    Thanks for watching guys. My favourite film point and shoot of all time is the Ricoh GR-1 because I bought it for myself to use on my honeymoon back in 1998. I used the camera until it finally broke a couple of years ago. I'm still hoping I can revive it back to life. My favourite digital point and shoot was the Canon SD700is, not because it was great, but because I had a lot of great memories from it. It was so small and compact I took it with me everywhere. What's your favourite point and shoot camera and why?

    • @kiwipics
      @kiwipics 6 лет назад +1

      The Canon G16 is my go to point and shoot digital compact camera. Mainly for the combination of size, lens range and fast aperture.
      On the compact film front, I use a Yashica T4, Olympus Trip, Canon A1

      bigheadtaco - Could you make a real world comparison between the X100F and this Leica? I'm thinking of buying one or the other but cannot make a decision. I would assume the bigger sensor size would be an advantage but does the micro four-thirds hold up in low light conditions?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 лет назад

      @@rajkhosla9066 The Fujifilm X100F will do better in lowlight versus the D-Lux 7, but you can also zoom with the D-Lux so depending on what you're photographing, you can get 'better' photos if you need to zoom in.

    For those wondering if "buying the Leica instead of the Panasonic is worth the extra cost", here is the bottom line: Colors science, styling and warranty aside, you buy the Panasonic and when you resell it is worthless, or you buy the Leica and a few years later is worth the same, or with some luck to an interested collector, even more. So, always buy the Leica, take good care
    of it, enjoy it, keep the box and all the stuff inside as original, and you have money in the bank.

    I have the Panasonic LX100 and it is by far the best travel camera one can own. Cell phones can't match it. The lens is one of the best I've ever used in terms of sharpness and clarity. It fits in a jacket pocket easily with a metal screw on cap. Not sure the Leica branded one is worth the extra cost, but they are equally brilliant cameras. There is not a single camera made that offers what this one does out of the box when considering the sensor size and lens combination.

    Thanks for the video. I had a D-LUX 4 titanium and used it for many years as my 'go to, with me all the time' camera... till I dropped it a short distance on a table and after that the lens wouldn't stay out after turning it on :-( Too much ¥ to repair and it was time for an up-date anyway. Replaced it with a GR and love that camrea to bits. I also have a Leica monochrom for more serious/creative/fun photography, but its not something I have with me all the time. With the GR showing its age - dust on the sensor, sticky shutter release, buttons - have been thinking about something new for that everyday-color. Have been waiting and had thought it would be the GR III to be coming soon, but this D-LUX 7 could be an alternitive. 24-75 is the perfect focal range, sensor is enough (although I'd been saying to myself nothing less than APS-C), manual controls, bluetooth and finder/nice rear touch screen, and [I hope] built well.
    BTW; for those that say its not worth the extra money over the Panasonic... For a couple hundred dollars...
    I'm from the USA but in Japan and the Panasonics here are only Japanese language menu. Leica has a 3 year guarantee (compared to 1 year for Panasonic). The Kyoto Leica Shop is a short train ride from me and any problems I have Leica Japan has taken very good care of me over the years. The red dot does have a 'premium' label to it and if I do ever decide to sell it (without droping it ;-) the resale value is higher (or atleast sellable). And... I like the styling of the Leica version, hay if I'm going to be carrying this around with me a lot, may as well enjoy it.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. I also find the accessories are much nicer for the Leica. The currently available cases for the Typ 109 and 7 are amazing. And yes, depending on your country, typically the warranty is better for the Leica, especially if you travel or move. The warranty is international.

    • @jugalator
      @jugalator 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah I'm thinking the same. The LX100 II is only a minor update to the LX100, but it's a minor update to what looks like a great, particularly well-rounded compact camera. And this Leica variant is just so timeless and nice looking. I shoot with a Fujifilm X-T1 and have said to myself that APS-C is the perfect compromise between quality and weight/size/cost... But this one looks very tempting. :) The micro 4/3 sensor ought to still distance itself comfortably ahead of even the latest generation of smartphone cameras although they keep getting better. I think 1" sensor cameras are about to get endangered especially with advancements of the photo post-processing engines and processing power in the smartphones.

