Well that is a very kind thing for you to take the time to say. Thank you Fragglrok, I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos! I don't really take requests, because although I don't review, due to the length of time it takes to make each video, I really only want to feature games I'm interested in covering, but I think I have pretty broad tastes, so hopefully you'll continue to find games you're interested in learning about :)
Once again, I have to thank you for your hard work. I have purchased this is a birthday present for a non-gamer relative of mine. Included in the birthday card is a link to this video. Anything more complex than Monopoly can be a bit of a head scratcher for non-gamers, and while this is a pretty simple game, without any gaming experience, even these rules can be daunting. You make a real difference to whether they play it or leave it gathering dust. Great work.
Thanks Rodney! much easier to pre-share these for games night :) your explanations continue to be easy to understand and give a nice feel for the game.
Finally picking this up at the end of 2023, looks like it will be a fun time with the group. Thanks for these videos they really help with my teach of the games.
I placed an order for this because my friend's fiancé really loves bluffing games (I am terrible at them, however I enjoy them as well) and I wanted to have more in my collection that she enjoys. After watching this video, I think they are going to love it! Great video!
Another awesome instructional vid. Thank you! Will be introducing this game at our New Year's Eve party tonight at our youth center. I work with inner city youth and we've been learning lots of new games together! They love Dominion...we'll see if they like this one tonight!
You're awesome Rodney! I bought it, needed some clarification on a couple rules, and you nailed both of them in the video, as usual. Much love, keep it up.
The best tutorial for this game out there. Thank you! A couple of points of confusion (for me!). Let's say a player gets caught trying to get contraband through by the Sheriff, and of course they have to pay a fine equal to the amounts shown on the bottom-right of the contraband cards; who is the fine paid to? Is it added to the player's pot who is playing the Sheriff, or is it paid into the "bank". Likewise, if the Sheriff incorrectly accuses a player of trying to smuggle contraband, is the money paid out of the pot of the person who is playing the Sheriff, or is that also paid out by the bank?
You must pay a fine to the Sheriff for all confiscated Goods. If you were telling the truth, and your bag has exactly what you declared, the Sheriff must pay you Gold equal to the Penalty on every Legal Good in your bag. You'll find examples of this here: ruclips.net/video/ofZS29XArzM/видео.htmlm40s
Thanks for the reply. So then really, all the cash that's in the bank (after all the players have been given their initial 50) starting money is never actually used during the game? I'm a little confused as the initial starting amount is 1x20 5x5 and 5x1 (50) so what's the point of having the coins that have 50 value?
Thanks for another great video Rodney. I picked this up recently and am looking forward to my first play-through, particularly if there's a few drinks involved. I'll share this video with my friends ahead of time to get them up to speed with the rules. Extra fun because I live in Nottingham so that'll help the role play :)
+TheBroz It may be silly, but my childhood enjoyment of Robin Hood always made me want to visit Nottingham - but I suppose you hear that from a lot of North Americans... glad you enjoyed the video!!
***** Come on over! Nottingham is a great city and the surrounding countryside (inc Sherwood Forest) is lovely. Of particular interest to you is that Games Workshop's HQ is here and their Warhammer World is well worth a visit.
went ahead and bought this on Amazon a couple weeks ago should be arriving today or tomorrow XD i used to play it a lot with friends a few years ago but i didn't have my own copy, good to get a refresher on the rules
Good video! Played a 4 player round today and had an interesting situation come up. The person playing the last sheriff before the end of the game was talking with a merchant and said "if you give me one of the apples that you claim is in your bag and you take a cheese from my merchant stand, I will accept your bribe". The idea was that by receiving the apples, the sheriff would become kind of apples and the merchant would become king of cheese. I voted to veto this action as it sounded like bartering instead of a bribe, but the sheriff said he believed it for because bribes can benefit both players. Any thoughts on whether a sheriff can give a merchant something during the inspection phase?
That's a really tough question! Careful reading of the rules would seem to imply that it's the merchants who bribe the sheriff specifically. So two players directly trading goods is not covered by the rules. If your group wants to play that way, it would be a good idea to make sure everyone at the table is fine with it.
