Dave, I want to say that I'm very happy and excited to see you reviewing a base model vehicle. I'm really annoyed that most car reviews these days are just fully loaded cars with all the extra options added. Congrats to have gone with a base model. I sincerely wish more car reviewers would do the same, and show us lower trim level cars. My03Tundra you will be surprised of the power it has. Don't forget its super light and has a low drag coeff. So its like the equivalant of 160 horse(or so it feels). I have the mid trim of the car

Rolando Cordero The Prius Prime does look much better than a regular Prius, however the prime model you lose the middle seat in the rear and the cargo deck floor is significantly higher losing some cargo capacity. I wish I could have the Prius Prime exterior design with the front headlights and rear tail lights in every Prius. But this Hyundai ioniq is a really nice car I drove one and if you don't like cvts, this is a nice 6p dual-clutch that works quite well definitely the most normal car of any hybrid I've driven
Will never understand mechanically operated seats (vs. power) as a dislike. It's one less thing to break or go wrong over the life of the vehicle. That'd be a like in my books.

One more reason I love my Ioniq ... I went swimming yesterday with the fob in my swimsuit. I was in the pool for at least 10 minutes before I realized I was drowning my fob. Pulled the key and shook very little water out. All functions still working. Put it in rice overnight and still working this morning. Way to go Hyundai!!
Love how my Ioniq has a regular 6 speed automatic. Not a awful CVT transmission. The split rear window is not an issue for me and I haven’t missed a rear wiper because the aerodynamics seem to keep the upper glass clear. I also I’ve the hatchback because it adds so much more versatility to the vehicle vs. a trunk. Its been a great car so far and the MPG’s are amazing especially coming from a full size truck. A lot of the gripes in this video can be cured by going up a trim level or two.
I bought a 2017 Ioniq and have driven about 800 miles now and I'm getting around 63-64 MPG! (sports mode for acceleration and eco all other times) I love it except I have had 2 minor small plastic parts slightly break. the seat "lifter" handle is loose and the driver's side door handle trim is starting to fall off. but I'm covered with a 125,000 bumper to bumper warranty so not too worried.
Other options include all the "not Likes, like power seats. However, I'm glad you mentioned the split window, because other reviews haven't mentioned this issue...it's an issue for me.
I appreciate Dave's objective criticism on the Ioniq. I see a lot of reviewers give it blind praise but Dave really gives his honest impressions and didn't pull any punches on this review. Thanks Dave!
Im getting the Ioniq 2018 premium version on Tuesday,31000 miles on clock only, fully equipped. Swapping my Ford Kuga for this because of the fuel consumption,i drive a lot and Kuga cost me fortune 😂

I think Hyundai is now a better car company that Toyota. Toyota no longer knows what cars should look like. Hyundai does and they are very reliable according to Consumer Reports.
Christopher Calder My brother's in-laws have a 2007 Kia Sedona minivan, and they've driven it across the country from Tucson, AZ to Boston, MA. They've had little to no issues with it, and recently bought a 2013 Kia Soul. I'm looking at getting a new car, and Hyundai/Kia are on my radar.
my03Tundra, a 2007 car is a new car in many countries, yet, in my country old hyundais(2008 sonatas) are called Bombs, because they tend to blow their engines. Yet Toyota is toyota, you won't see them failing like Hyundais.
This is the first production car to eliminate the 12 volt starter battery. Essentially it reserves a small part of the lithium car battery for that starter function and should that get drained then a switch on the dash panel can internally jump start the starter battery, this saves 26 lbs. in weight and several future costs of replacing a starter battery every 5 years at about $200 each time. This is an awesome car, best warranty of all car companies @ 10 yr. or 100k power train warranty, plus a lifetime lithium battery warranty!, and it's got the best MPG with a lower price than the Prius!! I consistently get 61 m.p.g. Finally it's more attractive in my opinion. Awesome car Hyundai. BTW, I nearly never use the sport mode. Yes, some things about the car seem cheap but the trade off is less weight. Dashboard technology seems very advanced but easy to use. Yeah, rear split window isn't ideal. Approximately 670 mile range on one tank of gas, that's awesome. 11 gallons @ $3/gallon = only $33 !! @ 61 mpg. Yes, I love how quiet it is, the electric mode is super quiet, come to a stop light then this car is absolutely noiseless, which is extremely calming. 😊. My Uber or Lyft riders are always asking questions about this car. They are very impressed by this car. Mine is the base model, blue.
@@highcountrypioneer3025 according to the their brochure the Blue gets 58 mpg, the SEL gets 55 mpg and the Limited gets 55 mpg. I almost always get better than the 58 mpg, as much as 65.8 with my Blue. Driving range is 690 miles on a tank of gas and 654 for the other two higher trim levels.
Thus why I will have to scratch this (more so the plug-in version I woulda wanted) off my potential next car list. Ioniq talks about using sugar cane as a more environmentally friendly interior, yet use animal skin... stupid.. would had been nice if base level had no leather interior at all but ohwell.

