    I've got one VERY IMPORTANT reason for using Yoast and its this: the message that comes up when a page is shared via fb messenger or WhatsApp etc.
    When you don't fill in the little meta description, the "share" pulls the first words from the page. So if you have a customer quick nav under the heading, then you get
    About me | [Link] | [Link] [...first few lines of the body of the post...]
    And this looks A MESS
    When you use the description, the message grabs the description content and looks nice and tidy. If you've got some Facebook communities (like my client has) where she shares her pages and posts often in group chat etc, then this is VERY important to have these messages grabbing nice and tidy information.
    So this is a BIG overlook in this video. I'll be happy if someone can point me in a direction for a small tidy plugin that can do this instead of Yoast; really wanting to cut down on the plugins I'm using

    Sorry gang, gotta disagree on letting WP decide meta titles and google for descriptions. If you're a regular user, this is ok to do. But if you're going the extra mile - or SEO/organic traffic is your primary source of income, optimizing titles and descriptions go a long way. Tweaking your titles is a fantastic way to create engaging titles with character limits in mind, then you can use the page title to be more descriptive. As for descriptions, use Search Console and SERPs to optimize these; my descriptions rarely get rewritten outside of changes for location-based searches.

  • @coreyapotter
    @coreyapotter 4 года назад +14

    Man, I couldn't disagree more with your conclusion on noindexing, even noindexing category pages. I've seen cases time and time again where Google would start ranking a category page instead of a more relevant post for a topic. The two would compete, and neither would rank well. Then after noindexing the category archive, the right post would start ranking well again. I've probably seen that exact scenario at least a dozen times in the past year.
    I've also worked on at least 50 sites where we would do an audit and realize that we needed to clean up what was in the index. Noindexing categories/tags, redirecting image attachment pages, removing random post types and their taxonomies from the index, etc. We usually also go through regular blog content and noindex or delete content that is underperforming. I can't think of a single case where this practice has not improved the site's health and ranking across the board. I really believe that Google looks at all of the indexed pages from a domain and then calculates some kind of "quality" score.
    If people are following the green lights in Yoast to the point where it hurts them, they don't have to uninstall Yoast. You can easily turn off the SEO analysis and Readability analysis.
    You say you are optimistic about Rank Math, but I feel exactly the opposite. Its a scammy plugin made by a company with a history of being blacklisted from different hosts and security plugins. I've had so many clients who have had MAJOR problems from bugs in Rank Math, and I just don't trust the software or the company. Its funny that you're basically preaching "these guys have too many features... you don't need all of that..." and then saying you're optimistic about Rank Math, when their entire USP has always been "we have the most features for free."
    I also think you guys are putting way too much value in schema for things like authorship/organization. I agree for sure about recipes, and possibly for news (I think you'd be better off to have no Schema with AMP than visa versa).
    I'm glad you guys are trying to include all of the things you find important for SEO. However, when it comes to theme development, I wish you were not baking these things into Acabado. These features clearly fall under what should be included in a plugin. I'd love to see you separate out these features into a companion plugin that makes the features easy to turn on or off. But I do understand why you would want to bake it in and make it easier for people to just use the default settings. I just know I wouldn't use that theme (but then again, I'm not your target audience with that theme lol).
    Oh, did you guys see that Sitemaps are going to be baked into WordPress core soon?

    • @DonnaWhite94
      @DonnaWhite94 4 года назад +1

      Great points. I saw that about sitemaps being baked into wordpress core a while back. My question to you is: do you think they will have an option for each post or page to no index? I hope so. Thanks.

    Wordpress doesn’t even have self-referencing canonical meta tags without an SEO plugin..
    You forgot handling of taxonomies and pagination.
    Also, schema.. while somewhat important.. isn’t the game changer you’re making it out to be. Google gets this information by building a knowledge graph.. not just taking schema and throwing it in the SERP.

