Colorado 4x4 Rescue and Recovery - Stump Hill TJ

- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Way back in January 2019, a TJ ventured a bit too far and framed out in about 4 feet of snow. A team was assembled and the operation was ultimately called off due to the distance needed to travel, the depth of the snow, and the extreme cold setting in for that weekend (zero degree temps).
Fast forward to March, we tried again and snowshoe'd in ( • Colorado 4x4 Rescue an... ) but spring snowfall had kept the snow so deep and multi-layered that there was no way to get anything more than a snowmobile in (or go in on foot). So there was no way to get this thing turned around and out.
Well we had such a wacky spring here that it was cold clear up through the 1st day of summer. Spring runoff FINALLY wrapped up a few days ago and the USFS gave their blessing to travel beyond the locked gate all the way up to the TJ and get it out.
I was fully expecting rodents to have ate the wiring of the TJ, and we'd be dead towing it out. But alas, after a quick inspection, the owner decided to try to start it up. We had everything with us to work on the vehicle. New battery, heet, fresh gas, tools to pull plugs etc...but the ol TJ fired right up!!
If this isn't an Optima commercial I don't know what is. That battery held charge through -20 temps, sat for 7 months, and still provided about 10 volts and enough amps to start that engine!
we traveled down to the bottom and up to our staging area, and discovered a nicked brake line, so we proceeded to help get it loaded on a trailer and rolling down the mountain.
Since this wasn't an epic winch fest recovery, I video'd the entire drive up the road since we were behind the winter gate, and traveling on an admin route not open to the public.
DO NOT DRIVE PAST THE 1ST TURNAROUND. MAJOR FINES WILL BE ISSUED BY USFS.
If you want to skip the drive up and go right to being on-scene, jump to 30 minutes into the video. The drive up we were just chit chatting about wheeling, life, colorado, etc.
ENJOY! See you on the next one!
It's a 4.0L they always start. Even with 3 rods hanging out of the block
I drove mine with a missing piston skirt for a week.
You will love this story then ! I was working as a mechanic back in the late 80's and a 20 year old girl drove into the shop because she heard a funny noise. it was fall but shop doors open and we all heard it coming in ,we had a open bay and guided her right in. A rod had gone threw the oil pan block and welded to the crank . We told her the motor was junk, she asked to use the phone and called her father who told her we trying to rip her off and she drove away . 0 oil I always wonder how far she made it?
@@pkuudsk9927 depending on the engine might have made it home lol
My XJ had 3 holes in the block and still ran.barely, but it ran🤣
Bought a 94 XJ with an engine knock. 25K miles later it's still knocking and running fine.🤓
Your like the Bob Ross of recovery man, I could chill and watch these all day.
Lol!!
" not that spectacular of a video"..
I personally thought it was a great video buddy! Good job.. thanks for taking us along for the ride.. We appreciate your time and efforts to haul us with you and the team!!
I'm sure I can speak on behalf of everybody, (and like you said) I'm also very impressed that TJ fired with 10 volts after 6/7 months
Thanks for making this video. It helps those of us who can only dream of driving these trails... for now.
Being English i am a land rover fan lover but that was a beautiful part of the world you drove through .thank you.
35:40 "We needed 7 Jeeps just to give you a ride up here." You know each and every one of those 7 Jeeps enjoyed the chance to go past the legal bounds and drive somewhere they wouldn't have been able to otherwise.
Love the 4.0, wish they could bring it back.
Probably the main reason why it wasn't messed with is it was far enough back there that any one who did see it was never back again to realize it's been there that long. First time coming up to it you wouldn't know if the owner was close buy hunting or hiking.
Some nice vids and cool service but most the recoverys and trails don't seem to rough. I'd love to wheel your mts for awhile. Been wheeling the Appalachian mountains 40 yrs or so. Thanks for the ride along.
My buddy rolled his xj last winter. That 4.0l sat on its driver side for 4 1/2months. Once we got my f250 in their, towed it on its wheels. It turned over for maybe 5 seconds and fired up
I love that your organized and your packed for anything that could happen. ☺
Lisa Payne try using “you’re”... and you even edited it...WTF?!?
@@jeremysmith8990 and why do you even care lol.
