Hyundai Ioniq hybrid review: carbyr.uk/2fC3BoG
Watch our latest video: bit.ly/carbuyer...
The Hyundai Ioniq is a landmark car, as it's the first to be offered in hybrid, all-electric and plug-in hybrid versions. It's the hybrid - the likely best-seller we're driving here. The Ioniq is all-new from the ground up, and as a very credible rival for the Toyota Prius. It's smartly styled, with a conventional interior and is suitably practical. It's not hugely entertaining to drive, but running costs are low.

But that Hyundai is looking 10x better then Toyota Prius :D
When you're in LA, there is nothing distinct about driving a Prius. lol.
Jay Burgos Louisiana people drive trucks, not Prius!
HappyListener50 WHY ARE YOU HERE TOO do you look for videos to hate on
I've driven this car and I can asure you the gearbox is buttery smooth with very seamless gear changes so cant understand his statements.
Cris Movistar Toyota paid him off.
I totally agree. I made a test drive after seeing this review and didn't have high hopes for this car. Guess what? It blew me away! This Ioniq is fantastic; especially in it's price class. The gearbox is véry smooth indeed and the noise when accelerating (which it does more than adequate) is perfectly acceptable ... I might even go as far as call it nice! ... for a hybrid. Also what made me happy was the infotainment system. It's smooth, fast and easy to use. The Ioniq Hybrid Premium in Iron Gray color will be my car for the next four years and I couldn't have made a better choice in this price range.
I'll admit you have to adapt to the DCT, specially from a dead stop. You have to control the accelerator to make the clutch "slips" otherwise it may be clunky. But once you get use to it, it's a charm!!
The electric motor helps in that position. I was a bit against using DCTs on Hybrids because the clutch is a piece that wears out and you don't have control on it, But I read that going from a stop the electric motor will push first then the fossil will come in to help. Of course if you have juice in your Batteries
franctoma, well Toyota haven't paid me yet, but then I love my ioniq!
Definitely looks better than the Prius though!
what is it about the boot having a lip and drop. grow some muscles and get over it.
Agreed and it can actually be practical to have some lip to help keep the luggage firmly in place and not sliding out of the boot so easily.
Well, apart from obvious aerodynamics reason, it also has another advantage.
I was able to fit all four 17 inch winter tires into the boot, and the gate closed without a fuss. No need to fold down rear seats. ;)
Also, my wife recently told me that lip is nice on highways - cars in a certain distance behind you no longer blind you, lol.
are you a buff daddy?
Most European reviewers complain about it. I don't see the issue really.
I like the design better than the Prius. Hybrids don't need to be ugly. It doesn't alter its function to have good looks
Why are you always concerned about a load lip in the boot? id much rather have a deeper boot than a higher boot floor, surely?!
And also, having a step when back seats are folded is the norm for this class, it shouldn't be treated as a negative like it always is, but if they fold completely flat it should be a bonus.
Toyota Preyus. 😂

Excellent review, Carbuyer crew! I'm picking my Ioniq on Thursday and I agree with you on all its flaws. Despite them, I still chose Ioniq over Auris hybrid or Prius. It's simply bigger than the former, while cheaper than the latter. After test-driving Auris and Ioniq, I've found Hyundai more engaging to drive, and the responsiveness reminded me of my wife's CX-3, which I think handles fantastically. My wife said Ioniq was better to drive than the CX-3, so there's that too.
All in all, I can live with most of its flaws and you are absolutely right in saying in the end, it will all go down to personal preference.
Keep up the good, spot-on work!
PS: Found your channel looking for Kodiaq's reviews. Good job on that, too :)
EDIT: Forgot to add: Ioniq produces 72g of CO2 per 100km, yes, but only on 15 inch alloys with those low-resistance tires. 17 inch produces more like 92g. Just something that popped out from the brochure I got. Cheers.
Much better looking car than a prius
I'm 6.2 I always drive my car from back sit and I scratch plastics in my car at least 3x a day.
I love the new color grading, it looks like a subtle VSCOcam preset was applied.
I just reviewed this car. He didn't rest his head on the head rest. I'm 5 foot 11, and i have to lodge my head firmly on the rooflining to rest on the headrest.
I hate when people will moan that this is conventional, but then will praise the golf GTE for being conventional.
Looks like a 80's car show with new cars..
very cool. I'm convinced. now I just have to be able to afford it.
