- A simple Bette Davis quote from the 1949 film 'Beyond the Forest' - 'What a dump' - became a recurring line in the opening of the 1962 Edward Albee play 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf', which in turn was made legendary by Elizabeth Taylor's Academy Award winning performance in the 1966 movie version of the play. Two decades later, Bette comments on Elizabeth's impersonation of her, and Elizabeth reacts to Bette's reaction.
Taylor's performance in that film was beyond amazing.

Actresses can not always choose their roles, they have casting people for that, you can accept or deny, or, if you're very lucky, (and very good) sometimes a role is actually written for you, as in Ms. Taylor's case. Often, it is the producers and even the writers who choose the people for their work. You rarely get to pick and choose all on your own!
I think Elizabeth Taylor is unbelievably underrated as an actress.

I'm convinced that people just say anything online to get likes... How many of you have ever truly watched Elizabeth Taylor in films? She was a terrific actress. You don't just wake up one day, after decades of being horrible, give a phenomenal performance in "Virginia Woolf" and then go back to sucking. She was also hilariously funny and very intelligent. Some of you need to do your research before jumping on the bandwagon of hate.
Agreed. She was fearless. Let's not forget she also played Wilma's mother in the Flinstone's movie and was in the assemble cast of These Old Broads TV movie. I could never see Davis taking those risks. Elizabeth wasn't afraid to laugh at herself.

Crawford was married to the head honcho of Pepsi Co. She broke the man with her crazy spending. She had to take what was offered. Davis had no one taking care of her. Davis was the caretaker.
Hi, Avalanche! The Pepsi executive wasn't really rich in my estimation. Very well off, but not really wealthy as he liked to be seen. Crawford could want a lavish lifestyle as the one she was used to, but he could always refuse. I think Crawford accepted beneath her projects not only for the money but, as Bette Davis, because she liked working a lot. It was a big part of who they were. Did Bette Davis' disabled daughter outlived her? Do you know when she died? I doubt BD had the means to support her sister.
She was one of a kind. In my opinion The Best Motion Picture Actress of our time. R.I.P. Ms. Davis you earned it.

If her Academy Award for the forgettable "Butterfield 8" was seen by many at the time as a sympathy vote following the death of her then-husband Mike Todd in a plane crash, her Oscar for "Virginia Woolf" was very well-deserved. Many critics consider it her finest onscreen performance.

At a young age when the film came out, I saw the movie and was overwhelmed by her performance, not as the glamorous sexy movie star she used to portray, but by her incredible portrayal as mean, vicious Martha. Six years later, I found myself sitting in her Hollywood Hills home, playing piano and entertaining at her party , after I'd written music
for one of her films. She was the opposite of Martha. She was rather quiet, observant, reserved but engaged with everyone in her home. I discovered her eyes were not violet, but rather a gray-blue color which adapted to any color she wore. Her home was filled with books, as she was an avid reader.
I was so taken with her and the events of the evening that I forgot to tell her that her portrayal of Martha was one of the finest film performances ever recorded in motion picture history. Decades after that night, I still watch the Mike Nichols film and descend into tears when she delivers her soliloquy describing her imaginary son.
After she died, I was able to correspond with Haskell Wexler, the cinematographer for the film as well as Alex North who wrote the music. Elizabeth didn't want to do the film, thinking that she "wasn't a good enough actress to play the part of Martha". But with months of Mike Nichols' persistent coaxing as a close friend of the Burtons, he finally made the film happen.
It was actually Nichols that worked on the Burtons long before and during the production, that cemented Richard and Elizabeth into the two roles that were perfect for them, and that would become the legendary acting performances that made Albee's play into a motion picture masterpiece.
The oscar for butterfield wasn't pity for Mike Todd's death, that was 3 years earlier and and she had been nominated twice before in those years, but never got it cause of her bad reputation following the Fisher Reynolds scandal. She won for Butterfield 8 because just a month earlier she was close to death. So yes, it was a pity Oscar, but not for the reason you named.

True, but it was harder for Taylor because she had to transcend her unbelievable beauty to immerse herself in a role. That was always a huge ask. Davis didn't have to deal with that so in a strange way it was an advantage for Davis not to be a world renowned beauty.

Back in 1983 when 'Private Lives' (Liz Taylor/Richard Burton) was playing off Broadway - I was walking home from work one day, and a crowd was gathered outside the theater. I figured either one of the actors were going to come out. I stood across the street in front of another theater (Tommy Tune was standing right next to me waiting as well ). Eventually Elizabeth Taylor came out - I was surprised at how tiny she was - but more than that - she was stunningly beautiful - I love to tell this story!

To me, Elizabeth (she hated being called Liz) was much like Joan Crawford. Both were fantastic actresses, and they have the Oscars to prove it but I tend to see them both more as the ultimate in movie star glamour than serious actress. Though underneath I think Elizabeth’s personality was more raunchy, like one of the boys, than Crawford. Joan took her image SERIOUSLY, on and off screen. Taylor had fun with her image and could laugh at herself. Bette was less glamorous movie star than hard working, serious actress. And the older she got....boy did her sense of humor come alive.
Joan Crawford never accomplished anything remotely as good as Virginia Woolf.

