Type R owner here, who has also spent considerable time in both 6mt 2.0t accords and 10th gen SIs. Yes, the type R is worth it. It's oddly more practical than a SI being a hatchback and all, you get plenty of room inside, its comfortable for long road trips (I've done 18+ hours each way in mine). Mine has been super reliable, unlike SIs can be when you start to modify them to make power, and my FBO tuned 450+ whp baby will even give me 33 mpg on the highway. If everyone were honest, the ONLY reason you wouldn't get one is because of the price, and MAYBE the hotwheel like styling *which everyone who sees it nesr me seems to love!*. But if you haven't been able to, you can't imagine why someone would pay for one and you'll swear they aren't worth it, and what you have now is good enough.
How do you get that kinda mileage? I’m getting 24 mpgs on stock (18’ wheels and catback invidia w/front pipe, but no tune) but I do a lot of hwy driving

Of course, this is mostly just me justifying not being able to afford a type R…
Both cars are amazing for what they do. Both literally do everything you need for your everyday practicality. I chose the Si over the R mainly for 2 factors. 1. The mpg. We get up to 38mpg on the si considering I was doing a lot of highway driving. About 150 x 5 miles for work a week. 2. The price, I can never see myself overpaying for any car in general. When I was in the market all the R’s were 50k new in SoCal and used were around $42k. If I had looked a few month prior the spike then I probably would have gotten the R. Would I get one now?? That depends on the market. If the price is right then yes it is definitely worth it. If you don’t care for all the “track oriented” components from the R, then the si is a good choice too.
If you intent to go balls to the wall into corners and on the track the Type R is worth it. You don't buy a Type R for the extra power it has over the SI, you get a Type R because how good the handling and aero is out of the box. You can actually feel the car being pressed to the road the faster you go and I love it.
I was never really into honda cars until I drove a type r. Then finally made my mind of buying one! It was either a sti or a ctr but the ctr just handle different and have more characters!
@@clugokillscluco realistically, no. Truth is the l15s cannot hold too much power. Fbo si vs stock type r. The si would keep up at best. Whoever wins would be based on driver. But the type r is faster.
Back in the day, I used to own a first-gen Honda CRX. Even though it was a base trim, I loved that car. It was a sad day when I had to let that car go because I did not have the money to fix it and bring out its full potential. Years later I now own an FK8 Honda Civic Type R and the car drives like a dream. I look for excuses to drive it and even with today's insane gas prices, the car gets incredible MPGs when you consider its performance. Every time I drive it I know it is something special. I absolutely love the aggressive styling and the car puts a smile on my face every time I look at it. I was able to get this car at MSRP and never plan on selling it but it does not hurt that the car is worth more money now than when I bought it. I truly believe the FK8 is a future collectible that will only be more sought after as time goes on.
In terms of upgrading The Type R will always be superior to the SI in every aspect. It has more power, better handling, looks more aggressive in my opinion and most importantly it’s a one of kind car that is different than most basic looking cars nowadays. It’s also a car that set a record on the Nerinburg ring beating exotic and much superior cars than the R. For me the R will be a car that over the years it will be very hard to get.
i own a white 2019 Type R everyone drives basic civic and SI, the Type R is a neckbreaker it just screams loud "look at me" in the road, worth every penny do not ever plan on selling it i love the attention i get from it.
I really want a type R but I ended up going with a 2019 Si in 2020 just before this crazy car market shot up. I couldn’t pass up $21,500 out the door with 7,500 miles on it. But perhaps one day I’ll have a type R to sit next to my Si. I’m also hoping if they don’t make the coupe Si anymore that my coupe will hold some value.
I love the idea of the Type R, but the 10th gen looked way too crazy for my mid-thirties self, so I bought an Accord 2.0T 6spd instead. The spy shots of the 11th gen look much more sedate, though...
I'm not even thirty yet, but the 10th-gen Type R is horrifically ugly! I dislike the styling of that entire generation of Civics, but the Type R is by far the worst offender.
I’m approaching my 30’s myself and could’t imagine dailying a 10th gen si although I drive an FA5. With that being said, I really like the 11th gen civics and would highly consider the si if I had to buy a new car.
@@JobiWan144 10th gen ctr/Fk8 was inspired by Lamborghini according to Honda head Daisuke Tsutamori. The 11th gen FE2 will not be inspired by lambo, but something far more tame sadly.
