I think the saddest part about Ermac's design is that if you watch the audience's reaction to Ermac at SDCC, you'll notice that barely anyone cheered for him because they could not recognize him at all. It's ironic that Ermac is more recognizable when his face is covered up rather than exposed, although I guess that can go for any of the ninja characters.
I've been feeling that since the first trailer tbh, as far as the ninjas go. The hyper realistic graphics and simplified costumes just have a lot of them looking like...some guy. If you took off the ninja masks and had them all stand side by side with Raiden and Kung Lao as well I wouldn't be able to tell you who is who... and I guess you could say that's always been true but at least the costumes were designed in a way to give instant recognition. Now that they're just normal clothes you really have to rely strictly on the color coding. Which I guess is a throwback in its own way.
I saw the trailer immediately I woke up from sleep and had no idea who that was lmaoooo. It was knowledge of the leaks that made me go ERMAC?? NO FREAKING WAY lmaoooo
When I saw that "Ermac" was in the trailer I couldn't pinpoint which one he was supposed to be
Yeah, I was in the crowd there and I entirely thought he was an obscure 3D era kharacter or something, only realized it was Ermac when I looked it up afterwards
If anything as a nice compromise (or scummy sales tactic), DLC costumes is a option. I know it makes wonderful sense for series like Street Fighter where you get bored of seeing SFII versions of Ryu, Chun-Li, and Guile as default looks all the time.

Love the Deception Alt. He is going through his hero arc and becoming comfortable with himself as a freed soul and that skin shows that as he isn't wrapping himself up in shane. My favorite costume of all time.
Exactly, this guy gets it. The design has to incorporate who they are and tell you stories like this. If its just a general cool design but doesnt suit the character, its then a weak design. Him revealing his own form is both key to identifying the character's unique attributes and simultaneously distinguishing him from the rest.
While they could do better at making a good design in this direction, that direction is still key, as without it it's simply more generic

I’d love to hear you do a visual history for Rain next! He has had appearances from MK3, to Armageddon, 9, X, 11, and now 1. All designs that Rain has had have been extremely different than both Reptile and Ermac.

Love Ermac's alternate costume in MK9. It's easily his best design. Some of his concept art in the MK9 book looks way better than his primary they went with. But to each their own.
MK9’s second Ermac costume is perfect.
His entrance in MK9’s story is amazing too.
I agree, his alt outfit in MK9 is the best, but I also like so.e of the others. I actually don't think his unused MK11 outfit is as good as Max views it.
@@ThatPrettyStrongBMF Yeah exactly. I think Ermac’s MK11 design was great for the way MK11 looked where everyone and everything was over the top. Now that it’s back to basics, I think they should bring make his MK9 design.

Of all the OG ninja pallet swap colors, red was always the best looking, imo, and I love his backstory, especially when it was revealed the lead soul is Kitana’s father to explain why he turned good, and the fact that he has telekinesis. His MK 9 outfits, especially his alternate, are not only, EASILY, his two best outfits, but two of the best of any character in MK history.
Ermac’s 3D era specifically deception and shaolin monks alongside his mk9 designs are the pinnacle of Ermac designs in my opinion, he has this vibe of a psychic desert sage, I always liked the idea he wore baggy clothing and covered his body in bandages because he’s got 1000’s of souls inside him that he needs to keep balanced and under control, and if any of them see a reflection of themselves in a body that isn’t their own well I think chaos erupts in Ermac it’s pure panic for them so it’s just easier to cover your body, I never liked the idea that he’s an undead mummified zombie, I prefer when he looked mixed race with darker skin in the early games, cus yeah if your bodies a construct made of 1000’s of souls especially those from edenia you’d be mixed race just a bunch of question marks tbh ??? I’d love if they threw in features from other outworld people, like mild tarkat fangs, or zateran scales at points on his body, maybe he gets phantom limb pains from the shokan or vampires within him from extra arms and wings he never grew, just this alchemical/ chimera/ homunculus combination of parts with boundless psychic energy, surviving as a desert sage in the wilds of outworld, he’s either a shao Kahn slave or in the og timeline when kenshi sets him free he’s a wandering sage and champion, he’s Ermac.
Damn, this comment says it all. I never bought the idea that he's gotta be a mummy boy just because he's a reunion of souls. I see many people justifying his appearance in MK X/MK 1 with that, but you have plenty of possible design choices that fit his lore and actually he being a mummy is not a good one imo, and that's what makes me agree with Max when he says someone at NRS has a thing for mummies.
@@ColonDee. honestly I think if you get rid of the mummy/undead look and try to realistically worldbuild a character with 1000’s of people within themself Ermac becomes so much more interesting, the sorts of things they’d choose to do how they’d dress the solitude they would want to live in, they’re a collective, possibly at genius levels, I want to see Ermac as this wandering sage a hermit across outworld, being a champion for good, almost an artificial god filling raidens role for outworld since shao Kahn abandoned the role to rule, give him spooky vibes it suits him but he doesn’t need to be decomposing to do it, the undead look is cheap character design in favour of a neglected story
Ermac is a pretty much an April Fool's joke everyone took seriously
It was more of a code thing where the name Ermac5 popped up in diagnostics and it was supposed to mean error macro. Players were invested in finding something harder to find like with Reptile in MK1. Then EGM screwed with people by making a photoshop.
They dropped the ball with him in 11. Possibly his sickest design!

