I don't press my tofu, I just blot it with a paper towel. ALDI has their Organic tofu for $1.75. Don't throw away the water the tofu is packed in. Water your plants or flowers with it. Oh, by the way Dusty's rating complements your cooking skills 💖
TOFU LET'S GO! I'm vegan and eat a lot of tofu. To get a meaty texture chuck it into the freezer, don't open the package just put it in there, then you thaw, press, and do your thing. The texture is incredible. Another thing to try is using firm unfrozen! You break it up and season it like eggs, google "tofu scramble", same seasonings you usually use like onion and garlic powder, then there is black salt that can give it eggy taste, a pinch goes a long way, and nutritional yeast for umami. This was a fun video!
Brooke... I cook for 250 people. I cook alot of tofu. Freeze it before you use it. Totally changes the texture. Makes it even more like chicken. It's yummy
I was raised on tofu, seaweed and miso soup in the 80’s, before it was popular. I’m not vegan as an adult, but I still include tofu in my recipes. I’ve never made it like this, but I’m definitely going to! You can also crumble it, add black beans and taco seasoning for tacos or in chili. Great source of protein for meatless Mondays.
I'm glad you tried tofu.. I personally love it. Just a suggestion ; after pressing to get the excess water out, 1) break/tear them apart 2) add pepper and chicken bullion to the pieces of Tofu 3) freeze it for a couple of hours or overnight (I do a big batch and just keep them in the freezer for easy no thaw dinners) 4) repeat all the steps for dredge, wet and dry 5) fry The texture will be closer to a chicken breast nugget. Hope you try it
Add a few crunchy stir fried veggies to help distract from the texture a bit and you will absolutely love it. Thanks for trying something new. Love you guys.
I absolutely loved this video! I am vegan and can tell you that tofu tastes like whatever you marinate it in, sauce it up in or dip it in. One of my fav's is a tofu parmesan recipe that cut into "finger" like pieces or slices and then dip in a batter of plant milk and flour and then in a mixture of panko bread crumbs with whatever spices you like (I use Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder and some nutritional yeast) and then air fry it or fry in oil. Dip in marinara sauce or whatever you like and it's so good! If you want a denser product definitely freeze the tofu first and then thaw and press.
This video needs to go viral, especially dustys reaction. This was one of the most honest, raw, funny and open minded food review videos I've seen. Love y'all! ❤️
Aldi’s has my favorite brand of tofu. I use chicken fried rice seasoning and corn starch then fry it or air fry it. I use sweet chili sauce as a coating sauce. Glad you liked it as it absorbs whatever flavor you give it. If you crumble it and use some bacon grease it makes yummy scrambled faux eggs.
My daughter who is vegetarian likes tofu it's okay it usually takes on the taste of whatever you're cooking. To have it taste a little more like chicken maybe add some bouillon.
Hi Brooke. My partner is a vegetarian, I am not, but as he is the cook in our house I eat mainly veggie food, though he does cook some chicken, sausages or sausage rolls for me, and I do have ham in sandwiches, but mainly I eat the same as him. He confused me one day by asking if I wanted a bacon sandwich, as I knew we had no bacon, proper or veggie, turns out thinly sliced tofu seasoned with smoked paprika and a pinch of veggie stock powder then fried or grilled for a minute or two, tastes (not looks) like bacon. A word of warning, do NOT over cook tofu, as in our experience it goes either really hard or gets like a pencil eraser, and tastes like rubber. It basically needs to be cooked fairly quickly but not on to high a heat. I hope you try out a few other dishes, we find Asian food works best for us. Much love and respect, Jo. xxxxx
I grew up in a meat lovers family. Giving you something to try, in budget times if your making chili add 1# of tofu check internet on how to make resemble crumbled ground beef (I always check ) if you are making for a huge crowd add 1# of ground chicken. This can double your meat, in chili, stew, soup, tacos, even meat loaf, meat balls. Don't skimp on seasoning. Take your time. You can make best smoothies. Hugs, love, blessings & prayers to all.❤
You may have just convinced me to try tofu. I'm with Dusty, I've always been told it's not good. I've always wanted to try it, I just didn't know how to apply it to my taste buds. You did amazing miss Brooke this is right up my alley, I LOVE general tso's. I can't wait to see more of your copycat recipes, I love those SO MUCH!! May God bless 💙💙