I've always loved k series engines so I can't jump in the new si's and be happy with the 1.5t..however the styling of the 10th gen type R has always been overdone imo. This is one difference I'm happy about with the 11th gen, however, they tamed the styling, made aero more functional and made it over all fit in more with the rest of the lineup. I personally wish we had the packaging of an SI with the guts of a type R.
Keeping my Rallye Red 2012 FG4. I could get a Type-R, but i know i would regret selling my Si and there is no point having two Civics unless im tracking one of them.
I agree with you on regretting selling the si. I myself have a tafetta white 2012 fb6 and couldn't be happier with the car especially as a daily driver so with that being said I'll save up for a type r and have best of both worlds!
Ill keep rolling in my ek9 type r even tho its not apart of the question ill pick a old school Honda any day they dont make them like they used to along with my s13 n em1
Upgraded from a 2020 Si Coupe to a 2018 Type-R. 100% worth it, they feel like completely different cars. You'll know the moment you drive one. The Type-R feels stiffer in Comfort mode than the Si in Sport mode if that tells you anything. I will say the Si is a great car in it's own right, especially at it's MSRP. The Type-R is just better in every metric but gas mileage. The gap between the two cars is far greater than I expected.
do not regret my 19 ctr whatsoever. i don’t think the styling isn’t too crazy. i love the looks. the drivability is amazing. the power the comfort the handling. i get decent gas mileage so im a little jealous of the si mpg. would go type r all day every day
I was really close on getting a FK8 TYPE R, but rain and winter was a huge factor in the NW state I live in (note I came from a 350Z driving all winter hills). AWD and SUV was a huge upgrade demand for me when I tested out the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Mercedes ML. Ultimately, I ditched everything midsize and smaller and went to the Mercedes GLS. But no doubt, when I tested the FK8, I can see it can be a perfect car that can carry things while having good power all around.
Did you end up test driving the type r? I’ve never had a problem in rain or snow, I live in the pnw you might get more snow than me but I’ve always felt fwd does good in the snow. I’m coming from an Audi with Quattro. At times you can’t even tell the type r is only fwd of course unless you stand on it from a stop.
I had a 10th gen si,and currently have the type R. I Drove my si for 50k miles with bolt ons and a pherable tune, and now I have my type r fbo pherable etune. It’s definitely better in every way. Is it worth the price? Yes if you compare 25k to 40k yes you do get what you pay from. Paying mark up on either is not worth it. After 8 months of the type r and 16k miles. I’m looking to get the Supra if a manual is a option. I’ve driven the auto and while fun I still prefer the manual. The type r is the best jdm car for 40k or a used rcf. I don’t think the R is worth 50k.
I feel like if you care purely about performance to dollar ratio, the SI sounds better. Because you can get an SI and for $10-13k customize it to your liking and relatively easily get it to type R power numbers or even a little higher
But the si even with power adder won’t hold the value as well in the long run compared to the type R especially when u look at the older Honda car market now cars are going up in price and the most expensive ones are as close to stock as possible. That being said I’d go type R all day with minor mods. 👍🏽 but like you said if it was purely performance build I can see where your coming from. 🙋🏽♂️
Wrong, wait till you see an R making real power with the support these companies have for k20c over Lame15 engines. Not every R owner likes stance or rice shit or is from cali
@@kekistani2373 Thats very true, but you're also talking extra money there on top of the close to $40k to buy the car. That's like saying, why buy a Toyota 86 and turbo it when instead you can buy a supra and turbo that instead. More money get more performance but there is a huge difference between buying a car for $25k and putting a few grand into modding, and buying a car for $38k+ and then modding it. A lot of people can't afford the more expensive one but of course more money give more potential and obviously the type R has higher potential than the SI with its upgraded components and larger engine. It damn well better have more potential lol, that's the entire reason it's more expensive.
@@theshow0024 For me personally I just care what the car is to me. Cuz I like to keep my cars a long time. I have an 86 right now and plan on getting her a built engine and boosting her up to almost 400hp. I don't really care that the value won't go up, because I don't plan on ever selling it. But I realize that's just my opinion and many ppl aren't like that.
