THE WORLD’S only wooden supercar, known as the "Splinter”, is a high-performance sports car that is estimated to be 90% wood. Fuelled by a lifelong desire to design and build his own car and inspired by a WWII airplane called the de Havilland Mosquito, designer and builder, Joe Harmon, from Mooresville, North Carolina, spent roughly nine years working on the Splinter with the help of his team. The Splinter began as a graduate school project at North Carolina State University and has continued since. Joe said that the goal was to use wood in the construction of the car in every possible application - wood is our only naturally renewable building material, it is biodegradable and takes a small amount of energy to produce. Also, according to Joe, wood has a better strength-to-weight ratio than steel and aluminium. Every wooden part of the Splinter is made from composite construction. Even though the car is not comfortable and may be impractical, Joe said that the goal in creating this car was to explore new ideas and perceptions of wood.

Normal cars have crumple zones, this one? Splinter zones.
Only car where you can say: "Shiver me timbers!"
I was thinking this is all kinds of bad if it does hit anything at speed
Lmao
Call it vlad the impaler
Much at stake when you crash it..
I would've built the chassis out of morning wood, nothing's stronger
😂😂😂😂 underrated comment
😂😂😂
Classic!
The sad thing about this comment is that your genius will largely go unrecognized lol you might be the funniest person alive!
Me being portuguese geezer started wondering what kind of tree would that be but then I saw the light and understood 🤣 🤣
I thought the thumbnail was GTA 5
Yea it weirdly looks like gta5
Fr
Are thinking about the deveste eight?
I did as well I seen it and thought how have I missed this, I know it's not on the podium
I was gonna say the same thing
" Lumber-ghini"
😂😂 good 1
That is great

How does this have only 79 likes?
MwhaHaahaHHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAHAJAAhaHaHaHAAaaaaaahhahaahaha!!!
I've seen this car in person during a trip from my hometown to Greensboro. It was a sight to behold, to say the least.
Dam wouldn’t want to get in a crash in that
Oh dude, I think too about this, when first see's this car
Knock on wood he doesn't get into an accident.
i wouldn't want to get in a crash period (wood or not wood) ..
A crash in any car is bad. I can tell you that, because I've been in two of them.
@@Wuzzup129 me too...... I would rather be in fiberglass then wood tho . Bad enough I'm in a crash now I gotta worry about being impaled with a steak when the crash happens. I'm good 😂😂😂
It's beautiful!!!
O to 60 in 2.3 seasons.
Cap
Lol
Faster than the speed of smell.
Imagine building a car for 9 years and have never gone over 30 in it.
He says it probably does 200mph with a probably 650hp engine. Maybe
Yeah I bet his family is pissed at him not helping him with anything ever again
Better than spending 9 years building it just to die in a crash
@@Ultimatechristian072 doubt it..He specifically said if it gets to hot the panels will start coming undone...I think it's cool but I'm not sure why you would put such an engine in it if you aren't going to be able to even go fast
Probably a reason he has only taken it up to 30mph. My Mazda pickup can theoretically reach over 500mph, given the right conditions.
Joe you sir are an artist in its purest form ,im blown away ,love love love it
Much respect for this guy and to everyone who supported him❤️ i really hope he gets more fame & recognition, he deserves it!
He had hair when he started lol
Well, it’s time to get Doug DeMero on this
Thiiiiiiiis is a splinter I got getting in.
He will want it on Cars and Bids
DeMero? 🤣
No features, 1 quirk
a-THIS..... is a wooden car. But not ANY wooden car.
God damn that thing looks cool and original. They should make regular ones.
@Harry Thotter & The Chamber of Thots regular meaning out of metal.
@ARandomDude metal doesn't rot?! Wow... Been wrong my whole life... 🤔
Except it'll need better vision. Rn it has zero out of the back!
I'd you think the design is original, look at Ford's GT90
Till you get in a wreck of pretty much any kind in one of those and have a giant splinter sticking out of your chest not to mention the likely hood of survival if it rolls even with a metal roll cage only secured to wood, come on now lets use our heads here this car is a nightmare
"Yes there are very good reasons why cars arent made of wood but lets go ahead and build one anyway
There's a LONG list of things that man does that he shouldn't. This is low tier. Nonetheless, you are correct! Let's hope it doesn't become a trend. 🤞
He did it for a college project
I like fire.
Tell that to Morgan, they still use wood frames although they don't use wooden gear linkages, thats just silly.
@@jamesneedham6265 use the term wood frame loosely as the wooden frame you speak of is only used to hang the body parts and leather interior coverings, the chassis though is made from aluminum.
MORGAN MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT THIS CLAIM
The Morgan wooden chassis cars arent supercars at all. (neighter is this one, but that's another discussion) Morgan made sports cars.. they do make the Aero 8 which has more performance. but that one ain't made of wood
Morgan's have a metal chassis and the body is aluminium over a wooden frame
@@stijnvandamme76 Morgans have a steel chassis you could remove all the wood and still drive.
I see some GT90 from NFS 2 in it.. this thing in metal would be so cool!
I thought the same.
But better looking.
I would love to see his house ..built from doughnuts or something
That ‘s a valuable unique great peace of American art , definitely belongs in a museum one day, would love to see it in person .🤩🤩🤩🤩
Incredible job Joe. Composite or laminate wood is very very strong and resilient. Congratulations on a job very well done, from an engineering standpoint as well as aesthetics. It is truly a work of art 👍🏻
It's so cool to see the car in action. I followed Joe's blog back when he was doing most of the work, before life put a pause on the initial progress.
Got to appreciate people with talents like this.
I don’t care what ANYONE says... THIS CAR LOOKS FREAKING AWESOME!!!
Mokujin from tekken wants to buy ur car lol. But seriously this is where art meets science and engineering at its purest form. truly a beautiful and amazing creation.