Hey, try putting that chicken powder stuff on it before putting it in the batter and cornstarch. Season the tofu with it, so you get the chicken flavor. Love you're videos. Keep up the good work 👍
This looked great! I had to experiment with tofu when I had gallbladder issues a few years ago, and was pleasantly surprised. I had fun with the tofu "egg scramble" recipes and my favorite was when you use it as a ground beef/taco meat dupe baked on a sheet pan with some taco seasoning. Try them! ✌️💜
We used to use it as fish sticks. Deep fried it and served it with tartar sauce. Our kids loved it that way. Tofu will work as anything because it has a base of nothing. So whatever your season it as is what it's going to taste like. We can put it in soups or eat it like you did as chicken or fish. Just remember it picks up the flavor that you season it as. It's a good thing to get used to. I wouldn't want to eat it everyday, but it's something good to have your little handy duty refrigerator. Something you can go to when you haven't got any other protein to work with. Thanks for sharing. Did a great job
As someone who loves tofu i found this video hilarious. Your initial aversion turned to skepticism turned to enjoyment lol. Will def be trying your sauce recipe, stir fried tofu is so good
Tofu absorbs all of the flavors. When you make a nice bullion broth either chicken or beef, it will take on the flavor. It will absorb all of the flavors.
I am so glad you had a good experience! I was an extreme tofu hater my whole life--but had never tried it. When I finally gave it a chance, and learned the ways to cook it, I found out how versatile and delicious it can be. People just need to make sure to buy firm or above for the chicken like texture. It comes out great in the air fryer cubed with just soy sauce or sesame oil, and can be tossed in any sauce after. No need to go through the cornstarch process every time.
I’m glad you’re upfront with what you’re serving. Nothing I hate more than people trying to trick me into eating things. I do get what your husband was saying though lol. Love your content! It’s like my bff cooking foods that we wouldn’t normally try so we don’t have to!
Freezing and thawing tofu helps release the liquid but also marinate the tofu after it thaws out. It soaks up whatever flavor you add to it, so marinating can make a big difference too. Freezing it helps the texture a bit as well.
You should freeze it, thaw it out and freeze it again to get the best texture. I normally freeze and thaw mine two to three times and than I will press the liquid out and do the lite sodium soy sauce as a base and throw all my seasonings in and let it sit for an hour before cooking.
Add some scallions as part of the dish and some hot sauce. You did a great job. If you want it to get more flavor, boil it is salted water or chicken broth for like a minute then drain it. You can use a bullion cube so as not to waste food broth then drain and press.
I’m vegan a few tips for tofu. Freeze out defrost and squeeze all the liquid out, it will help with texture and flavors. I always marinate my tofu. Since you’re not vegan you can marinate in some chicken bouillon and Asian seasonings since you created an Asian dish, I like firm or extra firm.
Just started the video...I LOVE tofu!!! I have it in hot and sour soup. I made "chicken" parmesan, curry, creole and many other dishes, including subbing it for some of the mozzarella cheese in a Caprice salad! I started using it when my mother in law needed more protein but had trouble chewing and digesting meats. I also substitute potatoes, or cauliflower, or sometimes even mirliton for the meat. I find if fun.
My son and I love tofu. Especially in soup. Or with mixed vegetables. It reminds us of fried cheese . You can put many different flavors peanuts sauce with fried tofu and mixed Asian vegetables over Raman noodles 🍜 😋 👌 ❤🎉
Hi Brooke. I have tried tofu and I personally do not like it, but thank u for being adventurous enough to try it. Sending u prayers, hugs and blessings
I haven't had meat or dairy for 15 years, so tofu is a regular ingredient for me. It was fun watching you try it. Tearing it into pieces give you more surface texture to make it crispier. Also you can make feta with it.
I'm allergic to eggs and use tofu with some really good spices, shred it, fry it and add cheese plus other omelet goodies for the extra flavor. I call it my tofu scramble & love it for breakfast! Thanks for trying something new! Great job!