Awesome video, extremely helpful! One thing I'm unclear on - How can I promise contraband in my bag as a bribe if I'm only supposed to declare a set number of a certain legal items? At what point (if any) am I allowed to say, "Well actually, there are a couple of crossbows in there, but I'll gladly give you one if you let me pass!"
Remember, once you're into the negotiation step, you can "say" anything you want - no one knows if it's true. You could say: "Well actually, there are a couple of crossbows in there, but I'll gladly give you one if you let me pass!", but you could still be lying, no one knows. The Sheriff has to decide between only two options - let you pass, or open your bag. That's what counts.
Another amazing video on wht looks to be an amazing game :) however pls pls pls reconsider and do a play though Rodney, as I think watching you and Luke trying to out bluff each other would be hillarious :) if you need a third guest I will happily fly over from the uk ;) lol
Hello Rodney. First of all great video! I always love your game videos...they are very informative. I have a question though and I hope I can reach you on this :). With regards to bribing the sheriff at 15:45, how can you bribe the sherrif about contrabands? Isn't it so you cannot declare contrabands in your bag? So isn't it so when you bribe the sherriff contraband, you are already declaring that you have a contraband and it is not a legal good. Sorry just got confused. Also at 16:00, why do you need to prove to the sheriff that you do not have crossbows, just for info purposes?
The example at 15:45 is a special one. Normally, you wouldn't declare to the Sheriff that you have crossbows in your bag, you would say something like "3 Apples!", however, during the negotiations, you are allowed to say something like "Okay, Sheriff, I confess, I may have a crossbow in this bag, HOWEVER, if you let me pass, I will give it to YOU". You could still be lying about having a crossbow in your bag though. You might not have one at all - in which case, you don't have to give the Sheriff anything, if he does indeed let you pass. But you do need to show you didn't have the Crossbow to give him (which is why you reveal the cards to him - to prove that you aren't just trying to keep the crossbow to yourself, that you promised him).
Thanks a lot for the clarification. I really love your videos. It has become my benchmark if I will play a board game or not :) Hope you can have more...perhaps like those game like Jason Hill's /Flying Frog Production "a touch of evil" board games. Looking forward for more! :) thanks again.
Thanks Rod, great video and this game looks great. Clarification - When you're offering a good (contraband or legal) from your bag as a bribe, am I right in believing you must declare a specific good you're offering? As in, you couldn't say, "you can take an item of your choosing."?
Question please, maybe i missed it, but I haven't found anything in the manual: can you earn more money for your bribes? I mean, there are a lot of coins but you nerver use them all... thanks for taking the time to answer
+Dueto Peralta - Smith I'm not sure what you mean by "earning money for your bribes". And yes, the game comes with way more money than you would likely need. My suspicions is that they had room on the token sheet, so rather than leave it blank they just included more tokens.
Thanks Rodney! Great video! I was wondering if you know why the game comes with so many money tokens, when you really only use the ones you start with at the beginning? At the end for scoring, you generally just use the numbers on the cards, do some people "sell" their cards for currency for scoring maybe? I can't figure it out! Thanks regardless, love your content!
I believe it's just because they had room on the token sheet - so rather than leave it blank... more tokens! And yes, some use it to score with at the end.
@ 5:20, you put all of the cards you discarded into a single discard pile. Are you able to divide up the cards you chose to discard into both of the discard piles?
Fluffi Fluffsson I think it's going to depend a lot on the social dynamics of your group. If you can get away with it, sneaking things past the Sheriff is always fun :)
In the market phase you you may set aside up to five cards from your hand (face down), then draw back up to six cards. The cards you set aside, you will have to discard. However, you can discard less than 5 cards (or none at all), and then you still draw as many cards as would be required to bring your hand size back to 6. Hope that helps.
Ahh another great game, will most certainly play this next time when I'm in the Boardgame cafe. One question though: is there any way for players to get more coins from the bank or all throughout the game do the same 50 coins that were given to each player at the start of the game keep circulating between players through bribes and penalties? I didn't see any additional money being introduced to the economy in the video but it seems there are a lot in the game; saw many 50s and 20s in the box. If the max amount of total money is 250 (5 player game) why are there so many coins in the box and does the designated bankperson has any responsabilities aside from breaking up bigger coins to smaller pieces or combining them into bigger coins upon request?
