- Marissa Meyer, 40, is facing a felony charge after a school resource officer allegedly recovered a handgun from her backpack, which officials say was unzipped, making the gun accessible to children. Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber examines the case, why Meyer allegedly brought the gun to school, and how security personnel found out about the weapon with Chad Ayers, a former sheriff’s deputy and founder of ProActive Response Group.

It's pretty cool
Zllo
i'm actually pleasantly surprised she wasn't caught with a student. thought it was the daily case.
The gasp I made when I read the first part of the title but not all of it, sadly. Brain immediately went there
It's inevitable that she would be caught with a student, but a firearm charge prevented this.
Me too!! How terrible is that omg
Isn’t that what they want with actual bills being considered for teachers to have guns.
Yes, they're pushing it in my state.
I have no problem with that, as long as the teacher is competent.
I was under that impression too
Right I'm a little confused by this. I thought they wanted the low paid teachers/ part time parents to pack heat?? 🤔
That librarian isn't her friend. If she wanted to help, tell her to go put it in your car while you watched her students.
That's what I was thinking. If you know that your friend did this inadvertently, just make sure to protect the students by getting off premises ASAP. If I didn't want to get directly involved by having the gun in my own car (which is still on school premises), I would advise my friend to immediately report that she has an emergency and must go home.
Exactly @@-HeyLyd-
Yes, she spoke to the librarian in confidence. It was a simple mistake.
40+ years ago, I was weapons specialist in my army unit. That being said when you own a weapon You Wil Always know where that weapon is. There is no gray area on this subject. If you cannot member that it is on you. You should not own one.
I suspect it was more of a "panic answer"
To be fair whenever I go to tell people the handgun I carry my mind always wants to say 360 when it’s a 380 😅
Too many non gun trained people running around w a pistol
Did she forget she had a gun, or forget she was in a gun free zone? Big difference. Since gun free zones are illegal, and against human rights...
My daughter lives in Tennessee and she said they just passed teacher carry.
There is a ridiculous amount of teachers getting in trouble for inappropriate relations with young students. If they can't even handle that responsibility of keeping their hands off their students.........
@@edmunddantes7097
Well, thanks for your irrelevant comment.
@@keithb6717 Irrelevant? In order for me to TRUST a teacher with a firearm I would have to have TRUST in the teachers to begin with. Just because YOU don't agree with something doesn't mean it's irrelevant.
Well, Tennessee is the nasty naval of America. It's like America's yeast infection.
@@edmunddantes7097 Just because YOU don't agree with something doesn't mean it's relevant.
See what I did there? I turned it around on you. Did you notice how I used your words against you? Let me spell it out unless its too complicated: You don't trust teachers, doesn't mean we ALL shouldn't trust teachers.
If anything it hints at a bigger problem in administration lacking proper security screening, not this lame-o's personal vendetta against teachers.
It seems short-sighted to arrest a person who made an honest mistake, realized she'd created an unsafe situation, and asked for help to fix the problem. The next teacher might try to bluff their way out of it and disaster could result. If this is really about safety, the focus should be on creating a culture where people feel safe in asking for help if they screw up. I think that kind of mistake should have serious consequences for her employment, but I don't think it's productive to treat her like a criminal.
I thought people were calling for teachers needing to be armed? Where are those people at now?
They are at schools with kids who know their teacher is certified and not some random teacher with a gun
They are too busy counting their weapons and fantasizing about being some sort of cowboy hero.
An ordinary person would lock the gun in her car as soon as she realized she had it. Instead she just tells someone else. Not the best thinking process. Pretty careless with a firearm in a school, hmmm?
An ordinary person wouldn't need a gun. Normalizing paranoia is breaking this country.
She should have stayed quiet and locked it in her car. Subs have no where to lock things up.
This is horrific
Hard to blame her considering how often we see videos of young animals attacking teachers.
???? What did bro mean by this 💀💀
@@bluebird1954we probably don’t want to know what they meant.
@@bluebird1954 loool
Yea, that puppy who shot the sheriff, too! He did not shoot the deputy.
Keep the guns away from kids , however teachers should be allowed to be armed for any threats
I don't think it's right to have her mugshot all around the country like this over a gun
what if a kid threatens a teacher tho
Idk, my woodshop teacher was missing like 3 and a half fingers . He shouldn't have been handling a circular saw, let alone a gun 😂
Im sure parents are lining up for random adults to be armed in close proximity to their precious children.
Ffs. Thanks for reminding me why mine aren’t going to public schools. No one other than their father or me will be “armed” around mine.
@@c-spam9581What if the teacher isn’t mentally stable/loses control of the gun/is negligent with it’s care. There are a million reasons to not allow it
I know the subject here is a staffer who negligently, recklessly, and accidentally possessed a firearm on school property so I'm going a little off subject but the subject of arming teachers was brought up so I want to address that.
The question isn't "are they there for that or are they there to teach?" the question is "do teachers possess less rights to self defense than any other citizen?" and obviously the answer is a simple "No." The hypothetical scenario mentioned around 5:00 is not unique to teachers. Any human being in possession of a firearm, police officers included, could allow a student unauthorized access to a firearm if they recklessly leave it unattended. But no one is seriously suggesting we disarm officers in schools. Officers have policies and procedures in place that emphasize strictly maintaining positive control of your weapon AT ALL TIMES. The issue is therefore not that the person in possession of a firearm is a teacher and not a police officer for example, but that teachers are more likely to recklessly utilize, maintain control of, etc their weapons. So why not have policies in place that specifically require if a teacher is going to be armed, they must go through a battery of vetting and/or training?
