@@barfuss2007 I read it in like no time, and that was even when I was only 13. Well ok, back then we didn't have to waste time on facebook and stuff like that. We had the time to read books. :)
Watching the U-Boat sink was like watching a character slowly die. The submarine was really her own character of sorts. When she died so did her Captain. 😔
Notice the three shots of the Captain's face as he watches his U-boat go under. His expression in the first is complete shock, the second is abject sorrow, while the last is a debilitating culmination of mental and physical anguish that he ultimately succumbs to. This shattered my heart... 💔 Jürgen Prochnow and the rest of the cast was incredible.
Buchheim wrote a sequel named "Die Festung" (The Fortress) It´s again about Lt. Werner and the nameless Kapitänleutnant from the first book, who survived his injuries (which was not intended by Buchheim when he wrote the Original ending. It is very clear, that the captain was mortally wounded, and it´s also the last sentence in the book*) *"(...) He opens his mouth like he wants to scream - but finally it´s just blood that spills over his lips"
I saw this movie in the theater when it was released in 1981. I remember on the lobby poster it said "Das Boot", and in smaller print, "The Other Side of World War II". When the air raid siren sounded, I almost jumped out of my seat in shock. I thought, "Oh, no!! After all the crew has been through, they get bombed!" When I left the theater, there was an odd tug at my heart. Even though the Germans were our enemies in WWII, this film portrays them as human beings, doing the job they were ordered to, just like any Allied serviceman. A lot of them didn't make it home, just like a lot of Allied servicemen.
My father was a USN submariner (sonar) at the end of WW II. We watched this when it first came out on VHS. He had a tremendous respect for anyone who volunteered for sub duty - regardless of nationality.
My father, born 1927, had still to be soldier with 16 years in world war II. He told his neighbours would have had two sons, his friends. One son was killed in the Netherlands, the second son, 17 years, was on a submarine. Beginning of April 1945, he was on vacation at home, only a few days before the English army reached our City. The parents said, your brother is dead, the war over in a few days, stay at home, we will hidden you. He answered, yes, the war is over, therefore I will go back to submarine, I do not want, that the German military police caught me and shoot me, a few days for end of the war. I will come back. A few days for end of the war, his submarine had to left the harbour again and it not come back. Dammed war.
there men were attacking unarmed merchant ships, killing unarmed civilians. trying to starve my country and people to death while they brothers were bombing us killing 1,000's , they wiped out more than 1/2 my family. I have nothing but contempt for them.
As impressive as those U Boats are, they are very cramped on the inside. There is a captured German sub, the U-505 on display at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago. If you were tall, you had stay stooped over, so you wouldn't hit your head on all those metal pipes. And there was only 1 latrine available, and no showers and no laundry facilities. At the end of a tour, the mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, blankets and clothes had to be burned, they were gross out filthy. And there was no refrigeration, either. So many times the sailors had to eat spoiled food, even thought the galley cooks tried to disguise it with a lot of flavorings and spices. You have to pay extra to get a guided tour of the inside of the sub, though, but it's worth it.
I once read that when the film was first shown to the British public, some audiences cheered when the information comes up at the beginning stating that of the 40,000 Germans who served on U-boats in WWII, 30,000 did not return -- but those same audiences were silent at the end of the film.
My closest friend from high school (we are now both 62) who's Jewish cheered both the beginning AND this scene. A bit morbid and cold hearted but he is a good guy.
I could not agree more. After what the captain and his crew endured, even limping back to a supposably safe refuge, all of it was for naught. The sight of the skipper watching his beloved ship vanquished in the end was to me one of the saddest scenes in the entire movie. I remember watching this movie when I was still in the navy. I think Prochnow is one of THE greatest actors of all time.
@@flashesofblack4128 I saw this back in 81 I was 6 years old and there is where I learned the concept alone of the captain going down or dying with his ship couldn't have been more truer. And yes Prochnow deserved much more for his performance.😢

