Even with all things human, Julie continues to be an absolutely priceless and beautiful gift, from above, to us.
Great job for Julie to keep her ground when Barbara was trying to break her down to tears. All I can say, is I had tears at the end. Barbara kept pushing her and pushing her, as though she wanted to break Julie's calm, noble reserve and make her become emotional. Julie's sadness was palpable, but she remained dignified throughout. Barbara Walters is such an asshole. Julie Andrews on the whole is a very lucky person. She had a wonderful singing career for 50 years, and that's more than most people ever get. She is incredibly brave - not many people could answer those questions with such grace and composure. Brought tears to my eyes to see her contemplating such a profound loss. She's an inspiration.
Don't hate the messenger. She asked those questions so that rumors of that day could get cleared up. Barbara Walters wasn't trying to hurt Mrs. Andrews. She was just trying to get rumors cleared up. There's a reason why Celebrities respect Barbara Walters.
TheNancyc1, thank you for setting the matter straight about Ms. Walters. The clueless young people (who are complaining here) don't respect one whose job it is to professionally pry and evoke.
@@TheWriterWalker I don't know, I think there's a way to get to the truth without probing for the sake of a few tears. One more thing, just because you don't agree with "the clueless young people", you do not have to be so rude and insulting.
@@NightOwlReader2790, thank you for your comment. As for the second part of what you wrote, I say that "rude and insulting" are good things for clueless young people to experience. It toughens them up, snatches them out of their emotional safe spaces, makes them grow up and become useful citizens -- unless, of course, someone keeps defending them under the belief that they need to be coddled.

It has been almost fourteen years, and yet I tear up when I hear Julie talk about her desire to sing again. She is a true lady, classy and will always be first in my love of actors.
So hard to see the look in her eyes at the end of this video when she says it will change something inside of her forever. Have to hand it to this lady, though. She has overcome it and moved on. It turns out her speaking voice is loved just as much as her signing voice. I love Julie Andrews. She seems such a warm and genuine person. She exudes class. It must be something to know her in person.
I wrote Julie Andrews a letter...4-5 years ago..I had written of my operation on my left chord...in Madrid.. in 1969 (26 yrs. old)...after having studied in Milano for 2 years. Before I returned to Madrid in ('69) had been offered a contract at La Scala..from Ghiringhelli...I was a dramatic coloratura. I, too, was promised by the surgeon that my voice would be perfect after...I couldn't speak for 3 months, had to write everything down...had to go to therapy for a year... at the "deaf and mute school" in Madrid, to learn how to talk.... It took me 10 years to get my voice back...I found a way to phonate correctly and heal the scar tissue. I began to work on the Bel Canto repertoire. I had had a 3+ octave range as a young girl..very big voice...and the best of this journey...was...that I recuperated my voice completely...from E3 to F#6. I have sung (back to back) performances of Norma, Traviata, Donna Anna, Juliet, Santuzza, Pirata, Ballo in Maschera...and many more. I am 78 and am vocalizing up to Bb 5...I write this as I KNOW I COULD HAVE GOTTEN JULIE'S VOICE BACK..her voice sounds just like I did..raspy and husky..until I was able to find my way to work the cords properly...without any strain. I have rehabilitated many singers and speakers, teachers etc...to enjoy their passion. I would have loved to work on her voice.
I always hated this interviewer....she always pushes people by asking dumb and always slightly offensive questions (or at least she says them in an insensitive way) until they're either uncomfortable or (as in julie andrew's case, at least from what it looks like) about to cry
She was always an horrible woman! I hate her, and I'm not sad about the fact that she is gone from this world. She was a mean, disgusting interviewer. Good ridance!!
When Julie said ask me in a couple of years and Barbara said “what if it doesn’t,” the sadness that came over Julie’s eyes just killed me. Seriously my favorite actress and singer of all time. I just can’t...😥
I know how she feels. I had sang opera and had a neck injury requiring surgery. although they told me I would never sing again. I had to choose walk or sing. walking won out.
Margo Miko I sang with the Symphony and at Church. After having vocal cord surgery, not able to sing high notes anymore & voice cracks. It's devastating! Staying positive & praying freq.
And people wonder why I love Princess Diaries 2 so much. It was the first movie she sang in after the surgery, and she sounded just as beautiful. She is such a gorgeous and wonderful person. She is the picture of classy.
