last min revision boys
last 4 hours anybody?
great video! may i ask how ‘take their life’ shows that they are created by their parents? i’d like to use the idea of that quote having a double meaning but i don’t really understand how it does
Thank you and thanks also for the question. The word 'take' is defined in more than 100 ways in the OED, but I am thinking about 'take' in the sense of 'accepting something from' or 'assuming a particular form because of'. So they TAKE their lives from their parents in the sense that they're given those lives by their parents and they take the form they do because of that. Of course, there is then the secondary sense that later in the play they TAKE their lives - in that they kill themselves. I hope that's helpful, but do get back to me if you have any other questions.

Hello i was wondering if someone could help me with the exact acts and scenes from which the qoutes are thank you
Good question: the references can be found underneath each quote in the format ACT/SCENE/LINE - so 1.1.25 would be Act 1, Scene 1, Line 25. Hope that helps!
Dr Aidan thanks my literary essay is tomorrow I hope I get a good grade
Good luck…
You too brother

Can you do themes and characters in Frankenstein by mary Shelley and DNA by Dennis Kelly please would be very helpful
Thanks for your suggestion. I will put them on my list!
are there any quotes from act 1 that show fate vs free will?
A very good question.
I would look in Act 1, Scene 4. If you want one quote that you can discuss try Romeo's lines:
'You have dancing shoes
With nimble soles, I have soul of lead
So stakes me to the ground I cannot move.'
(1.4.14-16)
This sums up the quandary he finds himself in. They Montague boys want to go to the Capulet ball - they are keen and so have feet that want to dance at the ball.
Romeo also wants to go to the ball to see Rosaline but, as we will soon discover, he has a sense of foreboding (a premonition of his own death - see 1.4.109-10). That's why he uses the pun on 'sole' to say he has a 'soul of lead': this communicates that his heart and feet are metaphorically 'heavy' and don't want to carry him to the ball.
You can then link it to the Queen Mab speech - where Mercutio convinces him to ignore fate and go to the ball - and then end your discussion with reference to lines 1.4.106-113 where he voices his continuing concern that his fate will be death, BUT decides to abandon himself to that fate and goes with the rest of the Montagues.
Hope that's useful, but if you still have questions send me another note.
Dr Aidan I need another example of fate vs free will. Is that fine?
@@sonjhitle4326 Fate versus Free Will is not as overt in this play as, say, Macbeth, so the links are subtler. You could start by discussing the sense that these two lovers are fated to die by quoting the Prologue - they are after all, 'star-crossed lovers': Fate seems to have decided their future in advance as a way of reuniting the two warring families.
You could then use moments like the one I mentioned from 1.4 to discuss the role of free will. Other examples might be where Juliet discovers 'her only love sprung from (her) only hate' in 1.5.137. She could stay with 'hating' the Montagues, but she decides to pursue love instead.
If you can go outside Act 1 you can then discuss Romeo's decision to climb back over the wall into the orchard to meet Juliet (Act 2 Scene 2). He had a choice there.
Lastly, you could reflect on these lines from Act 5, Scene 3:
'See what a scourge is laid upon your hate, /
That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love;
(3.3.292-3)
Heavenlyhatred by creating the circumstances by which this hatred is punished (scourged) by love which, ironically, kills their 'joys' (Romeo and Juliet)in the process.
This suggests that the Capulets and Montagues exercised their free will to hate each other, and heaven provides the FATED remedy by making their children fall in love.
You can then speculate about where free will starts and ends - do they have free will to love but not to hate?
Hope that is useful.
please upload the 4th key theme ASAP!
Hisham. Thank you for your comment: the fourth video is now available. I hope it is useful.
