PRINCE's iconic classic machine was the LM-1, not the LinnDrum. Ten classic songs of my youth that featured the drum machine of the '80s: the Linn LinnDrum.
I love the linndrum... so iconic. It was used in so many songs and it sounds so good. It's truly a piece of retro goodness with it's beautiful wooden trim.
Got to see THE most famous LINN (LM1 specifically)ever in person today at Prince’s Paisley Park. Sitting right next to his Oberheim. Take the Ultimate Tour if you go, you won’t regret it.
1. Queen - Radio Ga Ga - 0:10 2. The Twins - Balett Dancer - 0:40 3. Diego - Walk In The Night - 1:10 4. Irene Cara -Flashdance (What a Feeling) - 1:41 5. Gary Low - I Want You - 2:19 6. Madonna - Dress You Up - 2:57 7. Bronski Beat - Small-town Boy - 3:25 8. A-Ha - Take On Me - 3:59 9. Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round - 4:27 10. Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Relax - 5:09
You Spin Me Round (Like a record), Relax and Flashdance...What a Feeling were all done on a Linn LM-1 Drum Computer. In You Spin Me Round, the cowbell was tuned high and only the LM-1 had all the sounds tunable. The cowbell on the LinnDrum can’t be tuned. Take on me did use the LinnDrum, but A-Ha used different sounds.
Almost the entire album of Daniel Lavoie "Tension Attention" released in 1983 was programmed by Daniel DeShaime on the first LinnDrum available in Canada at the time. Producer John Eden (Der Kommissar) decided that it was so great, he recorded all the drum tracks before recording the other instruments. All they had to do after that was to follow the beat. :D
I’m just now learning about the Roland 808 and the Linndrum. Of course I’ve known about the 808, but I’ve never realized that this is what dominated the radios back in the 80’s.
A public FAVOR, please, since there are many stupid people in this world who apparently throw tantrums without a reason - please don't complain that there's no Prince in this ten-song demo video. Besides the fact than with ten songs there's not space to cover everybody, the main reason is that the most iconic Prince songs didn't use the LinnDrum, but the Linn LM-1. When I will get an LM-1 and make a video about it, you can be sure that there will be Prince songs in it. If you're not familiar with the LM-1, please look it up: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linn_LM-1
To be fair (re: Human League), though Martin Rushent has said it was LM-1, Phil and the girls don't help matters! :P They routinely insist that it was the LinnDrum, when _all_ documentation shows it was an LM-1. The LinnDrums had *_yet_* to be introduced at that time. And as per the wiki article: unfortunately, the list of users has been removed; supposedly it was "objective", even though evidence can be found all over the web :P
This is probably my favourite drum machine since, the sounds on it are just so fantastic and produce great rhythms when used in songs or music in general.
You Spin Me Round (Like a record) was done on a LM-1, not the LinnDrum. A good indication is that the cowbell is tuned high, and only on the LM-1 were all the sounds tunable. On the LinnDrum, however, only the snares, slapstick, and the congas were tunable. This was the drawback of the LinnDrum, as not all the sounds were tunable.
thank you for clearing that up. I ALWAYS thought it was the LinnDrum. I just need a power cable and some headphones and a prayer and see if she still boots.
Nice! I love this machine so much...it's so punchy. Some other great songs with it: "Solid" by Ashford & Simpson, "Flesh for Fantasy" by Billy Idol; all of the Scarface soundtrack; Godley & Creme's "Cry"; the Top Gun, Miami Vice and Axel F themes; just about every Miami Sound Machine and Pointer Sisters song; "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" by Tears for Fears; and last but not least, the Blade Runner soundtrack, by the always amazing Vangelis.
I knew your site for quite a long time for pre investigation before buying stuff. But this channel is like an interactive museum of pop music. I can linger here for days!
When the 'Radio Ga Ga' pattern started, I immediately began humming the synth bass riff from Human League's "Don't You Want Me", but I believe that earlier track used the LM-1. I'd never noticed the similarity between the two songs before. (I hated the Queen track at the time, but still love Human League).
Great work guys! Would love to hear some Human League as Dare was pretty much done using a Linn Drum, legend has it the producer (Martin Rushent) took delivery of a Linn during the making of the album and they decided to use it on all tracks.
+Ted Lewis Hi Ted, thank you, - would you please look up the difference between LM-1 and LinnDrum - if you read the comments you'll find that nine-ten people have already posted the same comment. Prince's most characteristic sound was from the LM-1, which I don't have yet.
Abacab also used the TR808. The linndrum is used on Mama (distorted by a fender amp), Just a job to do, Invisible Touch, Tonight tonight tonight (with the SDS7), Land of confusion, Domino, Throwing it all away. CR78 is used on Duchess, Me and sarah jane. TR808 is used on No reply at all, Man on the corner, Taking it all too hard, In too deep, Domino (there is some stuff in pt2 on the studio version). The MCS is used on Silver rainbow
I really liked Wham's "Battle stations" which I believe is also the LinnDrum. Of course they did process the sound quite a bit with EQ and gated reverb etc. But the pitched up snare sounds really cool in this track.
Well, I heard that when i make the drum patterns including the music notes from the computer software since first time in 2016, to make a song to composed with me.
The LinnDrum and Roland S-50 snare drum were heard in the songs “What Have You Done for Me Lately” and “Nasty Boys” and 1990 Whitney Houston song “I’m Your Baby Tonight”.
The sound of the snare drum is so classic.
Most of the Linndrum’s sound are.
And in 90-ies awful rhythms this nice sound disappeared... just bass impulses instead of proper "kick".
BRC The LinnDrum and Roland S-50 snare drum were heard in the OMD song “If You Leave” (1986).
JMJ concerts in China inc "Arpegiator" used that Linn "crack/snare"
The clap sound is also.
That snare sound is so classic for being from a drum machine
I love the linndrum... so iconic. It was used in so many songs and it sounds so good. It's truly a piece of retro goodness with it's beautiful wooden trim.
im such a sucker for wooden trim
That snare sound! Oh how I love it! Nothing else comes even close to the true original!