Where these men cowardly murderers of unarmed Allied sailors, I say no more than the gigantic armadas of Allied bombers that unleashed millions of tonnes of bombs on German Cities? War has no conscience or sense of understanding!
I once read a saying that "only ants and humans make war on their own kind". It's true! My mother is from Wiesbaden, and she remembers the air raids, running for the basement, going to bed hungry and waking up hungry, there was never enough of anything, and wondering if she would ever see her Papa again (he was in his mid-30s when he was drafted into the Wehrmacht, where he was a payroll master). He came home safe and sound, and he never mentioned the war for the rest of his life. Ever. He was disgusted by the whole thing, and just wanted to be with his wife and three little daughters. He hated Hitler and the Nazi Party and wanted nothing to do with them, but, when you got drafted, you had no choice but to obey. Or face lethal consequences. Whether it's Das Boot, or Saving Private Ryan, it makes you realize how nasty war is, friend or foe. 😢
Notably, you mention allied bombing of German cities , by millions tones of bombs , the Germans did the same thing to countless countries , including British, also having the V1 rockets 🚀 and V 2 rockets , jet engine aircraft!, thank god they didn’t get there hands on a nuclear warhead , imagine that !. Terrifying prospect isn’t it .
@@fabianwylie8707 Yes, very. Germany didn't get nuked because they knew they were defeated and surrendered, whereas the Japanese kept on fighting, even after being warned of "prompt and utter destruction". I understand that Germany and Japan were working on nuclear bombs, too! The U.S. was just a few steps ahead of everybody else! Scary, that.
@@lindaoneil5085 Germany was on the lead with the nukes, but when they surrenderd the Americans took over there scientists and bleu prints and stuff. And only from that moment on, the Americans where ahead of the rest.
@@lindaoneil5085 Part of the reason is simply that the first nuclear test (Trinity) was on July 16, 1945, i.e. over two months after Germany surrendered. And in the last months of the war the damage to all substantial German cities was already so extensive that a nuclear detonation might not have been very convincing, whereas Hiroshima had been deliberately left not attacked so that both the USA and Japan could learn what the effects were. After the war ended it was concluded that neither Japan nor Germany had been working very effectively towards a nuclear bomb, although interestingly although the USA "Manhattan Project" was a vast undertaking, Germany actually spent more than that on the V2 rocket program, i.e. only achieving the ability to drop one ton of explosives quite imprecisely into a target area 200 miles away. Also noteworthy is that at the behest of Leo Szilard, Albert Einstein wrote to President Roosevelt warning of the consequences of Germany creating nuclear weapons - so two Jewish emigres from Nazi-dominated Europe were instrumental in propelling the USA to besting the German efforts.
Probably the best war movie for showing the enemy in a sympathetic light. Pretty historically accurate too. Great use of cameras to show the claustrophobic nature of duty inside a U-Boat and the beards, something German submariners took great pride in on returning from a long patrol, since fresh water was at a premium and usually reserved for cooking.

I bought the VHS tape in the early 1980’s when it became available..German language, English subtitles..Imwas working a full time job, and attending Graduate School in the evenings.. When I got home @ about 11 pm.. I would pop the video in the VCR and watch it in 1/2 increments before ‘hitting the rack..’ So it took me quite a long time to take in the whole 4 hour video. To me me, one of BEST WWII vids ever made. I still bring it out from time to time.
I remember it struck me how small, sad and depressing the celebratory reception was compared to the big, upbeat , exuberant ones earlier in the war. Congratulations boys, you didn't die this time.
This was the time just before the US entered the war. The Royal Navy had learned to deal with U-Boats (as we were able to witness through the movie) and as a result, more and more boats never made it back to their bases. That flotilla was likely pretty far from full strength and had most boats out on patrol, so of course the reception of a returning boat would be pretty depressing. Funfact: When the Americans entered the war, the U-Boats experienced some kind of a second spring for a few months because initially the Americans made just the same mistakes as the British did and subsequently left more opportunities for U-Boats to attack Convoys and slip away before the US Navy could pin them down. This of course changed rather quickly with the Americans gaining experience and receiving advise from the British.
The ending gets me EVERY time! Every time I see this, I get glassy eyed. I say this as a US Navy vet whose late grandfather served in WWII, albeit in the Pacific. I only hope and pray that, in spite of recent world events, we don't fight WWIII. Have we learned nothing?
They had been through it before; unlike the returning submariners, they knew what was coming. The contrast between when they first put out to sea and when they returned to port couldn't have been greater.

They did not take prisoners and no one could surrender to a U-boat. They were trying to starve people. In photographs my family looked like walking cadavers, they were so short of food. I cheer at the end every time I watch the film.
For anyone who does not know, the movie was based on a novel written about a montage of true events (and some made up ones). U96 was sunk In Wilhelmshaven on March 30, 1945 by the US Eighth Air force. She had been a training boat for two yeas and had been decommissioned a month and a half when sunk at the dock. She survived her entire wartime service.

