Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking-that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well. When small-time magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) pulls one flimflam too many, he finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz where he must somehow transform himself into the great wizard-and just maybe into a better man as well. -- (C) Walt Disney

I loved this movie. They really tried to stay with the original concept and storyline to make a great Prequel. The best scene was when OZ lets loose his theatrical skills.
Even though I'm tired of the whole retelling beloved children's stories I'm kind of excited to see this. I love Raimi and the cast is really interesting.
I loved this movie to death. I was literally laughing during half of it in joy.
I think this movie also is a great example of what "mixed" actually means. It doesn't mean bad or average. It means that different reviewers gave it very different scores. If a movie gets 4 8/10s, 4 2/10s, 1 10/10, and 1 1/10, then a good 5 people thought the movie was really good
Nahh I think it’s terrible
Alonso is right. From the creative opening credits to spectacular finale I was hooked. Admittedly, some of the explanatory building blocks seem drawn out until their functions are revealed. Two scenes perplex me: (1) Michelle Williams appears as Em Gale, who'd later become Aunty Em in WofOZ. Oscar tells her "I'll see you in my dreams." Does this infer he too was dreaming his adventure to OZ? (2) When the apple was exchanged between the two witches. Beautiful movie.
i think James Franco made sense because of story telling. The character was doubtful of himself and unsure of his path in life. Franco was fitting due to his calm and reserved attitude in this.
I really enjoyed it, it reminded me of older disney where things could actually be scary for children, personally i thought it was better than most of the live action disney in the past few years.
I created an account just to say PLEASE go back to the unedited reviews. I enjoy the light banter that reveals all of your personalities and find you all likeable. PLEASE?
I've watched like 50 reviews from these guys so far. The only one they liked was MI:Ghost Protocol. I'm curious. Why are you movie critics if you don't like movies?
They are" critics " in the half full glass kind of way ... Nothing good enough for them . But they themselves wrapped up in their childhood past .
I know! Roger Ebert himself was nicer to movies!
New transition technique is a slight improvement but still can't help but wonder what was cut. Many of us just enjoy the conversation and wouldn't mind hearing them just chat, whether about the movie in question, or other related topics. Perhaps you could upload both the full version for us and the edited version for those who prefer to just focus on the review. Thanks.
why do you guys cut mid conversation. why not upload the full review?
Does it have any connections to Wicked?
Who was the first choice to play Oz if not Franco?
Despite the James Franco miscasting, this was movie magic for me. And I'm a grown man. I'd imagine kids would remember this as a special moment in their childhood. Rachel Weisz is extremely beautiful btw. Easily the most pretty of all the witches.
where can you find them?
"I don't read books" Christy makes everything better!
Ben, how could it have been the original groups idea to move from black and white to technicolor when L. Frank Baum wrote so in his book. He describes Kansas as grey multiple times and OZ as full of color and rich hues.
As a kid we would troop to whoever had a color TV to see the original. Loved it then, love it now.
As an older fantasy buff, I read the books, saw L Frank Baum's silent versions, and Return To Oz. Hated them all (Baums flicks were interesting as artifacts).
I've decided the only thing that made the original a classic was the genius of those involved. The art direction, the cast, the pacing, the music, the script; it's all perfect, and nothing will ever come close.
But I guess I have to see it.
How does Alfonso always calculate the new average so quickly? It's pretty impressive
Alonso actually likes it! Whoa! I screwed up not seeing Life of Pi in the theatre so I'm not going to miss this visual feast.
This movie was sooooooo awesome! How can you not like it? Mila Kunis was great, I seriously didn't see or heard Meg in her performance at all, She looked gorgeous and as her character progresses her performance gets better. James Franco was great in the movie he carried the character very well loved him in this movie. If you going to watch this movie you should watch it on 3D because it was amazing on 3D, in my experience. I can't wait to see it again!
I liked it and I recommend seeing it in 3D and I dont really like movies in 3D. What I don't get about this review is they complain about the characters but I think the execution is exactly what they meant to do. Mila Kunis did not sound like Meg when she got loud, I thought it was a great witch voice. Michelle Williams was excellently cast. The monkey and china girl were good too.