Julie Andrews sang for King George VI when she was only 12 years old. She’s been singing for most of her life. That’s how she has made a living throughout her life. She must have been totally heartbroken when she lost her singing voice several decades ago. It was also a huge loss for all of us millions of people across the world who love her.
It is but today she is still using her talents after 73 years of professional work even if her glorious voice is gone. Dame Julie Andrews will always remain legendary.
I'm not going to deny it, I was devastated back in the late 90s when J.A. was forced to retire from singing, but even if she'd never had that botched operation, she still might not be able to sing like she used to since she's in her 80s. Besides, since retiring from singing, Julie has enjoyed a fantastically successful career collaborating on children's books with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton.
That really saddens me. What a terrible thing to take something so joyful away from someone. I grew up singing with Julie Andrews in my living room as I watched her on tv. I can remember pretending she was there singing with me. Thank you Julie for the greatest memories
Julie Andrews has been a part of my life since I was 10 years old and she was starring on Broadway in "My Fair Lady." She was just 20 years of age when she began that fabulous run and I will never forget the night my mother came home from that show and blurted out her glowing review of, not just the show, but of Julie Andrews! She fairly glowed every time she spoke of it and as soon as the first cast recording was out we had it in the house and it was played over and over again. I had never heard her issue such accolades, and have never since, known my mother to be so entirely complimentary of anyone! The entire cast seemed perfectly chosen and suited to their roles. I knew every word of every song and soliloquy within weeks and have never forgotten them. When I moved from home, I had to get my own copy of the album and, since other recordings had been made, was on the hunt for the original. After a long search, I was finally able to get a copy. It was the best of the best and almost 60 years later, I still play it. I have been in love with, and in awe of, Julie Andrews since the moment I first heard her sing and the rest, as they say, is history. To me, all her roles, including those that were strictly dramatic, have been like gems in a golden crown. It is however, inconceivable, that she would not be able to sing again. It is, quite simply, too devastating to think of...ludicrous, appalling and heartbreaking. I am aware that, since this interview was aired, she is singing and performing limited engagements once again and thank God for small favors! We don't have her full voice to listen to and probably never will, but we have her singing to & for us again...and for me, that's all that matters! God bless you Dame Julie and for all the joys you have given us for so many years...I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
What a lady. Her response to the final question, coupled with the beginning of that line from The Sound of Music moved me to tears. God Bless you Dame Julie.
I only shed a single tear this entire thing but then seeing the way she was hurt when she was asked what she would do if she never could sing again I was about to lose it then “and I’ll sing once more” played and I sobbed. Julie Andrews was and is a very big part of my life and I still cry every time I watch her sing in the Princess Diaries
Bless her. She looked so unbelievably heartbroken in this interview and I feel for her so much even though this interview was years ago. I'm a singer myself and hope to do it as my profession and I can't fathom how tragic my life would become if I lost my voice.
Julie has so much class, i mean if i was her getting interviewed by Barbra Walters i would smack her face. I mean Barbra was like relishing this upsetting topic, like have some compassion!
Julie Andrews adopted children. I wish I had been adopted by Julie Andrews. I would have been such a happy child and I know I would have always had peace inside.
No words to console such a devastating loss. We can be thankful she gave us all she had while she was able. Her gift will live on in infamy. Bravo! 👏❤️
Julie Andrews is such a spectacular women who has achieved so much in her life time...I sang Edelweiss to my momma while they were removing her life support system... We always watch The Sound of Music Together... That was one of my fondest memories that I shared with my momma... God bless you and thank you
I watched Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music all throughout my childhood but only now at the age of 18 - at that strange time when you are beginning to wonder how to act like a convincing adult (!) - am I starting to see and pick up on the wonderful qualities which Julie Andrews possesses. So charming and warm - a true role model.
Can anyone imagine what a painful experience it must be for an accomplished singer with a world renowned voice, after surgery to lose so much of the beauty and power of her voice, to only be able to sing several lower notes and then verbally speak the lyrics to the higher notes that she once was able to perform with ease?? It must be devastating .. I could not watch these performances without tears in my eyes ! Since this interview (2010 shows) Her voice is back a bit but nowhere what it used to be..
