircraft, TriStars, DC10's etc.. However, SIA were the only ones landing Boeing 747's at the time. Incredible pilots! ;)