I'm finding this Ioniq very appealing with a couple of exceptions. Although I think the interior style is very clean and attractive, the all black interior looks very industrial-grade and unwelcoming. 2-tone black/beige and black/gray choices would be a lot more appealing to my eye. My other gripe is the MPG. Everyone who buys one of these will do so because they want top notch fuel economy that this car is supposed to deliver. I've watched probably a half dozen reviews on this car and not one reviewer has been able to achieve 57-59mpg as it's rated.
I'm so thankful you put average miles per gallon and what I also care about, average miles per hour and traveled. It gives us a gauge at how efficient it can be at a specific speed. In this case 29 mph would be 'city' driving.
I'd get this when I can afford it. since I want to drive across the U.S to Colorado and since I already do alot of driving. would be nice to get this kind of gas mileage.

Also, does your driving breakdown reset every time you go for a drive or do you have to manually reset it? Looks decent for hybrid. Aside from manual seat adjustments. I'm curious of seat comfort. particularly back support. That's whats driving me to wander from my Outback.

Only the base "Blue" trim has a manual driver's seat. The SEL and Limited both have a 10-way power seat with adjustable lumbar and also heated front seats. The SEL is $1750 more, but I think the upgrades make it a much more appealing trim.
I love that he went with the base model, but explained all the extras it could have at the higher trims. I have been looking into this car a lot and may go for the SEL just because of the power seats and blind-spot assist.

