Puirt - Hebridean Ensemble

- Опубликовано: 15 июл 2020
- The second of our special commissions for the Seisean HebCelt series has Julie Fowlis at the helm. “Puirt” is a joyous celebration of song, music and dance, featuring at its heart a puirt à beul selection. Puirt à beul or ‘mouth music’, often associated with dance, is a Gaelic cultural tradition dating back to the 17th century and has become synonymous with the musical traditions of Scotland, Ireland and Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
Involving performers including Julie, Kathleen Macinnes, Cathy Ann MacPhee, Eilidh & Fiona Mackenzie, Alyth McCormack, Anna Murray, Ceitlin Lilidh, Josie Duncan, Eamon Doorley, Alex Tearse, Jane Hepburn Macmillan, Innes White, James Duncan Mackenzie, Jayne Macleod and Sophie Stephenson.
“Puirt” highlights the rich cultural connection that HebCelt holds to its heart. We hope you’ve packed your dancing shoes. Enjoy!

I’m telling you, this seriously needs many more views!!! 29K? Not enough! This was such an amazing collaboration!
I only discovered this yesterday. It’s fabulous. The step dancing adds a brilliant touch. We need more of this.Respect ❤
The first port is _Fhuair Sinn Ìm A's A' Ghleann Mhòr_ and the second port is _Amadan Gòrach Saighdear_ if anyone wants to know. :)
The third is Air an Fheill, also sung by Mary Ann Kennedy.ruclips.net/video/ZkT-TtSTFs0/видео.html
@@petermasterson8276 Indeed! Thank you. I'm not sure why I forgot to put that; maybe I didn't know that port at the time. 😂🤷♀️
The hell... This should be viral
I cannot believe how good this is! I play pipes in a North American competitive bagpipe band, and it's a constant struggle to convince my fellow bandmates that there is more to the music than impressing judges with awkward hornpipes from the 1990s! I'm hoping to inspire them with this beautiful explosion of music and emotion! Thank you to everyone involved in making this!
Have a look and listen to Scottish bands like RURA ...
PROJECT SMOK...TALISK....BREABACH...MANRAN...TIDE LINES.....ROSS AINSLIE (I really like his rendering of' The Bulgarian Set' on here at RUclips) other bands like KINNARIS QUINTET ...ELEPHANT SESSIONS,...THE PAUL McKENNA BAND...JULIE FOWLIS ..DUNCAN CHISHOLM.....any one of these names will lead you to ,many more Scottish Trad artists ,Bands and Musicians are all on here at RUclips worth a listen.
@@johnmcdade7379 Agreed, John. Those are all brilliant names!
Thank you for the kind remark ,Aurora..
@@johnmcdade7379 You're very welcome! :)
This was ridiculously enjoyable to behold.
Brilliant - a wonderful joyous Hebridean celebration in lockdown!
All those beautiful voices and musicians coming together to create something magically wonderful.
What a culture and country to be part of ,not pride just an inner contentment within me that my country ,it's people and culture bring to my head and heart when I feel , listen ,breathe ,touch , and see it all around me .
Well done everyone, including the video and sound editors. First class work! A lovely sighting of the Long Island and its wonderful people.
Bha sin dìreach àlainn!
Tha seo sgoinneil!
What a marvellous music,I love scottish music,IT's so sad that my ears can't understand the Lyrics
Love how the lady with red hair seem completely lost in the joy of the music.
Absolutely brilliant
That was awesome. What a production, by the most talented people. Loved it. Sharing, and thank you. x
Great, scotland forever! Greatings from Germany
Amazing! Me and my daughters have listened to this probably 50 times now and we love it. Please put it on Spotify soon so we can listen to it more often!!
Same here!

