I got this car for my wife, we drove to Switzerland from London on one tank of fuel, and on motor ways it has auto steer and braking which was amazing and a standard option. So was apple car play and tons of extra features which would of cost me a bundle in any German car. I absolutely love this car, and give it full thumbs up
Beboos American Deli & Gelato I filled up in London were I live, drove to Brussels, then Luxembourg then Germany then Switzerland over 3 days and cost me approximately £50 in petrol. Same journey back via France to my house was about £45 I can’t remember the toll charges in France and road tax in Switzerland which was not much. What was amazing is this car drove it self on the motorways which made driving a breeze, only problem was when it lost track of road line it just turns off no warning!! So you have to keep an eye out.
Having lived with one of these for 12 months, I can attest to it being a fantastic vehicle. The heated seats and steering wheel as standard is a massive bonus in the winter. The climate control uses the hybrid battery rather than the engine so it gets warm very quickly. The reason why the Hyundai badge is plastic at the front is that the radar for the cruise sits behind it. Mat seemed to overlook one of the best features of this car - it's semi-autonomous driving mode is awesome. On the motorway you can switch on lane keep assist and speed adaptive cruise and the car literally drives and steers itself. You can even choose how close you want to get to the car in front with a button. Granted it tells you off for taking your hands off the wheel, but I have driven from Yorkshire to the south coast via motorways without actually needing to do much at all apart from control at junctions :) As a long distance tourer this really is awesome. Economical, easy to drive, loads of toys, lovely digital dashboard, decent sat nav and comfy seats. I actually don't know how they do it for the money. Downsides - the engine is torquey, especially the electric engine, but the tyres aren't up to the job as they're eco ones. They wheelspin really easily so you have to be careful when pulling away quickly. The rear windscreen wiper missing is a PITA (although I use RainX on it to try and improvise), there's a noticeable echo when you use Apple Carplay to make phone calls for the person at the other end of the phone (it's improved since the firmware update recently, but it's still there - so you have to unplug from Carplay and use Bluetooth to make phone calls), because it's a hybrid you can't tow anything or put a roof rack or roof box on it - it's towing and roof load figures are 0 - which is a pain if you want to take 4 bikes anywhere. I have managed to get two in the boot but needed to put the back seats down. If I need to use the roof box I have to use my Skoda. Lastly - make sure your Hyundai dealer puts the service details into the car. Ours was so new Hyundai hadn't worked out the service interval so we didn't get the service details programmed in - so we overshot the first service. But all sorted now.
Hey please could I ask, how do you drive on just electric? Because it keeps using the petrol and I just want to use electric and how many miles can you get from just electric power?

i still like the Golf GTE inside-out but if boot-space or the cabin room is still not enough in Golf worry not ! GTE version is also another option available for the bigger class and in the Passat GTE line can be choose between sedan and the wagon version and both are also equipped with a bit bigger battery pack and greater electric motors, so those are a bit more punchy and can travel a longer distance between charging points in full ev-mode.. but that is in case the Golf GTE is not enough.. in my case i would still get the Golf, for it's size is suffice for anything in my case, i tested it already at my local dealer-shop (and i kinda like the Golf dash better than Passat which also is a bit more pricey because available Passat GTE models in my area starts above 42.500 euros in my area..) But for the moment i also wait this year to see the Jaguar i-pace, that would be nicer but the price is the main concern and no problem if is not bigger than a Golf GTE then i would choose that instead of Golf GTE otherwise i will purchase the Golf GTE and that is the main reason why i didn't get the Golf GTE yet ! ;-)
Pop Laurentiu I would still buy a VW E Golf/GTE over a Ioniq anyway. It’s just more practical for me, personally. But if I didn’t have the needs that I have I would by the Hyundai.
As a 6ft 2 owner of this car, I don’t have an issue with head room in the back seat. If you choose to tilt your head as far back as possible to reach the roof then good for you. Otherwise it’s not an issue: the head restraint is set correctly would stop you getting to that point anyway. Poor reviewing of this great value, award winning hybrid. The tech as standard is not matched by competitors, especially in the price point. Don’t just go on videos, go experience and make your own minds up
I drive in one of the world's safest cities and had strangers open the door more than once, usually confused or drunk people but still frightening. Turning the start/stop off and pressing the door-lock function is now standard procedure when I start the car in the city. Now I just honk the (upgraded) horn and make their ears bleed when they rattle the door handle. Kinda wish that was automatic as well if the ignition and driver seatbelt is on.