HI, I was just a bit confused a for how do you put items in your sack. does it all have to be the same item? you can't say, let say 3 different items ( cheese, apples, bread)? So does that mean if you are trying to play safe you have to wait until you have multiple of that item? cause I think it is unlikely that you get multiple of the same item, no?
Hey Ralph, you'll want to watch from this point: ruclips.net/video/ofZS29XArzM/видео.html until about 8:36 - that does cover everything, so let me know which part of that may not be clear, and I'll see if I can help further.
has the honor among thieves changed? in my instruction manual it says: "if you promised Goods to the sheriff which are not in your bag or merchant stall, you do not have to pay those Goods (though you must prove that you don't have the Goods promised by showing your cards to the Sheriff)" Does this mean if I promise something from my bag I better know if I also might have it at my stand? aka does this promising now always include your bag and stand at the same time?
You're exactly right about what it says in the rulebook. I talk about this rule at 15:20 in the video. On the other hand, you could also choose to offer them 2 apples directly from your stand.
Watch It Played it just sounds that you were saying that if I offer something from the bag it does not matter if I have it at my stall. This is the wibe I get from the rule
It would be great see Andrea and Luke in a gameplay with Rodney. I bet we would have a lot of fun :). Gameplay of the Dead of Winter was great! A lot of bluff from Rodney eheh :D. The designer of this game is the brazilian Sergio Halaban. Initially it was "Frontier Game", after that "Robin Hood" and now the name "Sheriff of Nottinghan". It was frontier game, becouse some pepople from Brazil used to go to Paraguay buy things (price there was much cheaper than in Brazil). But not every product was legal bring to Brazil (like cigars and other things, and there was a limit of 250 USD). There is a big bridge in the frontier, people used to go by bus, so sometimes when we come back we were not verified in the frontier, some times we were verified and some times the police accept some brabery to not see the productos. Brazil government force them change the name and flavor of the game. So for me, play this game is so exciting like was pass the frontier 20 years ago eheh (I bought my first computer there). It is pretty much was the real life but with a different flavor :).
Question:When you lie to the sheriff and have contraband in your bag, I understand you pay the penalty and it gets confiscated and put into the discard pile. But if you are lying about a legal good, example you said cheese but brought in a chicken, I understand you still pay the penalty. But does the card get confiscated to the discard pile?
Yep, those get discarded too: "Any Goods that you did not truthfully declare are confiscated! The Sheriff takes all of those Goods and places them on one of the discard piles, in any order he chooses.
Hi, I love this game, but I am perplexed by one thing: why did they provide so many coins valued at 50 and 20? There is never a point in the game that you can get more money from the bank, except to exchange coins into other denominations. Why does the game need all those 50s? We just played last night and didn't use any of them.
Jason Jordan Yes, good observation. I suspect it's because they had space on the token sheet for them, so they printed them, but honestly, I have no idea. That would be a question for the publisher.
Hi, in the game there is >1k gold. How is this gold used? and why'd they give us so much if we need only 5*50 = 250 to start and no way of gating any more from the bank? are there any variants in which the gold is used?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
I am unclear on how to handle rounds. Does anyone go through the phases at the same time? When do players draw cards at the end of a turn? It makes sense to me that each player follows his turn order from the merchant card, but most videos mention the Sheriff getting multiple bags at the same time, so this is confusing to me...
This part here might be helpful: ruclips.net/video/ofZS29XArzM/видео.htmlm5s During a round of play, one person is the Sheriff, and everyone else is loading their bags and passing them in (trying to get them accepted). At the end of a round, a new player is Sheriff and you repeat). Hope that helps!
Where does the rule that other players can bribe the sheriff to open your bag come from? I'm not seeing that it is allowed (or that it's not) in the rules. It only mentions that the player being threatened can offer the sheriff a bribe.