There is lot of effort and hardwork behind every video they upload. When you criticise people please keep in mind. I think he convied the message nicely. Of course he is not like Mat Watson but please give him your feedback on how he can improve
Hondas He does not need to 'improve' to become Mat Watson. They are just different people with different styles. This is true of all car reviewers. Have a look at all of them. I really don't see why this guy has to be continually criticised - and yes, I know you were being positive.
I bought a 2017 Ioniq and have driven about 800 miles now and I'm getting around 63-64 MPG! (sports mode for acceleration and eco all other times) I love it except I have had 2 minor small plastic parts slightly break. the seat "lifter" handle is loose and the driver's side door handle trim is starting to fall off. but I'm covered with a 125,000 bumper to bumper warranty so not too worried.
Thumb up for information about dual clutch. Very helpful.
Unfortunately he is so wrong...
I like the car and don't mind James' reviews but he always starts sentences off with the word NOW. It gets annoying after a bit. Could someone stop him doing it.
Love to see you do a review of the all electric version Ioniq
If you want to see a review of the electric version, I have done one on my RUclips channel.
Why is the steering wheel so damn huge?
DCT box over the CVT anyday
Prius does have a 😱-effect not a wow effect
it's the most hideous design you can currently get
The Ioniq is really a nice car that doesn't cry for attention but got some decent style
And that's why I bought one. It also drives far better than a Prius - at east on the 15" wheels. Not impressed with the ride quality of the 17" rims. And they're pig-ugly too.
does the lights need to change a lot? because its a massive task to get done in this car.
James, since people seem interested in alternative energy cars, could you maybe do a review on some ethanol (alcohol) powered cars? Ive read that in Brazil 90% of cars drive on ethanol, and all major manufacturers make them. I find them interesting because im a farmer and i could grow my own fuel basically.
Couldn't help but be distracted by the leaf on the grille at 4:10
I think journalists just do not have any arguments to hate korean cars, so they just say: it's not fun to drive. In this review i didn't detected any mention of dual clutch system that this car offers, while Prius doesn't. And in review of new Rio thera are the same metions: not fun to drive. Like a Fiesta is a bomb of fun.
So with 2 test drive's I've decided to buy the Hyundai IoniQ as my new car for 2018. I know I've made the right choice.
An informative review. Thanks. 👍
wouldn't say "very well made". The fuel tank cap for example is just one part. "Very well priced" is true.
Ioniq looks very good "live", but not that awesome in videos and pictures for some reason.
1:00 Spike, the MINI dog.
this guy is Quentin Wilson Jr.
also...clearly doesn't understand what a mild hybrid is supposed to do. it's not supposed to run around in ev mode. the motor is meant to supplement the ICE in times of acceleration and higher load to ease the fuel consumption penalty those tasks entail.
What is more efficient, Ioniq or Prius?
How many times do you carry luggage for the boot lip to be an issue?
Honda tried with the similar looking insight hatchback and give up after 3 - 4 years
Please talk in metric terms James. :-)
Shh. Just do the maths in your head, like any metric-educated person. Leave imperial people with their primitive measurement system alone, they can't do the same maths :D
JK
VolvoCars 7
This bloke is talking a load of bulls**t I own one and it great better than my previous car an Diesel estate
can you drive it in electric mode only?
Dear Sir, may I know the name or location of this place where you shoot this video. please
Presumably the design brief was 'Make it look smart and inoffensive, like a smaller Ford Mondeo... but just remember to make an absolute pig's ear of the back end.'
Where I live the standard hybrid Ioniq is half the price of a Golf GTi. Making it the equivalent of around £12k-13k
Crazy how minimum price of this now at decent mileage is at £15k!
It's much better looking than the 2017 Prius, hate the look of the new model with passion
I think some dense English fog was affecting Ioniq's performance. One needs to oil the car properly to drive through Britain.
what were the economy figures?
Looks cool
nice watch man
He said "particularly" 3 times in 3 sentences, that's just annoying. and why does he pronounce Prius differently throughout the Video?
IN WHICH TRIM CAN U GET THE ELECTRIC TE GATE IN
Who places a 1.5l bottle in the door bin?
Why all this kind of cars have this hideous rear end?
aerodynamics.......
Less drag, less wind noise and better mileage. Plus atleast it has a SPOILER! Sporty eh? well almost :)
Toyota Prey-us?
its good but i still trust toyota
Please test the electriv version!
