I don’t think you should’ve put this in a comment instead of just keeping it in the description
@@timothythexiii7548 am i the only one who sees the fault? the tilted tank does nothing ... the water is still level
@@timothythexiii7548 he has 15 likes and my comment has 2, plus he hearts his own comment lol i dont know looks fishy
Thanks, I wondered if it was to maintain turbulent flow across the length of the tank, Sorry didn’t realise the comment was in the wrong place, it wasn’t a criticism just a question, not wanting to start a bun fight
@@chronicawareness9986 I searched the whole 460 comments and it was a relief to see that we are not the only tilt deniers, there are some other 15 people that agree with us :D
Wishing we all had a "scaping buddy". I really do prefer videos that the two of you do together.
The interactions between you both really brings something special to the videos.
True. The vibe there is really nice.
Yes! I am working in a vaccum, it would be nice to be able to share the experience more.
I got a chance to pop into the shop and see this tank first hand. Looks fantastic. Thanks Matt for the tank advice too!
I’m so jealous 🌱🐟🌱🐠🌱😍
Did it lord? I'd love to see one of these in the flesh man. Do they look as good as they do on vid like?
Cool. I’ll pop in this week! I’m about 6 miles away😁. Smug or what😂
Thinking of finally going across the pond just to go to the shop!
Hello from overseas and I have no chance to visit the shop. T_T
With that setup it doesnt matter if the tank is leveld or not as long as you dont have an outlet in the glas on the lower site. Thats why you dont see a constantly flow at the filter outlet. There is no gravity working on the water downwards when it still remains in a closed system.
Exactly
*levelled *glass ❤
That’s what I was thinking maybe they should of let it overflow on that side and have a reservoir catching it and a pump
@@santoscortes9656 that would make a video that I would finish rather than skipping to the results lol
I tried it at home. I used flat sandstone rocks and let the water cascade over it making pools after each pour over. My hillstream loaches and the two small plecos I put in it loved it. I created a bit of an undercut beneath one of the stones in one of the pools, and similar overhangs on each side for each of the pools. The fish in the pools would go under the overhangs part of the time, then would come out to the main current to feed. I had to have the sandstone cut to shape so that it would fit properly into the tank. I also planted the overhangs with mosses. I did not put any sand or soil in the tank. I did put some mosses in the flow of the water as it went over the sandstone. I placed three water intakes about a foot upstream in the bottom pool. By placing three in, and putting them upstream I was able to limit the suction on of the outlet intakes so that fish would not get sucked in. I did not use a power head. There was plenty of flow generated by the slightly angled sandstone.
The idea was inspired by a stream which I had seen in Colorado in the United States. It also has a sandstone bottom with little sand or other substrate, and it hosts lots of cutthroat trout fry and some skulpins. In my tank, the bottom pool had sand in it, but only in the bottom of it. As in the stream in Colorado, no plants were on the sandstone, and only a few mosses were growing on and next to the water. I had the water coming out from two pieces of sandstone placed one on top of the other at the top of the stream a bit like a spring. On the top piece of sandstone I put some moss. I put a little soil behind that, and put in a sliver of mountain bluestem grass. Except for the fact that when it goes to seed, the seeds are a bit messy, it perfects the look at the top of the aquarium. As it is in your tank, the hillstream loaches are always in the flow. From time to time, some of the other fish will fight their way up or downstream to get to one or another of the pools.
Though sandstone is in short supply in Great Britain, I'm sure you could find plenty of slates which could be cut to size and used to the same effect. I did not have nearly the amount of water in the aquarium as you did in yours. As a result, the pools went from small at the top to large at the bottom. Further, the water depth going over the stone was not deep. it was enough to cover the backs of the hillstream loaches, and that's about it. As the other fish ran the flow, their backs were out of the water. They ran it fast though, and if they ran out of juice before making it to the next pool, they just let the current was them back from whence they came. I witnessed trout fry doing this same thing in the little stream in Colorado which inspired me to make this aquarium.
If I live long enough and can amass enough money, I hope to build a much bigger and longer one with a heavy duty chiller on it to make a true Rocky Mountain style creek complete with cutthroat and brook trout, as well as the little skulpins which are the clean up crew of those real creeks and rivers. Dreams dreams dreams...