I appreciate the long form video. I enjoyed watching you driving your jeep through the woods, and I don’t have to find something new to watch every 7 minutes
It was a great video Justin! I surely am happy for the ole boy that none of his stuff got tore up or stolen
enjoyed watching your video. Reminds me of when we hiked up a jeep trail near Homestake Res. many years ago on our way to Cleveland Lake. What a blast watching the jeep group running their vehicles up to the abandoned mining town across from French Creek.
I had a 99 Sahara, 4” susp 1” body, 33’s. Bumpers, rails, winch & light bar... green & tan. I loved that thing. Never left me stuck, just turned 105k on it. Coming down hill on a fire road, had some speed, bear ran out & it started to slide. Rolled it 3x down the hill rested on a tree. Broke my t11 & t12. For now I just watch vids from my wheelchair. Be safe out there. Great vids & nice rigs guys! Keep up the great work!
If you're already busted up you might as well get back out there!
Dest Droid thanks bro. Trying to stay positive & heal up a little more... but I already plan on another off road only tj.
Glad you are healing up brother! One day at a time. Get into another TJ! I miss mine like crazy.
Well Justin... you guys can say 3rd times the charm on this recovery. Glad to see another vehicle safe and back with it owner.
It started right up after 7 months...Of course... It's a TJ !!! ;) And the battery has most of the credits,It's an Optima yellow top.
Awesome video 👍. Man I love that area, I was on roads 517 and 171 two days ago. Gods country ❤️
Wow nice trails ,the Jeep was intact and started up . SWEET
What a fairy-tail story! Dude was soooooo lucky; no theft, almost no damage, and it fired right up after 7 months of sitting in the snow. Man, I'll take that karma any day!
I had a 1998 TJ in the same color(arctic blue?) what a great Jeep. It always started and got me from A-B. Plus, it was highly capable off road
Very nice experience !! Really awesome route ! Thaks for share it ! Take care ! Nice to meet you ! Love this work !
Been waiting for this video forever! can't believe how much snow was up there
What an awesome trail...and a funny colored beer....
Have family in Windsor and Ft Collins. Would love to do some back country driving next time we go out!
Oh man that sucks for the person who’s Jeep it was, great video
Yea thanks was wondering the other day if you got that Jeep. Amazing no damage really and it started right up.
Jeep 4.0L, the most reliable lump you can have under the hood. LOVED my XJ 4.0... started every time, never let me down and ran like a top.
This is a great ending to what could have been not so fun.
You guys are awesome for saving that guys rig my buddies and I all got stuck up harris this winter 3 rigs. took us 16 and 1/2 hours for 11 to go get three it's amazing when friends come together There's a video out there Tyson Conrad put one out. That's what wheelin is about👍😎
Fantastic video! And not having a winch fest was definitely a relief and I wasnt even there haha. But I'm going to go buy an Optima battery now because my battery just took a crap actually. And I'm also in disbelief that tj fired right up that's insane! Looking forward to the next one!!
Amazon is the cheepest place to buy optima that I have found
Is that a good idea? Optima batteries have went downhill for the past ~10 years.
Cant beat the straight 6 ! New jeeps just aren't the same
It's spectacular video. Thanks for uploading.
Good thing you got all the extra help. LoL they just wanted some trail time.
...and somebody wanted to try out his new trailer ;-)
beautiful country up there, been building a 3 door 70 Chevy Suburban just for weekend get away's but I do not think it would fit threw where you guys were in the trees! THANKS FOR The Video!! NICE VIEWS!!
I can't believe it started, and that his tires are still fully inflated! @36:50 and that's why he bought a 4-dr. Jeep, and a trailer! haha
Good old trusty 4.0L
Optima battery for the win!
I think you all did a very good job at getting the jeep
What a nice bunch of people
Sea foam is what you need stuff clean everything up gas put in the motor everything works out wonders
Awesome!!! Been waiting for this one!!! Can’t believe it still ran!!!
Good stuff. I love Jeepin. My old FJ40 is a blast as well. The important thing is to get out there! Good job boys.
Nice drive enjoyed the conversation...
Great video! good ol trusty 4.0! Also, maybe next time you take the trailer up, and its a tight turn around, just disconnect the trailer, flip it around in its current spot since its so light, then go up and turn jeep around then come back and hook back up. Would prevent you from getting into a bind in a tight spot with a trailer.
thought about that but I also looked at sat images and knew I was ok this time.