So sad. I had wondered what happened to her voice. It must rip her heart out to not be able to sing at all. I have lost much of my own voice through illness, but at least I can still sing some for my own pure enjoyment and I never had a world renowned voice or career to begin with. I've enjoyed her voice my whole life and it's fortunate that we have so much of her voice recorded to enjoy now, I admire her very much as a person for being able to talk about this with Barbara Walters and go public with such a painful subject for her. I have been very happy to see her in film since this interview and look forward to as many future projects with her in them as possible as well. She is beloved for more than just her voice and is always a treat to watch as an actress even if she never is able to really sing again. Injuries, age, and changes happen to us all in life,,,it has been great to see her change and adapt rather than disappear from us forever.
I am crying Jenna....tragic. Such a wholesome voice ruined by incompetence. What a shame. I feel so badly for her. After a lifetime of entertaining she does not deserve this. I pray that you will eventually get your voice back Julie...but if not take solace from the joy you have brought to the world during your long career. God bless.
I will absolutely be going to Julie Andrews one of my first thing sin Heaven to hear that restoration of such an incredible voice. What a heart breaking thing to go through. Just hurts my heart. I am so glad she hasn't committed suicide or something in trying to cope. She gave us some of the best vocals for so many many years. Can't wait to hear that voice in Heaven!
And very hard as a surgeon to realize you just permanently destroyed the voice of the one and only Julie Andrews. How does he live with himself, whether it was avoidable or not? I wouldn't be in his shoes for anything. What a thing to live with. But nothing compared to what she has to live with.
when sh was asked "and then if it's still no?", the look on Julie's face.. You can see straight into her soul, her heart and see how much this has/is killing her... So much pain, and uncertainty... My heart stopped and i teared up.. But it wasn't until she took a breath, after stating it would change something deep inside her, smiled and collected herself that i cried... She is a lady through and through. An absolutely amazing, strong woman
*Barbara has no grace. This is not a criminal investigation trying to solve a murder, this is an interview of a talented woman losing her voice tragically.*
Thank you, dearest Julie Andrews, for your otherworldly celestial voice. We’re forever grateful that your exquisitely angelic, beautiful voice has been recorded to eternally live on💫💕💫
she is a part of my history as a child. My father had studio quality components and voice of the theather speakers in our home...Her records were part of the family.
I'm so glad she sang a little in The Princess Diaries 2, it always makes me feel emotional. It's just such a lovely song and you can just tell what a really special moment it is for Julie and everyone else on set 💖
Closing scene from this Julie Andrews interview - “…and I’ll siiinnnggg once more…” from Sound of Music. I just about lost it. I was already so sad watching Julie talk about losing her voice from that botched throat operation, but when that last scene came on, I could only sob for her tremendous personal loss and for her many fans’ and my loss of never hearing her sing again with her gift voice. As “Mary Poppins Returns” recently came out, Julie was asked to cameo in this sequel, but she graciously declined saying “the film should be Emily’s show”. If Julie appeared, she didn’t want viewers to think “There’s the real Mary Poppins”. She wanted Emily to interpret Mary Poppins her own way. Dame Julie Andrews - lady of great class! It was great seeing Julie’s former co-star Dick Van Dyke reprise his role as Mr. Dawes (Jr.), singing & dancing at age 93!
Remember hearing she lost voice due to "Victor Victoria" musical on Broadway. Liza filled in for her and also had to have vocal surgery due to damage done. They told Liza she would never sing again but Liza traveled the world and worked with all kinds of specialists and gained some of her voice back, but it was never completely healed. So the demands of one musical cost two of our greatest singers enormously. What a price to pay.
Unbelievably heartbreaking... I am always in tears by the end of the video, literally crying. I'm a singer too, so it makes it really difficult, because I know exactly what she was losing. There can't be any other way to describe the experience except heart-wrenching, devestating, and life-altering. I cannot imagine a world without my singing voice without nearly bursting into tears. And then this wonderfully classy and mature lady deals with a (excuse my French) shitheaded, intrusive, prying, gossip-hungry, inconsiderate, unfeeling woman who cares more about having an interesting interview than about Julie's emotions and feelings. My heart practically broke in two when she said "I think it will change something inside of me forever..." and then the Sound of Music track cuts in with "and I'll sing once more". She's right. It would change something inside of a person for as long as they live. What a strong lady. I respect her for many things, many many things, but the one thing I respect her for the most is the unbelievable way she handled this situation. Many people have gone through struggles in their lives, but none have handled it with the amount of grace, poise, maturity, and strength as this wonderful women. We love you, Julie!!

She is incredibly brave - not many people could answer those questions with such grace and composure. Brought tears to my eyes to see her contemplating such a profound loss. She's an inspiration.