While there are certainly plenty of teachers I wouldn't want armed, there are absolutely exceptions. And a wholesale violation of second amendment rights doesn't seem like a wise solution to me. The PE teacher who has anger issues, sure. The art teacher who is forgetful and always losing stuff, sure. The office worked who conceal carries every day of their life while not at work and has for 10 years though? Is the solution to disarm the guy who clearly has the prerequisite demonstrable experience and training necessary to defend themselves, and potentially others? Who does that help? Not him, and certainly not anyone around him should an active shooter arise while he's disarmed.
I’m not against arming teachers, but being within kids reach is the obviously a problem, so are school shootings too tho bc they target gun free zones. A job shouldn’t have any legal grounds to strip away anyone of their 2nd A
She can't have protection?
Not on school grounds. And not where it's accessible to students.
It's common sense. The gun was left out in open hence a 2nd grader could grab it. Your the reason why people can't have protection. Asking dumba$$ questions.
Never trust a 21st century liberal..her liberal friend turned her in.
Everybody cries self protection after innocent people get shot.
@edmunddantes7097. School shooters don't adhere to that rule.
What a nothing story
So?
Fr 😭
The problem is that she did not know it was there until later in the day.
Even if she was authorized to carry one in school, she would be charged for leaving it unsecured where a student had access to it. That is the main problem, beside it being illegal there.
What a bunch of clowns
This pov is extremely refreshing and his knowledge is eye opening.
When I was a 1st grader we had gun safety classes and knew how to handle any firearm.
This is America circa 2024. We have problems with school shootings and unstable teachers.
Glad you brought the person in the studio!
She seems to be the only one who cares about our kids protection
She reminds me when I first moved to US and put a bottle of wine in the work fridge so it will be chilled for a party I was going to right after work... Didn't even think about it..
lol. that is definitely not okay here, but super efficient on your end haha
I bet they would have been thankful that teacher was armed if there was an active shooter! The school officers are not to be relied upon! You're on your own!
Passing a law for Student carry,
Coming to a school near you, oh what fun, all ages😂😂😂
Is guy that reported her armored as well ?
How many levels are in felonies?
6 I think
Shameful
As a teacher, I’m just curious. I wonder why, when the teacher realized she accidentally had the gun in her bag, why didn’t she excuse herself and take her bag back out to the car? That would have removed the threat and kept her out of trouble.
Nowadays, it’s for protection.
Studies show armed teachers’s students get better grades and always do their homework.
We pay them extra here in Florida!
I like your studio, Jesse, because it’s different! I wouldn’t want to see it changed
From what I understand the states are proposing willing teachers who desire to undergo training to carry on their person, often concealed so no one knows who is armed and who is not. Would the guy in yellow please let us know which states are proposing letting teachers to randomly bring guns in backpacks. If you are going to lay that out at least back it up.
at least she's not boinking the students, shocked
I'm curious if the outcome would have been different if she went to the SRO herself and told him it was an accident and handed it over.
and what's wrong with this? i'm sure she's heard of mass shooters
How does the school know if she plans on using it against staff/students?
@@mannlaura they don't
Seriously!
Home schooling is looking better and better.
I thought we were arming teachers
They are trying to make this legal in Tennessee now
“Like a law enforcement you are held in a higher standard” false
Yeah it's pretty funny when they say that lol the higher standard is no accountability at all
😂 it's like a self defense case that violates human right
What garbage. Teacher lady if you see this you did nothing wrong. Next time be better. Keep it on you and no one sees it or knows about it unless that worst case scenario happens.
If you seriously think she did nothing wrong, then why does she need to "do better"?
WRONG answer!! She’s not above the law and had she or anyone like her followed your “advice” and then gets caught, she’d not only lose her job and never teach again, but I’m sure she’d lose her freedom and be spending some serious time in prison as it is a FELONY!! Ffs 🤦♂️
@@annjepsen1621 she needs to do better by keeping it concealed and not talking about it. *most districts have independently stated they will not allow this.
Here's another police comment about the expected "higher standards" from police & teachers, while similar examples of LEOs carelessness leaving live weapons in bathrooms, etc, BUT NO charges. BS, can't be doing double standards!
Well… at least it’s just a gun
On body carry is always best.
High retention holster is necessary.
Off body carry and loose fitting holster is more problematic. 😕
Okay WTH is going on with female teachers right now. Wildin
Dont blame her for one second, time for reality check. There was a time where hunting rifles and shotguns were allowed in schools and that was by students. Look at historical records.
I graduated in 2011 & I remember my speech teacher told me that kids used to do their “how-to” speech on how to clean a gun lol. And they would bring it in and wouldn’t have to ask or anything (the speech teacher obvi knew). Crazy!
Also some of the “how-to” topics were used by more than one student in the class if it was easy to do for that style of speech, lol, so the gun thing happened more than once.
Yeah, that wasn't smart, Ms. Teacher lady 😮.
Not a smart move till she packs a gun an stops an active shooting 🤡
What if she was just trying to protect her students?