@@JustinKingOffroad Oh for sure, but them moredoor jeeps are long lol
It was a fairly simple recovery but we still appreciate you taking us along. Beautiful scenery. You said your trailer worked great but I don't suppose anyone behind you got any video of it being pulled going through the trees?
Not this trip. But I'll be taking it again and maybe a friend can do that for me.
Chains are great for digging through snow but sometimes you just need to air down and get on top of the snow. I dont know. I still think I could have got that out when you walked in last winter. I built my jeep Cherokee just for playing in the snow. I have been in 12 feet of snow and stayed on top when heavier rigs sank to the ground. Spent 12 hours shoving ramps to get them out and on top of the snow.
ya fuck chains, they are for speed. I WASNT
THERE, but ive been stuck aired down and drove out of the deep shit..
when he got stuck did he end up walking back or did he have service to call someone? looks like quite the walk in that much snow
He said they had to stay overnight and then hiked all the way back.
What Make model year trim is the orange jeep with the hood vents?
18 JLUR Rubicon.
Wow look at all the downed trees.. Piss poor forestry management. This is tons of fuel during forest fires. Great recovery!!
If you want to see what happens, skip 32 minutes in and then they get to the TJ
Wow. The forest is dead and dying. I loved in Colorado when I was a kid, and the forest was way healthier.
I’d say the owner of the Jeep is very lucky in the way it turned out....
GREAT VIDEO GUYS ! 🍻
ALSO ....8:35 HULK HOGAN/PAUL TUTTEL SENIOR HAS HAS ENTERED THE GAME 😎
Got to love optima batteries
Way to go 4.0!!!
Let me know where I can apply for the $30 hr job.
Yea same. And that’s if you don’t know shit. I know some shit so I’m thinking I want like 45-50 to start.
It’s not impossible certainly but around my area anyway it’s going to be close to it unless you want to travel and rarely see your family.
Great video
Just curious, around 16:00, the dead trees, is that fire or bug damage? I could see a wild fire happening real easy there.
Bug damage, and that area is on fire right now. Look at Cameron Peak fire Colorado.
To the guys defense there is no signs or anything saying obvious u can or cant keep going. Obviously "someone" was up there cutting trees and making paths its super easy to see that and follow it we found the jeep.
yep this is an "admin route" meaning forest mitigation contractors etc use it. and usually when signs are put up, people rip them down anyway.
Specs on TJ? Looks like highline front fenders, and 35s, but lift specs?
I don't know that for sure but it was a nice setup. 5 link rear etc.
Sitting 7 months and you didn’t change the oils first? I would of put some fresh oil in and made sure it didn’t get water or nothing up in it but what do Ik
Cool video
Thanks for sharing this trip, I’m curious about your camera and how you mount it. It does not seem to move with the vehicle exactly there seems to be some separation in the movement from the vehicle to the camera and I’m just trying to understand why that is. Thanks
So is your camera mounted to a gimbal maybe 🤔
And what kind of camera do you shoot
it's actually a gopro hero 5 mounted to the windshield, they have fantastic image stabilization built into them.
Justin King ahh cool thanks for the tip because it seem to be always correcting and I couldn’t figure out how and why it was doing that
I have an optima red top in my pickup, it sat for weeks at a time all winter (-30 Celsius with windchill) then for a month at a time twice with a short drive in between, it never missed a beat, definitely glad I spent nearly 400$ on it lol
Too bad they stopped making the 4.0L
truly gods country
Dang Justin, I wish I had known ya when I was up in FOCO. You could have showed me some trails. Next time we come to Co, I'm getting in touch with you sir.
Interesting, tell me does the owner have to pay any fees for your recovery assistance?
there is no charge for our service. however it's not uncommon to see a donation come in.
What size tire and lift on the blue TJ??
What’s your call sign? Saw the Kenwood TM-D710GA. I have the TM-V71A.
looks like big
foot was busy there
Nice vid! What kind of hitch are you using? Regular ball or something like the Lock n' Roll? Is the trailer independent suspension? I havent heard any noises in your cab from the trailer bouncing.
It's the pintle it came with. I'm seriously considering leaving it on there too keep it original. A good pintle (not a ball combo) doesn't let it move around too much.
Ove been their but its been 35 years its changed
Well I enjoyed that very much. Thank you.