So the thing I'm confused about is how can this be a prequel to The Wizard Of Oz when in that movie, the land of Oz was all just a dream in Dorothy's head.
Surprised Ben didn't see this, since his grandfather was a screenwriter for The Wizard of OZ.
Wait if Oz is just Dorthy's dream then how is any of this possible?
Beware whenever Christy Lemire says "I don't want to give anything away" because she is about to give something away.
Can anyone really improve on the original? I'll have to see for myself.
Since Ben, routinely, does not watch the films being reviewed, they should just always play the game at the beginning of the show where Ben tries to guess what happens. That would be really entertaining.
Life of Pi did the 3D object out of the aspect ratio thing first, in case you guys missed it -_-
well as someone who grew up watching the Wizard of OZ more then I can Count - Im def. gonna see this!
The only way I can ever watch these videos is by scrubbing to the end to hear rating. Don't like spoilers
I have only seen the play I never read the novel, but indefinitely loved the play. When I saw how the Wicket Witch was turn into a Wicket Witch in the movie I was like "wait! this is not how it happened in Wicked" lol
they are going to make Wicked as a movie. I read an article about it, sorry I don't have the link for you it was a few months ago that I read it.
I would've loved to have seen RDJ's take on Oz!! Depp has played this type of role before, so it wouldn't be anything new for him as an actor.
great script and good acting. i didnt like the CGI overkill and the forced 3D. did the entire land of OZ have to be in CGI? it was basically a cartoon without the consistancy.
Problem with Franco makes me think that Heath Ledger would have been perfect because of his performance in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, it's a shame he's passed on.
I like the movie, but in the 2nd OZ movie Disney wants to do, they will prob have the silver slippers since that was the color in the book
just search the movie titel + review on youtube / google. or check IMDB etc. if you want text form. however 5 min reviews are pretty useless in most cases...
I loved this movie so much!
agreed; the china doll was a heart-tugger
All of the original Baum books are public domain. Just FYI.
Really? I thought James Franco was great as Oz. He has this kinda smug charm to him which is what was required for the character.
3 witches?.....should be 4: north, south, east, and west.....what happened to the fourth one?
Ah.. its on Netflix if you've got it. Only has one or two seasons so shouldn't be a time hog if you're eer compelled to check it out.
I love Alonzo's Sweater!!
I liked it. I agree with the meg voice problem. loved the cg.
There is a statistic out there that says most RUclips viewers click off after the 5 minute mark, so in order to accommodate that, they changed to shorter videos. Of course this kinda sucks because most viewers of WTF like listening to the rambled conversations because there we have the most insight in the Movie industry. Apparently they don't share the same view with WTF fans.
this movie starts with such promise yet slowing worsens after oz comes out of the lake ... peace my ninjas
You are correct. Thank you.
Alonso finally likes a movie and no one else seems to like it. Bad luck Alonso.
no problem!
The only problem I had with the movie was the acting. It was just horrible. Too over the top, forced, and weren't into their characters enough to even TRY and mean what they're saying.
Maybe because Franco always looks stoned, bored, tired, and sleepy.
It was okay. I was SO excited about it but it left a bad taste in my mouth. I do like how the characters evolve.
I thought this is Franco's second best work as an actor besides 127 Hours. I felt there was more depth to his character and had a great arc. My complain were the witches. Williams was boring, and Kunis is shockingly flat, and Weisz was just average Joe.
Ever since "Spider-Man 3," for some reason (or more) I think Franco is a terrible actor, he just seemed to give up. Was great in Spidey 2 but these days he seems to approach things differently. "This Is the End" could be good though, maybe comedy is best for him.
If Ben didn't have his Ipad on the set, his review would have been pretty much like Spring Breakers... nothing!
nah....it's the other good one that's missing - Glinda's counterpart- the Good Witch of the South. Only east and west are evil ....East gets a house dropped on her, West becomes the green gal we know....
I enjoyed it on a "definitely watchable" level but there's nothing fantastic about this film.