She's so classy and keeps so composed throughout the interview, while I was literally in tears.
Man..this interview is very very depressing and I can't stand Barbara, the interviewer!
yes but barbra strisand is a different story
Of course, many people are curious about how this or that celebrity felt when something happens in their life. I think a really good journalist can have the celebrities open up a bit about their personal lives without being blatantly intrusive and rude about it.
Do you not give up Julie you're a wonderful lady God bless you.
God willing, the Lord will restore her voice in heaven.
hold on a sec there, it better not be soon, she has a whole new career going, plus i havent met her, so basically she isnt allowed to go to heaven just yet.
+Shams Islam exactly
Julie Andrews, what a class act! What grace and eloquence. A true STAR of stage and screen! Love you Miss Andrews!
It has been almost fourteen years, and yet I tear up when I hear Julie talk about her desire to sing again. She is a true lady, classy and will always be first in my love of actors.
Just hearing her voice is music to my ears!
You can tell she still has the warmth that makes us want to come up to her for a kiss or hear a bedtime story
Such a dignified, classy lady, and a 'proper' celebrity. Nowadays so-called celebrities cry over everything and nothing.
What a classy lady.
It breaks my heart. I want to give Julie 100 hugs to comfort this beautiful woman. Who’s with me?
She was always an horrible woman! I hate her, and I'm not sad about the fact that she is gone from this world. She was a mean, disgusting interviewer. Good ridance!!
Great Dame Julie Andrews will always be the best for me. She accomplished everything in her carrer. No doubt she is a real Queen in our hearts.
my heart just breaks for her. i love julie so much. from the time i was a little girl, she has always been such an inspiration to me.
Such poise and dignity! Bravo, Madame Andrews!
I had to choose walk or sing. walking won out.
i am so sorry this happened to you, sending hugs
Margo Miko im sorry
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your heart will be blessed with the sound of music, and you'll sing once more~~~
Bless Julie Andrews.
That really saddens me. What a terrible thing to take something so joyful away from someone. I grew up singing with Julie Andrews in my living room as I watched her on tv. I can remember pretending she was there singing with me. Thank you Julie for the greatest memories
2018 and still devastated 😢
😢😭✨…
2024 and still devastated. I’m sure we all are. What a legend.❤
@@YOURCAPSLOCKISON yes i agree 2024 and i'm devastated
What a world we live in when Julie Andrew's voice is taken away. What a remarkable woman.
Couldn't agree more😢✨…
Crying. She was so calm and graceful through the whole thing and the reporter was just rubbing it in and asking the most obvious questions
Bless her. She looked so unbelievably heartbroken in this interview and I feel for her so much even though this interview was years ago. I'm a singer myself and hope to do it as my profession and I can't fathom how tragic my life would become if I lost my voice.
Such a beautiful voice, really God given. You are so grand a woman, you have gone on to expand your career. You are so lovely.
She's a magnificent talent, a woman of rare dignity and class.
How she held it together is beyond me, because I was tearing up with every question Barbara was posing her...what a classy lady.
Julie has so much class, i mean if i was her getting interviewed by Barbra Walters i would smack her face. I mean Barbra was like relishing this upsetting topic, like have some compassion!
Oh Julie! What a sweetheart 🥺. Her voice was a huge part of her but her charm is all she needs at this point!
Julie Andrews adopted children. I wish I had been adopted by Julie Andrews. I would have been such a happy child and I know I would have always had peace inside.
No words to console such a devastating loss. We can be thankful she gave us all she had while she was able. Her gift will live on in infamy. Bravo! 👏❤️
What a great lost... :'( Poor Julie, must have been devastating losing her brilliantly beautiful singing voice. Anyways she will always be a star
Poor Julie Andrews. I can only say that she is an inspiring legend and that we will always love her, with or without her old voice.
So sad, she had such a beautiful voice. It would be devastating to anyone if the same thing happened to them.
Seriously, a tragedy. Just so sad for her but you will forever be one of the greats
Julie Andrews is such a spectacular women who has achieved so much in her life time...I sang Edelweiss to my momma while they were removing her life support system... We always watch The Sound of Music Together... That was one of my fondest memories that I shared with my momma... God bless you and thank you
did anyone else just want to hug julie?