Also I think it's a shame and a little hypocritical that they made a video a while ago about how to correctly pronounce car company names and Hyundai was one of them but a shame he still pronounces it incorrectly "Hi-yoon-die" versus "hee-yun-day". A bit ironic and not a big deal but it's like c'mon now, you should practice what you preach. Not sure why I'm leaving this comment/I noticed it so much in this video but I guess it's cause I'm a huge fan of matt's reviews and by association carwow
Got the Hyundai hybrid Premium SE model recently. (2018 -UK) Loving it. Easily the best car I have ever had. Early days but averaging 62 mpg although I did have it in the sport mode a few times which makes it feel a different car again. Have to get used to a silent car on start up. Looks stunning in the platinum silver finish and much better looking than the Prius. Dual clutch automatic super smooth.
@@solite4168 Yes big problem ,hampers visibility which is not great out the rear window anyways..not suitable for irish roads and irish weather, would have cost Hyundai a few pounds to put a rear wiper on!
It's not a normal auto but a DSG, but on acceleration in auto mode the first 2 gears kinda short shift, so you get a slight jolt - much better in sport mode. Adaptive cruise-control and Active lane assist work pretty well too, even in our Baltic road conditions. Upper windows doesn't need a wiper because airflow over it keeps it clean but the lower part is pretty much all the time dirty and cannot be seen throught (at least in december)
What killed it for me when I test drove it was the bar across the back windshield for the spoiler. I ended up getting a Sonata Hybrid. Its bigger, easier to see out of but has a small cut to mileage compared to the Ioniq. Usually get about 40mpg everytime I drive it.
Not the best car but you haven't mentioned AEB, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist etc. From the start you held a negative outlook of this car. I can't trust your reviews anymore.
Answering your question, Matt - 17inch are regular road tires, while the 15 inch are special tires with decreased rolling resistance. Not sure why would someone trade grip and security for some 10% better mileage, though.
Had this car until I got rear-ended by someone staring at the phone and totalling it. It's a pretty great car. One of the main reasons I got it is for the Android auto/Apple Carplay. My only complaint with this car is the transmission. I wouldn't call it smooth, but the gas mileage is hard to complain about. I would also add that there actually is a place to keep the load cover in the plug in version, under the rear floor (which also is level with the rear seats folded down and probably easier to load things in and out of)
I can confirm as an owner that 1.75 + people with high hair do touch their head when fully relaxed, but if you don't rest your head on the headrest I can fit just fine at 1.82 with room to spare (It's actually really awkward to rest on the headrest, as the rear seats are somewhat inclined).
Amazing car, great review! Living in the U.S. with 60% of our electricity produced by carbon emitting fuels, plus the respiration of plants while driving in the woods (compared to major upper atmosphere CO2 contributions from sites burning coal or natural gas in one location - to recharge electric cars), this thing is probably more environmentally friendly at 68 mpg compared to electric vehicles.
Strange because on carwow the ioniq review wasn't very positive, whilst the Prius review was, but on carbuyer it was the opposite. So which car is better?
The flat badge is on a lot of cars these days. That’s where the radar is located for AEB, so they can’t put a normal chrome-coated badge in front of it. Have a look at recent Mercs.
Boris de Melo Benz still has an in-depth badge on the front of the car with possibility to have the old symbol that goes up ad down and stuff. Then they do have a flat symbol that occupies the whole design, not just a transparent board with the brands symbol in the middle. This one seems to be a very bad and rushed decision.
Could you be any more negative in your review? The reason that most people buy a hybrid vehicle is economy. We want something that is practicle yet comfortable as our daily commuter to and from work, which in many cases means that one or two people would be in the vehicle most of the time. Hyundai managed to deliver such a vehicle to the automotive market. Hyundai also backs up the battery pack of the Ionic with an 8 year warranty, along with the 10 year / 100k mile warrenty, which is something that is un-matched by most of the competitors.