    Hi, I need some advice for a "definitive" family camera that brings out images with a certain three-dimensionality focused more on portraits of my fast-moving children. I currently have a Nikon z50 16-50 and 50-250 (sorry only for the small limited af area in Af-c and the lack of a 70-300 for football matches) and sometimes it annoys me to take my bag with me in contexts to go out with my family and to the sea. I need a compact camera that can be attached to a belt loop or that fits in a pocket. Probably the best solution would be to have a pocket compact and possibly a reflex or mirrorless camera that is not too small.
    I am undecided between the gr III x or fujifilm x100v or leica d-lux 7, pen-f, gx9, Canon RP + 50mm for the "definitive" portraits For shots of my family.
    I am looking for the most creative and fun camera that will entice me to take it with me regardless of whether it has beautiful filters and B&W.
    What would you recommend me? Thanks.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 года назад

      Depends on what, but the new smartphones are very good right now. I think in lowlight and video, the iPhone ProMax will outshoot the DLux in many ways.... due to software enhancements. My feeling is you’ll need to go up to either the Panasonic GH series or Sony A7 series to see a noticeable difference, especially in lowlight situations. Plus, these won’t be straight out of camera footage. You’ll still need to work with these files in a proper video editing software.

    It's a beautiful camera for sure. For some it would be an idea travel camera. The quality is good enough for professional use, too. The lens might be fixed, but that leaf shutter sure is nice to have - even if you don't shoot with a flash, it's very quiet.
    You're right about the zoom - it should be stepped. Or, that should be an option in the menu. I still think that compacts cannot be replaced by phones, FWIW. Yes, the 2018 iPhones are amazing but even they, with all their computational advances, aren't as good as a modern camera like the D-Lux. Not even close.
    If you are giving Leica feedback, please tell them that they should be the first manufacturer to completely eliminate sliding apertures from their zoom lenses. It's bad enough for photography, but it's even worse for video.
    P.S. Nice flatlay!

    • @yuidfbse
      @yuidfbse 2 года назад +3

      The zoom is stepped, it's in the menu as an option when you set it up by configuring the lens' manual focus ring to be zoom instead. Fundamental that these reviewers actually read the manual and learn the camera before making videos like this but.. whatever. And yeah, one of the best small cameras ever made and Leica's last compact camera. A classic in the making.

    Bought one. All pictures come out severely over exposed (exposure compensation set at 0) with a blue tint. AWB, Auto-ISO, Auto-shutter and Aperature priority both in RAW and JPEG and JPEG fine. Even tried in full auto (little red button) and same bad result. Colours are way off and very cold and unnatural. Compared it by taking the same picture of the same scene, same camera setting with a D80 and and even with my Iphone and both came out way better. I am in no way an expert however GF is a pro and normally shoots with her Nikon. Se can't figure it out either. Something is off. Any thoughts?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  5 лет назад

      Very odd, have you factor reset everything and try again? Also, have you made sure that even though you're in auto white balance, there is a feature that allows you to tweak the balance. Make sure that's zero. Also, did you make sure that it's not on any 'smart' exposure mode, just the standard Program Auto? Also, did you check the actual LCD and EVF setting, that it's not been adjusted? Make sure those are set to normal. Finally, did you actually upload the images to the computer to see if it looks the same?
      If you do this and it's still looking odd, you will have to contact Leica. Perhaps you have a faulty copy. Mine actually had really nice and neutral colours and exposure was really good.

      @χχάάοοςς 5 лет назад +1

      The CL will have superior resolution, build quality and flexibility, but of course you have to pay for this. If you have a few thousand dollars to invest, the CL is a good investment if you want to get into the Leica ecosystem at a reasonable price (for Leica). If not, the D-Lux will be your cheapest entry point into Leica digital.

