If you freeze then thaw the tofu it will fry up even crispier and it’s easier to remove the water too. I tried this and it works!

TOFU LET'S GO! I'm vegan and eat a lot of tofu. To get a meaty texture chuck it into the freezer, don't open the package just put it in there, then you thaw, press, and do your thing. The texture is incredible. Another thing to try is using firm unfrozen! You break it up and season it like eggs, google "tofu scramble", same seasonings you usually use like onion and garlic powder, then there is black salt that can give it eggy taste, a pinch goes a long way, and nutritional yeast for umami. This was a fun video!

I was raised on tofu, seaweed and miso soup in the 80’s, before it was popular. I’m not vegan as an adult, but I still include tofu in my recipes. I’ve never made it like this, but I’m definitely going to! You can also crumble it, add black beans and taco seasoning for tacos or in chili. Great source of protein for meatless Mondays.

I'm glad you tried tofu.. I personally love it. Just a suggestion ; after pressing to get the excess water out, 1) break/tear them apart
    2) add pepper and chicken bullion to the pieces of Tofu
    3) freeze it for a couple of hours or overnight (I do a big batch and just keep them in the freezer for easy no thaw dinners)
    4) repeat all the steps for dredge, wet and dry
    5) fry
The texture will be closer to a chicken breast nugget. Hope you try it

I absolutely loved this video! I am vegan and can tell you that tofu tastes like whatever you marinate it in, sauce it up in or dip it in. One of my fav's is a tofu parmesan recipe that cut into "finger" like pieces or slices and then dip in a batter of plant milk and flour and then in a mixture of panko bread crumbs with whatever spices you like (I use Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder and some nutritional yeast) and then air fry it or fry in oil. Dip in marinara sauce or whatever you like and it's so good! If you want a denser product definitely freeze the tofu first and then thaw and press.

Aldi’s has my favorite brand of tofu. I use chicken fried rice seasoning and corn starch then fry it or air fry it. I use sweet chili sauce as a coating sauce. Glad you liked it as it absorbs whatever flavor you give it. If you crumble it and use some bacon grease it makes yummy scrambled faux eggs.

Hi Brooke. My partner is a vegetarian, I am not, but as he is the cook in our house I eat mainly veggie food, though he does cook some chicken, sausages or sausage rolls for me, and I do have ham in sandwiches, but mainly I eat the same as him. He confused me one day by asking if I wanted a bacon sandwich, as I knew we had no bacon, proper or veggie, turns out thinly sliced tofu seasoned with smoked paprika and a pinch of veggie stock powder then fried or grilled for a minute or two, tastes (not looks) like bacon. A word of warning, do NOT over cook tofu, as in our experience it goes either really hard or gets like a pencil eraser, and tastes like rubber. It basically needs to be cooked fairly quickly but not on to high a heat. I hope you try out a few other dishes, we find Asian food works best for us.
Much love and respect, Jo. xxxxx

I grew up in a meat lovers family. Giving you something to try, in budget times if your making chili add 1# of tofu check internet on how to make resemble crumbled ground beef (I always check ) if you are making for a huge crowd add 1# of ground chicken. This can double your meat, in chili, stew, soup, tacos, even meat loaf, meat balls. Don't skimp on seasoning. Take your time. You can make best smoothies. Hugs, love, blessings & prayers to all.❤

We used to use it as fish sticks. Deep fried it and served it with tartar sauce. Our kids loved it that way. Tofu will work as anything because it has a base of nothing. So whatever your season it as is what it's going to taste like. We can put it in soups or eat it like you did as chicken or fish. Just remember it picks up the flavor that you season it as. It's a good thing to get used to. I wouldn't want to eat it everyday, but it's something good to have your little handy duty refrigerator. Something you can go to when you haven't got any other protein to work with. Thanks for sharing. Did a great job

I am so glad you had a good experience! I was an extreme tofu hater my whole life--but had never tried it. When I finally gave it a chance, and learned the ways to cook it, I found out how versatile and delicious it can be. People just need to make sure to buy firm or above for the chicken like texture. It comes out great in the air fryer cubed with just soy sauce or sesame oil, and can be tossed in any sauce after. No need to go through the cornstarch process every time.

Freezing and thawing tofu helps release the liquid but also marinate the tofu after it thaws out. It soaks up whatever flavor you add to it, so marinating can make a big difference too. Freezing it helps the texture a bit as well.

  • @authorlydiagreen1862
    @authorlydiagreen1862 24 дня назад +3

You should freeze it, thaw it out and freeze it again to get the best texture. I normally freeze and thaw mine two to three times and than I will press the liquid out and do the lite sodium soy sauce as a base and throw all my seasonings in and let it sit for an hour before cooking.

I made "chicken" parmesan, curry, creole and many other dishes, including subbing it for some of the mozzarella cheese in a Caprice salad! I started using it when my mother in law needed more protein but had trouble chewing and digesting meats. I also substitute potatoes, or cauliflower, or sometimes even mirliton for the meat. I find if fun.