Hey Bryan, it's not a rule, so much as a valid method of negotiation. That said, Page 10 gives an example of something similar to this as an indication that this sort of this is allowed (also, having played with the publishers, I've seen it done in practice).
Cool, good to know. We played our first game of this over the weekend, and while we had a lot of fun as it was, the opportunity to bribe the sheriff to open another bag will add even more fun next time we play.
+Tough_Cookiez No, the person who has the most actual money in their pockets/wallet/purse, etc. It's really just a rule they included for fun. You can pick the first player randomly as well.
Can anyone tell me why the game comes with so many coins? There are over 10 coins worth "50", but it is impossible for anyone to have that many coins! At most, a player could have 5 of them, but there are at least 10
if you get coled out by the sharof, revel yor goods, and have 1 contrabaned, 1good you told the truth apout, and 1 legall good you lied about. what hapens
Any Goods that you did not truthfully declare are confiscated. The Sheriff takes all of those Goods and places them on one of the discard piles, in any order he chooses. You must pay a fine to the Sheriff for all confiscated Goods. The fine is equal to the Penalty shown at the bottom of each card.
You don't declare contraband. However, once you enter the negotiation stage, and the Sheriff is thinking about opening your bag, you can really say anything you want.
Okay so you're saying you can declare 3 apples and then when the sheriff acts like he's going to open your bag you could say, "wait, hold on a minute. IF there's a crossbow in there i forgot about, you can have that" and if the sheriff agrees and you don't actually have a crossbow, you still have to reveal to just the sheriff so he knows he got tricked, correct?
So... what's the point of the gold coins worth 50? There are plenty of 20's, to the point where if one player had all the money in a 5 player game there would still be enough 20's to account for that.
When manufacturing a game, they have to cut a certain size of cardboard, based on their other sheets they intend to cut, and that means, you can have extra space on a sheet for cutting more tokens.
I don't often comment on videos, but I really think you are the best source of a simple, understandable explanation of how to play a game. Straightforward, direct, simple, exact ... the best tutorial for board games on youtube by far. Excelente job Rodney
You are very kind.
Great work.
+Paul Sharville Thanks Paul :) I hope your family member has a great time with the game and that the video helps!
Thanks Rodney! much easier to pre-share these for games night :)
your explanations continue to be easy to understand and give a nice feel for the game.
Really nice of you to say - glad to share the games with you :)
Finally picking this up at the end of 2023, looks like it will be a fun time with the group. Thanks for these videos they really help with my teach of the games.
Have a great time playing!
I placed an order for this because my friend's fiancé really loves bluffing games (I am terrible at them, however I enjoy them as well) and I wanted to have more in my collection that she enjoys. After watching this video, I think they are going to love it! Great video!
Hope you guys enjoy. You can bluff, and you can bluff that your bluffing! :)

Great rules video. Loved the Board game replay , but still wish you were doing a play through. Would be cool to see you, Luke, and Pep play.
Jeff Briggs Thanks for the interest Jeff. Hard to say, might be one to cover in a live episode. We'll see.
***** If you ever do a live episode, I want in!
Michael van der Gaag I'll need to get you on a live video of something Michael!
I got into the hobby of board gaming because of this video, and this game! Thanks Rodney for opening up my eyes to the world of modern board gaming!
+Andes Tung Andes, great to have you in the hobby - and thanks for the kind words :)
Andes he also inspired me
You're awesome Rodney! I bought it, needed some clarification on a couple rules, and you nailed both of them in the video, as usual. Much love, keep it up.
Very nice to know the videos were helpful! Thank you :)
This game is basically any Brazilian going back home from the US and going through customs. "Do you have any ipads, iphones, videogames?" "NO"
But with British accents.
É mesmo. Pior que é verdade
By far one of the most fun I've ever had with boardgames
Glad you've been enjoying this game :)

They supply you with many more money tokens then you will likely ever use.
So easy to follow, and a joy to watch you explain games.
Thank you kindly Daniel!
I would absolutely love to see you, Luke and Andrea do a playthrough of this game. It looks hilarious.
+AnonymousInternetPerson001 That would be fun :) Andrea is back at University, so no plans for that currently, but thanks for the interest!