Not “Balett”, “Ballet”.

The LinnDrum was made in 1982 and released in 1982. The LinnDrum was heard in the song “The Day Before You Came” (1982).
I’m just now learning about the Roland 808 and the Linndrum. Of course I’ve known about the 808, but I’ve never realized that this is what dominated the radios back in the 80’s.

Hey Synthmania. Are this drums process with eq and compression? And reverb? Or only reverb?
Thank god there is no Prince. This is Italio Disco music for the most part!
To be fair (re: Human League), though Martin Rushent has said it was LM-1, Phil and the girls don't help matters! :P They routinely insist that it was the LinnDrum, when _all_ documentation shows it was an LM-1. Why is there no Prince in this demo?
AND I QUOTE: "PRINCE's iconic classic machine was the LM-1, not the LinnDrum."
Rodger Linn shaped the sound of pop music from the early 80s and onward. A God.
It was a lot of fun listening to these epic historical beats.
Even Prince used the LinnDrum Machine
Happy New Year 2023 everyone!
God bless
He used the LM-1, different machine. Both epic though.
thanks for keeping the history alive, these videos are a joy to watch
It’s crazy and amazing how one drum sound could be the staple of a generation and a sonic cue for the nostalgic ear.
The sound of ALL of this is so classic!
This is probably my favourite drum machine since, the sounds on it are just so fantastic and produce great rhythms when used in songs or music in general.
I love this! I LOVE this drum sound more than any other; it is why I
Some of the best drum sounds ever. Great job guys. 👍
I heard some probably 1985 song the LinnDrum was heard in at the restaurant at 6:56PM in January 26, 2022.
Awesome job, and the ones on 808 & 909 too! A blast from the past ;)
This is so much fun to watch and listen to! Very cool idea - you're awesome!
+Steven Morris Thank you very much, you're too kind!
I really like the Dead or Alive pattern, You Spin Me Round (Like A Record), never stop dancing with it. :)
You Spin Me Round (Like a record) was done on a LM-1, not the LinnDrum. A good indication is that the cowbell is tuned high, and only on the LM-1 were all the sounds tunable. In the song "I Might Be" (2021), the LinnDrum was really heard.
Thank you very much for sharing! Great video!
Classic drum and bass lines for so many hinrg classics, back in the day..
Wow! Bringing back some great memories. I love it. :)
Love your videos love these drums since forever !!!!
The You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) and Relax patterns give me The Blue Oyster vibes. 😆
LOVE this video so much!!
I love this sound!
love this! thanks for uploading
What a fantastic sounding machine,still.
Outstanding.
Sounds Great
Thank you for this demo, very nice tour of famous tracks with the stripped-down sound, really nice 👍🏼
Glad you liked it!
The LinnDrum was really heard in the 1983 Kids Incorporated versions of the songs "Gloria" and "Physical".
, love them Rhythm machines!! Trying to find one to purchase right now!
Very good sound in this video.
Thanks Roger
Used extensively throughout Hall and Oates' H20 album, and very likely into their Big Bam Boom album.
Pure Gold!
THANK YOU. SO COOL
Number 5 is also Human League "Do or die" , and 6 is also "Open your heart". HL had one of the first Linn Drums in the UK..
Excellent !!!
Audio nostalgia.Great stuff SynthMania.
thank you for clearing that up. I ALWAYS thought it was the LinnDrum. I just need a power cable and some headphones and a prayer and see if she still boots.
In the song “Hungry like the Wolf”, the LinnDrum and Roland Juno-60 patch “Popcorn” were heard.
Awesome programming!!Thanks!! Theres a 'LinnDrum' for sale on Ebay now i may blow my savings and grab one!!!
1 linnDrum in the hands of Roger Nelson... Prince.. and billions emerge.
Amazing⚡️
I love the cowbell sound
Yeah! This is gold!