I have a review of the electric version on my RUclips channel if you would like to see it.
hes trying to be matt watson
he's pretty good, but Mat is in a totally different leuge
He is good but hes no matt
ciw02 plays I think Matt & this gentleman have very different review styles and it's not fair to keep comparing them. I like them both but do find Matt quite silly and scripted in some reviews. This gentleman is still a very good car reviewer.
Where's Ginny???
Im not saying hes bad but in this video i find hes trying to be
Matt
what an eyesore. Yeesh. The new i30 looks so good. How'd they screw this up.
You're paid!
Of course he's paid! Who would work for free? Do you work for free? Can I hire you?
OMG it's Quentin Wilson's secret child. Zzzzzzzz. An 80 year old in a 30 year old's body.
Vic Sandhu hahah spot on. this guy does boring reviews
He must be someone important's son, they can't have interviewed him. Unless Deal or No Deal is coming back? Lol
Vic Sandhu Haha thanks for your comment Vic. Very original
my next car it should be hybrid
I lease this car. It's good, it's an Audi A3 deep down designed by the Audi designer who moved to Hyundai. But the foot operated parking brake is rubbish, it also switches of the front LEDs when used.. There are Led lights that light up the back of the front door handles only, but not the back door handles why? For the money it's good, for more cash the mercedes A / CLA class is much much better...
wait, Hayondai?
What does “very well priced” mean ?? How much does it cost?!
7 million Zimbabwean Dollars
Interestingly, you come to a different conclusion than 95% of other car experts reviewing the Ioniq hybrid. Of course, you could be correct but I got the impression you are a Toyota fanboy. Everything you criticise about the Ioniq, like the DCT or the handling, is explicitly praised by the vast majority of other experts...
That's a weird looking Mazda3
The strong point in the Ioniq range is the full electric version. That is the Ioniq that truly impresses.
Ironiq looks okay
I often see hyundai car espcially Avega broken down in the street.
Rear headroom does not look "absolutely fine": his head touches the roof and the head restraint serves no purpose. Like most swooping coupé style saloons (Insignia et al), it's a compromise between styling and practicality and styling wins.
3 three is the only number of Ionic they'll ever sell
Ignorance is bliss, eh?
very noisy he says.... can only hear the road surface. prk
LOL you get a WOW factor from Prius! Was that a joke? There is zero reason to get excited in prius. Did not like it at all. Hyundai is much nicer actually. You want a waoo factor? Get a German car. Sadly there is nothing that is as good as Ioniq or this (should be pretty much the same).
Eh? Don’t understand your banter, old son
once for all its not HAJUNDAI its HJUNDAI
lalos That's how it's pronounced in the UK. Get over it.
It's actually pronounce Hyun-Day in Korea. But to each country its own pronunciation...
MrTrull1 which is incorrect.
gngan Yeah, but so what? Most people in the UK probably say Citroen, Volkswagen, Ibiza and many more wrong. Just as Americans say 'Jagwarr' for Jaguar, not to mention pronounce pasta ''parsta' and latte 'lartay'. If you don't like British pronunciation, don't watch a British channel.
so what? germans calls bmw bee-em-vee, and yet we still call it bee-em-doubleyou
As someone who is 6'2"/188cm, I'm sick to death of this "4-door coupe" styling and the assumption that nobody tall ever needs to sit in the rear seat of a car. If I can't fit comfortably in the back seat, I'm not buying the car.
There is a myriad of reasons, but here's a scenario for you: long trip, multiple drivers. I want to be able to snooze in the back seat while someone else drives and another passenger keeps them awake.
Sometimes I like to be a passenger in my own car just so I can relax and pay more attention to the scenery.
Mark Haury ... I hear ya guy. I'm avg hgt 5'10" so its not an issue. The Nissan Versa has great over all head room front and rear. Also Honda Fit, but the Fit seems a bit narrow in my opinion.
100% electric is best
Yeah sorry to be the prune face here, but there's just no imagination in it's design. At least the Prius update has curves and angles that work to it aesthetic advantage. This is just a bubble on wheels.
How is the steering actually. You said it's "light", but that's a bad thing.
On a bicycle, you don't need to think about how to steer. You look at where you wanna go, and you automatically steer correctly.