So I've been looking into these for the past few days, to buy a used 2018 one like this, and I've been joking with my husband that if i get one, I'm going to put lettering by the car's name on the back so it reads "isn't it Ioniq? Don't you think?" It's our wedding song too because it was outdoors and raining, and the next day we gave my parents a free ride to the airport when they'd already paid xD So i was really glad to hear at the start of this video that I'm not the only person who thought of that song with this car xD
No rear wiper and poor rear headroom are unforgivable in an otherwise laudable effort, particularly the latter, which will rule it out for many as a viable taxicab, a niche which the Prius filled so well.
I personally found the infotainment one of the best “touch-only” systems I have ever used. Also, the front badge is not plastic because of aerodynamics, but because there is the adaptive cruise control radar hidden underneath it.
2 problems with this car, visability and rear-headroom. Otherwise it's an AMAZING CAR!!! Hyundai is just doing extraordinary things atm. I think they are the best car manufacturer right now by far. Such a shame Matt is such a badge snob.
well i love that chime!! and the car, iv rented that car and its amazing!!! that car is so amazing to drive, and the gadgets are fantastic, it drives itself on the motorway!! your annoying im afraid!!!
I love Mat's reviews, but so much missing from this one, All the standard safety kit etc, no mention of the Active cruise control (which not many cars get as standard) plus others, Plus no research done on why the badge is flat at the front.

It's a shame he puts so much of his own prejudice in the reviews. For whatever reason, he seems to hate Hyundai vehicles, have seen this with i30 review. Matt, I used to think you did good reviews. Grow up please.
before talk wait 2 seconds and think... on aerdodynamics car with rear window highly inclinated, water and dust just flow away due to aerodynamic flow, unlike hatcbacks where the rear window is always dirt and rear wiper is usefull
I bought it for the MPG but I'm not liking the interior. INTERIOR IS UNCOMFORTABLE. I'm 6 feet and if I keep my seat comfortable there's no space for anyone under maybe 4 feet 5 back there. The trunk opens manual, no front lever or fob key button to open it. It feels claustrophobic if you have 4 people. The good. MPG maybe consider buying the Hyundai sonata limited for the same price and more luxury.
Am I the only one who noticed that this is the model featured in this movie? -Take any hybrid you like. (reveals Aston Martin) Johnny English: I'll take this one.
Toyota,Honda,Hyundai or Kia for those who don't have plenty of money or respect their money...I just bought Corolla hybrid, get it on Monday...only problem they fold easily on crash...so for interior and quality and power you can buy a German car like Mercedes but for efficiency and long driving with minimum problems those cars are amazing,if I didn't get the Corolla I would buy a Hyundai which gives 8 years warranty like Kia which it's the same actually
I don’t really understand why anyone would buy this over the PHEV or full EV versions. I suppose they are about £4K more but if you charge thee PHEV as much as you can then you’ll make up a lot of that over time. And you’ll have a far more fun car to drive if you buy the EV.
AkarZaephyr I think it’s mainly financial and whether people would make up the extra cost difference in fuel savings. Or environmental if you want to make more of a positive impact and you’re willing to pay more.
I really wish someone like you would do motorcycle reviews. In all channels except FortNine the hole content is "rides good" plus a lot of fancy riding footage.
One more time for the folks in the back -- and just because the BEV doesn't have its own Mat Watson video: it's totally fine (so far) that EVs cost more up-front than their petrol and diesel counterparts, because they cost next to NOTHING to run and maintain. My 2020 Hyundai Ioniq BEV costs just over 1 cent Canadian per km to charge at current kilowatt prices, and I visit my mechanic 1/3 as often. The main weak spot appears to be the 12-volt battery that powers the lights and the infotainment system. Add to that: Korean manufacturers make the most efficient models for winter use. ICE efficiency takes a roughly 20% hit in a true four-season climate too, but nobody seems to mention that.
It is more than all right, is the best car we have ever owned. Comfortable with individual air conditioning either side of car. Best, it gives 60mpg uphill & 70mpg downhill including the 7,600 ft Mescalero mountain we cross frequently. Your review is unwarrantedly bad.

