The reason that batman looks so big is because he was based off of retired football players and how they thicken up after stopping playing. Also he is supposed to be an unstoppable tank throughout. At least thats what the interveiw with frank Miller says in the beginning of the comic

Been a long time since I’ve seen these DKR movies but I remember really enjoying them. As a fan of the comic, I couldn’t really ask for a better adaptation. I’m kinda with you on the Mutants and their speech, though. Anytime someone tries to insert in-canon slang, and then have characters use it relentlessly, it always comes off as jarring.
One thing about the graphic novel, it gets progressively uglier. Earlier images and drawings of Batman are much more colorful and better drawn, then as the book goes on it gets more crude and depressing, especially once Batman switches from the blue/yellow costume to the black/gray one. I don’t know if that was time constraints or intentional on Frank Miller’s part, but it’s interesting either way.
Great video, you’ve gotta Return to the Dark Knight Returns!

    • @a_fine_edition2746
      @a_fine_edition2746 2 года назад +23

Exactly. Which is why I get annoyed when people think this is normal for the character of Batman. It isn’t. He isn’t casually shattering the femurs of purse snatchers, or driving around in a tank and peppering dudes with rubber bullets. The whole point is that it’s an extreme take and not the status quo. But a lot of writers just seem to copy this and expect it to work, when it’s uniqueness and drastic shift was part of the reason it worked in the first place. I don’t want to constantly see a Batman who’s almost unhinged and a second away from snapping. I miss when he could be a troubled and tormented soul, but still have plenty of mental stability. Hell, his intense focus and fortitude is part of the reason I like him so much, and in my opinion doesn’t quite jive well with this sort of rough, brutish interpretation a lot of modern stories go for.

I completely agree with Batman's philosophy, you have to deal with different people according to their mentality. These thugs only understand the language of violence and only respect the strong, and that's how he won them over. With such people a peaceful approach simply does not work, you cannot talk or negotiate with them because that would only embolden them further. Most idealist peace advocates think they can resolve all conflicts by talking while completely ignoring the fact that some people just cannot be reasoned with. We can draw many parrallels between the Dark knight returns and real life. And that's one of the reasons we love Batman, he gets things done because he's a realist not a naive idealist.

But nah, what everyone got from this is that Batman should just be the Punisher but no guns.

    • @waylonbocephus

I always felt Year One was always a more true version of Batman and also Miller’s best work. I feel like TDKR as a comic hasn’t aged particularly well either. When I read it now it feels very dated and something that could only have come out in the 1980s.
I do think it had a good and bad effect as far as how it influenced comics in general. We lost the campiness but gained the try-hard edginess.
Like I started reading Bruce Wayne Fugitive line recently and it felt like it was trying too hard to be edgy on purpose.
I agree with others that Snyder is an idiot in his sort of adaptation of it. He did the same thing with Watchmen just taking a very surface level analysis but nothing deep and meaningful.

You got the billionaire playboy persona he puts out in a business suit, the face of justice in the Batsuit, but what about when hes in the cave/manor with Alfred? Alfred knows his secrets so theres no point in lying and Alfred would call him on that shit too. The age of Chucky from Rugrats in it still makes me think he should have been older by then, even with Batman actually being over 100years old.

As soon as you caught my attention with those I quickly realized you also covered batman and several great tv shows and I'm at the point where I've binged almost your entire upload library. Keep up the awesome work and keep doing what you're doing because you should have way more subs man.

This is not just a good animated Batman movie, it is far and away the best Batman movie(IMHO). I admit, I had my doubts when I heard about Peter Weller being cast as The Bat. Then you started hearing peak Frank Miller dialogue being voiced by Peter Weller and it all makes sense. I imagine if VI thinks Frank Miller thinks poorly of the left, he is going to have a big surprise coming when he gets to part 2. I will not spoil it, but suffice it to say the right gets just as much mockery in the second half of the film as the left does in the beginning. This was true of the comics as well. The Dark Knight Returns is a milestone in comic book history, and this film did it total justice(again IMHO). Finally, a note on Carrie Kelley. When Batman first meets her he is dying from the beating he received at the hands of the Mutant Leader. He really did not have much of a choice but to reveal who he was and where he needed to go. As for her lack of a mask, it seemed to me that Batman tried to keep her as far away from the action as possible(right up to the point where it was not). If you are familiar with the comics or film, you know exactly what point that is. I eagerly await his review of the second half. If he liked part one, he is going to go nuts over the second half. As to the soundtrack, this is a period film(that period being the early to mid 1980s). It is appropriate to the time, but is in no way "modern". Viewers who did not grow up with that type of musical style likely will not like it. Those who did(or are fans of films from the aforementioned time period) are going to love it.
P.S. The music that plays during "The Final Confrontation" that concludes the film IS the Batman theme to me. Christopher Drake wrote a defining piece of music that stands with Zimmer and Elfman as some of the best music ever written for The Bat. Return to The Dark Knight Returns! 'Nuff Said, true believers!

These were great, in my personal opinion! And that's coming from someone who wasn't immediately gripped by the graphic novel of the same name. While, like you (Vee), I very much appreciated the kind of Batman story it was and its content on paper, it's signature art style (that only gets worse in "TDKSA," trust me) was always an obstacle in my enjoyment of the graphic novel. However, I agree that this is such an excellent ADAPTATION in that (for me) it's just enough the look of the comic to be recognizable, but is put through a certain (Bruce Timm) filter that makes it not only more palatable, I'd say even aestheticly pleasing. I also actually love the voice cast for this one, with Peter Weller's Batman being a standout, with also a really great and different Joker and a quite good Superman, as well. All told, this is definitely my definitive way to experience this story! Timm and his team really outdid themselves with this one! (This being the last in the initial wave where Timm was always at the helm.)

I'm glad you like the movie and I am enjoying your breakdown review of it. Something regarding the mutants that you may not be privy to is that Frank Miller when he was writing this the comic. The area he lived in had a gang so all of these words and phrases that the mutants use were actual gang terms that were being used around the city. That's also something that is quite common even to this day to keep cops and other law enforcement from knowing what you're doing was to speak in code.

The one time I liked the Mutant speak if when Batman broke that ones arm and he IMMEDIATELY drops the fake accent and all the slang and just turns into a scared teenage boy. Just shows they're basically just kids trying to sound tough