This only works because there is feedback. You _feel_ how far to steer. With "light" steering, you have to _guess_ how far to steer. What I want in a car is feedback.
Sadly, I haven't yet seen an ev that understands this, which is why evs are not the future for me personally right now. I hope car manufacturers understand this in the future.
nice thing about the ioniq is you get a SPACE SAVER WHEEL as standard ???? that's a NEGATIVE, NOT a positive, why`s it nice ???????
t5jerry Many cars come with no spare wheel at all. I have a Toyota with just a can to fill a flat tyre with foam. Would much rather have an actual wheel.
MrTrull1 yes but nowadays you'd usually call assistance and don't change the wheel yourself in the middle of the road, no?
BokiXI Ha! I would be too embarrassed to call assistance just for a flat tyre! And no, I wouldn't change it in the middle of the road, I would have steered over to the side.
MrTrull1 cmon man you get 5yrs of road assistance for free - why get dirty, embarrassing or not?!
BokiXI Because I don't want to turn into a useless blob of fat on the floor! And I don't even have the patience to wait for a bus.
The Prius does NOT have a CVT...... It acts like one, though...
Danny Schuttevaer It does.
Matt Russell It acts the same in terms of revving but HSD works differently.
Danny Schuttevaer
It's a CVT - every review on the net AND Toyota's own website confirms.
My point is purely that it's a planetary System, no belt. So they should not call it a cvt.
But you are right, they do call it a cvt. Point taken.
fell asleep at the beginning of this video ..
Roi Levy Woke up by the end, then?
Short attention span? :D
This guy gives out misinformation. Ioniq gets better gas mileage than Prius.
Confirmed here: 1,800 mile ave mpg 54.3 mpg on Prius, 56.5 Ioniq. Imperial. Difference is the Prius had to be driven with a substantial modification to car driving style to deal with CVT-style power response. Ioniq with DCT doesn't.
Oh, and hybrid owners... have you discovered the `other` sport mode yet?
+Simon Evans - what "other" sport mode do you mean? :)
There's a second kick down mode - After you reach the limit of `normal` accelerator travel, press through the resistance and the car acts as if in Sport mode, regardless of gear selector setting. This appears to be an undocumented feature.
Simon Evans- That's very interesting comparison. Was this on the new 4th gen Prius? Also what were the average speed when on the highway and was this comparison done by the same drivers?
where is a nice bear grills looked guy?
Search youtube for Carwow he's been there for a while now
Ha-yoon-dai xD
the prius is 50% more expensive to buy where I live...!
All I heard was Toyota Prius
WHATS A BOOT!?
Decided to skip this video since he can't pronounce Hyundai correctly. What can I expect more from him.
Korean cars will be a lot cheaper in every driving year, Kia and Hyundai 2013 cars are the cheapest 2013 cars.
Toyota Lexus is best..
It's literally just a Toyota Prius!
Except prettier, cheaper and nicer to drive.
Steve Nugent hey stevie, blonde haired beauty here, can't believe I just found your random comment here, what are the chances? Just about to buy this car 😊
really ....... Toyota Prius............ Come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don't know what you are talking about. First of all, don't mention the Golf Gte, which is a EV. Secondly, there are tests out there, I talk about people who know how to drive hybrids, who get up to 125 km/h on electric motor only whit this car. Six speed dual clutch similar to ecvt (not cvt, sir!)? Got the impression you are a tiny bit biased, gentlemen... Insert coin and try again!
3:25 Prius wow factor? More like... "trying too hard, vomit factor"
you dirtied the car. Think initial d tofu test.
And the Prius wins again
tries to be hybrid and there is extraweight(sparewheel) XD
unsubscribing because I don't like the presenter. take that however you want it. at least you know why. cheers.
Ray Britton Sorry to see you go Ray. Thanks, James
Ray Britton bye
Ray Britton see you in carwow
lol already there
I agree..
Bag o nails
Korean Audi
Is that a compliment, or an insult?
Both.
What a whiney sap of a presenter. It's so noiiisy. The boot has a drop. My goodness.
it's pronouced "Hyun deh" with the "Hyun" rhyming with the back end of "onion" and "deh" rhyming with the "e" sound in "debt."
Apparently its pronounced differently all over the world.
So stop trying to teach everyone to say it the way you do.
But its actually pronounced HUNday. Like Sunday. End of discussion!
It's Korean pronunciation and I'm Korean. End of discussion.
