The F-5 was introduced during the Vietnam War. It didn’t carry enough ground ordinance compared to the F-4, F-105, A-6, and A-7. Also compared to a Mig-21, in a dog fight, the F-5 was agile, but the engines were something under powered and if the F-5 lost energy, the only way to recover was to dive. Oddly the F-5 was leased to the South Vietnamese AF. Also the U.S. Navy Top Gum school I believe use the F-5 as aggressor aircraft.
@@peterresetz1960 The f 5 didn't need to carry ground ordinance, it was an interceptor. As to the engines, had the US adopted the plane the engines would have been upgraded, just like we fix deficiencies in all the airframes we use. Then we'd festooned it with bombs, like we do the f15s. But even if we couldn't, only about 23 percent of enemy pilots downed were as a result of guns. The rest were downed by missiles and a super agile plane that is slightly underpowered is a good fit for that. Just keep the nose on target to guide the missile. No, nothing wrong with the F 5 that some tlc couldn't fix. There's a reason they are only now being retired. Cheap, rugged, agile, fast, and easy to fly, the f 5 was an amazing plane for its time.

Not in engine performance no, but retrofitted F-5s have the radar and missiles to still pose a big threat, especially in the mountains.
It's roll dependent. For the price, they are great for smaller poor nations facing older planes. Against a modern airfare or air defense, no.
