  • When thinking of The Sopranos, there are just a handful of episodes that many fans and critics alike view as some of the worst throughout the series' 86 episodes. For starters, there's the awful episode of A Hit is a Hit in season one, the episode of 'Christopher' that focusses on the relationship between the Native Americans and the Italian Americans during the Columbus Day Parade, and who could forget the creepy and infamous 'In Camelot' that showcased to us all Johnny Boy Sopranos' girlfriend in Fran Felstein. But with these few bad episodes, is there a season of The Sopranos that is considered the 'worst'?
    Which series of The Sopranos do you think is considered the 'worst'? Let me know, down in the comment section below! 👇🏻

      well for some reason up until funhouse i didnt like season 1 for a bit idk why but the intro of episode 1 is the reasoning for that i also came late to the sopranos and just binge it. also i think modern culture created by the sopranos like shorts clips and videos were already interesting to me i was waiting for particular moments in the show not knowing it would only be seasons 5 to witness the 20 years in the can story line.

      It's context. If you had to lose one season of an amazing show, S1 would be the odd one out.
      When I rewatch the series, I stop watching the finale with 15 minutes left because it's a colossal waste of time.

    Tony is in a coma for 2 episodes of 6A, not a "majority" of the season. 6A is the weakest largely because of the huge amount of time devoted to Vito's New England Adventures. It wouldn't be quite as bad if they had chosen someone who can actually act to become a sudden main character, but his performance along with the cliche storyline dragged down the whole season.

    • @HistoricallyRomantic

    I think part of the difference in tone between Season 1 and the subsequent seasons is that in Season 1 Tony is not yet the confirmed Boss of North Jersey. They say that "heavy is the head that wears the crown" and "it's lonely at the top", because Tony has not yet assumed that mantle, he still has the freedom to deal with other problems, and his friends are still his friends. Look at the season 1 finale in the restaurant where Paulie and Silvio are discussing Tony's seeing a shrink and becoming boss - at that point he's no longer simply their friend but THE BOSS.

      the dialogue is probably some of the worst in season 1 too. You can tell the actors really did not come into the peak of their roles right off the start, It's just really corny in some parts, and at points feels like it's either trying too hard, or it's along the lines of.. who actually talks like that?... "A Hit Is a Hit" -- aka the episode with 'Massive Genius', Massive and his cronies eeeeasily have thee WORST dialogue in the entire show. But it's not just that episode, or them. There is plenty of rough lines from almost every character in that season.. but thankfully it really only lasted for maybe a little over half of the first season
      Where later on, the characters conversations and dialogue flows like fine wine. But this issue did not last long, because you can tell in the later half of S1 and most definitely by season 2 the characters pretty much seem to be as they are for the rest of the show.

    I absolutely love season 1. The dynamic with Boss Junior and Mike Palmice was amazing to me. Also imo the Tony and Livia relationship was absolutely critical to everything. IT's so hard to chose a "worst season". I'd might have to come down to 5 by default, especially because my least favorite episode has to be Unidentified Black Males. However, I love the Little Carmine vs. Johnny story and thought Rusty Milio was the coolest mobster character since Mikey Palmice. Also, All Due Respect is one of my favorite season finales with how deep we get into Tony's mind.

    Season 5 lacked identity and the main story of tensions between Jersey / New York families was paced slowly. I still think Tony Blundetto was a great character even though it was introduced without any mentions in the earlier seasons.

    • @NotQuiteFirst
      @NotQuiteFirst 11 месяцев назад +24

      I never understand why so many people complain about Blundetto "not having being mentioned before" when the same is true for other characters that nobody says anything about. Ralph just appears out of nowhere in s3 as an active member of the crew without anything resembling a setup, Richie appears in s2 without having being mentioned in s1 which prominently featured his dying brother. At least with Blundetto they set him up in episode 1 with the news report, before he's introduced in episode 2.

  • @schrisdellopoulos9244
    @schrisdellopoulos9244 11 месяцев назад +44

    No, no season is worst. Some are better than others, but every season has enough great episodes to be phenomenal. There are bad episodes, as the ones you name as well as "Chasing It," and "D-Girl." Any episode that takes us out of the Sopranos world, or that tries to stand alone, is a mistake. Much like the movie Many Saints of Newark, the story has to stay true to canon.

      Absolutely agree about the need to stay in the Sopranos world. I thought the weakest episodes in the series were the ones that tried to tie in Hollywood: D-Girl, Luxury Lounge, the Cleaver storyline, the JT Dolan storyline. It's funny and probably self-deprecating for Chase to make a screenwriter the biggest loser on the show and to mock know-nothing producers in the Cleaver production meeting, but it's too big a stretch, trying to the worlds together.

