  • Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) is a Sam Raimi movie that has had a lot of bad press but given the Wicked trailer just dropped, I thought it a good time to visit this one and determine its quality retrospectively.

Wicked used a ton of practical sets mixed with some cgi you can check it out but I agree that the low saturation can make it look washed out but I feel it's because they were going for a more pastel & soft palette

It’s a shame the film is so uneven because everything with the China Girl is top tier, especially when Oscar helps her walk again and she begs him to let her tag along. Also, Disney had plans to build their own Oz (designed by the guy behind Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, and Star Tours) where Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland is now but this movie wasn’t as successful as they had hoped

      Yes.
I know it isn't Disney (Well i guess it is now 😂) but i watched Daredevil (the 2003 movie) the other day with my Girlfriend and she hadn't seen the movie before so i said to her "By the way it isn't the good, so don't go in expecting the Netflix series", so she did lower expectations and weirldy when the mocie finished we both said "That wasn't that bad" and she said that she was expecting to be a lot worse because i warned her. 😅
And even yesterday i was speaking to someone about it who was a adult when the mocie came out and said that he wasn't a fan of it then, but now it's definitely grown on him.
And that has seemed to happen with a lot of movies that when originally released wasn't well received, but now are seem as alright if not pretty good movies.
Like people speak highly of Spider-man 3, The Star Wars Prequels, even some of the weaker MCU movies like Thor 2, Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.
And even myself would argee that they aren't as bad as people used to say they were.
Basically the Bad Movies of 20 years ago are the good movies of Today and the good movies of 20 years ago are considered great movies today and the great movies of 20 years ago... god i have no idea where they fucked off to? 😂😂😂

Hmm this is an odd take, Oz the great and powerful has a completely different tone (story wise) so it makes sense that they’d be different. Oz the great and powerful is quite a juvenile story so it makes sense that the colours would be bright and unrealistic, to attract younger viewers. Wicked however, especially if they’re pulling more from the source material is darker and more grounded in real life. So it makes sense that it wouldn’t be garishly bright and colourful. Let’s not get into the writing and character development in OTGAP, that would be another argument 😂

@@Andyfierd In my opinion it comes across as slightly misogynistic. The original Oz books are very female led, most of the key power players are women and I feel like this film glosses over that to make them all revolve around Francos character. Like are you really telling me The wicked Witch of the West (one of the most iconic villains in movie history) is wicked because she was scorned by a man? Please 😂 The source material is there and in the public domain, why didn’t the writers pull more from that? So much missed potential, especially with Michelle Williams and Rachel Weiz as cast!

I don’t agree. Wicked does use practical sets and effects. It just has a more pastel color palette. I don’t think it looks lacking in personality at all. It has a lot of excessive grandiose detail, but I think there’s a decent thematic reason for that. I’m hoping part 2 will have darker, richer tones since the second act is much more grim.
The Oz movies look ok. I never thought they were ugly, aside from maybe some of the costuming and some over saturation at times. I certainly don’t think that they are everything missing from modern cinema, as they’re pretty much just another attempt to bank on nostalgia with a mediocre origin story.

This movie is one of my favorites. Although the acting could have been much better and a few improvements could've been made to make this movie "greater and more powerful", it's a generally good movie to watch. It flashes back to the classic "Wizard of Oz" in the 1900s while also picking up pieces from the book (ex. China Country). There are twists to the story in this movie, the action scenes captivates your attention, and there is character development (if putting the dryness aside. Ex. Theodora's downfall).

