I get what you are saying, but if it helps, these guys are some of the hardiest fish alive. They are comfortable in water that is room temperature, but they can be frozen in the water and the antifreeze molecules in their blood will help them survive. They can also survive when water temps reach near 90 to 100F. They prefer about 18-28ppt salinity to live in, but when the water evaporates from the marsh pools they can live in salinity up to 50ppt (average saltwater is 35ppt)!
Yea. They have really nice colors when the water is warm (mating colors). Also, they are super hardy and eat anything. They can live with no filter if you wanted!
This is in the marshes of NJ. These are Fundulus heteroclitus, the mummichog, and they are great bait! You can use them for bass fishing in freshwater or fluke fishing in salt water!
Yea they are grass shrimp. They are a major part of the food web for the fish in the bay! And yes, the inverted cone makes a huge difference because F. heteroclitus (the minnow you see) will naturally swim along the edge of an object until it finds an exit.
They follow edges. In the marsh, they follow the marsh edge to move around. So in the trap they follow the edge and it leads them nowhere. If the cone was pointing out, they would follow the edge and easily get out!
Fundulus heteroclitus is the scientific name of the mummichog which is commonly used as bait here on the east coast. They are crazy fish. They can survive water salinity double that of the ocean all the way to fresh water. They can be frozen in the winter and the antifreeze proteins in their blood keep them alive! They are super hardy!
They follow each other into the trap. And there is room behind the camera for fish to hide. I am making another video in a new location which will be posted this week or next.
This is pretty awesome. Im amazed at their coordination. I figured they'd bump around the sides looking for the entrance but they spot it from a ways and they went right through. Could you do another if you havent already?
Your one of the best youtubers i know your not one of them people who wont reply to peoples comments i ask people questions all the time and they dont answer so thanks heaps
Those were killies right? This was awesome to watch because i have used those traps for years to catch killies for Fluke and snapper fishing. I like the way they would pose for the camera when they saw their own reflection and then go and try to eat the Grass shrimp..lol very cool and thanks for sharing.
Damn That's an awesome catch' They are also awesome to make killie rings for crabbin. Blueclaws love ripping their bellies open to nom nom on the innards.
It's the cone shape they push from outside and slowly get directed toward the middle when they wish to go out the push and the cone shape pushes them outwards
it seems like the more minnows are in the trap the more other minnows approach, as if curious why there's so many fish here. "hey, carl, what's goin on over here, you throwin' a party?"

Exactly! And I did right off the ledge shown at the end of the video!!! Cant wait till spring!

White bread. It doesnt attract crabs but the fish love it!

Yes. Any bread such as hot dog rolls works!
Yep! Exactly!
Thanks for the tip! I will give it a try... I will save the parts of the crab I normally clean out when I cook them!

Thanks! I was surprised that once one goes in, the others follow like lemmings... I will do another soon. Thanks for the interest!
They are delicious! I want to have crayfish next time Im in Louisiana!
Thanks man! What are yabbies?
Thanks! I need to find me some crayfish!
1:09 Oh, Hi Mark. XD LOL
Whos mark?
Thanks!
I used a GoPro. The cameras are versatile and have a great wide angle view!
Yea, it has a nice wide angle to fit most of the trap!
Hi
I am your biggest fan
I dont know the brand but it is the common dual funnel minnow trap.
thanks!
Exactly
Are the funnels facing in or out? Are you using one or two funnels?
Like a marsh pool... It's their natural environment. The pond I put them in is at :28
yep
I use bread, but I heard a crushed crab works well too!
They follow edges. In the marsh, they follow the marsh edge to move around. So in the trap they follow the edge and it leads them nowhere. If the cone was pointing out, they would follow the edge and easily get out!
hahaha, yea, jaws is actually only a few feet away in the main channel!
Fundulus heteroclitus the mummichog
YESSS!!!!
No, but a similar habitat... It is in the Mullica River, NJ
Good idea and good luck.. Break up some bread and toss it in as bait... Works every time!
For the most part there are just minnows. There are different species though. Striped killifish, rainwater killifish, sheapshead minnow, etc
Thanks... More to come soon! Tis the season! ahaha
Les frito para arriba un día y ellos "Fundulus patatas fritas" llamados. Fueron muy sabroso!
Boi are you going insane?
Marko Lskvr I think he is

Aw Im sorry buddy... To make it up, come into this cylinder house i made for you and have some food... hahahaha
We used do this as kids "catching Killies" in Queens NY off the creeks that run off of Jamaica Bay! Thanks for the video!
Yea, nothing better than those childhood memories! These are the same species as in Jamaica Bay!
hahaha exactly!

What was the time frame on this video? Not real time right? Couple of hours?
I hope you didnt pass out!

Love the under water footage, what camera do u use ?
try using crushed up blue crab next time....they go insane for them...good luck!
Very nice vid! :-) Is the trap homemade? Or have you bought it?
I purchased it. They are cheap $15 so it isnt worth making them. Thanks!!!!
Out with the fish vids and in with the new car vids
Wow nice video thanks

Really good, what camera do you use and is there any way i can get a trap like one of them online
Yea, I purchase them online. Just search "minnow trap" on google and you can find them. Get the silver color trap. I used a gopro camera
How long was the trap in the water?
what is the best bait for this trap in you opinion
what did you use them for?
is that chincoteague island virgina by any chance???
1:51 jaws dun dun dun !!!
Was that jut bread used?
good interesting video. !
your video is awesome
crayfish are the best. We call them crawdaddies where I'm from. If they are seasoned right, they taste amazing. I haven't had them in forever.
Have you tried to put then in a fish tank?