Solely a design exercise and proof-of-concept but what an incredible achievement in creative art and engineering. Absolutely astounding!
I was with you until I saw the interior. Looks like a 10 year olds canoe project on the inside. But the outside is gorgeous.
Years ago I saw pictures of this car in a car magazine. It's absolutely gorgeous. He should do a full carbon fiber version. Thanks.
MR J.H. I love the fact you have made it your own!!!! KUDOS SIR!!! LOVE IT!!!
What a masterpiece!! Such an awesome job!!
I don't know many people who wood buy this car, but my buddy plywood.🤜🤛👏👏👏👏
I was following the development of this car via his blog. He was granted lots of patents for new ways of using wood. For example, the outer body panels are a weave-like fabric, the suspension looks like a giant hunting bow, the rims are fully wooden... One of his tricks was to swap the cylinder's heads, so the exhaust is on the top. Amazing engineering.
Let the car community share this with all others let's get him to SEMA
Lol no
@@griffinmackenzie yes
Now let's see this again with some more exotic woods mixed in~
I'd also love to see the headlights and taillights redone with Transparent Wood, a la NileRed.
I love the design!!
Excellent design and workmanship. Beautiful. The herringbone pattern on the surface is a real feature.
Sooooo clearly I've been wasting my life!
lol exactly from dad’s money
Is a work of art.
Should've named the car, "Kindling"
Blows my mind. the weight challenges musta been crazy, as well as the maintenance
What a beauty !!!
Dang that thing is cherry! Would look great in ebony but right now its OAKay. I don't know many people who wood buy that car, but my buddy plywood.
This is an amazing creation. Real determination man. Hats off to this dude for his patience to build this car out of wood. But how do you handle the heat from catching the car on fire.
With it having that much hp i can only imagine if he actually drove it 50mph how long would it take before it catches on fire
lol rolling coffin ! its even wooden!
Right, leave the car design to the engineers.😂😂😂
eventually he lost his hair by the end of making this car
The great thing about a wooden car, if you break down in the middle of nowhere you can at least camp out and have a fire. Hey if your heater core fails, just light it up lol.
The more i look at it the more i actually love it
The name fits it perfectly
His woman stood by him and even mucked in to, i salute that.
Car is amazing.
I built a birdhouse once. It was awesome
I love it!! Looks amazing👍👍
I'm going to make a super car out of termites and eliminate the competition
Honestly, I would be afraid to get it wet due to the wood swelling.
Groot needs this for the next movie
...The people laughed till she said, "Burn!"...
Im not a big fan of cars but that is the most beatuifull thing I've ever seen. My life is ruind now knowing i will never own one. Great job thanks for sharing
Well done..a work of kinetic, functional art!!!!!
Once he popped the hood and shown the wooden engine block that's when I truly became impressed...
Mother Nature’s Super car ! Amazing 🤩
Love this car!! I wish he would get with a big shop and make this out of regular materials to see the performance his design can achieve. Beautiful design, love the shape.
Superb woodwork !
Work of art
Guys an artist
"The coolest thing about this was realizing that I've got the absolute best friends and family that somebody could ask for" ... my grandma said the same thing once, referring to her bout with cancer
The sound of the engines wow music for the soul! Which reminds me...does anyone else also almost only listen to rock music like Metallica/Delta Parole/Oasis when they drive? Whats you guys favourites?
Farourite Supercar!
for woodworm.
This an amazing car build.
Looks Awesome! 🤘🙂🤘
FRED FLINSTONE STEPPED HIS GAME UP !!!
excellent craftsmanship
One spark and you are good to goo👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Could watch another hour on this!!
Look like something you’ll see in gta 5. Looks nice great job :)
I'm most impressed by him pronouncing the word "height" correctly. Every show on Motor Trend has at least one person (if not all of them) pronounce it wrong. It drives me crazy to see these TALENTED designers, engineers, and mechanics mispronounced the word for a unite of measurement.
So thanks MTV for Pimping my Ride!!
Wow I'm speechless right now
Beautiful design.
Umbelieveble. Remind the Ford GT90 concept. Fantastic job
I love the design
Truly rustproof. Feasible.
Incredible
The Spruce Moose! LOL
I remember a UK car called the Clan Crusader which had no steel or wood in its chassis. The entire monocoque was constructed entirely from fibreglass and they were reported to be incredibly strong. I think they used the mechanics/running gear from the Hillman Imp. Not many made - remember seeing one at a car show many many moons ago when I used to show my 2 Ford Corsairs - a 2000E and a Crayford convertible.
That's amazing
The sound in there must be awesome
I think I saw this on a magazine a long time ago. The rear reminds me of slingshot
Speechless
If the design wasn't already enough the fact that its also a 6 speed manual is just damn amazing!
I'd be interested to see this at auction.
Dude this is incredible. Freaking awesome.
From an engineering stand point It's very Beautiful..the builder is realistic with its use and It Does belong in a museum or display...the way the world is going it could become more user friendly. The tech is so advanced now that it could be made from anything...
would love to see what happens to it when put it in a crash tunnel
Hes about to make millions. The design is very nice 👍🏿
It's beautiful.
Imagine wasting 9 years on a car that’s completely impractical, and later come to the conclusion that if I say that this was an engineering exercise, I won’t be so mad every time I see it. Yikes.
I remember seeing this car in the Hotwheels magazine when i was a kid good to see it still running
DAMN THIS SO COOL
The fact that it has a manual transmission not like all supercars.. i can respect this splinter car.
Willwood brakes?
This is awesome.
That's sick
Coolest car vid I've seen in a while, well done sir
Wow! Great build.
Wow, it reminds me of a Ford GT90 in some ways. Great looking car good work.