I eat meat now, but was vegetarian for like 8 years. I highly recommend making "chicken nuggets" with tofu. Bread them and bake in the oven. If seasoned well they can be super tastey! I also often just make tofu and black bean tacos. It really will take on the taste of whatever you put on it. My toddler loves tofu scramble, i literally just cook it on the stove, all broken up, season with whatever. Even some chicken bullion powder.

Tofu is soooo goooood. I put it in everything, smoothies, meat filler, meat substitute - I'm not a vegetarian or anything, I'm just not super into meat. I dunno, just never had a taste for it.
But tofu is extremely versatile, if you think you could use it in something, chances are good you can. Just need to pay attention to the firmness and type. It has a flavor, but not a very strong one, so it tends to take on the flavors around it pretty easily. You can also just fry little battered blocks of it, it's so good.

This looks really good! I usually do a dry version and toss it in sweet Thai chili sauce from a bottle. Next time, I'll try it with the egg and milk and your triple-dredge system - I like the texture it gives on the outside of the cubes.
An old roommate of mine had a version where she would press it, cube it, then dredge it in a mixture of cornstarch, garam masala spice, and flaked coconut, then in egg, then in the first mixture again, then fried 'til crisp. To serve, she would make a simple dip of mayo and honey. Wow, it was so good.
Another quick recipe: cut the tofu in thinnish squares (from the narrow end of the whole block), about a half inch thick. Blot dry. Make a simple teriyaki sauce of soy sauce, water, bit of sugar, garlic, maybe hot sauce if you like. Fry the squares in some oil, and when they are almost crispy enough, pour in the sauce, keep frying , and let the sauce thicken, caramelize, and coat the squares. Then, make a sandwich with them, adding whatever you like, such as shredded lettuce or cabbage, mayo for the bread, tomatoes.....

White slab😂😂😂😂 him and his flat-ironed beard. He’s-a hipster eating tofu
Tofu is wonderful. At 52!ate it for the first time in the early 80’s my father had a reggae band. And we ate lots of vegetarian food from his band mates
Once you’ve had it, you can’t go back. You will eat it again. Silken tofu makes a delicious non-dairy chocolate pudding that’s out of this world.

You might want to try freezing it before cooking as it makes it chewier and denser. When thawed it really soaks up any sauces and marinades and is even better. Sometimes I cut it into cubes before freezing it, sometimes I don't and will just slice it to fry like chicken patties. Also, silken tofu works great in desserts. Silken tofu chocolate mousse is delicious. My husband and I aren't vegans, but cooked correctly we are happy to eat tofu. Good is good!

I have been eating tofu since the 1970’s, when I was first out on my own (old hippie here). I like it a lot and even get cravings for it if I haven’t had any in a while.
Pressing it is good - but not always necessary, depending on what you are using it for.
Your sons like Japanese food. You might want to find some Japanese ways of preparing tofu.

You should like it cause tofu is made from soy beans!!! It will take on any flavor. Like Asian peanut chicken. I suggest you look at some asian recipes. Might try adding some veggies. Bet pineapple would be good with it.

If you press it a little longer and marinade it like chicken it'll take on even more flavor! I am a tofu lover!!!

This was funny to see Dusty’s reaction! So true about the connotation’s of tofu. If you press the water out first, then marinate it, it’s way more delicious!

Tofu can be a bit of an acquired taste but it’s so versatile! It tends to take on the flavors you give it, so makes a great base for a lot of dishes.

I love tofu (so does my super carnivore husband) and love that you're willing to try it! I usually press it for over an hour. There are also ways to crumble it and play around with textures

I love tofu! You should do a series with different recipes. Look up what happens when you freeze tofu, thaw it, and then cook it. The texture changes, so good!

You did great! Most folks who cook with tofu for the first couple of times try to "cook" the tofu (which is unnecessary) and end up burning the outside. Yours looked fantastic and I could almost taste what you've made (and I'm drooling 😀). And bravo on Dusty for trying the tofu with an open mind!
You can also add some chicken or beef bullion powder to your cornstarch dredge and sauce if you want more meat flavor tp the tofu cubes. It makes a good sweet and sour if you use beef bullion powder.

If you want a spongier firmer texture, freeze your tofu & then press it. You can also marinade it for long periods of time. I also make a chocolate cream pie with it. So many great tofu recipes! So happy you tried it! ❤

Kudos to you Brooke, even though you were unsure you tried it. And, you did alot of research before hand. Thank you for the info and demo. I'm kinda like Dusty, it would be hard for me if I knew what it was!! But I should tey it anyway if several have said it takes on the flavors of what you cook it with. ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊

I'm glad that you two were brave enough to try it! If you freeze the tofu in the package and then defrost it in the refrigerator it will completely change the texture, it will taste more like meat. I like it a lot better that way. Were your boys brave enough to try it?😁❤️
