    Idk I think it’s strange how much it leans towards the traditional Japanese motifs specifically. Shiver’s design clearly shows Japanese influences, but the music and other band members show a much more culturally diverse brand. My first impression of Deep Cut during the reveal was that they were a chaotic melting pot of different cultures. I wish the Brazilian and Indian origins of Big Man and Fraye had gotten at least a reference in the set and logo designs. Maybe there’s lore behind this and Shiver is like the founder or something but it’s bizarre how the music and set design tell two different stories.

    • @DekuGamer
      @DekuGamer  2 года назад +48

      Absolutely. You make a very good point. And now that you mention it, the music and the rest of the brand feel like two separate entities. It's honestly interesting to see how this is all playing out. I heard somewhere that Big Man's background is a traditional dance teacher, so maybe Frye's backstory makes her the music producer? That would answer the heavy Indian/Brazilian vibes in the music. It really is disappointing that Indian and Brazilian influences are exclusive to the music. I'm looking forward to seeing how their influence plays out in the story mode.

      But isn't Big Man represented by electronic music and not Samba?

    • @marias8630
      @marias8630 Год назад +9

      Disagree. There’s Indian design, music, clothing elements to be observed within Deep Cut. (Can’t comment on the Brazilian side of things though.) Frye sitting on a floor pillow almost in a butterfly stretch is very Indian. Her dance moves and singing are very traditionally Indian. The shawls she and Shiver wear seem to be inspired by dupattas/chunnis more than anything Japanese, and her fit is totally modernized Patiala pants with a choli top. I would even argue that Sh and Fr’s headpieces and jewelry can be attributed to Indian culture more than Japanese culture, since Indian “lavish looks” (eg party wear, festive wear, wedding wear) often place hella emphasis on earrings and head jewelry. You could even argue that the Deep Cut logo is kind of like a Dharma wheel.

    really detailed, though i had hoped you could cover some of what the music has to offer in its other influences outside of japanese culture that others have picked up on, but there's a lot to digest visually with the group. great video!
    i'm not an expert on japanese food either, but to me, Shiver's fan design reminds me of a type of kamaboko that's a semi-circle shape on top of a small wooden board, and if that's the case of the design, it would tie into their group's name in japanese: Surimi Rengō, or Surimi Union. that's me just speculating, though!

AND if you look even closer behind them(in the trailer with their masks on still), the sky is the same fake sky, made up of triangles. The logo also looks like a traditional crest, or "mon". Three of an image is a very common design motif within mon, and a very large percentage of them are within circles. Putting a mon on the table and lanterns makes a ton of sense, since that's how mon are often used (you can even get them printed on mugs in the modern day). Also the design on the sign you mentioned IS traditional as well. There's a lot less modernity in these design elements than you think.

I did feel like the way it was used in the background elements had some intention that I didn't quite understand, so that really clears up a lot. great video, and i realise a lot of the comments are mentioning frye being indian (backed up by the music as you can hear what i think to be a sitar in the backing track, as well as her clothing as i do think the baggy pants have a more indian feel than Japanese), but something ive never heard people talk about is that big man is basically confirmed to be Brazilian, feel free to check it yourself, but the splatoon wiki has a section about languages, in every translation of the game he says some sort of thing based on either manta or ray, such as english saying ay ay, which is then translated in brackets afterwards, except for Portuguese, where he has no translation and literally just speaks normally. normally id say thats just a quirky translation where the Portuguese team couldnt be bothered to do it right lol, but combining the samba esq music in his theme and in anarchy rainbow, along with the other two being based off different cultures and that tying into their music, its pretty safe to assume big man is Brazilian

    Can I just say how I love how big mans color is grey, which grey is great at making other colors pop out like, u know, yellow and blue, just like how big mans is usually the one in the back making frye and shiver look better especially on the stage 0:49 and in this drawing of them 3:02. also in the music, like anarchy rainbow, big man is the tenor and his part on the song is also meant to be underneath frye and shiver singing making them sound better, just like the colors and how he is presented on stage and in the picture. I thought that was pretty cool and it was something you didnt talk about

      That's a great point! Him being grey is a great character design trait. To add to what you said, he's often a backdrop for Shiver and Frye so that the contrast you mentioned is even stronger. Not to mention that he's also red, the last primary color. While more subtle, it adds to the trio part and bouncing off each other (like Frye and Shiver's details being warm and cold in a shade slightly similar to the other's color; them wearing white and black too which brings out Big Man's grey). Big Man may be all about making his friends stand out but they're also subtly reciprocating!

