Taking a file(s) to the G and B string nut space is all well and good. Filing the nut slots is not something I would be comfortable in doing in all honesty.
But the angle of strings is still the same.
Top wrapping may lessen the break angle at the bridge, but, you still have the break angle of the strings at the nut-Since I'm hesitant to file the nut like you did-I have used the Tune Voodoo string spacer as well as the Lightning Guitar tailpiece.
Vaseline, Nut Sauce or even graphite from a pencil when string change out comes, is always a good idea. Watching this video has given me a little bit of confidence to attempt this anyways.
Great video as always. Thank you!!
Thanks for the addition and checking it out!
Got the same files. Glad to have them to make good guitars great
Always lubricate your nut slots with a little Vaseline it helps the strings slide in the slots.
Thanks, Steve! It has alwasys mystified me why so little attention is placed on the quality of the nut and the filing of it. It's so vital to have right as you demonstrated. 👍
Nowadays I think they use graphtech on the new ones. Much less fuss and easier to get out the door. Thanks for checking it out
Good advice! Thanks Steve 😊 love les paul's!
Despite their quirks, they're the best
I had my standard set for 11s and use 10s. Put lubricant on the nut, wind the g string backwards top to bottom , same with the d and it’s been aces.
Beautiful Gibson
My current favorite! Thanks
Yup. Same binding issue with the Epiphone Dot. (Of course, the nut on an Epi is lower quality than that of a Gibson.) Anyway, thanks for the great advice!
my epiphone dot was fine no problems out the box my gibson however wont stay in tune for one song its driving me crazy
Great job Steve - I've bought / sold many LP's and it's always been like you've said the G or D... I recently purchased a 2008 SG where this guitar stays in tune! I then went and bought a stack of lottery tickets...
The new ones come stock with graphtech nuts! Solves the problem instantly
@@SteveSterlacci - Right on!
@@SteveSterlacciJust bought a brand new Gibson SG standard and it won't stay in tune to save my soul. To be fair I'm not a guitar player, but have always wanted an SG. D and G keep losing their tune. Also noticed I can physically push the neck pickup into the guitar with a light press but not the bridge pickup. Really frustrating because now I have to figure out if this guitar is even worth keeping and it's hard to find others like it in stock (it's a Junk Center Gibson SG Standard Silverburst with an Ebony Fretboard). I'm scared they used this thing as a baseball bat lol... I really love the guitar though and want to get it right
@waynebrucemanbat5787 I'd keep the guitar and take it to a real luthier for a set up. May run you like 80 bucks but itll be worth it for a good one
@@SteveSterlacci thanks! My buddy is gonna take a look at it but I found a shop in my town that apparently a lot of players from Chicago drive all the way out to for their guitar work so I'm thinking that's the way the go.
👏👏👏
YA
I use a string butler and my Les Pauls never go out of tune while playing.
i have had many gibson lp's and es 335's and maybe i got lucky but they all stayed in tune pretty well , so yeah .
You have good luck with nuts then my friend!
@@SteveSterlacci yes , that might be because i am nuts too : )
@@antoonhermans8953 😅😅😅
Thanks for the tip. Tried the "String Butler" a few years ago. Didn't work. New nut did it.
Its always the nut!
“Steve from the future” was holding a LP with Kluson tuners…I assumed you did the change? And do you find Kluson tuners make a difference?
I just wanted the aesthetic. Made no difference otherwise!
@@SteveSterlacci Absolutely looks better with Kulson’s 👍
I was only able to solve this eventually getting an es335 with an Evertune bridge
Evertunes are too intrusive and I think overkill. A graphtech nut is easiest!
Evertunes shine in the studio when you have to tune after each take. Live they are also perfect for outdoor gigs in humid NJ/NY. Not an evertune salesman but they do serve their purpose@@SteveSterlacci
Came for the content, stayed for the beard.
I made it myself
I bought an Ibanez with the opposite problem. The A string slot is cut too low ! Otherwise, the gtr is great.
Low-cut nuts are the worst!!!
Never any tuning problems with my Reverend guitars. Have a nice day!
Thats funny, cuz I just changed the strings on a 2023 studio, and under the strings the nut looked horrible. It had like little ridges underneath the string. Theres no way the string goes through it smoothly. I left it, cuz it plays so good I didnt want to drop the string closer to the fret board. I put a little graphite from a pencil to help it not bind. Common gibson dont give people a busted nut. Horrible.
General nutty thoughts...
Why nut a zero fret?
Why nut a bone nut or Tusq nut on all guitars? $5-15 maximum. (A pretty cheap sign of quality.)
Why nut a roller nut?
lucky that i never buy a gibson guitar in my life . If I have to buy a lp style guitar definitely maybach lester
That's not luck, bro. You are just missing out. Some of the greatest players in the world have played Gibson's - including the greatest of them all, Mr. Lester Paul!
Life without a good Les Paul would suck.
LPs are the best for a reason 🙃
@@SteveSterlacci That's why I have 2. Although the 2nd one is really a SG with Les Paul's name in it. 61 Custom 🤘
@@srwaite7 for me ,,, i love the guitars those makes me feel good and sound good instead of just great sound but uncomfortable . I love the sound of the les paul but uncomfortable to play
The solution is avoid Gibson! I'm over American guitars - overhyped and overpriced - these days i use ony Japanese guitars - so much better value. $1000 Japanese guitar as good as a $2500 Fender or Gibbo - often better.
American guitar companies (all American companies generally) rely HEAVILY on marketing and propaganda to push sub standard product. Japanese companies don't do much of that at all - not their way - but they do outstanding quality production. It's just like Toyota, Honda, Nissan etc, wipes the floor with Fords - same deal with guitars
Sorry but you don't know how to do it, I have a simple solution, do you really want to know?
No

What about your intonation?
Fixed at the saddles