His MK9 costumes are the best.
MK11 was a bit overdesigned, still a thousand times better tho

Every SC game looked great and still do not everything need to be like MK realism style can only do so much still need stylize mix in. And it does have the money it’s own by Namco. Their focus is Tekken atm.
@@NaughtyJuri Namco has money but they never gave Soul Calibur any budget so the original comment is still true.
They're STILL using the character models from Soul Calibur IV and slightly improving them with each game. It's hilarious, lol

Cyrax/Sektor/Smoke would be interesting to see. especially smoke with being 3 different forms throughout the games
It is rumored that Raiden reset the timeline in MK9 not because of Onaga but because he saw that Ermac was being done dirty for decades

personally the mkx version was my favorite design. i love how they took his mk9 alt costume and really made it look like he was falling apart without shang tsung to maintain him

Well, he's an amalgamation of souls, so in my opinion, it would make sense why they made him like that now.
He wasn’t a mummy until mkx, he was more of a necromancer in Armageddon to mk9

Ermac's history I remember fondly from the days of EGM. He is from the original Mortal Kombat. A photo was published of someone taking the "Ermac Wins" screencap in the magazine. It is the oldest history I can think of for Ermac. Back then, there were guesses on what Ermac actually meant, whether it was "Error Macro" or "Error Machine". Macro makes more sense. There was no info on Ermac other than that one published pic. He will always be one of the original 4, at least to me.

I have always thought of Ermac as a perfect fusion of a ninja AND a sorcerer. It’s why my favorite looks of his are the ones where he has robes like a sorcerer but they are form fitting and with a badass hood and mask.
The thing I love about this series already is the honest opinions and really, to see how far we've came with video game graphics.
You should make a regular series out of this Max and do other gaming franchise characters too.

@@emiami458 the mummy from the first mummy movie looked better than ermac does in MK1 so that should say alot considering that movie is from the 90's, netherealm keeps trying with the "mummy" motif for ermac and has failed pretty much every time and they've been trying for going on damn near 2 decades now... they should just move past "mummy" and just make him a revenant cuz at least as a revenant soul snatching would make alot more sense than it does for a mummy

Of all the ninjas i feel like rain got the best end of the deal when it comes to designs with maybe scorpion and the cyborgs being above him

This is such a great series already. Others have said it, but I really hope we get a ton of more of these, not just from MK but other fighting games too, breaking down visual and even gameplay changes from game to game.
If Ermac doesn’t have a mask the next time we see him in MK1 I’ll be pretty surprised.

It's true that Ermac is short for error macro, but the thing is - they made the Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Reptile sprites in MK2 by dressing a guy in a red ninja suit. When you went into the arcade machine's settings menu, if you went into the ermac menu and looked around, you'd find the non-pallet version of the MK2 ninjas - meaning a ninja in red. He HAD to be a ninja in red in the next game.
Oh dear god. I didnt realize that was Ermac in the MK1 DLC announcement trailer. I just wrote him off as a weird take on Martian Manhunter and didnt think anything else of it
I love Ermac too. I really hope his MK11 outfit will be his alternate outfit in MK1 so that we can make up for what we saw in the Kombat Pack trailer or give him what he wore on MK9 with the hood

You're probably thinking of Ermac being in MK4 because of Scorpion's Alternate color which is close to the same Orange/Red colors he has in UMK3.

Ermac's base MK9 design is my favorite and I think it's the best he's ever looked. His alternate is pretty good but something about his first design I just like a lot more

You know what I realized? Ermac has the same color palette as Spawn; black and red with green energy. Probably another contributing factor to why Max loves him so much.

My guess is they probably weren't done designing him like how they introduced Joker early on Kombat Pack 1 trailer. At launch hopefully Ermac will look a lot better.
I’m hoping that he just isn’t wearing a mask for the reveal. In the trailer with Reptile he spends quite a bit of time without the mask, but in gameplay he wears it often. Hoping Ermac is similar.

Honestly even if they DO cover his face in the gameplay, he still looks awful cuz so much of his body is still uncovered. He looks like a gross-ass hollow from Dark Souls.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think in MK11 they redesigned Joker’s face after his initial reveal got backlash. The same thing could happen here with Ermac.
Yeah they need to seriously redesign him or scrap that costume and replace it with the mk11 one
Ah, I'm sorry but that's kind of a cope haha. Like, all of the ninjas have had their intended look on their reveal, with their cool masks and all, this is (and hopefully _was_ ) his intended look when that trailer came out.
Thanks from Ermac main. It is always nice to hear that Allen Snider theme during the outro. It has always been a strange phenomenon of a track imo so I always thought back to it. Nice to know other people appreciate it.

Honestly Ermac in the 3D era is a solid 9/10 for me cuz and so is his MK9/MK2011 design too. I liked the headwraps to differentiate him alongside his weird amulet thing.

I’m always a defender of MK9/X Ermac and Reptile. I think they’re fun ways to differentiate them from the other humanoid ninjas, whilst still keeping the Ninja aesthetics.
Max been out of leauge because ermacnabd others has been there own thing for a long time 2 decades. Ermac has look like a mummy reptile impress his true form. Smoke become a robot. Rain become just himself

I think the main thing is this idea that we want MK to look gross and visceral until the gross-looking thing is the characters? Me, personally, I want to play an absolute freak in this game themed around gratuitous violence

Believe it was 1 where Error Macro originally became a thing. A player sent in a report of fighting a red Scorpion in the Warrior shrine stage called Ermac. But then it was in 2 where they started screwing with people about it cause Ed Boon is Ed Boon. Then finally UMK3 and he's finally here. The original story of Ermac appearing in the Warrior shrine is referenced in Shaolin Monks as that is where his optional boss fight takes place.
Can we do all the ninjas? Has he mentioned wanted to cover them all?

MK11 Ermac might be one of the biggest robberies in gaming. I remember going to get his amulet and just staring at how fucking awesome he looked.

Given how NRS is hopefully still listening to us, they'll most likely redesign him a bit before release. They fixed The Joker's face back in his MK11 reveal, so they could easily do the same here for Mr. Ermac.