Oh I love the honesty of both of you. My favorite was the pray 😂 "Lord don't let this be icky " Thank you for doing this video because I have been wondering about it also.
Hello. I'm half Japanese and have been raised with tofu all my life. I prefer the silken tofu over the porous one like you bought. Tofu doesn't have any taste and has to have some kind of sauce. I always use soy sauce. It's always been a staple in our house. Love tofu.
just the cornstarch will create a thick crunch shell eggs are not needed=------ also try freezing the whole block don't drain it. then thaw it completely..ring it out like a sponge and then re-freeze and thaw and squeeze again. then rip off chunks and bread them and fry them... that tastes like chicken!!! the freezing make the texture awesome!!
I eat meat now, but was vegetarian for like 8 years. I highly recommend making "chicken nuggets" with tofu. Bread them and bake in the oven. If seasoned well they can be super tastey! I also often just make tofu and black bean tacos. It really will take on the taste of whatever you put on it. My toddler loves tofu scramble, i literally just cook it on the stove, all broken up, season with whatever. Even some chicken bullion powder.
Yay for you for trying it!! We love it! But yes, depends how ya cook it. Try grating and freezing it first. Or cubed or crumbled and frozen…thaw and cook.
I like tofu & have cooked it quite a few ways. I never really try to make it pretend to be meat, just enjoy it as the blank canvas (flavor wise) it is. My only problem with it is it makes me pretty gassy. Congratulations 🎉 on going way out of your comfort zone. I love your videos.
Tofu is soooo goooood. I put it in everything, smoothies, meat filler, meat substitute - I'm not a vegetarian or anything, I'm just not super into meat. I dunno, just never had a taste for it. But tofu is extremely versatile, if you think you could use it in something, chances are good you can. Just need to pay attention to the firmness and type. It has a flavor, but not a very strong one, so it tends to take on the flavors around it pretty easily. You can also just fry little battered blocks of it, it's so good.
Oh my goodness this was a success!! 🤗 I first tried and appreciated tofu around 2001 at a teriyaki fast food restaurant. I learned in 2024 to cook extra firm tofu by learning from the internet just like you. But I didn’t have experience with batter. You taught me the press and batter method. Massive gratitude! Oh my goodness mine was soooo good with sweet and sour sauce!!! I adore you girl! Keep the vids coming because you’ve got charm and smarts. 😊
Years ago, 40 something years ago, I visited my sister in law while she was making dinner for her family. Husband and 7 children. Very low income family at the time. She was mixing up a meatloaf. 3/4 burger to 1/4 tufo. Tufo ...way back then, was pretty cheap. The tufo mixed right in and took on the meat flavor. It was pretty good!!!
I absolutely LOVE this video!! As a vegetarian I was just chuckling and cheering you on. So proud of you for trying something different, especially something that you've always been told is nasty 😂 and I'm definitely glad you like it alright. ❤️
Brooke I have never cooked with tofu. I have tried to eat it but couldn’t get past the texture. Great job. I have never laughed so hard. Absolutely love the reaction. 😂😂😂
This looks really good! I usually do a dry version and toss it in sweet Thai chili sauce from a bottle. Next time, I'll try it with the egg and milk and your triple-dredge system - I like the texture it gives on the outside of the cubes. An old roommate of mine had a version where she would press it, cube it, then dredge it in a mixture of cornstarch, garam masala spice, and flaked coconut, then in egg, then in the first mixture again, then fried 'til crisp. To serve, she would make a simple dip of mayo and honey. Wow, it was so good. Another quick recipe: cut the tofu in thinnish squares (from the narrow end of the whole block), about a half inch thick. Blot dry. Make a simple teriyaki sauce of soy sauce, water, bit of sugar, garlic, maybe hot sauce if you like. Fry the squares in some oil, and when they are almost crispy enough, pour in the sauce, keep frying , and let the sauce thicken, caramelize, and coat the squares. Then, make a sandwich with them, adding whatever you like, such as shredded lettuce or cabbage, mayo for the bread, tomatoes.....