I loved your rules explanations. Thank you for posting! Loving your videos.

Thanks Rod, great video and this game looks great.
Clarification - When you're offering a good (contraband or legal) from your bag as a bribe, am I right in believing you must declare a specific good you're offering? As in, you couldn't say, "you can take an item of your choosing."?
MrMechanoise The rules don't specify that you must declare a type, as fr as I can see. We'll have to see if the Arcane Wonders folks weigh in on this.
You are the only thing that would have been a help to me in this game
Very pleased to have been able to assist!
This was wonderful

Jake Kamps Perhaps to force players to make a choice about which items they most want to bury deeper.
Hi! :) Do you have any suggestions on how to play this game with 2 players?
+Gøran Eilertsen Not sure on that!

So when you put cards into the sack do you draw back up to 6 cards in hand? I’m trying to figure out when you draw cards back to 6
Please check the End of the Round Phase portion of the video.
What if you have 3 different legal goods in your bag? Do you keep all of them or only the one you declared and then pay the penalty for the rest?
As long as your bag isn't checked by the Sheriff, you pay him or her nothing.
In case of inspection though, I will only keep the kind I declared and discard the rest after paying their penalty. Right?
***** Righto.
Thanks a lot Rodney! :)
***** You're welcome :)

They had room to print them on the sheets, so they included lots of extra coins.
Hey Ralph, you'll want to watch from this point: ruclips.net/video/ofZS29XArzM/видео.html until about 8:36 - that does cover everything, so let me know which part of that may not be clear, and I'll see if I can help further.
has the honor among thieves changed? in my instruction manual it says: "if you promised Goods to the sheriff which are not in your bag or merchant stall, you do not have to pay those Goods (though you must prove that you don't have the Goods promised by showing your cards to the Sheriff)"
Does this mean if I promise something from my bag I better know if I also might have it at my stand? aka does this promising now always include your bag and stand at the same time?
You're exactly right about what it says in the rulebook. I talk about this rule at 15:20 in the video. On the other hand, you could also choose to offer them 2 apples directly from your stand.
Watch It Played it just sounds that you were saying that if I offer something from the bag it does not matter if I have it at my stall. This is the wibe I get from the rule
I really liked your video. Thank you
You're very welcome - thanks for checking it out!
+Fernando Simoni That's a pretty interesting look into what it took to bring things over from Paraguay!
You the man! Thanks!
Cheers!
You are the best!👍💙
I always like to stay on the good side of The Joker :)
What do u do when a card with golden banner is found in the bag by sheriff?
Do i put it in discard pile?
They are treated the same as contraband.
I agree with below! Huzzah!
Very very helpful.. THANKS!
Emmanuel Luigi Higuit You're welcome!
Do royal goods function the same as contraband?
Yes.
Watch It Played you are the best
Very useful video! One thing to note: it's pronounced Notting-uhm, not Notting-ham.
Yes, I improved on this in my Brass: Birmingham video :)
Hi, in the game there is >1k gold. How is this gold used? and why'd they give us so much if we need only 5*50 = 250 to start and no way of gating any more from the bank?
are there any variants in which the gold is used?
+Dobri Dimitrov My suspicion is that on the token sheet, they had extra space, so they used it to print additional tokens.
+Dobri Dimitrov The tokens can also be used at the end of the game to make scoring easier. You trade in the cards for gold first.
Awesome game. Looks like a good family game for me. :)
Glad you enjoyed checking out the game Jubei!
Could you do a Sherrif of Nottingham 2nd edition video?
Thanks for the interest! I talk a bit about that here: ruclips.net/video/EdtDuvIUa6A/видео.html&t=342
You're looking awfully clean shaven for Movember 9th Rodney. Was this recorded a while ago, or are you not doing Movember this year?
Ben Reyngoud Both are true. This was recorded a few weeks ago, but I'm also not doing MOvember this year. But I am supporting a few friends who are.
Do all discards have to go to the same pile?
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
Thank you
You're very welcome!