I Do like the safety features Back Up and Side Blind Spot Monitors. I have the power driver seat. I am not crazy about not having a spar tire. The sport mode is cool it actually changes your gages goes to tack and speedometer.
I really wanted to get this car still deciding. The back split is a huge dislike. I can take comestic downgrade for fuel efficiency but comestic annoyance and view blocking like that is difficult to want to handle every time I'm looking in back of me. The fuel efficiency seems to never actually be achieved but it's still better than any regular hybrid. The next biggest disappointment is you lose gas mileage as you go up in trim which is a real let down. At this rate I might end up with Kia niro.
There's no power seat - Because you're in the BASE model. Upper trim level has a power seat. Your last few "Dislikes" don't seem to make sense. But then, considering how likable the Ioniq is, I guess I can't really blame you lol.
I have notice that two different times when I thought I had filled up I must have had air in my tank. The quickest way I realize this is when I get around 40 miles and my gas gauge drop a quarter of a quarter from full.
Really thinking about getting a used one of these. How do you think it will do in Central NY? Specifically in winter? Being as we got the new van coming there is not sense in having two vans in the drive way. Especially when I can save a ton on fuel with one of these. It's going to be weird going from a 04 Dodge Durango with a HEMI. Sadly the Durango gave up at 196,000 miles on the original engine.
Hi Dave, I really enjoy your reviews! I was driving a 2014 Mazda 3 with manual transmission and I loved that car; however, it was totaled after a hail storm. I decided that I was not going to buy another car right away and carpool with my wife instead. She drives a Jeep Cherokee 2015. Now, for my next car I have been considering the the Hyundai Elantra Sport (with the manual transmission of course), but now that I've seen a few videos about the Ioniq Hybrid I am kind of thinking about it. Is there a huge cost savings (fuel, maintenance, etc) from the Ioniq Hybrid vs the Elantra Sport? Thanks!
This demo is showing the lowest cost model, so it doesn't have features that come with the higher trim levels, such as the power driver's seat that's on the SEL model. The sport mode gives you fast acceleration, but you pay for that with half the fuel efficiency than in normal hybrid mode. I have been driving my new 2018 Ionic Hybrid SEL for about 1 week and love the car. Mine doesn't have the premium technology package, but still it has plenty of features.
Measuring mpgs with the car's computer estimate rarely is based on an accurate model. In my tdi I can get the trip computer to read 68mpg, but calculating the trip mileage to pump fill up is way down to 54mpg.
Does the battery warranty mean if something is wrong with it, it'll be replaced but it will not include normal wear and tear (basically a selling gimmick) ?
Hybrid wheel covers, including Prius, are plastic for saving weight and designed to reduce drag coefficient. I stay away from used Hybrids that previous owner switched out the OEM wheel covers and rims, that reduces MPG.
59mpg is pretty damn impressive, although I did get 60mpg in my non-hybrid Civic and often get 50mpg (hwy). Hate that it doesn't come with a spare tire but with a tire puncture repair kit which is useless in a blowout. I would have been stranded the last 10 times I've had a blowout. But the price of only $21k (Truecar) which is pretty damn good. I guess I can buy a spare tire at that price.
Something a little strange, The UK version is reported as 83mpg with owners reporting real world consumption of 70mpg. (Hyundai ioniq 1.6 SE Hybrid 2017)
Like your videos - as always! Recently got a Kia Niro (and liking it so far) which I believe has the same engine/battery. Yeah... not a fan of those wheels.
This is the same chassis and power train as the Niro, just a different body. This trim is equivalent to the Niro FE, the lowest (but most fuel efficient) trim available. The higher trims have better wheels.
The fuel Economy rating are not accurate I zero out my mileage when I fill up and divide the miles by gallons of gas my last fill up was 42 mpg. Still under 2000 miles hope it improves. I have the limited with 17 Inch wheels and really wonder if its killing my MPG. And I keep my tire pressure at 36 psi. I would be happy getting 48 to 50 MPG. My window sticker states 55 MPG.

I own one, plus a Toyota Pruis Prime, and a 2011 Honda Insight. I like the proper gearbox on the Hyundai. what happens if the car is in electric mode and you park it and walk away without hitting the start button? does it continue to cycle the gas engine thinking its still turned on?
Doug N H/K cars beep at you when you close the door with the fob outside the car when it's on. It's pretty hard to ignore. It also won't let you lock it.
You can also listen to music from a USB drive plugged into that same single USB port where he plugged-in the phone cable. There's a USB charging port in the center console storage box, but it's not wired into the media player. You can also upload from the USB drive into the media player's internal memory (about 700 mb capacity, which is plenty for quite a large playlist of mp3 audio files because they're compressed). That way, you remove the USB drive and can play your favorite music files and still have the USB port free for your phone so you can navigate with the phone displaying on the media screen.
The video was very good but gave it a thumbs down due to I have been complaining about 49-53 mpg with little battery usage shown on the display. It has been showing ‘low’ for the battery usage but in SE Alabama Technicians think that is normal. Also the road noise is loud as in comparison when I first got it. Also, now the motor nosies are strange and loud sounding when idling when first started. Will not move - I thought my car would not move when started frequently but now think it would not start the every time but i would have to turn it off and restart to get the green car icon with the car and arrow. Lastly, at times the interior lights stay on when I never turned them on. COMMENTS? Did I get a LEMON?
Do not know why I get such a variance in my MPG. I try to drive the same at all time I try to drive it moderately. I am wondering if the Humidity is high if that could effect my MPG?

I have watched a lot of these so called reviews and every one of them is false and that includes this one. Some people are purposely giving bad numbers and some are just ignorant of how to come up with true numbers but the result is the same, incorrect numbers. You CANNOT use the numbers from the vehicle. it is no different than with a totally gas vehicle. You do not use the numbers that the vehicle says for MPG. You have to calculate the real MPG at the pump fill-up against the miles driven. It is no different with an EV or a hybrid. You start out full and at every charging you see how many KWs you put back in to the vehicle according t the charge station not according to the vehicles dash computer. Then you calculate the usage.