White slab😂😂😂😂 him and his flat-ironed beard. He’s-a hipster eating tofu Tofu is wonderful. At 52!ate it for the first time in the early 80’s my father had a reggae band. And we ate lots of vegetarian food from his band mates Once you’ve had it, you can’t go back. You will eat it again. Silken tofu makes a delicious non-dairy chocolate pudding that’s out of this world.
You might want to try freezing it before cooking as it makes it chewier and denser. When thawed it really soaks up any sauces and marinades and is even better. Sometimes I cut it into cubes before freezing it, sometimes I don't and will just slice it to fry like chicken patties. Also, silken tofu works great in desserts. Silken tofu chocolate mousse is delicious. My husband and I aren't vegans, but cooked correctly we are happy to eat tofu. Good is good!
I have been eating tofu since the 1970’s, when I was first out on my own (old hippie here). I like it a lot and even get cravings for it if I haven’t had any in a while. Pressing it is good - but not always necessary, depending on what you are using it for. Your sons like Japanese food. You might want to find some Japanese ways of preparing tofu.
You should like it cause tofu is made from soy beans!!! It will take on any flavor. Like Asian peanut chicken. I suggest you look at some asian recipes. Might try adding some veggies. Bet pineapple would be good with it.
This was funny to see Dusty’s reaction! So true about the connotation’s of tofu. If you press the water out first, then marinate it, it’s way more delicious!
I love tofu (so does my super carnivore husband) and love that you're willing to try it! I usually press it for over an hour. There are also ways to crumble it and play around with textures
I love tofu! You should do a series with different recipes. Look up what happens when you freeze tofu, thaw it, and then cook it. The texture changes, so good!
You did great! Most folks who cook with tofu for the first couple of times try to "cook" the tofu (which is unnecessary) and end up burning the outside. Yours looked fantastic and I could almost taste what you've made (and I'm drooling 😀). And bravo on Dusty for trying the tofu with an open mind! You can also add some chicken or beef bullion powder to your cornstarch dredge and sauce if you want more meat flavor tp the tofu cubes. It makes a good sweet and sour if you use beef bullion powder.
If you want a spongier firmer texture, freeze your tofu & then press it. You can also marinade it for long periods of time. I also make a chocolate cream pie with it. So many great tofu recipes! So happy you tried it! ❤
Kudos to you Brooke, even though you were unsure you tried it. And, you did alot of research before hand. Thank you for the info and demo. I'm kinda like Dusty, it would be hard for me if I knew what it was!! But I should tey it anyway if several have said it takes on the flavors of what you cook it with. ❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊
I like alot of tofu recipes.... there are a few that i am not a fan of, but after you add the spices it has its place in more dishes than not. :-) Good for you in experimenting even when you are doubtful!!! 🙂
Good on you for trying tofu. I have tried it many different ways. Even purchased it fixed from Oriental restaurant. Just don’t like it. No way. But enjoyed your video here. Loved yours and Dusty’s honesty. Barbara.
Dusty is to funny.the face before and after he tried was great! Lol love you Brooke everything you make looks great and this was no different.think I might have to try . our family has always felt and herd the same about tofu 😂😂
I'm glad that you two were brave enough to try it! If you freeze the tofu in the package and then defrost it in the refrigerator it will completely change the texture, it will taste more like meat. I like it a lot better that way. Were your boys brave enough to try it?😁❤️
If you freeze then thaw the tofu it will fry up even crispier and it’s easier to remove the water too. I tried this and it works!
AWESOME THANK YOU FOR THE TIP 🎉❤
Yes that's 👍 true.
Yes, freezing totally changes the texture and makes it chewier if you fry or bake it
i tried this method....it came out looking and feeling like a kitchen sponge. not desirable. i couldn't eat it, threw it away.
Awesome will try that
I love that you try things you aren't sure about. It's so helpful to me and others. Thank you for sharing. Blessings 🙌
I chuckled how you were handling it so gently. Could tell you were a little outside your comfort zone. But kudos to you for trying it! 🎉😂
From what I understand about tofu is whatever you put it in it takes on the taste of it
I was going to say the same thing. Tofu takes on the taste of whatever you cook it with.
That's why I think adding some chicken bullion to it would be perfect.
Tofu picks up the favors you use.