2:03 - Mat and his puns.. *facepalm*
I have the Blue and I really like it. My best mpg is 67.8, which is just so awesome.
I need a real time owners review of this car, preferably someone who plans to keep it beyond the manufacturers warranty period.
First time I've watched a car wow review, never again.
Strange because on carwow the ioniq review wasn't very positive, whilst the Prius review was, but on carbuyer it was the opposite. So which car is better?
Jeremy Nechytaylo PRIUS IS WAY BETTER LOL.
overall design its good but the paint job looks poor and the side profile looks a bit outdated.
Ioniq defo
Mat seems to have downplayed this car a lot, has tonnes of tech normally only seen on premium cars, plus its one of the safest on the road.
Man you are the best car reviewer on RUclips 😉✌️
The flat badge is on a lot of cars these days. That’s where the radar is located for AEB, so they can’t put a normal chrome-coated badge in front of it. Have a look at recent Mercs.
Boris de Melo Benz still has an in-depth badge on the front of the car with possibility to have the old symbol that goes up ad down and stuff. Then they do have a flat symbol that occupies the whole design, not just a transparent board with the brands symbol in the middle. This one seems to be a very bad and rushed decision.
Beeps and chimes of this car is majestic. It reminds me of Christmas
Wow cool Ioniq hybrid=)))

Could you be any more negative in your review? The reason that most people buy a hybrid vehicle is economy. We want something that is practicle yet comfortable as our daily commuter to and from work, which in many cases means that one or two people would be in the vehicle most of the time. Hyundai managed to deliver such a vehicle to the automotive market. Hyundai also backs up the battery pack of the Ionic with an 8 year warranty, along with the 10 year / 100k mile warrenty, which is something that is un-matched by most of the competitors.
So true! Matt was probably paid by the likes of Toyota...
Shame on him!
An excellent car. I have the 2019 blue model, and (in cold weather) I am getting 47mpg. Awesome. Looking for 60-70 in spring and summer. (Eastern US)
why cold weather it does less? do lights go off frequently?
@@PITU-f7f effects the battery my guess
So I've been looking into these for the past few days, to buy a used 2018 one like this, and I've been joking with my husband that if i get one, I'm going to put lettering by the car's name on the back so it reads "isn't it Ioniq? Don't you think?"
It's our wedding song too because it was outdoors and raining, and the next day we gave my parents a free ride to the airport when they'd already paid xD
So i was really glad to hear at the start of this video that I'm not the only person who thought of that song with this car xD
I like the looks, it’s different
No rear wiper and poor rear headroom are unforgivable in an otherwise laudable effort, particularly the latter, which will rule it out for many as a viable taxicab, a niche which the Prius filled so well.
Nice vid man!!!👌🏼👌🏼🔥
Revolutionary review language - "very car like"
I personally found the infotainment one of the best “touch-only” systems I have ever used.
Hi Mats, my 10 year old son likes your reviews a lot. Keep it up
well i love that chime!! and the car, iv rented that car and its amazing!!! that car is so amazing to drive, and the gadgets are fantastic, it drives itself on the motorway!! your annoying im afraid!!!
I love everything about it but the visibility the front pillars and the back design needs some tweaking
I have purchased a premium se model excellent for driving around town and pretty good for motorway driving aswell
Terrific review by an amusing guy. "Just Consider" it. Thanks Mat.
Felt a extremely good car after driving this car.
I love Mat's reviews, but so much missing from this one, All the standard safety kit etc, no mention of the Active cruise control (which not many cars get as standard) plus others,
Plus no research done on why the badge is flat at the front.
When you said "Carwow.co.uk" I was expecting a "/oversteer" for some reason...
just imagine how many quirks can doug found in this car lol
hmmmm, im sure that doug de muro and the guy from hoovies garage says that,
Give that car a Doug Score
Anything about quirks and features?
3:30 that expression 🤣
The video felt rushed...
hey @Car wow, where's the passion in the review ??
Its like Mat really didn't enjoy reviewing this car
Peter susan He prob had the flu. Sounds a bit ill.
Probably because it's shit

It's a shame he puts so much of his own prejudice in the reviews. For whatever reason, he seems to hate Hyundai vehicles, have seen this with i30 review. Matt, I used to think you did good reviews. Grow up please.