Saddest and most tragic ending in history of film making. Combined with Klaus Doldinger´s haunting music it still makes it my all time number one movie
I saw this when it first came out in a small arts theater in our area: the big theaters wouldn't run it as it was the German version. There was an older man in the lobby with a group of people around him, talking - he had been a u-boat crewman during the war and was attesting to the film's accuracy.
The movie goes back to a novel written bei Lothar-Günther Buchheim who was an actual war correspondent during WW2 and accompanied the real U-96 on a patrol. The names were fictionalized for the movie and Buchheim became Lt. Werner.
I had been studying and decided to catch the midnight matinee at the student union. It was snowing on top of already three feet of snow. I had absolutely NO idea what this funny sounding movie was about but went anyway. Wow! German with English subtitles and was done so fabulously well that I never even noticed i was reading the dialogue. Just a great movie. This was November of 1981when it had just been released.
Das Boot was a tv series then. I watched every episode and the details are stunning, it's exactly like a real U boat inside. The set was a real mockup of a U boat which could move violently. Very chilling and interesting story. I was shocked watching the final episode. Everything they experienced was to no avail and for nothing, like war in reality is as well.
The set was not only a real mockup of the original boat, it still is. I visited it twice. You can walk through it at the bavaria film studios in Munich. All metal, dark, narrow - a true nightmare if you imagine life inside such a thing and everyone around out to kill you.
I dont understand one sign of your letter, but I am sure you love this movie. If you are Japanese or not, I dont know, but you must know that is probably the best european war movie ever. And about our exallies from ww2. Bye!
My brother and I watched this in a theater when it first came out, German with subtitles. The music does a fantastic job of meshing with the action. The music as they are heading back, straining to get home, is totally compelling.
As a child I visited the Bavaria Filmstudios which produced the movie. I was to young to watch the movie back then, and had never heard of it, but they still had the complete internal replica of the U-boot. At least to me as a child, it was like visiting a real submarine. And a surprising amount of it is real metal, not just painted plywood.
I remember watching the tv version in the late 80s or early 90s as a kid and being hooked by it. I remember feeling so sad that having been through all that they did that it ended like that for them. Having subsequently been to the film studio in Munich where it was made and walked through the full size submarine set I’ve no idea how those lads got through endless weeks at sea stuck in one of those.
Awesome anecdote, @kartdriver2009! I might have guided you through the submarine model (and rest of the BavariaFilm premises) as I worked as tour guide there for almost a decade :) When did you visit? Cheers
@@calebh7902 There's no drinking on a German submarine. And there definitely was no drinking on it during the war, unless the Captain explicitly allowed it. However, traditionally there is always one box of beer on a submarine - for when they return to port. That tradition still exists today.
A USN silent service veteran I work with said he and his buddies went and saw this when it was in theatres. He said he and his fellow submariners were rooting for the crew of U-95 by the end.
I normally roll my eyes when people give out acting superlatives. But with all honesty, i can say the acting in this film is out of this world especially from the Captain, the Chief & Johan.
My cousin's grandfather from Dublin was master of the merchantman Silvercedar on the Atlantic Convoys when she was sunk by U553 in 1941. He was lost, with 18 crew, 2 gunners and a passenger. Some facts: The captain was actually Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock. He served as an ensign on the "Karlsruhe", later trained officers for the Reichsmarine. He then took over an old U5 before being promoted to Lieutenant First Grade (Kapitänleutnant zur See) and finally got the command of U96, on which the movie plays, later U305 (he actually survived the harbor attack ...) and after the war of the "Otto Hahn", the first and only German freighter that had an atomic reactor as main energy source. The Ensign who was present on U96 (which ran on ground not as spectacular as shown to over 280 meter ever, but actually did two times at a depth of 50 and 70 meter) was Buchheim, the author of "Das Boot" which was the novel behind this movie. Willenbrock and Buchheim were good friends and the captain was actually a mentor of Buchheim and proof read his novel after it was finished. But their friendship ended in 1986, when Willenbrock spoke very positive about the German submariners without any critics on the political background of the Nazi war they participated in. Buchheim was disgusted by that and told that to his former idol. Only weeks after, Willenbrock, "the old man", finally died, after he had actually received the German Federal Cross of Merit a decade earlier, the highest civil medal you can ever achieve in our country. Buchheim died in 2007. Their friendship was destroyed by the fact that Buchheim distanced himself from everything the Wehrmacht had made him do while Willenbrock, albeit never a convinced Nazi, stayed fond of the Wehrmacht and defended their actions, especially the submarine force. After everything we learned from Buchheim, I gotta come to the conclusion, that he was the one who was right.
This is one of the two best WW2 naval films that have been made, the other being The Cruel Sea. Even as someone who is British, the end scene makes me extremely sad: these men were heroes despite the evil of the regime they fought for. They just did their duty and they deserved a better fate.
Actually, the U-96 was sunk in the very end of the war at 45, after having been retired from front line service for more than two years. And the captain of U-96, fregattenkapitan Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock survived the war and was consulting the filmmaking, died a few years after the film was released. But, great film still. One of the best, if not the best. Despite of inaccuracies.
Before I watched this film, I could never have imagined to ever hate the allies. Being British, I naturally lean toward the allies in war films. But this film got you so invested in the characters, you lived and breathed their ups and downs. You were elated when they made it home. Then the allies attack by air and most of them die and the boat sinks, after having endured and survived so much. For that moment you despise the allies. That is good movie making.
Haven't watched the movie....does it show this u-boat sinking merchant shipping and leaving thousands of men to die in the water...or surfacing and shooting the survivors in cold blood? Because that's what really happened. No sympathy for them.
@@arthapeterson5239 Since you didn't watch the movie, they also showed how they sank a ship with a "Fangschuss" (a final torpedo to make the ship sink), assuming that the allies would have rescued the people on board by then. As they realized there were actually people on board, they were crying, as they couldn't rescue them. Just one little advise to you: don't make comments about a movie you haven't watched. Wars are cruel and no nation has been a saint in history. In a way, in particular with this ending, it is a anti war movie.
I could not have said it any better...I cried as you cannot help but feel the agony and helplessness they endured...We're Going Home !!! only to die...
@@arthapeterson5239 Indeed, there are without doubt many incidents were Germans committed unspeakable atrocities, but also many incidents where Germans have shown resistance and helped victims of the 3rd Reich. In that context a lot of the resistance came actually from within the German army (e.g. Stauffenberg, among others). But in a fascist autocratic regime resistance is difficult as can be sadly witnessed today in Russia. If Trump wins the next election, the US might head into that direction too. The point is that you made a fool out of yourself by making a comment about a movie you have not even seen and could not possibly get the message behind it just from short clips on youtube.