@@zombiejedimasterI was wondering the same thing!😂
I love tufu. ❤
Omg! Dusty had me dying😂He is such a good sport. I just adore your family ❤

I was vegan for three years and ate a lot of tofu. I love it! Thanks for showing some folks it’s all good when it’s fixed good!

I’m over here obsessing with your hair color! I LOVE it!!
I know! My grey looks nothing like hers. It’s such a pretty color.
Her grey is shiny!!!
Not dull as a donkey's tail, like mine! 😂🤣

It has a flavor, but not a very strong one, so it tends to take on the flavors around it pretty easily. You can also just fry little battered blocks of it, it's so good.
Thanks
Oh my goodness this was a success!! 🤗 I first tried and appreciated tofu around 2001 at a teriyaki fast food restaurant. I learned in 2024 to cook extra firm tofu by learning from the internet just like you. But I didn’t have experience with batter. You taught me the press and batter method. Massive gratitude! Oh my goodness mine was soooo good with sweet and sour sauce!!! I adore you girl! Keep the vids coming because you’ve got charm and smarts. 😊
This is the most fun I’ve had watching a cooking video. Dusty is so funny.
I love that you tried Tofu. Awesome video!
Bravo for you Brooke! I’ve never tried tofu but my vegetarian daughter eats it all the time!
Thanks, we were brave lol. 😂
So happy to see you trying tofu! I eat tofu! I don’t eat meat, except for seafood. I would be all over this! ❤ 😊
Yes I freeze, thaw and squeeze all the liquid out. I really like tofu. You prepared it perfectly. xo
Brooke I have never cooked with tofu. I have tried to eat it but couldn’t get past the texture. Great job. I have never laughed so hard. Absolutely love the reaction. 😂😂😂
Tofu is an acquired taste, but once you get used to it, it’s delicious. Kudos to you for trying something different!
Dusty's reaction is legit hilarious to me - and I say that as a tofu-hater. lol
Wow! That looked delicious. Thank you for tackling this product. 😊
White slab😂😂😂😂 him and his flat-ironed beard. He’s-a hipster eating tofu
Tofu is wonderful. At 52!ate it for the first time in the early 80’s my father had a reggae band. And we ate lots of vegetarian food from his band mates
Once you’ve had it, you can’t go back. You will eat it again. Silken tofu makes a delicious non-dairy chocolate pudding that’s out of this world.
That was a good one! I laughed for a while on that 😂
are way too cute. Glad I could give you a laugh 😂 @@SouthernFrugalMomma
You changed your heading and music. I like it either way. Thank you for sharing. I always wait to see what you are going to make! Great job. Amen
That looks delicious! Thank you for the recipe. I've made tofu lasagna and cheesecake and scrambled "eggs" and a homemade tofurkey. It's all good 😊
He said it's good!!!
You should like it cause tofu is made from soy beans!!! It will take on any flavor. Like Asian peanut chicken. I suggest you look at some asian recipes. Might try adding some veggies. Bet pineapple would be good with it.
Thank you for all the food. You test for us folks out here. I know if things got really bad. There’s a way we could eat tofu. God bless you.
I am always SO HAPPY whenever I get home from work and see you have a new post. You really make my day!
If you press it a little longer and marinade it like chicken it'll take on even more flavor! I am a tofu lover!!!
Tofu is VERY versatile! It will take on the flavour of whatever you mix it with.
This was funny to see Dusty’s reaction! So true about the connotation’s of tofu. If you press the water out first, then marinate it, it’s way more delicious!
Tofu is delicious when cooked properly. You did an awesome job!
I love tofu in hot n sour soup. Thanks for your light to this world. I look forward to your content.
This was probably one of the most fun videos! Love it
Tofu can be a bit of an acquired taste but it’s so versatile! It tends to take on the flavors you give it, so makes a great base for a lot of dishes.
I’ve never made it either but I would salt it with chicken bouillon. Love that you’re being brave for the rest of us!
I love tofu (so does my super carnivore husband) and love that you're willing to try it! I usually press it for over an hour. There are also ways to crumble it and play around with textures
LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR HAIR!
Love it to watch you ; I am learning so many new staff and affordable. Thank you for sharing ❤
Tofu is amazing and so versatile. It’s a staple in our house.