    I don’t understand the d lux cameras, they’re just literally Panasonic cameras with no additional benefits for more money. It doesn’t even look premium or well built, it looks cheaply made, not a real Leica.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 лет назад +21

      Leica has partnered with Panasonic to make them a profitable company. The 'real' Leica cameras don't make them enough money, and they don't have the money to make their own point and shoots, so they get other manufacturers to make them. Leica has been doing this since the 1970s. The Leica CL was made by Minolta, the Leica R series was co-developed with Minolta as well. All of Leica's film point and shoots were made by other manufactures (most Minilux's were made by Minolta). In the new digital age Leica has partnered with Panasonic. Without this partnership, my guess is Leica would not be profitable. Remember Leica has a total of 1600 global employees. They are a small time company trying to swim in a market with global giants like Sony, Canon, Panasonic, etc. Without these licensing deals (Panasonic's M43 lenses are labeled Leica but they really aren't) I think Leica will have the same fate as most other European camera manufacturers: bankrupt or bought out.

    • @owRekssjfjxjxuurrpqpqss
      @owRekssjfjxjxuurrpqpqss 6 лет назад +4

      bigheadtaco I’m aware of that but at least the CL cameras could take Leica M glass and were well made in their own right. I’m asking why people would buy the non Leica cameras with the Leica dot, especially in the digital age.
      I’m not questioning why Leica does it, it’s a smart business move, I’m questioning why someone would buy one of these cameras especially over the cheaper Panasonic versions which are functionally identically.

      @bigheadtaco  6 лет назад +6

      @@owRekssjfjxjxuurrpqpqss for better or worse, people are brand loyal. They believe in what Leica stands for and are willing to support them. If it means paying a bit more for the same thing, it's okay. They don't want Leica to go out of business, but also they get something out of being a Leica consumer. There's a sense of premium when you buy a Leica. But this is for another subject, the idea of brand loyalty and value. But thanks for your thoughts. These discussions are important.

      it's for posers. What Leica "stands for" is licensing out their name to make money because their business model doesn't work. Imagine if Ferrari started putting it's logo on a Fiat...oh wait, they did, back in the 1960s.The "Ferrari" Fiat Dino Coupe, and it's still sneered at by Ferrari fans.

      I will make a comment on it soon. I was able to get some decent pictures with it, but for the price I really can’t recommend. I think the Panasonic LX100 mark II is a better value, but I was happy with the image quality.

    I wish you would more of the kind of videos you used to do years ago, instead of these sort of inconsequential videos. I have always liked your work, but miss the old bigheadtaco who talked more of photography as art.

      I'm still here. Did you see my street shootout in Hong Kong with Camera Film Photo or my tour of The Annex Photo in Toronto? Just remember those video takes weeks or months to produce. An unboxing video takes 1 day, and gets 10 times more views. I balance the need for views with the more difficult videos that get much less views, but I enjoy more. If all I did was interviews and travel videos, I'd produce about 10 videos a year. I also did some Two Minute Tuesday videos. Again, very low view count in comparison to my gear videos. I will continue doing them, but view counts and view minutes are important to me. I also only work with brands I like and review gear that I enjoy using. I've always reviewed gear and I've always done unboxing videos. If you consume all my content (website, Instagram, Twitter, FujiLove, Medium Format Magazine) you will see that RUclips is 10-15% of my entire ecosystem.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 лет назад +6

      Finally, without high view videos, I get less opportunity to do the more fun videos I enjoy doing. Total amount of subscribers and views open up doors for me and my brand. I've never required anyone for money to view my own content, I don't do Patreon, so this is an important part of my brand. Without it, there will be no videos.

I'd like to know what videos of mine you enjoy and why specifically this video is what is making you think twice of leaving. Is it the camera that I'm reviewing? Am I doing too many unboxings? I am curious to know. Thanks if you have time to reply 👊🏼

      @Alex_564 6 лет назад

      I'd second that, and also add a updated GM1(kind of partial as I own one). Maybe add the updated 20mp sensor and if possible have the mechanical shutter when using flash be 1/100. I'm okay with 1/500s sans flash, but 1/50s a second with flash is just a bit too slow.