I remember Bette Davis touring Indianapolis @ Clowes Memorial Hall many years ago w/the Bette Davis Show & that was how she opened that her appearance for that combination of talk & edited film clips of her vast career.
Elizabeth in Woolf was a tour de force: emotional violence and Greek tragedy for our modern era. Her brilliant performance and the entire crew made a masterpiece that forever changed the Hollywood code. And she ushered in the 'Oscar Transformation' - an actor radically transforming their appearance - in her case going from a beautiful superstar to a frumpy, greying middle aged harridan - then winning gold. (Think Charlize, Jared, Christian, Heath, Nicole, etc.) Woolf is only one of two films in 100 years to be nominated in every Oscar category. And it gave Bette a huge boost from that one line, a nice plus.
Bette would have absolutely been a sensation had she lived today ....

I used to watch a lot of old movies in TCM and became a fan of Bette Davis. I admire her acting in all kinds of roles and characters whether they are good, bad or ugly. To me, she was and still is the best actress.
When I was a kid, in the 1960s, I didn't know any of these great actors and actresses of the past by name. But I knew certain ones by their face. I watched Bette for the first time in "Dark Victory." Whenever I saw Bette Davis' face on the tv screen after that, I sat still until the end. I knew that was going to be a good movie. RIP Bette. 🧡🙏

My best friend many moons ago gave me a birthday card - it was a color photo of Bette Davis on the front, in her 80’s, holding a martini glass slightly tilted almost spilling, her eyes were a bit crossed and above this she says, “Let’s drink dinner”! Love the humor.

She really was a lousy actress and so was Marilyn Monroe, but when your face is a miracle of nature who needs talent. Even Greta Garbo was all style and little substance as an actress, but the most photogenic face up to that time in cinema. Bette Davis was just a freak of nature and therefore fascinating to watch. For a perfect acting performance see Ingrid Bergman in 'Gaslight', Wendy Hiller in 'Pygmalian', Liv Ullman in 'The Emigrant Saga', Vanessa Redgrave in 'Isadora', and Meryl Streep in anything.

Liz needed a great director to get her engaged and inspired. She responded beautifully to great direction. Davis used to fight with her directors while Taylor utilized them. Two legends.

Elizabeth Taylor was a remarkably talented actress as was Bette Davis. The first time I realised Liz was so good was watching 'cat on a hot tin roof' many years ago. Try it if you have never seen it.
At the end of her life, Bette was trying to get Steel Magnolias made with her, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor. I love that film of course, maybe in another life I can see Bette's version!

The first time I heard that line was on M*A*S*H. Klinger walks into "the swamp " in Bette Davis drag, and exclaims "what a dump!". To which Hawkeye responds "look, the cleaning lady is here ".

She didn't die of lung cancer. It was breast cancer that did her in.
Very true! She looked awful and probably didn't feel that great either, she couldn't have! But she died of breast cancer, not lung cancer, but it could have been either one, when you get cancer, it usually spreads to kill you, only a few cases have a long time survival rate after surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. Terrible disease.
According to Davis herself, she hated that movie and certainly proved it when she went to the production heads (Maybe Jack Warner), and said towards the end of schedule filming, " If you want me to finish the film, let me out of my contract" They did. Rosa according to Bette Davis should have been given to "VIRGINIA MAYO". Davis suffered greatly during the filming. As for the famous line, credit Elizabeth the Great for its own famous interpretation as Bette, who at the time had become a drag queen version of herself, sadly. I had the GREAT privilege of reading with Miss Davis in the final call backs for a musical version of a movie she starred in called "The Corn is Green" , the musical was called "MISS MOFFAT". BETTE DAVIS was so nice and supportive towards me and kind. I was shocked to see how small in height she was, this giant of the screen. It is to this day the greatest moment of my acting life. The director was the legendary Joshua LOGAN.

Marcos Valenca I was not cast, but was according to my agent at the time a "First Choice", for a replacement. Sadly, Miss Davis suffered a bad injury to her back during the out of town tryouts before coming to Broadway and the show closed. BETTE DAVIS WAS NOT REPLACEABLE AND HAD NO UNDERSTUDY.
Barbara always liked to stir something up if she could, and both Bette and Elizabeth were known to be quite sensitive to criticism. I think that is why Elizabeth was careful in her response. E had tremendous respect for Miss Davis.

Awesome old broad. I LOVE her. One fun Brit com Waiting for God is about such hilarious characters in an old's folks home. We used to have Sanford and Son. I love old people comedy. Its funny that a simple line from a B-grade film would catch on like that. Beyond the Forest wasn't a great film and Davis knew it. She would talk of how this film wasn't the best of her career. Having seen the film, I agree with her. However, it speaks volumes of her influence on cinema and how enduring her iconic status is.

The first time Taylor delivers the line in the film, it's not overdone or emphasized. It's not too different from the original. But then as she's trying to get Richard Burton to tell her which movie it came from and only then does she repeat it in the overly theatrical way.
Ughhh barbra Walters is such an embarrassment. Trying to get Elizabeth and she wasn't falling for it.

You never knew what she was going to say . She was refreshingly honest and never pretended to be someone she wasn't off screen .
As much as I admired Joan Crawford's acting ability , she didn't even belong in the same room with Davis . And Elizabeth Taylor was the second most beautiful actress to ever come out of Hollywood .Gene Tierney was #1 .Elizabeth was a good actress , too . Virginia Wolfe proved that