"You are lucky you get 48, I get 33 in city" - 33? Were you participating in some Top Gear Chernobyl stunt to get the lowest possible MPG? Even press models that journalists beat on have reported MPG in the 40's. Especially conscious drivers have reported MPGs in the 70s'. User mushroomstamp a couple below this comment reported 81 MPG.
All of the cars' mpg ratings are done using standardized driving cycles under laboratory conditions, not actual on the road measurements, so cars can be compared. If your driving involves lots of starts and stops, you'll be using more fuel than a driving cycle that has less stop-and-go. Still, 48 mpg is great for city driving when compared with a non-hybrid gasoline engine car. And cities are not all the same. My 2011 Kia Sportage (non-hybrid) once got me 34 mpg on a very flat highway, but I average about 22.5 mpg in my city driving. My new 2018 Ioniq hybrid is getting about 58 mpg under the same city driving conditions, which include some hill climbing.
I'd never buy a hybrid, you have the servicing costs of a petrol engine, low power of an eco engine, i think the low cost of ev ownership and the power of an ev, would suit me best.
Mark Tiller What EV has a low cost?? Even the cheapest electric vehicle is $10k more than this. pure electric vehicles don't offer the flexibility and range necessary for many people. You would have to do a cost analysis for your particular situation, to see which is best.
Regarding this Hybrid, I live in Las Vegas, NV, and it gets really hot here in the summer up to 120 degrees sometimes. Well, my question is, Will the hybrid battery last through the high heat and will it still run? If I can get an answer to this, it would be really helpful because i'm thinking of buying one but, have not had a hybrid yet. This would be my first one, once I decide on what Hyundai vehicle to buy.
I bought this car , still waiting the delivery. I was told from seller that battery works well with high temperature than low. So it ahould cosume less gasoline in the summer.

Another review I watched (I forget which), showed that the rear view via the mirror is on point and just fine, despite the split.

Yes, some things about the car seem cheap but the trade off is less weight. Dashboard technology seems very advanced but easy to use. Yeah, rear split window isn't ideal. Approximately 670 mile range on one tank of gas, that's awesome. 11 gallons @ $3/gallon = only $33 !! @ 61 mpg. Yes, I love how quiet it is, the electric mode is super quiet, come to a stop light then this car is absolutely noiseless, which is extremely calming. 😊. My Uber or Lyft riders are always asking questions about this car. They are very impressed by this car. Mine is the base model, blue.

@@highcountrypioneer3025 according to the their brochure the Blue gets 58 mpg, the SEL gets 55 mpg and the Limited gets 55 mpg. I almost always get better than the 58 mpg, as much as 65.8 with my Blue. Driving range is 690 miles on a tank of gas and 654 for the other two higher trim levels.
Power seat is available in other trims even memory power seat with real leather not like fake leather in Prius... You are reviewing base model Ioniq.
Thus why I will have to scratch this (more so the plug-in version I woulda wanted) off my potential next car list. Ioniq talks about using sugar cane as a more environmentally friendly interior, yet use animal skin... stupid.. would had been nice if base level had no leather interior at all but ohwell.

I'm finding this Ioniq very appealing with a couple of exceptions. Although I think the interior style is very clean and attractive, the all black interior looks very industrial-grade and unwelcoming. 2-tone black/beige and black/gray choices would be a lot more appealing to my eye. My other gripe is the MPG. Everyone who buys one of these will do so because they want top notch fuel economy that this car is supposed to deliver. I've watched probably a half dozen reviews on this car and not one reviewer has been able to achieve 57-59mpg as it's rated.
I'm so thankful you put average miles per gallon and what I also care about, average miles per hour and traveled. It gives us a gauge at how efficient it can be at a specific speed. In this case 29 mph would be 'city' driving.
I'd get this when I can afford it. since I want to drive across the U.S to Colorado and since I already do alot of driving. would be nice to get this kind of gas mileage.