Why are there so many dead trees and trees already down?
rocky mountain pine beetle pandemic, and tree huggers not allowing controlled forest thinning.
What map software are you using on your iPad on the dash? Looks like it would be a great feature to add.
gaia gps with some of the premium overlays. i'm still on my 1 year trial but i will be buying it when it comes due.
Why is it closed? Dead wood? Or just locking it up?
stump hill is just a winter challenge only, but where this vehicle ended up is well beyond the legal end anyway. like 1 mile past.
@@JustinKingOffroad never heard of a trail only open in the winter, many times the opposite. Seems very odd
@@myauctionaddictionestatesa7451 indeed, we have some weird stuff here in noco
But that is property OWNED BY THE PEOPLE and the government is only there to maintain it. Unfortunately the government has gone off the rails and think it is theirs regardless of TRUE owners.
What type of camera mount do you use in the Jeep? Great video, you guy's are good.....
it's just a gopro hero 5 on a sticky mount to the windshield. it does surprisingly well.
Thanks for the up date. Loved the video. BTW, what trailer is that? Looks like my TC 3 trailer but mine has the tailgate.
It's a legit m416 trailer. Hard to find. Not many on the roads anymore.
@@JustinKingOffroad I must laugh about the M 416 trailer. Not many on the road anymore. Nothing on you. I was thinking it was a M 100. Even more rare. My TC 3 trailer dates back to about 46 to 48. I do not know because the title reads home made. I do know this age range due to the frame style. The V notches cut into the frame.
While I love the hitch you have, please be careful. The hitch allows more movement up, down and sideways, it also allows the trailer to roll more easily. I hope not to see you roll that trailer like I have seen on other YT videos.
To ramble on even more. After making my comment I saw your video on repacking the bearings. I saw that you had the parking brake. I wish mine still had had that. The drums and workings have long since been removed. I must not complain to much. The price was right. FREE!!!
Just to let you know, jeeps are like Timex they keep on ticking, and jeeps are made Ford tuff.
Lol. They never stop takeing your money either
What kind of camera mount are you using on your dash? Looks like a self leveling one? Thanks!
it's just a gopro hero 5 with the built in image stabilization.
good job. loved watching the ride up. what app are you using on the ipad for navigation?
Gaia gps, works awesome!
what happened to the little girl? is she ok?
Why did it sit??
6 foot of snow kept us out. Then too much runoff and the usfs said no.
In alabama it would have been striped and vandelized the next day. Lol.
we did get pretty lucky on this one since it was so far remote on a not legal road.
Action starts at 31min
how did you guys have to combo for the forest service gate?
It's a key, usfs met up with us and gave it to us for the day
@@JustinKingOffroad Thanks for the reply. That is very cool of them. I guess it is in their interest that you guys got the jeep asap. Just subscribed . Cheers!
@@jonnyd8399 they wanted that out of there sooner, but the snow was four and five foot deep headed up there and it was nearly impossible. and then the spring runoff began and they didn't want anybody up there so we had to wait clear into the summer.
35:17 That fairlead has seen better days
a farmers kids were playing in a grain buggy she was 4, fell in and the corn got her 3 feet tall child in an 8 feet deep buggy
Probably the higher in elevation he got the deeper the snow! Then he got stuck!
Yellow shirt looked like old man Teutel from Orange County Chopper's
What year is that TJ?
What kind of trailer are you pulling ?
i brought my m416 along for this one.
Why was it up there in the first place
Stump Hill is a winter challenge. But they went too far past the legal end.
Please install a gopro on trucks .
Nice to see different angles .
Well anyways I'm still addicted either way.😁
Did you have the key to that gate?
USFS met us, gave us the key, and we returned it once done.
To be fair it looked like a trail past the turnaround. The USFS needs better signage......
100% agree
Looks like Bigfoot had a fit in this forest, i can see why they would want you to stay out of certain areas. I see a lot of those trees up out of the ground with there roots still attached, that is no place to be when it gets dark !!!
what app are you using on your tablet for gps?
gaia gps with some overlays. works awesome.
@@JustinKingOffroad thanks man im hoping in a year or so to get a jeep not sure if I want trade my truck in on a wrangler rubicon or get like an xj Cherokee to build on an mess with some climbing all them trials running 4hi and lo spending time out does it burn more gas or does it do okay
Why would a squirrel destroy a jeep?
It's the coating on the electrical wires