    I have two problems w their character designs imo
    Them having full on, one color outfits with the lack of dull tones can make their design feel a bit more childish (or targeted towards kids) I would have rlly preferred if they used white/black base colors for their hair w additional of yellow/purple, same w their outfits
    Their facial features also kinda don’t feel splatoon enough? Or maybe that’s just me lmao I think it would have been a bit better if they made fryes eyes a bit higher n gave shiver the iconic splatoon eyeliner but tbh it’s makes them more unique
    Other than that I am extremely happy w their design n would prefer it no other way

      Yeah I totally agree with you there. I didn't realize how saturated and "in your face" their colors were until I made the thumbnail for this video. Your idea could have been very nicely integrated into their designs. Marina is a prime example of it.

      one thing i rly like about their designs is that they actually have little details that compliment the main colour like fryes mouth fingertips and tentacles/hair fading into blue/purple, and shiver having red eyes, shoes and finger tips. it also makes them more connected cause fryes details are cold coloured and shivers details are warm coloured

      Shiver and Frye didn't appeal to me at first reveal, but the moment they showed the Anarchy Rainbow music video thing during the Splatoon 3 Direct, it clicked with me as to why they look the way they do. So far the face shapes of the character idols in the series have been a wide, stretched out, "moe" vibe to it. With Splatoon 3, following the theme of chaos, there's much more wild and out-there designs. Frye is more round and circular and Shiver is really exggerating the wide and stretched out look with her eyes and lips being very thin. I feel like they're leaning hard to have a more cartoony appeal than an anime appeal like the previous 2 games. I love them now and it opens the door to having more wild idol characters in future games.

    Also that Big Man just. doesn't fit in very well. He can't even do the deep cut pose the other two do. and he hides behind the tv. rather than getting to feel like a part of the group. On the topic of Deep Cut's logo, there's one more concept represented in it. As the main shapes form a triangle with a space in the middle criss-crossed by lines, it looks like an A in a circle, which is the symbol for anarchism. So in addition to traditional Japanese culture, music, and the number 3, it also works in the game's chaos theme!

    I would recommend looking into the Japanese artform of “rakugo”, or comedic storytelling. Shiver specifically seems to be centered around this, going as far as having the fan and (what believe is) a kendai. Both are used as minimal props for rakugo stories. There’s also a wooden clacker, but Shiver is just using the fan to mimic it when they smack it against the kendai.
    The podcast stage appears to also be based off of a rakugo stage: a slightly raised platform with performers sitting on cushions.
    The Deep Cut icon can also be seen as reminiscent of the symbols artist use for rakugo.
    Heck, judging by our favorite character of all time, Uendo Toneido the rakugo artist, rakugo stories also tend to revolve around “3” characters. It might be commenting on how Shiver, Frye, and Big Man form a three personality group.
    We really can’t emphasize enough that the theme for the idols this time around seems to be rakugo! It’s almost too much, honestly, with Frye and Big Man being less direct haha. Shiver kind of “embodies” the theme so far.
    If you want to know more about rakugo, look up our favorite character Uendo! They’re a joy (just like Shiver), or maybe the new manga series Akane Banashi!

    One thing people don't talk about enough is how SPECIFICALLY their branding is Japanese.
    Shiver is depicted as a Rakugo storyteller. From the fan, to her exaggerated movements, and her desk. Also the cardboard cutouts behind here look like a traditional Japanese "theater stage" so to speak. This is also why the Non-Binary debate happened. Rakugo whether male or female do not use gendered pronouns when telling the story so as to make it relatable and funny to anyone. It is meant to be a story told from an "objective perspective" so to speak... and she is referred to with female pronouns by the Frye in Japanese at least once. That said I am all for people headcanoning that Shiver is NB. No problems there - but the initial theory hinged itself on them not using gendered pronouns and that is the reason the character does this.
    Frye on the other hand is depicted like an old man in Japanese haha! Even her animations and sitting style are depicted as such. While her aesthetics are shown to be distinctly East Indian. She sings in an Indian style, and she also uses a flute to charm eels. However her personality is in general that of an old boomer Japanese man lmao! So in that regard you could say they're both NB haha!
    Anyways yeah, their entire setup is meant to come off as a sort of "comedy trio" vibe. At least in Japanese. While the other idols are very blatantly pop-idols (both Japanese, and Western for the
    Sisters, and Off the Hook respectively)
    People focus on the music and such but there is a deeper inspiration to their characters.

    • @DekuGamer

      I'll definitely think about it! Maybe after I'm done with my other planned videos I can explore that topic. Though, I don't know much about character design, it couldn't hurt to analyze their character and outfit designs. I think I'll do it after playing the story mode as well just in case they're in there.