For me it was simple. I wanted a coupe. Also the price difference didnt make sense to me personally as I like to customize my things. If i spent the money on the type r I wouldnt have the coupe that I wanted and wouldnt have money for extra mods. I went with a Coupe Si. The money i saved i was able to get a Built block, drop in turbo, down pipe and front pipe, intake, exhaust, intercooler and piping, turbo inlet, hks blow off valve, and injectors for performance, car currently makes about 300whp I also have the car slammed on coilovers, have 3 piece wheels, aftermarket wing, type R front bumper, Abs dynamics front splitter and side skirt extensions. a custom rear diffuser and tint, also got all my chrome painted black. I was able to make the car compete if not beat a type r in a race and was really able to make the car my own and have fun with the money I saved. Wont hold value like the type r but i built the car for me and dont plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. If money meant nothing I wouldve obviously gotten the type r though.
I would say ur best bet is to buy an 8th or 9th gen si, buy a forced induction kit, do some bolt ons and you’re already gonna be putting out more hp than a type r
Well…. We’re talking about out of the box performance. You can say this about any car. Truthfully, u can tune a 10th gen si stock and make way more power than an fbo tuned older gen si.
@@natedostalik3538 yeah the phearable 1.5R tune, on a stock 93 octane car it does 249whp and 302wtq. Really damn good numbers especially for a sub 2900lb car.
8th gen owner here. I'm biased but this is my favorite SI. Bolt ons and a tuner are great, but to get real numbers from a forced induction kit you'll need some work put into the bottom end and internals. At least for my peace of mind. I'm not going to risk blowing a good k20 for temp turbo or SC power.
I want a 9th gen Si because of the torque from the NA k24 and the better interior than the 8th gen Si but the 8th gen Si is faster FBO than a FBO 9th gen 😭 which makes the 8th gen superior not only that but they're so expensive now almost in the same price range as the 10th gen which I don't really want because of the turbo
Type R is a track monster , everything about it makes it special , but i hate the 5 door / 4 door , i like the 2 door coupe style on the Si , so if 13k is enough to put all the type r goodies on the Si ?? that will be the best of both for me. 😊
@@FitmentIndustries It's actually bone stock. It's really clean, and I want to keep it that way. there are a couple dents on the outside. Beside that, there is nothing wrong.
Got a 9th gen Si 1. Because the FK2 was never sold in the americas 2. Is what I could afford 3. An FK8 type R is almost 4 times the price of my 9th gen. But that does not mean the Si is a bad car, as an entry level sporty car with decent power and proven reliaability has become the best thing I've owned!
As a current Si owner. The type R is easily worth it for me personally. That k20 motor being the biggest reason, the L series engines are too new, not that many super high mileage ones around yet. K series motors have a reputation for being one of Honda's "tank" engines. Another is the wider fenders that come on a type R allowing you to run a 255 tire and up on lowered suspension without rubbing. Which definitely comes in handy on the track when you want more aggressive and grippy tires/wheel set up. I'm also a pretty big Honda fan so just the idea of owning a "type r" is prestigious and privileged for me personally. But i mean if none of these things seem to affect you, definitely stick to the Si
The k20c family of motors are wildly different than the k series motors we've been dealing with for the past 20 years. They share little to no parts and the architecture isn't even that similar, so the "tank" reputation doesn't necessarily apply to the type r motor (yet)
Currently saving up for the new generation( and last I think) of the type r. I am literally busting my ass right now as a mailman to buy my dream car I’ve always wanted since I was a child
I don't ever wish the Type R in my riew view was me. I specifically bought an Si because it was toned down visually. I still can't fully get behind the in your face looks of the R. Just my opinion and to each his own. Granted I'm not getting the same level of performance, but I don't track my car and with some minor mods, the Si is a damn blast to drive. Thanks for the video!!
I saw a guy on Instagram who built up an si cause he wanted a coupe, so i feel the fact that the type r is only a 5 door hatch should be considered by those who care
Honestly always wanted a stock ek9 civic. Just so I could keep it clean. And I couldn't agree more with the prefomance out of the box! The type R out does the FWD competetors: the Veloster N and the GTI earning that pricetag. (I've had the chance to drive the manual Veloster N and a 6th gen GTI I thought they were a blast! I'd love to try the type R!)