Very neat to see a replica of a different type of aquatic environment than a conventional tank would showcase. Super interesting, and highly educational too! Would love to see you continue to explore this sort of concept, playing with scapes to replicate environments that I think a standard fishkeeper may either not think of, or feel they have the tools/knowledge to do!
Super interesting tank! Love the call on zebra danios. They show their real energy and personality when you put them in a tank like this.
You're really getting me into these sparsely planted river scapes, new tank urges are building quickly.
Lovely! just shows how much benefit there is to be had by balancing everything to it's natural habitat. Love it.
I just love the dynamic and friendship between you two. The videos are calming and fun and bring a smile to my face. Love these continued collabs ❤
I really like the interaction of you and your fish shop friend. Setting up tanks at the shop makes sense and is entertaining.
A perfect example of how a simple hard scape and a single plant specie design creates a truly natural looking presentation. Well done Lads, well done.
Got to visit the shop yesterday and saw all the tanks in person. They all looked amazing and been inspired to change up one of my tanks. Matt was so friendly and gave some great advice 😊
Which shop is it as they have a few when I googled them
@@adamgreen9907 Maidenhead aquatics
which location was this i see they have a bunch of locations?
I love that you've become good friends with the workers! so cool that they allow you to build tanks with them.
Fabulous build as always MD & Matt!
The tank is shallow enough that the silicone seams should be able to withstand the tilt in applied pressure. If that turns out to not be the case, you can get the "tilted" sloped substrate of a river with bags of dirt/soil supporting egg crate light diffuser, then cover with your substrate and boulders.
Looks fabulous and fish look so happy!!!!
am i the only one who realises the tiled tank does nothing? the water stays level... they could have just made a gradient and a pump on the side to create a flow
I love all these combinations of tank builds, the friendship you pair have really comes through on screen, as I follow both channels I would love to see MD in Mats channel,if what I heard is true if MD is getting a bigger fish room sometime soon, you should both work together on both channels from
There
Hear Hear! It would be cool to see Matt visit MD's new studio on his channel with his style, cuz I really like both channels for their different ways of doing things *and* the pair of these guys together is magic and lots of fun.
It's always fun to see two great aqua scapers working together.
The enthusiasm, expertise, and empathy that goes into making these beautiful and healthy tanks is really inspiring - thanks guys!
Look good…… could the same effect not be got from leaving the tank level and building up the substrate at the “shallow” end, so the slope is in the tank?
There you go using logic again, I watch this all the way through and still don't get the point
Yes..if I do it I would level the tank..get the substrate higher on one side where the pump is, creating a slope down..planting long leaves at the high slope..let it flow down the stream..that's natural..
Nice little sunday video! The fishbois in action!
Yet again MD and fishshop Matt build another great aquarium I really am loving these joint build video's hopefully we get more in the future
Love the hill stream loaches. Awesome build guys 😊
MD, I could listen to your music choices all day long. Super chilled and relaxing!
Nice idea. The bromance continues ❤️
Love the idea! Not sure tilting the tank does much for the aesthetic, feel like you could get the same result without tilting and a cleaner look overall
And more water and swimroom
@@jonathanr72 it would level itself out over time from the high flow.
@@Animalguy__33 until the filter gets clogged, which generally happens lol
I love watching these fish take videos! Thank you for making them!
am i the only one who realises the tilted tank does nothing? the water stays level... they could have just made a gradient and a pump on the side to create a flow
Seen this earlier in the week in the shop, definitely something different!
Especially testing the limits of aquascaping! 😀
Where is the shop?
Amazing video because you guys were having so much fun being creative and pushing your limits. It really seems to make a difference in the fish behavior when they are introduced to their natural habitats. It is good to see that change, then you know that tank is a success. I am looking forward to the next collaboration:)
Replicas of their natural habitats. ❤
That tank would be great for keeping mudskippers😍. The way it naturally gets deeper. I would love some mud skippers. Keep up the hard work MD your tanks never fail to amaze me!
