This performance was her initial debut on the national stage. It blew people away. This was in June 1967 in Monterey, CA. The 'woman in the crowd' is actually Mama Cass Elliot of the Mamas and Papas--they were the primary force behind this Monterey Pop Festival that year. I was at the Univ of Washington in Seattle, and friends went to this, came back and Janis was all they talked about. Then we found out that she was coming to Seattle, so we got tickets, and I went to her concert in early August 1967 at the old Eagles' Auditorium. I'll never forget it. BTW, the ticket price was $2.75. LOL! (Which would still only be maybe $30 today, but of course we know you can't go to a concert for that price...not anywhere...for anyone. )

I didn't know this was the u.s. national debut. Good to know. But that Mama Cass "wow" clip shows up in so many other videos, or I think it does? She was another great.

It was 1967, the Monterey Pop Festival, and it was Janis's first performance to a large-scale crowd. Such a Legendary performance!! The lady with jaw-dropped amazement is Cass Elliot of Mamas & Papas, and sitting next to Cass was Jimi Hendrix, who was making his first major American performance.

She was a true genuine down to earth young girl who was so tormented by her demons of her past, that she conveyed her emotion and embodied every song she sung. Very unique special legend. The Queen of psychedelic blues, rock and soul. There was never anybody like her before nor after. A true legend. I l9ve evefything about her.❤❤❤

Her live performance of Summertime is a must. This song was done at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.

Nobody did it better than Janis. Saw her at Winterland in 68 with the Cosmic Blues band. Epic stuff.

I watched it then and I still watch it. She still makes armhairs stand on end. Remarkable.
Watch the live version of Summertime. One of the best recordind performances of hers in b&w.

Keep in mind that this was a performance keyed to the audience. The Monterrey festival was known for being 'out there' and this was Janis' big break to perform there and also be part of the film that was made of it.

You may want to review a neglected sleeper in her catalog: "Farewell Song" from the album "Live at Winterland '68" by Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin.

JJ sang this song throughout her all-too-brief career. It evolved.
BTW, this video was the second time she sang it at the Monterey Pop Festival. The first time, from the day before, the cameras were not allowed to point at the band, but the audio recording is available. Here: ruclips.net/video/Y504YSHPSuI/видео.html
Many think the first recording is the better version.

It's always fun watching a person watching Blues or Jazz for the first time. They're first reaction is the performance is out of tune especially the instruments. SO FUNNY 😂