@@veg2489 Love me a what if game don’t u¿
@@TheDoonieDeputy lol yeah
It’s very likely that if it was actually secured nobody would have bat an eye. It’s the fact they it was accessible to the students and not secured.
If she had it well concealed and secured on her body, it probably would have been one of those situations where the SRO and others might “know” but at least play like they don’t know. Sort of a situation of… if I’m openly made aware of something, then I must address it.
I thought this was what people wanted?
Playing devils advocate here.
What if.......
She used that firearm to stop an active shooter?
How would that have played out?
this is crazy. yes she should of had it somewhere more safe but teachers where i live are allowed to have guns for safety
*There ARE a lot of people....
When I was in college, one day I accidentally brought a knife to school. I bought a set of knives on Amazon, and one had a sheath. I opened the Amazon package in my room, and I was in a rush to leave. So I just set my stuff aside, grabbed my things, and left. Somehow I must've grabbed a knife because when I was in class I was going through my purse and the one with the sheath was just sitting in there. It freaked me out. But I didn't tell anyone. I didn't show anyone. It was 1000% an honest mistake. I told my best friend once I was home and it was safely put away. This was years ago. I have absolutely no history of violence or anything and I could never imagine hurting someone.
So with this teacher, if it was an honest mistake, why would she tell a coworker?? There's more to this. I think she was planning on hurting herself or some students.

Teachers should never ever be allowed to carry a gun on school grounds. Imagine they just snap one day
With the way the world is All of the mass shootings/school shootings. I feel that if the teacher goes through certain firearms classes to teach them about the firearms and they’re stored properly, then they should be able to carry a firearm to protect themselves and their students.🤷🏼♂️✌🏼
this is the future republicans want
How is having a gun not safer then not having one? She is not defenseless if a kid tries to shoot her.
Let her go
What's wrong with being armed? Not like the cops are willing to help (Uvalde) you'll need to take care of the children yourself.
"Whoever appeals to the law against their fellow man is either a fool or a coward, he who cannot take care of himself without the law is both"
This is on Trump’s wish list.
In MY OPINION Law&Crime has the wrong way of thinking on this matter, I think they should conceal carry it on their body not anywhere else, the other people on school grounds won’t always help or can’t get there in time so if I was a teacher I’d want to be armed to protect everyone in the classroom.
And I don't want my kid in a classroom with a gun period!

Guns are fine in schools as long as the staff have them. We used to teach gun safety in schools.
Maybe teachers do need protection these days.
Is that a crime?

It's for protection
Better she have a gun in the classroom and not need one than to need one and not have it. The insinuation this video makes is that she was going to use it against the students. She was most likely carrying it to protect them in case of an emergency.
Tennessee will be allowing teachers to carry if they have certifications and I think, given the nature of humanity right now, that is not a bad idea.
You’re on the right track, but it’s obvious you didn’t even watch the video if you have no idea why she had it there in the first place 🤦♂️
The right of the people to keep the bear arms shall not be infringed
Well I can't say.I honestly blame the teacher. There's been a lot of school shootings.Someone has to protect the kids and themselves.I could be wrong but i'm hoping i'm not
Teachers should be able to carry if the states allows it, cops don’t stop active shooters until it’s too late. Just keep the gun locked down safe. Plus it’s a .22😂 I consider that a bb gun.
I have no issue if she’s using it to protect the kids from an active shooter. I’d tell the Jury to nullify her charge.
Nullifying is were a person is guilty of a crime but you don’t agree with the law.