    I also never got the impression that Melfi was just starting out as a therapist in season 1. She’s presumably around 40 in season 1. It doesn’t really make sense that she’d JUST be finishing residency and only just starting out. If anything, she could be newly going into private practice, but there’s really no information in season 1 that would lead to that conclusion at all.

    Interesting take. Season 1 finding itself was mostly jarring when comparing the pilot to the rest of the season. The minor things like Geno being Vito are quite forgiveable in my opinion. S1 is light hearted and lays the groundwork for so much of the show. I would say season 3 is the weakest. Again, it's forgiveable because the actress who played Livia sadly passed away which forced the writers to pivot into unplanned territory. S3 focusing on Livia's fake demented testimony against her son would have possibly been the best season instead of my least favourite.

    Season 1 and 2 were the best in my opinion. They were authentic like no other show or movie about mafia I've seen. The characters like Mikey Palmice, Richie Aprile and Junior Soprano (when he still had some kind of power) were never merely replaced in the later seasons. After season 2 the show went downward. I felt bad for Junior in the first place for being put in house arrest that early in the series, with limited power. And he was sharp as a fackin cue ball. They were doing bussines back then, actually. Extortion, gambling construction, unions, hijacking etc. Back then It went into details , they would carry about corpses. They would cut them out, even mill them. Later, as the series went further, the murders were done with carelessly leaving evidence all around. The murders started to be to cinematic (JT Dolan, Doc Santoro, Gery Torciano for example). In the last season i felt like they were no mafia anymore. No more doing street bussines. Now they make movies. The later seasons were OK. But I think they lost themselves. They lost their authenticity thay had in the first seasons.

If I would watch the first season and go straight to the 6. season, It feels to me like I've been watching 2 different shows. It's not just the story, It is the whole atmosphere and acting in the first seasons. So many scenes were epic. Just the sitdown with Junior and Hesh for example.I'm not saying that the later seasons were that bad, but I don't remember a lot of scenes to be considered as epic in the later seasons. Maybe it is only a thing about feeling. Like many consider the story Many Saints of Newark reliable to the Sopranos, which actually is prequel to the show. I feel that Many Saints of Newark doesn't have anything to do with the Sopranos,

    Season 6 Part I is the worst season by far. It starts off great with the first six episodes but quickly goes downhill with that silly episode about Benny and Artie going to war, AJ trying to kill uncle Junior while trying to impress his friends at the club and the season finale, 'Kaisha', where literally NOTHING interesting happens. Phil Leotardo has a heart attack. Big deal. It ends with everyone together on Christmas eve. I'm sorry, is this a Hallmark series or a crime drama. It also scored the lowest number of Emmy nominations of any season.

    100% agree. Seasons 5 is my favorite by the way due to fantastic storylines: mob war in New York and Adriana’s downfall. Meadow’s relationship with Finn felt weird, but the divorce angle is actually quite captivating and well written. Tony B and Feech feel a bit out of place, but both of them served their purpose well: showing how Tony became a better mobster than ever before and started to completely deteriorate as a human being (the second part reaching its climax in season 6 of course). And Robert Loggia carried Feech really well through the few episodes he was in. Oh, and I am a fan of dream sequences so episode 11 is one of the very best in my book.

    The weakest season has to be 6A for me. Yes, it starts out very strong (even the weakest Sopranos material is still very good), but after Tony exits his coma, it meanders and drags a bit. The 12 episodes probably could've been condensed down to 9 or so. More importantly, 6B, which came right after, is probably the Sopranos' best run of episodes. All killer, no filler. In comparison, 6A is a bit flabby.
    P.S. I don't get the S1 hate. There were kinks that needed ironing out, but that's the case for most shows. I also enjoyed the lighter tone of the early seasons quite a bit.

Tonys guilt about missing the heist and subsequent arrest gets more attention but Tony B's side just kinda is left in thin air as to his true feelings. His actions seem eratic without explanation to why. What logic was his mind operating under. Thats not clear. More was needed with all the paroled guys to make their characters more understandable, but especially Tony B. That was a missed opportunity IMO.

Tony’s relationship with mom is so intriguing. At first it seems like just one of the things Tony has to deal with, but soon you realize his mom troubles bleed into all his other troubles. It’s such an important part of Tony’s character too. Also idk how you can say the last episode of season 1 is the best when that season has the episode where Tony gets shot and imagines the next door girl that ends up being a representation of the loving mother he never had but always wanted. Not only the best episode in the season, but one of the best in the whole series

It was really boring. The seasons that came afterwards, even with their problems, were able to have stuff to entice me to. Season 3 made me not watch the show for a while. Season 6A is also a contender for worst season because it got too pretenious with the themes of death.
