yesss la la land. before I wasn't really a particularly a big fan of the big box office movies either but after my friend dragged me to go see it I fell in love with the plot and the cinematography and everything!
A really good graphic novel is The best we could do by thi bui! It’s the story of her parents’ history in Vietnam from childhood to immigration to America
Journey of the Fall is a great movie that portrays what it was like after the war/Fall of Saigon! It’s beautifully filmed and the storyline is unforgettable. It’s one of my favorite movies and it helped me learned more about my parents because my dad was one of the boat people/refugees too. Definitely recommend you watch it!!
as a underrepresented asian ethnic group, I highly recommend The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir by Kao Kalia Yang. It touches on the Vietnam war, the refugee camps in Thailand, & about transition life in America as an immigrant. You’ll appreciate this book as it has its own life, feelings, and memories from the author herself.
as a daughter of 2 refugees from the Vietnam War, definitely watch the Ken Burns documentary series on the Vietnam War! it aired on PBS and i'm not sure where you can see it now, but it was very educational because it showed different perspectives of the war. and of course Ken Burns, so it was done incredibly well.
I usually don’t comment but I have to recommend this documentary: The 13th. It’s enlightening in so many ways, it was directed by Ava DuVernay. I love your videos,( and your eye makeup is on point every single time 🤩)!
omg i was up all night waiting for this and fell asleep before u uploaded so i was sad but im glad you enjoyed your trip!! seeing this now made me so happy i needed my weekly amy talk to lighten up my mood haha
Vietnamerica and The Best We Could Do are both AMAZING graphic novels about Vietnam and being an immigrant! I read them in my Asian American class in college -- Love you
same sentiments! i could focus a little more on movies but i often spend forever before i do decide to watch it because i feel like it's such a commitment! lol it's so long. usually more fun to watch with people. but anyway, i don't know if you'll like it but i really liked the dior documentary (the one about raf simons' first dior show) and nina simone (this one though is reaaaaally long). pls do suggest more documentaries if you've watched any :) also i switched from waxing to threading cos it takes longer to grow back
Omg Amy! Thanks for committing to doing the AM with Amy series on Mondays! I honestly thought I wasn’t gonna get a video from you today, and you surprised me ~ I don’t care if it’s 11:12pm in Canada, I’m still watching it anyway!!! Thank you, love! Hope you recover from jetlag!
I totally recommend 'Hip Hop Revolution' on Netflix! It's a doc series that goes through the history of hip hop from its beginnings in disco/punk underground in the 70's!
I don't know why I never got around to watching any of the videos from this series (even though it's so popular amongst the viewers) but I gotta say I've been missing out. Time to binge ;)
It's not really about Vietnam as a whole but I recommend Anh Do's biography 'The Happiest Refugee'. He's an Australian comedian whose parents went through the Vietnam War. He was a part of it too but just a baby. You could probably read it in one day or something, it's enjoyable to read but naturally has sad moments as well.
Hey Amy! I love love love your AM with Amy videos so much. I recommend the book The Happiest Refugee by Anh Do because it's entertaining, informative on Vietnamese culture and also super relatable. C:
I recommend "First They Killed My Father" on Netflix, if you haven't seen it yet! I read the book in middle school and was so excited to see that Angelina Jolie directed the movie that based on a book by Loung Ung who tells her story of the Khmer Rouge, becoming a child soldier, and her amazing relationship with her family. I loved the book and was so impressed by the movie, please watch it!
If you're interested in learning more about Vietnamese history/culture, I recommend The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen! It's historical fiction but it addresses a lot of the war in Vietnam.
I used to get my eyebrows waxed, but then couldn't get an appointment with my eyebrow girl before leaving for Canada. When I got to Canada, I got my brows waxed in a mall and it was the best eyebrow job I had ever had in my entire life. When I went back to Florida, I found a threader close to home and it was really sub-par. Went back to waxing.
Journey from the Fall (on DVD only, unsure if you can rent...); Birds of Paradise Lost by Andrew Lam is an emotional rollercoaster that gives you a look into both the old Vietnam and an immigrant's experience being a Vietnamese-American Both more immigration/boat people related but are really profound culture-wise and have historical significance!
I've gotten my eyebrows threaded for maybe 10 years now, and my hair growth has drastically decreased. So I think that over time, threading does actually kill the follicle.
ooh you should watch First They Killed My Father on netflix if you havent yet! it's not Vietnam but Cambodia is a neighbor :) my mom said it was pretty accurate even though it's not a documentary!
