When you said why wasnt the wicked witch of the east wearing the ruby slippers I was also wondering that too but then I remembered that Wizard of Oz originally had silver slippers because that was a detail in the book that I remembered and when you see the wicked witch of the East flying off being carried away by her flying monkeys you get a glimpse of like a silvery shiny thing at the Witches feet, or what I thought so, so I’m assuming they went the silver slippers route for that little detail

    • @kp22kc
      @kp22kc 2 года назад +1

I know this is from a year ago but...my theory was that Evanora's power came from the emerald that was destroyed....Theodora wore a ruby ring and maybe she made the slippers from that source to give her sister powers again. So of course she wants the slippers back after Evanora was killed. Maybe they would have explored that if there had been sequels leading up to The Wizard of Oz.

Since this film made by Disney couldn't use the rights to the 1939 musical wizard of oz they couldnt use the ruby slippers or even the wicked witch of the west shade of green
So the only reason this film was made is based off many of the original children novels because they are in the public domain while the 1939 wizard of oz is still copyrighted

@@rachelremeny If you decide to watch this movie again, try to visualize it in 3-D... 3-D is most effective when used for depth (i.e. Avatar), but in this movie, the illusion of things extending off the screen (especially near the beginning, with the reduced aspect ratio, where elements may briefly extend off to the sides) is used particularly well... If memory serves, there was an animated short that accompanied this film... A Micky Mouse cartoon called 'Get a Horse' that also played well in 3-D...
As to why no one talks about it... My guess would be that there wasn't money to be made via franchising (as it was a stand-alone movie, and a prequel to a movie made by another studio decades prior), or marketing... I saw this movie in theaters. So happy that I did. The colors and motion during the film made this a great OZ experience. Being an avid wizard of Oz reader this movie is my favorite interpretation of the world of Oz. Highly recommend. Wishing we had more pure authentic representation of Oz.
Legitimate things, from the series that is in this film. The Wizard is from Kansas and arrived in a balloon. (He was not a magician at the carnival, he was a balloon operator.) Glinda is indeed the Good witch of the south and Queen of the Quadlings( in the book they all wear red, and are short with long extending necks.) and the most powerful witch/sorceress in OZ. Other than that, Disney has made the story up from their own plot. the porcelain city-when Dorthy and her comrades go to see Ginda in the south kingdom they travel through a miniature city made of Porcelain,(when these citizens leave their city they turn inanimate.)
What isn't aligned with Oz by Baum: 1. Glinda and the Wizard are not lovers. (Glinda is questing to find the lost princess of Oz whose fathers kingdom was taken by the wizard, and wishes to restore her to the throne of the emerald city. 2. The flying monkies can only be summoned three times by the wearer of the Golden cap and its incantation. They are not the Winkies (Yellow Clothing wearing skilled craftsman and salves to the wicked witch of the west) nor citizens of the Wicked Witch of the Wests territory.
This movie compared to the Broadway show Wicked: Both shows alter and take creative license with the concept of the four witches in the kingdoms of Oz, and challenge the viewers perception of the witches.
FUN FACT: Elphaba is the name of the "Wicked Witch of the West" in the broadway show wicked. She is not titled by this in any other Oz universes. Her name was inspired by the author of the book Series. L. FrAnk BAUm.

It's hard to believe that this is the same guy who did the Evil Dead films and the original Spider-Man trilogy, and who is about to release Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Sam Raimi has a unique, interesting style.

I also find tornados disturbing and unsettling. While they do wreck havoc, like other natural disasters, the particular form a tornado takes, which is very identifiable, unlike most natural disasters, further makes it eery, yet somewhat mesmorising, like a flame. Which is why the poster of the 1996 disaster film, Twister, still creeps me out. The film itself, not so much.

3:40 If you haven’t seen them yet, Rachel Weisz is excellent in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. Also, her last name is pronounced “Vice”.
11:00 I live in Illinois, so tornadoes are my most feared natural disasters too.
13:30 There’s a TV show called Pushing Daisies that has a similar look. The concept is WILDLY different, but the environments look a lot like Oz in this movie.
19:05 They’re probably ancestors of the horse that changed colors from the original 1939 movie.
29:55 A pun has not completely matured until it is full groan.
33:40 It is a very good movie, but it’s not part of the same canon as Wicked and I think that did, as you said, piss a lot of people off. So people who are fans of Wicked hate this movie. I’ve never seen Wicked (though I do know Defying Gravity from Glee), so I don’t have anything to compare this to.