Correct me if I'm wrong but the 10th gen Si has a 2.0 not 1.5..? It's not the same engine as the R but I'm pretty sure the Si has the same displacement. All other trims have the 1.5t except the base sedan 2.0 non turbo
@1:24 aw man I thought he said something COMPLETELY different from what he actually said 😯 I was like "for the sake of some WHAT!??" 🤣😂 c'mon I can't be the only one
I have driven both quite a bit. I think the type r is better if you are the type of guy who just wants to do cosmetic and light performance mdos, but id reccomend an si if you really wanna mod more. Then again after the new corolla gr, I'm not sure I could reccomend either, depending on the price point for the gr.
Have my Type R for over a year now and I love it! It’s honestly the best daily driver car to have, soo much passing power in 6th gear while cruising. I’ve drove it throughout the winter and it wasn’t bad at all (as long as you have winter tires). I went to 3 fishing trips with it, the hatch is amazing for all my equipment and the gas is pretty good for the performance 6.7L/100km (35mpg) if I drive conservative on the hwy. I’ve driven over 40,000km (25,000mi) within the year, done all maintenance by myself, and it’s super easy to work on if your mechanical incline. As for the price, I paid 35k Canadian. I wouldn’t pay more than 42k Canadian imo. Coming from a 2003 G35 Coupe owner. #R-06583
this shouldn't even be a question. I own a 2020 si and I would trade it in a heartbeat for a type r. Si can't handle mods well after about 350 hp without dropping stupid money in so just saying that type r ftw. Trans is the biggest difference. Plus k20 is just a proven platform. This 10th gen Si was a miss for me. I would have rather it been released with the same platform as the 9th gen. I've owned ever gen of Si since the ek and I can tell you right now the type r is def worth the price and the hype
I'm not saying I disagree with you, but the k20 in the type r is nothing like the k20 motors that have been out for the last 20 years. to say that the k20c motors are a proven platform is mistaken as the only real similarity it shares with the k series motors of old is the crank.
Mayority of people getting it wrong since start ,the first and almost reviewer comparingson is about straight lines, For x money, this or that car is fast or faster, Not everything is about the straight line You can lie to yourself, but never ever Si be a better pick, it all comes to not having the money, but accept it you will always dream of owning THE R
$13k difference if you’re only looking at 2020 Si’s. A 2017-2019 si is easily $20k cheaper than it’s type R counter part. Yea they hold their value, but who’s buying a civic to keep it stock? And that’s when it loses its value (obviously depends on what’s done). Type Rs are sick but for $20k you can turn an Si into something way better and enjoyable than a type r. If you’re getting one to throw an intake, k tuner and springs on so you can take em off when the time comes to sell, type r is 1000% the move
Not even worth comparing these to platforms type r is on another level first its reinforced all over its frame it has upgraded everything its like comparing the evo with the regular lancer from mitsubishi
Si if you want a car that looks like it performs, but is only slightly faster than your average commuter, type r if you want looks and some actual performance.
I have a 2019 Si, paid off….. when I purchased it, $26k MSRP……… that being said they didn’t even have a single dollar mark up. The Type R on the other hand was going for $50k. It would of been stupid to buy something marked up so high, my wifes BMW X3 M40i can beat that Hype R too. Anyways…… maybe someday when the used car market makes sense I will buy a Type R for shits and giggles.
Can't really answer this question with a new model about to come out, You can get the Accord with mostly the same engine or you can get a SI with mostly the same suspension...for now. Edit: Right now people are trying to get more than they paid new for a 2017-2020 SI and that's crazy, normally Type R holds much better.
2dr civic si coupes for life. lol jk, but at the time, close to 40 was way out of my price range. Especially for a civic. I have close to 10 in mods and love the look. also the hours spent in the garage with pops modifying was priceless. They both equally make great dailys. The SI looks a million times better and I own a type r

Thanks for the insight homie! 🤘🏾🤘🏾 this is good info. -Edgar
If you intent to go balls to the wall into corners and on the track the Type R is worth it. You don't buy a Type R for the extra power it has over the SI, you get a Type R because how good the handling and aero is out of the box. You can actually feel the car being pressed to the road the faster you go and I love it.
Glad y’all had a video clip of the EP3! The Type R has a different subframe, Brembos, a K20C & MUCH more.
I was never really into honda cars until I drove a type r. Then finally made my mind of buying one! It was either a sti or a ctr but the ctr just handle different and have more characters!
Any big plans for it? -Edgar
I’m planning to make it a street car, take it auto crossing and mountain drive!