Great job, Maestro!
I will try to use your drum tracks.
Thank you Sir!
Nice! I love this machine so much...it's so punchy.

In The Pointer Sisters songs “Dance Electric” and “Jump (For My Love)” the Oberheim DMX was heard.
@@adamharris7775 You're right, also one of my favorite songs of theirs is "Dare Me" and that's all DMX
@@kz1000ps The Oberheim DMX and some Yamaha DX7 harps and the Yamaha DX7 bass 1 were heard in the song "Falling in Love (Uh-Oh)".
what about the album "The breakfast club"?
@@stopppppped The Oberheim DMX was heard in the opening of The Breakfast Club.
Because of this, it's no exaggeration to say that dance music has prospered since the 1990s.
Timeless drum mchine.
I knew your site for quite a long time for pre investigation before buying stuff. But this channel is like an interactive museum of pop music. I can linger here for days!
Geertjan Vianen o
Drum machines have come a long way...that's all this makes me feel
Yeah, a long way down. All the new ones are just shitty recreations of classics
In the song "Word Up" (1986), the LinnDrum was heard.
Fantastic! :-D
Thanks for Gary Low!
big up SynthMania and Roger Linn!! =)
sounds so gooooooooood
LinnDrum sounds and Linn LM-1 sounds were heard in “Turn Out the Night” (1983) and “Cold Metal Rhythm” (1987).
Great work guys! Would love to hear some Human League as Dare was pretty much done using a Linn Drum, legend has it the producer (Martin Rushent) took delivery of a Linn during the making of the album and they decided to use it on all tracks.
+Jake Draper A Linn but the LM-1, not the LinnDrum - I don't have an LM-1 yet
Prince was a creative beast on the Linn
This is great. Don't forget Prince, who would have had a very different sound without Linn from 1982 to about 1988...
+Ted Lewis Hi Ted, thank you, - would you please look up the difference between LM-1 and LinnDrum - if you read the comments you'll find that nine-ten people have already posted the same comment. Prince's most characteristic sound was from the LM-1, which I don't have yet.
What a good place of history
Superролик.
I want one of those soooo bad
Oh my god !!! More !!!
Wham!'s Everything She Wants and Genesis' Tonight Tonight Tonight are some of the best LinnDrum patterns IMHO.
Except for Genesis they used a Roland CR-78, not a Linndrum.
They did use a CR-78, but only on the albums 'Duke' and 'Abacab'
@@santibanks Tonight Tonight Tonight was the LM2 wasn't it?
The LinnDrum and Oberheim DMX and Simmons SDSV were heard in Holding Out for a Hero (1984) and Resonance (2014).
and many many more.
The LinnDrum was heard in the Jody Watley song Looking for a Love.
The Simmons SDSV, LinnDrum cowbell and Oberheim DMX were heard in Maniac (1983).
How could you dare leave out, "What She Wants"
Well, I heard that when i make the drum patterns including the music notes from the computer software since first time in 2016, to make a song to composed with me.
Dope! This drum machine was used for The B Boys - 2,3, Break, Cuttin' Herbie and DJ Chuck Chillout's Hip Hop On Wax Vol 1
Definitely !! Also used on DJ Born Supreme Allah’s : 2, 3, Break Sequal !!
In dance-pop song The Way It Is (1986), the LinnDrum and Roland S-50 snare drum were heard.
I’m amazed big producers used it on auto. The beats are really distinctive!
thanks
Needs more cowbell
sensacional
this is epic
Great
the intro sounds exactly like "you spin me right round"
Nice piece of furniture too :)
Last christmas has to be linndrum
3:10 sounds like her song burning up too
The 1983 BÖHM Digital Drums tom drums were heard in the song “I Want You” (1983).
HI-NRG is so powerful!
In “Ballet Dancer” (1983), the MXR-185 bass drum was heard.
Todays bands should consider using this machine - it would improve their music !! ;)
Ableton live comes with all original LD samples I'm sure it is used
Would love to watch a part II Including boys of summer
The LinnDrum was heard in "Two of Hearts".
I miss Mama
cool shape
The LinnDrum and Roland S-50 snare drum were heard in the songs “What Have You Done for Me Lately” and “Nasty Boys” and 1990 Whitney Houston song “I’m Your Baby Tonight”.