Also, does your driving breakdown reset every time you go for a drive or do you have to manually reset it? Looks decent for hybrid. Aside from manual seat adjustments. I'm curious of seat comfort. particularly back support. That's whats driving me to wander from my Outback.
Remember this is the base model, you can get leather and power seats, including 2-way lumbar, on the higher trims.

Only the base "Blue" trim has a manual driver's seat. The SEL and Limited both have a 10-way power seat with adjustable lumbar and also heated front seats. The SEL is $1750 more, but I think the upgrades make it a much more appealing trim.
Test drove the 2020 PRIUS PRIME and the 2020 IONIQ and the difference in cabin noise was noticeably louder on the PRIME.

I love that he went with the base model, but explained all the extras it could have at the higher trims. I have been looking into this car a lot and may go for the SEL just because of the power seats and blind-spot assist.

I like that there is space for a doughnut spare tire beneath the cargo floor panel which is unusual for a hybrid.
I Do like the safety features Back Up and Side Blind Spot Monitors. I have the power driver seat. I am not crazy about not having a spar tire. The sport mode is cool it actually changes your gages goes to tack and speedometer.

I really wanted to get this car still deciding. The back split is a huge dislike. I can take comestic downgrade for fuel efficiency but comestic annoyance and view blocking like that is difficult to want to handle every time I'm looking in back of me. The fuel efficiency seems to never actually be achieved but it's still better than any regular hybrid. The next biggest disappointment is you lose gas mileage as you go up in trim which is a real let down. At this rate I might end up with Kia niro.
There's no power seat - Because you're in the BASE model. Upper trim level has a power seat. Your last few "Dislikes" don't seem to make sense. But then, considering how likable the Ioniq is, I guess I can't really blame you lol.

I have notice that two different times when I thought I had filled up I must have had air in my tank. The quickest way I realize this is when I get around 40 miles and my gas gauge drop a quarter of a quarter from full.
Really thinking about getting a used one of these. How do you think it will do in Central NY? Specifically in winter? Being as we got the new van coming there is not sense in having two vans in the drive way. Especially when I can save a ton on fuel with one of these. It's going to be weird going from a 04 Dodge Durango with a HEMI. Sadly the Durango gave up at 196,000 miles on the original engine.
Hi Dave, I really enjoy your reviews! I was driving a 2014 Mazda 3 with manual transmission and I loved that car; however, it was totaled after a hail storm. I decided that I was not going to buy another car right away and carpool with my wife instead. She drives a Jeep Cherokee 2015. Now, for my next car I have been considering the the Hyundai Elantra Sport (with the manual transmission of course), but now that I've seen a few videos about the Ioniq Hybrid I am kind of thinking about it. Is there a huge cost savings (fuel, maintenance, etc) from the Ioniq Hybrid vs the Elantra Sport?

This demo is showing the lowest cost model, so it doesn't have features that come with the higher trim levels, such as the power driver's seat that's on the SEL model. The sport mode gives you fast acceleration, but you pay for that with half the fuel efficiency than in normal hybrid mode. I have been driving my new 2018 Ionic Hybrid SEL for about 1 week and love the car. Mine doesn't have the premium technology package, but still it has plenty of features.
Measuring mpgs with the car's computer estimate rarely is based on an accurate model. In my tdi I can get the trip computer to read 68mpg, but calculating the trip mileage to pump fill up is way down to 54mpg.

I have an error below as I drove 47 miles and it took 1.495 gal of gas to fill so must have had air in my tank when I filled it up.
Hybrid wheel covers, including Prius, are plastic for saving weight and designed to reduce drag coefficient. I stay away from used Hybrids that previous owner switched out the OEM wheel covers and rims, that reduces MPG.
Do you expect navigation and heated seats from a base model ?
59mpg is pretty damn impressive, although I did get 60mpg in my non-hybrid Civic and often get 50mpg (hwy).
Hate that it doesn't come with a spare tire but with a tire puncture repair kit which is useless in a blowout. I would have been stranded the last 10 times I've had a blowout. But the price of only $21k (Truecar) which is pretty damn good. I guess I can buy a spare tire at that price.
No wheel well to store the spare. I would just get roadside assistance if you need it (some credit cards include the benefit too).
Something a little strange, The UK version is reported as 83mpg with owners reporting real world consumption of 70mpg.