    • @thibaultpostel8826
      @thibaultpostel8826 4 года назад +2

      So what would be the game-changer according to you? Because actually it seems that regardless what you are doing in terms of SEO best practices for on-page and off-page, some fixes work all the time but don't really help to sky rock your main pages on the SERP. My point of view on this is to really boost the metrics such as page-views, dwell-time (unless it's conversion page), bounce rate, etc. which to me send signals to Google telling "this website is dope". Technical fixes ok, link-building a big plus if we have time for that, but I think a good user experience combined with all of that is the key. What do you think?

  • @jollyjames30
    @jollyjames30 4 года назад

    One other important thing that should be noted is that the bulk of sites that rank at the very top of Google for their targeted keywords are the sites which have the exact target keyword in their URL. That's one aspect of SEO that has never changed all throughout these years. And that is a massive ranking factor in itself. So you don't really need any SEO plugin, especially since WordPress helps structure your blog post. But you should know that having your target keywords in your domain, title, and throughout your copy is very helpful if you want to rank on the first page of Google. And just as importantly, your post needs to be lengthy and informative. Big blog posts of several thousand words helps a lot. You don't need to worry about hitting every green checkmark on Yoast or any other SEO plugin just as long as you cover the very essentials.

The reason for this is that I actually started this site with a friend who later ditched the project and at the moment I am carrying it. And also it helps me promoting it in Quora as people will not think that I am promoting my own site and I have a plan to make a company around it later. I would probably pay for a super simple liteweight SEO plugin that was trustworthy and did the absolute minimum required to help rank. I think the point here really is that you should never let a tool do your thinking for you. I learned SEO before these kinds of tools existed, so I actually understand what matters and what doesn't. Too many people take these plugins or "online SEO audit" tools and assume their word is God. First, you need to understand what's important, and then use the tools to achieve that, instead of letting the tools tell you how to think.

    Where does using Meta Descriptions for a Call To Action come into play when deciding to use these types of plugins or not? Do you know of any studies that have shown the benefit of using them when your focus is to write MDs that convert?

    Custom Author Page: could you do this by creating a page with the top half being about the author and the bottom half as posts. Then put a 301 redirect from the standard author page to the custom created one. Just a though.

    the only were you need a tool is to have different titles in the site and in the google result. today i just changed a products title to some google friendly search intent way, but when someone ordered it, the awkward title came on the bill :P

    Hi Guys, thanks for doing this much appreciated. Could I ask if you could do a detailed specific vid on each of those "schema" points? its a bit confusing for me at the moment when googling these. Thanks.

    RankMath for life

      I try it following the good review in the pool... Is nowhere close to Yoast SEO, especially for the Readability and spot the keyword variations in french.
      But it really have some good option... Maybe need some maturity

    • @iamjoshkoop
      @iamjoshkoop 4 года назад +1

      steel971 I agree with avoiding scoring though and readability as those are really junk metrics. It doesn’t need to have any ratio of keywords, especially with long tailed keywords that just looks forced.

    • @steel971
      @steel971 4 года назад

      @@iamjoshkoop I'm agree to disagree :-) Readability score is REALLY useful as they improve the quality of the article. For me the 3 metrics I can miss are : more than 20 words phrase, passive forme and transition word... BTW is not really a SEO thing but I never found a plugin that does only readability.

    I had a plugin that kept complaining I was using a _passive voice_ but wouldn't help on how to not use it so I deleted the plugin. Problem solved.
    I've been using Rank Math but my small traffic has dropped lately so that's getting deleted soon.
    WordPress is supposed to be for the layman to blog without knowing technical stuff so we should be able to just blog away and get found.

    RankMath is the best one, and I'm enjoying to use it.
    I know that some of its features are unnecessary, like the high keyword density goal, but it's doing fine to help me in my workflow. However, I'm just thinking how do they'll monetize it and when? Because there ain't no such thing as a free lunch hahaha

    Last year Yoast simply deleted everything I had done (metatitles, descriptions) on my site. Everything was a blank page. When I tried to reach out to them to know what had happened... "Oh, I'm sorry, you are a free user, no support for you". Nasty. Yoast never again.

    Ricky, the seo ju ju stuff you were talking about is really (dacade) old seo that does not work any more at all. Google sees through that non-esense and it will hurt a person's ranking.