I watched Mary Poppins and The Sound Of Music all throughout my childhood but only now at the age of 18 - at that strange time when you are beginning to wonder how to act like a convincing adult (!) - am I starting to see and pick up on the wonderful qualities which Julie Andrews possesses. So charming and warm - a true role model.
We lost the voice that represented the sound that angels make.
You can just see how upset she is, it’s in her eyes and the way she is talking slowly you can tell how hurt she was.
So sad. I had wondered what happened to her voice. It must rip her heart out to not be able to sing at all. I have lost much of my own voice through illness, but at least I can still sing some for my own pure enjoyment and I never had a world renowned voice or career to begin with. I've enjoyed her voice my whole life and it's fortunate that we have so much of her voice recorded to enjoy now,
I admire her very much as a person for being able to talk about this with Barbara Walters and go public with such a painful subject for her.
She to me definitely looks and acts like a queen
It's really sad Julie lost her singing voice! I bet the surgeon who damaged her vocal cords feels really guilty!
I hope they do smh
very hard to think as a surgeon to realize you are about to operate on Julie Andrew's throat
And very hard as a surgeon to realize you just permanently destroyed the voice of the one and only Julie Andrews. How does he live with himself, whether it was avoidable or not? I wouldn't be in his shoes for anything. What a thing to live with. But nothing compared to what she has to live with.
He is forever known as the ent surgeon that took Julie Andrews voice
@@karalaalexander7124 As he should be.
One of the classiest and talented performers to ever live!
Poor Julie :( I love her and her voice singing or not. This put me on the brink of tears. Julie is truly Dame Julie Andrews
when sh was asked "and then if it's still no?", the look on Julie's face..
Julie is SO brave. I can't believe she managed to stay so eloquent while discussing such a tragedy. I still remember when I saw this on TV. I BAWLED!
😢✨…
*Barbara has no grace. This is not a criminal investigation trying to solve a murder, this is an interview of a talented woman losing her voice tragically.*
Thank you, dearest Julie Andrews, for your otherworldly celestial voice. We’re forever grateful that your exquisitely angelic, beautiful voice has been recorded to eternally live on💫💕💫
That's so sad at the end of the interview. Julie is always a person that i look up too. She is simply the best no matter what and how.
This is the most heartbreaking thing to happen to musical theatre
Thank goodness for recordings. I feel for her.
I simply cannot imagine such a shift in life: something so essential to a person being taken away.😔
she is a part of my history as a child. My father had studio quality components and voice of the theather speakers in our home...Her records were part of the family.
l want to give Julie a BIG hug!!
The worst story since Whitney married Bobby. God awe-full. Thank you people for older videos of this grand lady! Edelweiss forever!
I'm so glad she sang a little in The Princess Diaries 2, it always makes me feel emotional. It's just such a lovely song and you can just tell what a really special moment it is for Julie and everyone else on set 💖
That scene was the only reason I went to see the movie ironically.
i know there's a lot of tragedy in the world but when i think about julie andrews having her voice taken away my heart aches
Thank-you for the music, the song I'm singing. Thanks for all the joy you gave.....
Such is life a lovely and very humble lady.
Lori Romano Well, Liza may have hurt her voice by overdrinking. Not sure if she smoked or not.
Liza was - and is - a heavy smoker. No doubt it contributed to the decline of her voice, as well.
After my thyroidectomy I too have lost my voice. It is very difficult to deal with. I only hope for a miracle like Julie’s. Classy lady.
Very gracious, candid and composed handling of the very hard questions. Very unfortunate accident; hoping she will be able to recover damages. We all lost.
Love her so sorry about her voice
"How did you feel when you discovered you couldn't sing anymore...."
"I was delighted.. over the moon...."
Dear God has continued to bless you and your wonderful Person, mother, grandmother and I believe I heard a Great Grandmother. May He give you a strong wonderful life with your family and friends!
Julie Andrews is the most beautiful genuine highly talented there is in this industry! She still till this day has a beautiful voice, but watching this was heartbreaking when Barbara Walter keeps banging on 'You can't sing' 'You can't sing high notes....' THAT does alot to ones self esteem and confidence! Yes her voice is the subject of this interview but there was no need for that! We all empathise with Julie, she's an absolute legend and one of many real stars out there, you could at least sound more sympathetic aswell as trying to uplift her spirit you know, not drowning the words ' You can't sing...you can't sing' down her ears! Ranr over but am sure most of you all will agree. If I met Barbara myself I would say the same thing and also say, take a look at Julie now!