@@petermasterson8276 they do, just as "shuas" and "shìos" mean "up" and "down"
Is "Chunna mi 'g òl a-raoir thu" a dialect variation? "Chunnaic mi dh' òl a-raoir thu" is how my (admittedly old) textbook would have me transcribe that line.
That was amazing! I can't stop playing it.
This was so wonderful!! Thank you so much for posting this, brought a huge smile to my face!
I can't wait to share this with my students in St. Louis, MO! What a beautiful collaboration in challenging times!
me too! also in STL
I know they have what is called a Gaeltach (?) in Ireland. Do they have one in Scotland to keep the Scots Gaelic language and culture alive?
@@virginiaconnor8350 Gaelic is the language in everyday use in some of The Hebridean Islands and Western Highlands .Some schools on the Islands are teaching it to 5years old children and upwards .Glasgow now has Gaelic speaking schools in the West End and big Festivals like HebCelt along with Celtic Connections are loaded with Gaelic artists .The Trad music scene which has brought Gaelic to new ears has become very respected and listened to among the young .In my lifetime this has been the biggest revival and exposure probably courtesy of this and other social media of our country culture ,music ,language and people. People overseas having a look that we don't just drink whisky ,eat shortbread and play bagpipes in full highland regalia.
Well done ladies, truly outstanding! Thanks 👍👍👍
I was just looking up puirt-à-beul and was most CERTAINLY not expecting to see the amazing Julie Fowlis as the first face to pop up! What a pleasant surprise! :D
I learnt about puirt á beul when I was taking Irish Folklore and came across the Scottish harper duo Sileas. One group lead to another over the years.. Your music is fantastic too.
@@virginiaconnor8350 That's brilliant, Virginia! I love puirt-à-beul with all my heart and find them such a delight to sing. And yes, Sileas is great!
To whose music are you referring in your last sentence? 😯🤔
Beautiful singing beautiful women
Brilliant
Merci à vous ! ...
The dancing is the perfect touch. What style of dancing is that? It looks fun!!
Well done, girls! 2016 was last time I was at HebCelt!
Love it!
Love this so much, addicted
Me encanta la magia del gaélico escocés. Feliz Navidad a todos desde España. BRAVO 👏 👏 👏
Very cool !
Nice stuff. Hi from New York.
I love that wallpaper. It would look great in my kitchen. Did the cat enjoy the music? I'm sure my BC Tess Siobhan would've enjoyed it too! Never seen a mandolin(?) that huge!
Magnifique!
brilliant !
utterly awesome
Awesome
The lady dancing with the cat is the best. She wins. Cat vids always win.
Math fhèin!
Hi Julie! I love this!😮😊🏴☘️
My favourite video by you now (so far)!
A fantastic choir - the video is almost better than live...
Magnificent. This never gets old.
Это поистине восхитительно! Спасибо!
God bless you lovely lasses xx 😘 ❤
@ 1:31 - 'Amadan gorach' - my mother and my aunts called me that often enough!!
Well, that's a bit harsh. Hope you got over it.
👏👏👏😍
They won't give up, they won't give in. Corona go home, Alba gu bràth!
I love that! LOL!
Alba gu brath aghoul agam orst 🙏🙏🙏🏴🏴🏴💙💙💙
Still beautiful!

Where can we find music with fun?
across our country and through Ireland,
when a voice, a string and a dance 'rises
and fiddle, and pipes singing together?
What was that first box instrument in the video? And I didn't know a mandolin could be so large. Dancing with the cat was cute. My Irish, American, British, and Ga. Folklore professor-same teacher taught all 4 classes- had a set of Highland pipes in his bathtub so they wouldn't dry out! Love your music! I had a Border Collie named Tess Siobhan! She lived to be 16.2 yrs.!
Hi Virginia The instrument in question is called a Harmonium.
@@johnmcdade7379 Thank you. I don't recall my music teacher in h.s. asking me if I wanted to take Harmonium or even bagpipe lessons, but I wished he did!
@@virginiaconnor8350 Have a look at these other Scottish bands Virginia ...RURA......PROJECT SMOK.......TALISK .. ELEPHANT SESSIONS .... BREABACH...you might get a wee surprise ...and those clips alone will lead you to many ,many more.
@@johnmcdade7379 Sileas, Tannahill Weavers, Steeleye Span too. When I took British Folklore, I was the only one-other than my professor-who could spell Steeleye Span right. I look the others up too. Thanks very much! It all started with checking a couple of Chieftan records out of a public library and it all went uphill from there, even before I took the 4 Folklore classes at GSU. My parents abd grandparents loved the music too!
Does anyone know what the titles of the songs sung here are?

Does anyone know where I can find the lyrics to this in Gaelic?