You see, I can be a critic too! 0_o
I loved this movie!!!!!!! I saw it 10 times in the movies I love Mila Kunis!!!!!!!
AHH… The silent Ben… No surprise there!
Everyone likes movie, Alonzo hates it.
Everyone hates movie, Alonzo likes it.
I didn't like the movie. I think kids would enjoy it more than adults. The 3D was okay I guess, the part when he first gets into Oz was the best, everything else was meh in terms of 3D. I also agree about James Franco, he didn't convince me at all. I normally like him in movies but this wasn't the case.
Oscar talk?
GUYS, EVERYONE IS COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CUT REVIEWS. LISTEN TO YOUR AUDIENCE!!!!!
Never seen it. I don't think that show ever really made it abroad, and i live abroad:-)
Joey King, Yes the talking China Doll, JOEY KING was the best actress/actor of the movie!!!!!!!
Oh my. That's great you think was good in something. Thank you for letting me know, but i disagree though.
Don't edit. it ruins what makes these reviews great in the first place!
i didnt care for all the smartalick humor either.. it felt like they were trying too hard to be funny/fresh/new and hip...it was like when your parents embarass your in front of your friends when you're a teen by trying to keep up with the times
I thought this movie was ridiculous and unnecessary.... the original Wizard of Oz actors were more effective.... this movie was TRAGICALLY mis-cast and the effects looked campy. If I were on that board I would have given it a 4
James Franco is in every damn movie!
Good comment, my good sir.
Christoph Waltz would have been awesome as Oz.
i really disarree that it was smarter i had some great ponuial but it does not go far sadely
127 Hours was the only movie I even like him in...
NO MORE CUTS.
I'm not really. And i most likely won't like Franco in it. The dude has no charisma at all and his acting chops are limited today, i can only imagine how bad it must have been back in the 90's.
I'm waiting for the director's cut, OF THIS "OZ" REVIEW, cus this studio cut is poorly edited and undercuts the reviewer's opinions.
Absolutely loved this movie!
The film had some nice movements in the plot, but the dialogue was obviously written by a 10 year old. It had almost no poetry to it, no cadence like people from the turn of last century talked. It was just the actors trying to put on slightly formal English accents to halting, purely functional chatter.
Oh and lots of cheap 'loud-noise' scares. But hey, it was pretty I guess.
Spring Break Forever
agreed.
Christy
I think James Franco gets miscast alot, I liked him in Rise of the Planet of the Apes but I didn't love him, any number of people would have been better, I just can't buy him as a genius scientist after seeing him in Pineapple Express and movies like it. I don't think he has the range that other people think he does, he belongs in comedy in my opinion.
Omg....Alonso liked a movie!
I know...it's seriously annoying. They've only just started doing it in the last few weeks.
Go back into the WTF archives from 2-3 years ago...reviews were routinely 10-15 minutes long.
I miss those days...why not have long, drawn-out reviews where everyone just sits around bullshitting? No need to rush, guys.
i love wicked!
At least it is not a remake.
Alonso, the fact that you think this is good and Les Miserables is bad, you have no taste as a critic.
modern criticism has evolved into a bunch of people with their opinions.
If people wanted a short 5 min review they would not watch this show. go back to the longer uncut talks.
I hope we're not preaching to the choir about this.
Half in the Bag > WhatTheFlick?!
It's just the magic of Oz...
I hate Oz.
Good old Alonso
I really liked the movie.
I haven't seen the movie, but I do hate the cast. I hate the girl who plays Megan's voice in family guy and hated her because she was in Ted. Horrible cast hopefully I change my mind after I see it
Loved the Movie..!
A NINE?? Wow -- I went with two friends and we all HATED this movie on so many levels. The acting was embarrassing, the demeaning attitudes toward women was ridic, the casting made no sense, the CGI was unintentionally hilarious (people were howling at how awful it was). I give this movie a 4/10.
I totally want to see this movie amd this review didn't detour my excitement to watch it. Plus why is Christy a film critic?!! She never likes any movies. If every time she watches a movie she comments bad things maybe change professions sweetie