I saw the original script for this movie and Oz is actually more likable than this version, here is main differences between the original and final scripts:
    - When Oz arrived in Oz, he is greeted by the Winkie, just like how Dorothy greeted by the Munchkin. Theodora then came riding her winged monkeys just like Glinda with her bubbles. Through the journey, she is guided by two Winged Monkeys, Kala and Nikko.
    - Fuddles, Hammerheads, Miss Cuttenclips and her paper soldier make appearances when Glinda introduced Oz to the people of Oz. On the enemy side, The Nomes, Growleywogs, and Whimsies also appeared, and they are said to originate from outside of Oz, possibly the Land of Ev since that how it is in the book, the land of Nomes also in the land of Ev like in the book. This is might be why the choose "Evanora" as the name for the Wicked Witch of the East, since the Kingdom of Ev monarch's name all started with Ev (Evoldo, Evna. etc.) In Return to Oz, Dorothy actually visit this place. Evanora bring her army of Nomes, Growleywogs, and Whimsies by digging a tunnel so they can cross the deadly desserts. This is taken from the book The Emerald City of Oz. In face, many element from the original script is taken from that book.
    - China Girl did not appeared but people from Dainty China Country are present
-Horse of Different Color make appearances as Oz's steed when they went to the battlefield. They were refered as Horse of Different Color, they dropped this possibly to avoid copyright from 1939 movie.
    - Theodora become a Wicked Witch much latter than in the movie because she has a doubt about her sister and she tried her best to fight her Wickedness. It was not just she thought Oz betrayed her but because Evanora force her ( she grabbed her hair and force her to make decision because she need it to defeat Glinda)
    - Oz is less womanized, in the movie she flirt with many woman and give them same music box. In the original script, the three woman he seduced merge into one character named "Margaret Hamilton". She is a composite of Annie Gale, May, and the wife of another circus member whose husband tried to kill OZ after he found out about the affair. He talked to her about his dreams like he did to Annie Gale in the final and it seems serious rather than a fling. He did not use the music box at all. The second one is Theodora but that is because he is swayed by the mood. Oz introduced all his magical trick to Theodora including the Music Box (this is the first time he use it compare to the movie where he use it with different woman). He also didnt kiss Theodora. She step back before going to far under the guise of finding more fire woods for the campfire. After she left, Oz said something to himself like this: "Innocent girl like that? You oughta be ashamed of yourself."
    - The identity of The Cowardly Lion: when Theodora fetch fire woods, she contact her sister and she want to prove if she was truly a wizard. He took a rabbit and change it into a lion and use that to attack Oz. After he succesfuly drove it away, she peak from the tree and said "satisfied, sis?" She is way cooler. Mind you that unlike in the movie, Theodora and Oz are not couple yet. Both of them never confess, Theodora never realized her feeling or admit it hence she never asked Oz for her to be his queen. Though she secretly does has a crush on him.
    - The reason Theodora turned Wicked: in the movie, its more because of the love triangle. In the script, its because he is trying to kill her, or at least that is what Evanora want her to think. (note: in this version, Oz also never flirt with Evanora at all nor the latter trying to use that to lie to Theodora). During the scene in the room full of money, Evanora asked Oz if he want the gold, he need to kill the Wicked Witches (as in more than one). Oz was confused at first, but Evanora said the second wicked witches is Theodora. She gave him a knife and disappeared. Oz ran as fast as he can to warn Theodora in her room. He tried to escape with her. Both before he can finish his sentence, Evanora appeared and use here telekinesis to knock him out and then throw him to prison. She said to Theodora that Oz is a fake wizard and tried to kill both of them.
    - Theodora suspect her sister might be lying and she too has a bit of suspicion toward Evanora. So she write a letter to Oz and gave it to one of her monkeys, Kala, along with the key of his cell. Oz however already free himself through his own trick and then bump into Kala. Kala helped Oz escape. However, he dropped the letter from Theodora.
    - Finley is replaced with Kala.
    - When Glinda and Oz talk about striking back, Oz ask Glinda about Theodora, hoping they can bring her to their side. He care for her more in this version, although not romantically.
    - Glinda use the bubble more frequently.
    - Another element from the book that appear in the movies is the leaf that let you walk on the water from the Valley of Voe from "Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz" and Ripple Land also appear as well.
    - Oz never flirt with Glinda until the very end where he try to kiss her but she warned him than he will died if he do it.
    - Glinda offer him to go home but he choose to stay because he can make a difference here that at home (like a true isekai protagonist). And he said "There's no place like Oz".
    - While Mr. Tinker did not appeared, There are character called Master Elf who owned the company Smith & Tinker, it appeared on the book. The company operate by elves, like Santa Claus workshop.
There is more so i suggest you check it yourself: thescriptlab.com/wp-content/uploads/scripts/OZ-THE-GREAT-AND-POWERFUL.pdf
The original script might not be perfect and def need more polished. But i think it has a lot of things they can use that can make the final product much better.

I hear they’re making a reimagining of Wizard of Oz to follow up but I would do another chapter before that. Oscar establishing himself as the wizard. The ruby slippers could be put into play here for a way to Evanora to restore her powers and seek revenge on Glinda and Oscar. Evanora tries to reconcile with Theodora and recruit her. Theodora agrees but it is all a ploy so that when Evanora fails, she’ll get the ruby slippers. After a battle, it seems Evanora is about to win. That’s when Dorothy’s house falls on her and kills her. Roll credits. Then a remake of the original to wrap up a trilogy.

    • @willmassey5991
      @willmassey5991 5 месяцев назад

Also, due to Evanora’s new found powers, and Theodora’s rage towards Oscar; they somehow manage to break his spirit. Due to that, he and Glinda have a falling out and go their separate ways. After that he hides away in the emerald city and goes back to being the coward he was before. Hence it would make sense why he is the way he is, and hears of Dorothy killing Evanora and that’s what makes him give the task of Dorothy killing Theodora.

    • @willmassey5991
      @willmassey5991 5 месяцев назад

I keep brainstorming. One last thing, due to the sisters wreaking havoc in Oz, breaking Oscar and their relationship ending and Oscar abandoning her; Glinda becomes slightly bitter and jaded underneath her normal demeanor. So when she sees Dorothy arrive in Oz by unintentionally killing Evanora, she sees an opportunity to manipulate Dorothy into going to the Emerald City to see Oscar and from there kill Theodora. Glinda ultimately will win. With the sisters both dead, she gets revenge for her father and for them playing a part in her and Oscar’s relationship falling apart. Last but not least getting revenge on Oscar by getting him exposed, but in doing so helps him find who he was and realizing it’s time to find a way home.