Hi Rodney
Hi Rodney
i love your accent. what part of America are you from? i have a Canadian friend who sounds very similar. :)
I'm from the East Coast of Canada.
awesome. :)
This part here might be helpful: ruclips.net/video/ofZS29XArzM/видео.htmlm5s
During a round of play, one person is the Sheriff, and everyone else is loading their bags and passing them in (trying to get them accepted). At the end of a round, a new player is Sheriff and you repeat). Hope that helps!
Quick question how do i get replacement bags
Thanks for checking out the video! I would suggest sending an email to "customerservice@arcanewonders.com" to request a replacement.
So market phase goes one at a time in turns? That's why this game has been a cluster when we play
Yes, the market phase works as described in this video - hope that helps for your next game!
So the player who is sheriff first is the player with the most money in "card wealth?"
+Tough_Cookiez No, the person who has the most actual money in their pockets/wallet/purse, etc. It's really just a rule they included for fun. You can pick the first player randomly as well.
Can you say you have 1 apple and 2 chese or only 3 apples or 3 chese
You must say 3 of a specific item if that's how many cards you've put in, even if none of them are contraband.
So there is no way to add gold to the game? I didn't see it in the rules or this video, and so I'm not sure.
Correct, during the game, all the players have just the coins that were dealt out at the beginning, to spend and exchange.
@@WatchItPlayedthank you! I thought I was going crazy! Great video, BTW.
Are the storytelling aspects of this game compulsory?
Do you mean the conversations between the players? That is required - but how dramatic you get with it, is up to the players.
Hah, this sounds like fun.
Thanks for checking it out!
you r the best
Thank you kindly.
159% better than reading the instructions.
Thank you for the kind words Rob!
where does the extra coins come into play from the bank?
There is no particular use for them.
Why would silk and pepper be illegal?
That's a good question for the Sheriff :)
How do you choose the first sheriff? Doesnt everyone start with the same amount of money?
The player with the most "actual" cash on them is given the first player marker. Or you can always decide randomly, of course :)
Ah, outside of the game you mean? :)
how much does this game cost?? plzz rep me :)
+Phu nguyen The price will depend on where you live and the store you buy from, so I don't really know.
I bought it for $60 AUD at a game store in the city which was extremely cheap - i.e most games are in the $100+ range.
i thought for sure you already did a how to play of this game....?
Garth Palmer You might have seen the preview I did with Scott Morris.
If the Sheriff had Rodney as his Assistant, Robin wouldn’t have stood a chance…..
I feel very conflicted, as I really like Robin Hood :)
Can I pass counterband legally saying..hey sheriff i have say 3 counterband ??
Hey Sonu, you'll find this covered here: ruclips.net/video/ofZS29XArzM/видео.htmlm2s
15:40 bread says 4+
Yep, make sure that's removed in a 3 player game.
Why is there so many extra punch board coins if each player just has 50 coins
My best guess is that since they had space on the cardboard for more tokens, they just created extra.
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you very much
Can anyone tell me why the game comes with so many coins? There are over 10 coins worth "50", but it is impossible for anyone to have that many coins! At most, a player could have 5 of them, but there are at least 10
+Robert Moore 1) Maybe people lose the coins 2)maybe people change the rules
I've heard they are intended to help keep score at the end when you are awarding King and Queen bonuses and cashing in your goods.
Mainly because they had extra room when on the sheets when they were manufacturing, I believe.
@@WatchItPlayed you dropped this, King.
👑
🤌
@@breezycaesar Ha! :)
if you get coled out by the sharof, revel yor goods, and have 1 contrabaned, 1good you told the truth apout, and 1 legall good you lied about.
Cheeses is not a word
+Joey Jo Jo Jr. Shabadoo III Esq. It is now!
Joey Jo Jo Jr. Shabadoo III Esq. isn’t a name
How do you promise the sheriff contraband if you're not allowed to declare it? ruclips.net/video/ofZS29XArzM/видео.html
Yes, they included a lot of extra money.
Why is there so much money with the game when only a small amount is used?
When manufacturing a game, they have to cut a certain size of cardboard, based on their other sheets they intend to cut, and that means, you can have extra space on a sheet for cutting more tokens.
Looks like this game is gonna get quite noisy .......
It certainly could :)