Recently got a Kia Niro (and liking it so far) which I believe has the same engine/battery.
Yeah... not a fan of those wheels.
This is the same chassis and power train as the Niro, just a different body. This trim is equivalent to the Niro FE, the lowest (but most fuel efficient) trim available. The higher trims have better wheels.
Don't the other trims have power seats?

The fuel Economy rating are not accurate I zero out my mileage when I fill up and divide the miles by gallons of gas my last fill up was 42 mpg. Still under 2000 miles hope it improves. I have the limited with 17 Inch wheels and really wonder if its killing my MPG. And I keep my tire pressure at 36 psi. I would be happy getting 48 to 50 MPG. My window sticker states 55 MPG.

what happens if the car is in electric mode and you park it and walk away without hitting the start button? does it continue to cycle the gas engine thinking its still turned on?
Doug N H/K cars beep at you when you close the door with the fob outside the car when it's on. It's pretty hard to ignore. It also won't let you lock it.

yes
You can also listen to music from a USB drive plugged into that same single USB port where he plugged-in the phone cable. There's a USB charging port in the center console storage box, but it's not wired into the media player. You can also upload from the USB drive into the media player's internal memory (about 700 mb capacity, which is plenty for quite a large playlist of mp3 audio files because they're compressed). That way, you remove the USB drive and can play your favorite music files and still have the USB port free for your phone so you can navigate with the phone displaying on the media screen.
The video was very good but gave it a thumbs down due to I have been complaining about 49-53 mpg with little battery usage shown on the display. It has been showing ‘low’ for the battery usage but in SE Alabama Technicians think that is normal. Also the road noise is loud as in comparison when I first got it. Also, now the motor nosies are strange and loud sounding when idling when first started.
Will not move - I thought my car would not move when started frequently but now think it would not start the every time but i would have to turn it off and restart to get the green car icon with the car and arrow. Lastly, at times the interior lights stay on when I never turned them on. COMMENTS? Did I get a LEMON?

I have watched a lot of these so called reviews and every one of them is false and that includes this one. Some people are purposely giving bad numbers and some are just ignorant of how to come up with true numbers but the result is the same, incorrect numbers. You CANNOT use the numbers from the vehicle. it is no different than with a totally gas vehicle. You do not use the numbers that the vehicle says for MPG. You have to calculate the real MPG at the pump fill-up against the miles driven. It is no different with an EV or a hybrid. You start out full and at every charging you see how many KWs you put back in to the vehicle according t the charge station not according to the vehicles dash computer. Then you calculate the usage.
Guess you should start doing reviews for us all and then we all will no the truth .

Even press models that journalists beat on have reported MPG in the 40's. Especially conscious drivers have reported MPGs in the 70s'. User mushroomstamp a couple below this comment reported 81 MPG.
All of the cars' mpg ratings are done using standardized driving cycles under laboratory conditions, not actual on the road measurements, so cars can be compared. If your driving involves lots of starts and stops, you'll be using more fuel than a driving cycle that has less stop-and-go. Still, 48 mpg is great for city driving when compared with a non-hybrid gasoline engine car. And cities are not all the same. My 2011 Kia Sportage (non-hybrid) once got me 34 mpg on a very flat highway, but I average about 22.5 mpg in my city driving. My new 2018 Ioniq hybrid is getting about 58 mpg under the same city driving conditions, which include some hill climbing.

Regarding this Hybrid, I live in Las Vegas, NV, and it gets really hot here in the summer up to 120 degrees sometimes. Well, my question is, Will the hybrid battery last through the high heat and will it still run? If I can get an answer to this, it would be really helpful because i'm thinking of buying one but, have not had a hybrid yet. This would be my first one, once I decide on what Hyundai vehicle to buy.
I bought this car , still waiting the delivery. I was told from seller that battery works well with high temperature than low. So it ahould cosume less gasoline in the summer.