I remembered when this came out lol. And u thought it looked so good. Good cast. Couldn't wait to see it cause I like wizard of oz. Don't love it but I like the story and characters AND the world of oz. Obviously when they making sequels or prequels that obviously confirms that oz is a real place not a dream. They originally had a trilogy planned but I don't think this one did that great but I really liked this. This looked so good. Love how they kept the black and white then color like original did. We already know what's going to happen but I still like how the characters in real world then when he goes to oz the characters there are so!liar if nor same and especially the same actors. Yeah its always Bern black and white. Yeah that's joey king lol. I haven't read the wicked book or the oz books but I'm looking them up on RUclips to find out more about them. I wonder what the other movies would have Bern about. This one clears up most of everything from original except maybe the slippers don't never see her wearing them lol. I liked that too. We didn't get to see her in original except her feet this one Rachel did great I thought. James did great as the wizard. Mila did awesome as wicked witch. It sucks when she becomes wicked. I'm like don't listen to her. All this would have been cleared up by communication but she believes her eats apple that's messed up but she looks cool as witch. Still almost attractive still but that's Mila I think and they showing more skin in costume in this one than original lol. But the laughing and fireballs looked so cool. I just researched this last night and was like this is awesome. Throughout it I was comparing the land of oz to the island on lost. Like hoe you get there involves a storm or you have to crash there. Both has lots of plants so beautiful compared to real world lol. There's so many beautiful movies like avatar and ones you mentioned but .Maybe it takes a lot of money to make these and if they don't make enough back like this one. I don't know how much they made back but obviously wasn't enough cause they had a trilogy planned but that got cancelled. So sad kinda wished got to see what happens next but I'm wondering what else would have happened . Everyone did awesome on this lol

Also they used BLUE screen for the backgrounds, not green like you said. Why do people born in the 2000s always as a default assume everything was always green screen? The original name is Blue Screen. Green Screen wasn't used for DECADES until after blue. The first major movie production to use green was the phantom Menace. Whenever someone says a movie in the mid 90s or earlier was green screened it is a huge giveaway they weren't around. I know this isn't a 90s movie, but just letting you know if you react to a movie from the early 90s or earlier you should say blue screen, not green or it will make you sound ignorant of what you are talking about. I know it is a minor nitpick, bit it really gets on my nerves when people refer to early 90s or older as having green screen when they didn't. It was all blue. Blue gets no love these days!

Alright. Here’s a lot of things to debunk about your comparisons with this movie and _Wicked._
    1. The reason that Theodora is not named “Elphaba” is because Gregory Maguire’s _Wicked_ novels are given film rights exclusively to Universal, hence why this is its own timeline. Besides, Elphaba is **spoilers** the Wizard’s biological daughter.
    2. You can kind of tell who the witches are destined to be due to the contrasting color schemes: Evanora is in black and green (the colors one associates with the Witch of the West due to her black robes+hat and green skin (which was an original idea from the MGM movie musical)) while Theodora is in black, white and red (the colors one associates with the Witch of the East because of her striped socks and ruby slippers (which were ALSO an MGM original idea because they were originally silver)).
    3. Annie is, as some hints are dropped, Dorothy’s biological mother. You can tell because of Annie gingham-patterned frock and Annie herself said that she’s marrying John Gale. And Dorothy surname is “Gale.”
    4. “China Town” is actually place in the original book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. In the book, Dorothy and her companions travel southwards to Quadling country to ask Glinda for help (yes, Glinda is originally the Witch of the South, not North). On the way to see Glinda, they pass through “China Town” which was originally named “the Dainty China Country”. Everything there, from the people, to the animals, to even the houses, trees, and wagons were made of China. And the whole country was encased in a giant wall that’s shaped like a giant bowl.
    5. You can see some hints at Dorothy’s companions being dropped throughout the film. Some Quadlings build scarecrow decoys to remove the flying baboons out the fight in the poppy field, which very much hints at the Scarecrow. One tinker when they’re being introduced says “they can build anything” it hints at them building the Tin Man’s tin body (I don’t wanna talk about the Tin Man’s horrific backstory, so you’ll have to search it up yourself. P.S. one of the Tinkers is actually the grandson of Bert Lahr (the original Cowardly Lion)! Mindblown) And of course the Lion running away from the smoke. This could hint at said lion either being THE Cowardly Lion, or possibly being the Lion’s father. What it is, I have no idea…

If after the two years since you posted this nobody else has commented on your questions regarding the WWW's eyebrows, I'm happy to confirm that those are indeed not Mila Kunis's eyebrows. Though there are cosmetic tapes that when used with elastic cords that can give one's eyebrows a bit more height, the makeup department here blocked her natural brows using one of several possible methods. The most common of these is used by drag queens to conceal their brows and it involves using a regular Elmer's Glue Stick (the one that looks purple but dries clear). There are also medical grade adhesives used in a similar manner (most commonly Pro's Aide). Perhaps the least reliable of the methods I've used involves brow wax, a product available by many theatrical cosmetic companies (Ben Nye, Mehron, etc).
After the brows are laid flat to the skin and sealed into place with finishing powder, they then painted the more sinister-looking arches on her. If you're interested in learning more about these techniques, there are now countless tutorials widely available here on RUclips for each method or you're more than welcome to ask me any further questions here. I hope this answered your question! Again, my apologies if anyone else already explained elsewhere here in the comments.

If you're counting books & movies that have very little to do with the 12 Oz books by L. Frank Baum, then I suppose A Barnstormer in Oz is also canon? It's a great fantasy reimagining of Oz following Dorothy's son, a WWI pilot, as he finds himself in Oz with a biplane that now thinks & talks! Novel by Philip Jose Farmer.
The china village was introduced in one of the original Oz novels.
I'm a purist, so for me the definitive Oz is in Frank Baum's novels.