Can you do a review on the BMW 330e and how it compares to the IONIC?
whaaaaaaaaaaaat? no rear wiper? are they crazy? this should be illegal
before talk wait 2 seconds and think...
on aerdodynamics car with rear window highly inclinated, water and dust just flow away due to aerodynamic flow, unlike hatcbacks where the rear window is always dirt and rear wiper is usefull
yes,u will die for not having a rear wiper
but I'm a very passive driver and i just wouldn't feel safe..
Tony x terrible, just terrible.
Lots of saloon type cars have no rear wiper. Oddly hatchbacks usually do even though the water would run off a steep screen more quickly.
Mat is the best. Greetings from Bosnia
Very very very nice car after test it my self
We don’t want the hybrid we want to see the fully electric version.
7:41 Matt enjoys the new Hyundai Ioniq, because it has a built-in Autoblow 2. 😉 Haha
20 seconds in and it already looks 10 times better than the Prius
Excellent review
Mat Watson is decidedly biased against all Hyundai Cars. Too bad for him.
Bollocks
James Kim A few years ago, at CarBuyer, he gave car of the year award to the Hyundai i30...
god bless you for using the metric system this time ! :D
at least for your height ... always thought you're a giant!
74 to the gallon? I've got 83 out of ours and my father in law broke 90.
Wow that lack of rear headroom is a massive deal breaker
I bought it for the MPG but I'm not liking the interior. INTERIOR IS UNCOMFORTABLE. I'm 6 feet and if I keep my seat comfortable there's no space for anyone under maybe 4 feet 5 back there. The trunk opens manual, no front lever or fob key button to open it. It feels claustrophobic if you have 4 people.
The good. MPG maybe consider buying the Hyundai sonata limited for the same price and more luxury.
Am I the only one who never understand those signs rear passengers make ? Very difficult to tell if they're liking it or not
Am I the only one who noticed that this is the model featured in this movie?
-Take any hybrid you like.
(reveals Aston Martin)
Johnny English: I'll take this one.
Very good reviewer
It looks A LOT BETTER than Toyota Prius.
Rain on your wedding day isn't ironic unless you're a parasol maker Matt.
I don’t really understand why anyone would buy this over the PHEV or full EV versions. I suppose they are about £4K more but if you charge thee PHEV as much as you can then you’ll make up a lot of that over time. And you’ll have a far more fun car to drive if you buy the EV.
Because single-trip range? :) If you're stuck 100% inside a city, yup, go for PHEV/EV.
AkarZaephyr I think it’s mainly financial and whether people would make up the extra cost difference in fuel savings. Or environmental if you want to make more of a positive impact and you’re willing to pay more.
Ah, true, there's the price difference, too.
Considered it..
Bought one..
Me too :) love it and been driving for almost 2 years now, no problems and 100% fun & economical
@@jukkal4382 did you find the headroom at the back as bad as its in the review?
Not expecting alanis interlude 😂
Better than prius in terms of design
Prius v Niro v Ioniq head to head coming soon
My wife purchased one when it came out. It is a good vehicle but the first recall was announced. I have to get it checked out at the dealer..
Anyone noticed how rough he is in every review. Crash, bang on everything. Also it isn't the roof you're hitting your head on, it's the ceiling!
I really wish someone like you would do motorcycle reviews. In all channels except FortNine the hole content is "rides good" plus a lot of fancy riding footage.
I like the fact that it only blows you when you're alone in the car.
Definitely looks better than latest Prius but don't know it drivetrain is good enough. Will stick with Lexus for now.
Without the sloping roof and a hatch that goes down all the way, this would be perfect.
3 minutes in and I'm definitely getting the impression that Matt does not like this car!
It is more than all right, is the best car we have ever owned. Comfortable with individual air conditioning either side of car. Best, it gives 60mpg uphill & 70mpg downhill including the 7,600 ft Mescalero mountain we cross frequently.
Your review is unwarrantedly bad.
hi there i must disagree with what you said about the door reflecters you can see them for a long way thats a good thing in my book
What a neat car
I bought it 3 years later. the 2020 plugin model. looks so much better then this.