My dream car is a type R but I'm getting a 22 Si. Excited to see what all the pros and cons of this motor is
The si is enough for me, you'd get a type R if you're into going to the track and a si to just have a fast street car imo, I do own a 10th gen Si
The real test would be to put the money saved back into the si to see how much performance you can get out of it.
Im sure it would be a monster with money invested to it! -Edgar

@@clugokillscluco realistically, no. Truth is the l15s cannot hold too much power. Fbo si vs stock type r. The si would keep up at best. Whoever wins would be based on driver. But the type r is faster.
@@nelsonsuarez213 I'd have to take your word for. Last car I've driven is my 2015 si sedan.
Thats a heck of a deal by todays standards! We'll see what happens. -Edgar

10th gen ctr/Fk8 was inspired by Lamborghini according to Honda head Daisuke Tsutamori.
The 11th gen FE2 will not be inspired by lambo, but something far more tame sadly.
The Elantra N is a game changer. It is priced above the SI but far below the Type R and is really right up there performance wise.
I’d like to get behind the wheel of one! Have heard a lot of noise about it. -Edgar
To me, it’s fugly
I've always loved k series engines so I can't jump in the new si's and be happy with the 1.5t..however the styling of the 10th gen type R has always been overdone imo. This is one difference I'm happy about with the 11th gen, however, they tamed the styling, made aero more functional and made it over all fit in more with the rest of the lineup. I personally wish we had the packaging of an SI with the guts of a type R.

The real question is: is it worth to buy both?
I have a 2021 Type R. Overall I think the type r is amazing around the corners and I think it is more agile than the Si
Ayeee any big plans for it or anything done to it? -Edgar
I just bought a 2019 si and LOVE it! Handles amazing and gas mileage is silly! Type R just looks silly.
I’m so happy and grateful I got my type r my dream car before the mark up like holy Moley
I couldn't afford the R so I got the si. But in hind sight I ended up spending the difference trying to improve the performance anyway
I saved my $10,000 and got an Si, dumped it into performance parts. The Si was cheaper, and now it's sportier. Best of both worlds.
There you go, nothing wrong with that! -Edgar
Those pesky markups kill it for enthusiasts. 😓😓 -Edgar
The 9th gen type r that i have here in UK is mind blowing. It is incredible to drive and in my opinion better looking than the 10th gen
I feel like if you care purely about performance to dollar ratio, the SI sounds better. Because you can get an SI and for $10-13k customize it to your liking and relatively easily get it to type R power numbers or even a little higher
You're not wrong! -Edgar
💥💥💥 -Edgar
Well…. We’re talking about out of the box performance. You can say this about any car. Truthfully, u can tune a 10th gen si stock and make way more power than an fbo tuned older gen si.
@@JasonSmallzYT true, I should’ve included 10th gen si in my comment, those things tuned and with the right parts can be monsters
Crazy how things have just gone up and the value enthusiasts feel! Name of the game tho. -Edgar
Type R is a track monster , everything about it makes it special , but i hate the 5 door / 4 door , i like the 2 door coupe style on the Si , so if 13k is enough to put all the type r goodies on the Si ?? that will be the best of both for me. 😊

👏👏👏 -Edgar
The k20c family of motors are wildly different than the k series motors we've been dealing with for the past 20 years. They share little to no parts and the architecture isn't even that similar, so the "tank" reputation doesn't necessarily apply to the type r motor (yet)
Currently saving up for the new generation( and last I think) of the type r. I am literally busting my ass right now as a mailman to buy my dream car I’ve always wanted since I was a child

"If it aint a Type R, then it aint a tight car"
I was interested in the type R until but the 10 mpg gap between the civic touring and the type R is a bit too big
I wouldve liked to see the comparisson in modified form. If the SI can make 350+hp and still cost less, it might make a tougher decision.

I'm going to save up to buy a Type R in 1 to 2 years because it's so fun and it's a hatch.
As for the price, I paid 35k Canadian. this shouldn't even be a question.
I'm not saying I disagree with you, but the k20 in the type r is nothing like the k20 motors that have been out for the last 20 years. to say that the k20c motors are a proven platform is mistaken as the only real similarity it shares with the k series motors of old is the crank.
not even about performance, just the idea of owning the first type r sold in america for a very long time is enough to justify buying it
Mayority of people getting it wrong since start ,the first and almost reviewer comparingson is about straight lines,