Hi Amy, I work as a receptionist in a spa where we do both threading and waxing. As far as the difference between the two go threading is definitely way more gentle than waxing is. When you wax you run the risk of damaging your hair folicule and skin as it is more traumatizing on the skin - especially if the person doesn't have the right training. This can also be caused by the wax that they use, there are hard waxes which are meant for things like leg waxing and then there are soft waxes that are meant for waxing things like eyebrows. I would highly recommend threading over waxing to anyone!
Wicked and Phantom are touristy Broadway shows though! There are other musicals on Broadway and even on the West End that I'm sure will change your mind about them.
Hi! Just catching up since I just got back from a trip too haha. Since you're interested in culture and history, I wanna recommend a book called The Latinos of Asia. It's such a good book to learn about how historical colonization can really impact a culture's identity development. It's about Filipino Americans, and even more specifically, Fil-Ams in LA. In case you're interested :)
So I actually hand pluck my eyebrows which is a lot of work but it's cheap! Haha And I'm actually very into swing dance and the one documentary I'd recommend on that is called Alive and Kicking on Netflix!
Podcast: Mogul: The Life and Death of Chris Lightly Netflix: Hip-Hop Evolution and The Get Down Poster: www.wearedorothy.com/products/hip-hop-love-blueprint-a-history-of-hip-hop
I've had my eyebrows waxed since I was 14 (I'm 21 now) and they've never stopped growing (idk if being Latina has anything to do with it) but also I don't do it very often Love you Amy 💖
If you haven't already I really recommend watching the documentary 13th, it's not about rap but it's really enlightening about how the US has come to its current disenfranchisement of black Americans
If you haven’t already for sure check out the film apocalypse now. It’s such a classic and a very beautiful and confronting depiction of the Vietnam war (from an American perspective)
I love ur am with amy and i wish u can talk about how to become stronger emotianly i start to stress so much lately and break down everytime a problem is hard to solve... i don't know if anybody ever feel the same... i used to be much stronger in the past but every bad experience took a little bit of my strenght until i become soo weak.. how somebody can rebuild his fighting spirit ...i really dkw 😓
girl i always get my eyebrows threaded but they leave small bumps around the area :(( and that just makes me not want to do it but my fleeky brows give me so much confidence
I just watched a french documentary of women during wwI and it was very eye opening on how nations manipulate the population and very inspiring for women, i don't remember the name it starts with elle but really good and it's on Netflix 👌🏻
threading all the way. you should also check out Hiroshima Diary by Michihiko Hachiya, which is suuuuper depressing but a real life Japanese physician's experience on the atomic bombings in '68.
Have you read Sapiens or Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari? If not, I highly recommend it! Homo Deus in particular gives you an interesting view of what society could possibly become in the future, and Sapiens gives you a good grasp of the past on the history of humans. 😊
I use to wax my eyebrows when I was younger but I learned that the waxing can cause your skin to sag down the line because of all the pulling so I only thread them. This might now be 100% true but it makes sense to me (:
Please try the new Solution by Glossier! The reviews sound great but im afraid to use such a strong toner/ solution on my skin. I want to hear what you have to say.
You should check out Vox’s ear worm video series. It’s a variety of 7-10min videos that dissects music. From what I’ve seen, they discuss the rap methods artists use (from Kendrick to Mos Def to Eminem etc) and looks deeper into techniques and history of hip hop (like New Orleans bounce and how the Migos type of flow has existed before the trio). I really enjoy hip hop too lol or really any info about subcultures. Check out Hip Hop Evolution on Netflix too
Also in one of the vox videos they mention a RUclips channel who discusses hip hop trends and news. I forgot the name of the video but it was released last week
Here's a really awesome video by Vox on the art of rap (one of my favorite RUclips vids tbh): ruclips.net/video/QWveXdj6oZU/видео.html They've got other really great stuff that deconstructs certain styles, overarching themes, etc. on rap and hip hop. There's also a great documentary series on Netflix called "Hip Hop Evolution", and it touches on the roots of hip hop/rap, and the last episode focuses on NWA
EDIT: By not glamorous I meant lots of flights and we stayed primarily in hostels! :D but def the way to go haha

Watch The Get Down on Netflix! It's about the early days of rap in the Bronx in the 70s.
as a underrepresented asian ethnic group, I highly recommend The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir by Kao Kalia Yang. It touches on the Vietnam war, the refugee camps in Thailand, & about transition life in America as an immigrant. You’ll appreciate this book as it has its own life, feelings, and memories from the author herself.
Freshly Dressed is a dope documentary on how hip hop influenced fashion and played such a big role in birthing street style
as a daughter of 2 refugees from the Vietnam War, definitely watch the Ken Burns documentary series on the Vietnam War! it aired on PBS and i'm not sure where you can see it now, but it was very educational because it showed different perspectives of the war. and of course Ken Burns, so it was done incredibly well.