This ending is what made me appreciate how much this is an anti-war film. No matter if something “good” happens, war always results in death and destruction, regardless of how good you feel

I'd forgotten how poignant that film was. My folks came from the Germanies in the 1840s and we've kept a smattering of the language alive in the family all these generations. The impact of the film was immense, even though my dad had fought against the Third Reich at the Bulge and elsewhere.
Just a bit of solace: The submarine will likely be raised and refloated once again because it was sunk in the shallow waters of the harbor. Many Uboats were resurrected this way.
This movie has grown to be the stereotypical of the genre, so much so that in most submarine warfare videos today you hear the classical "Das Boot" background music that identifies this great film.
I heard the actors were asked if they want their character to survive or to die at the end, except Jürgen Prochnow (captain) and Herbert Grönemeyer (war reporter). The captain had to die, the reporter had to live, to tell the story.
I do love the movie, the book, the history. And I´m so proud my family touched the story of the Battle of Atlantic, as my grandmother served as a WAAF at 311 coastal Squadron RAF (1942-1944). Our 311 sunk, if I remember well, 5 german U-boats.

For me as a fan since primary school that scene is not only great but also very sentimental. I have ready whole book and watched movie many times and I think that the ending is purely magnificent. Especially after what that brave uboat crew came through. Captain dies among with his sub literally.

Buchheim wrote a sequel named "Die Festung" (The Fortress)
It´s again about Lt. Werner and the nameless Kapitänleutnant from the first book, who survived his injuries (which was not intended by Buchheim when he wrote the Original ending. It is very clear, that the captain was mortally wounded, and it´s also the last sentence in the book*)
*"(...) He opens his mouth like he wants to scream - but finally it´s just blood that spills over his lips"
The boat was his life. When it died, he died.
Dammed war.

