  • This video is not about perfection, I do not claim to be a master builder or chef. However, I wanted something that's reasonably priced and something I could call my own and so far I love it.
    I'd dare to say I am achieving great results with this smoker and I hope you can learn something and build your own to your liking as well!

    Awesome build. If I may, please don't use lighter fluid to turn your smoker on. There are a million other things to start your fire without introducing chemical tastes into your food. A couple wax cubes or tumbleweeds are a good choice

    • @TheFenderman
      @TheFenderman  2 года назад

      Agreed, that was the initial burn to get the outside coated with a protective layer of oil. However!! I do have another video about fire starting in which I use one of those very same wax things. Thanks for checking it out and the awesome comment!!

    Well done!! I watched this entire video! I want a stick burner, but the wife says, “NO” to a $4K cooker, so I thought about building my own. Unfortunately though, I don’t have literally ANY of the welding or cutting tools that I would need let alone the ACTUAL steel, or even the protective equipment, etc. even though I think I could do it, I have a feeling I would spend more on the equipment than just buying a pre-built smoker. I want a REAL pit, like a Mill Scale, Fat Stack, Workhorse or Smoke North. Not some thin skinned hardware store bullshit that’s gonna rust through in two years.

    • @TheFenderman
      @TheFenderman  2 года назад +2

      I was reading this and was thinking, you know what? You've got a great point! Theoretically, making one out of wood would be cheaper and require far less tools. That might be the way to go! If I had the room I'd probably build one but hey! There's an idea for ya! A little wood burning stove connected to a doghouse sized smoke chamber, and you might be in business!

    Watching offset builds is therapy IMHO. About the door Ive seen many guys do 5-8” sections and rotate on side to other to prevent warping. How thick are 55gal drums?

    • @TheFenderman
      @TheFenderman  Год назад

      Hey I appreciate you checking it out! So to answer your question, annoying to weld thin but not so thin that it becomes a heating issue (Roughly 20 gauge). Basically what happens is (Which I think is a really nice feature) the smoking chamber temps are directly controlled by the fire. If I get it too hot, I can nudge open the fire door and not have to wait a ridiculous amount of time for the smoke chamber to cool off. Which works nicely to run those 225 temps. On the other hand if it's super cold outside it does take a little more work to keep the smoke chamber at an even temp but my thinking is, the grille itself plus the overall volume keeps the heat regulating nicely and the thickness of the collector keeps the smoke moving.

    • @jlpowell8432
      @jlpowell8432 Год назад

      @@TheFenderman right, good stuff! Ive seen some deflector plates also extend lower as well. You have a great foundation there! Also tortillas and grands bisquits can show where the hot spots are. And they make tuning plates for smoke chambers to even out temps, you could make them too. good luck!

    Nice build. I’m doing mine right now. The only thing I would say is do not use lighter fluid in your smoker it can transfer the flavor to the meat.

    • @TheFenderman
      @TheFenderman  2 года назад +1

      Right on! Yeah I needed to do an initial burn and get the smoker HOT so I could season the outside with grease to keep the rust down. Hope yours turns out great!