I cannot blame the Brits for this. I couldn't have joined in their cheers, but I cannot blame them.
The United States Navy lost about the same amount of sailors who served in the “ silent service “ only them historical facts are Judy…..
Bomber Command lost more men. War is hell.

I am British, my great uncle Ralph was a merchant seaman, torpedoed twice and came ashore in nothing but his underpants! He survived. This movie is one of my absolute favourites because it gives you the perspective from the other side! Young German men ordered out to sea to tackle the Royal Navy and above all sink the goods and supplies that maintain it!
Rest in peace Wolfgang Peterson. Thank you for such an incredible film.

I would pop the video in the VCR and watch it in 1/2 increments before ‘hitting the rack..’
So it took me quite a long time to take in the whole 4 hour video.
One of the best war films ever..from start to finish. Great characters. What an ending!
The ending gets me EVERY time! Every time I see this, I get glassy eyed. I say this as a US Navy vet whose late grandfather served in WWII, albeit in the Pacific. I only hope and pray that, in spite of recent world events, we don't fight WWIII. Have we learned nothing?
5:15 The screams of those civilians and sailors as they see whats coming gives me chills every time.
They had been through it before; unlike the returning submariners, they knew what was coming. The contrast between when they first put out to sea and when they returned to port couldn't have been greater.

Indeed it is very moving, but just remember that they were deliberately attacking civilian vessels, most of them carrying the necessities for life. They did not take prisoners and no one could surrender to a U-boat. They were trying to starve people. In photographs my family looked like walking cadavers, they were so short of food. I cheer at the end every time I watch the film.

5 hour version is so worth watching. Beautiful.

Combined with Klaus Doldinger´s haunting music it still makes it my all time number one movie
sad? Nazi soldiers seeing their cruel toy to be destroyed?

Wow! This film stuck with me throughout my life, the enclosed anxiety and suspension was excellent.
I had only seen clips and didn't realize it was a TV series. They did and extraordinary job, even compared to big screen modern films.
The set was not only a real mockup of the original boat, it still is. I visited it twice. You can walk through it at the bavaria film studios in Munich. All metal, dark, narrow - a true nightmare if you imagine life inside such a thing and everyone around out to kill you.

True!
This movie is absolutely amazing.
They literally survived everything just to be killed on land! What a sad ending to an excellent movie!
I saw it when it came out as well. A riveting masterpiece.
One of the best war movies of all time
I remember watching the tv version in the late 80s or early 90s as a kid and being hooked by it. I remember feeling so sad that having been through all that they did that it ended like that for them. Having subsequently been to the film studio in Munich where it was made and walked through the full size submarine set I’ve no idea how those lads got through endless weeks at sea stuck in one of those.
Lots of alcohol
Awesome anecdote, @kartdriver2009! I might have guided you through the submarine model (and rest of the BavariaFilm premises) as I worked as tour guide there for almost a decade :) When did you visit? Cheers
@@petecamsky9293 I was there in August 2009

Exhilarating scene, the U boat refusing to die rising up and racing across the sea. But the war is lost sadly for her.
My cousin's grandfather from Dublin was master of the merchantman Silvercedar on the Atlantic Convoys when she was sunk by U553 in 1941. He was lost, with 18 crew, 2 gunners and a passenger. U553 disappeared without trace in the North Atlantic in 1943 and is believed to have sunk with all hands following a technical problem. My uncle was born 8 months after Silvercedar was lost, so he never got to meet his father. There are no winners.

The record of the song was done by a Russian men’s chorus.
"all quiet on the western front" is my favorite, followed by "Dunkirk", although I am looking forward to the film on operation mincemeat!
Great, great movie, and the best music.
The ending made me very emotional when I have seen it for the first time, and it still does
Seeing the U-96 sink in the end always breaks my heart.
RIP Wolfgang Petersen
Some facts:
The captain was actually Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock.
FYI: The U-Boat mockup is the same one later used in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
Watched this as kid. Was blown away by the awesomeness. Epic. Loved it.
@@ralfwk There's movie history, then there's real history.

You feel happy when the men overcome their predicament and arrive in the harbor, but war is not happy ending and good feelings. No matter if something “good” happens, war always results in death and destruction, regardless of how good you feel

No heroic ending , no respite or mercy . So is the nature of war as it is brutal and senseless.
And this movie nailed it
One of the greatest movies ever. The entire cast was incredible!