Amazing tank guys! Love that you made it with the fish in mind, glad that they seem to really be happy in there ❤
Even before the caveat I was thinking this wayyyyyy beyond my skill level. I do love how it turned out. It's absolutely stunning. Great job!
Pictus catfish would love this tank too
Looks fantastic , and I love seeing the new set-ups you try. Seeing the stream loaches moving through the flowing water over the rocks is awesome.
My only question is whether the angle of the tank will stress the seams at the deeper end and could potentially lead to a failure of the tank?
I was thinking you could have the base of the tank level, and have a long "wedge" underneath the substrate to introduce the slope you want. Maybe by using old under gavel filter plates stacked and cover with a fine mesh? This would also allow you to use closer to the full capacity of the tank in terms of water volume, as the water would still go under the wedge. Whereas here, a portion of the tank volume is lost as it rises diagonally above the water line.
Many years ago I worked in an aquarium, and we had a tidal flow tank. they could have gone with a closed system and used electronics for the rising and lowering the water levels. But since the aquarium had a flow through system, the simplest method was to have the substrate move up and down instead. It worked so well the kelp was happy to grow there and the fish loved it. But, as above, there are many ways to achieve the same thing.
I love your aquascaping. But that angle has me terrified 😀😀
am i the only one who realises the tilted tank does nothing? the water stays level... they could have just made a gradient and a pump on the side to create a flow
@@chronicawareness9986 I'm about halfway through the video and have been pondering that myself, what is the actual benefit a river is level if you are a snorkeling in it and an aquarium should be level if you are viewing it from the side, like you said nothing is gained except for views
How did they raise and lower the substrate levels in The reef kelp tank? Any videos of it / which aquarium and where?
When u can’t see MD through the dust 😂😂😂😂😂 I rarely chuckle out loud but that got me
I really enjoyed your banter in this one. And the tank turned out great!
I love this video just the attitude of you two gentlemen make people excited to watch your video. Thank you so much for the video.
I had a temperate river tank, on the level with hill stream and reticulated loaches. Didn't have shiners BITD. Had twin powerheads feeding through a hidden internal custom made filter set up. Luv Ur tank. If only I too had the space. Looks great.
Nice effect with the sloped tank. I would be a bit worried about the uneven pressure generated.
A level tank has even water pressure against the glass on all sides. A sloped tank has a much higher pressure on one side. I don't know the formula for calculating how much more... might be worth finding out?
The two most affable blokes on RUclips are funny, entertaining and informative, what more could you want?
Having a hillstream myself it is nice to see one on RUclips. For some reason there aren't that many on here. Some rhinogobius species would work great in this tank too. They will bring life to the bottom of the tank.
ELI5 wouldnt the same flow be achieved if tank was level? seems this would only make sense if water flow was pouring over the top of the lower end.
Love seeing all the tanks first hand..... had lots of fun finding the fish in some of the scapes ...... keep up the great work guys
your mother told me in a dream that you better stop smokign cigs.. random but yeah
@@chronicawareness9986 stopped smoking 2 years ago lol
I love hill stream style tanks. This concept is literally my dream tank. Great job MD!
Super interesting tank, but with that water depth, I think you could get the same effect by building up one end inside a level tank. I'd think the angled tank would only be necessary if the upstream rocks are not submerged and the water is running down the substrate, not flowing through it. Picture a shallow stream vs a deep river. You'd also be able to increase your water volume substantially that way.
Cleva gurlll
This is one of my favorite builds. I'd love to see more streams and river builds with a good flow.
It's a fantastic build BUT my only worry is when you tilt the tank the complete water mass weight moves towards the lower side instead of the be base. If you really do the math, let's the water quality is 300L which would rest on base glas of 4ft by 2ft after tilting the tank the weight of 300L now moves to lower sided glass wall that is let's say 2ft by 2ft. Gravity does play its role, not the complete weight is shifted but this causes problem to the tank in long run, problems like wall silicone leak or even side glass break( I pray none of this happens to this tank) but I hope you got the point. Love you guys. Once again fantastic build!!
These two jokers! Best combo and my favorite Fishy RUclipsrs. Don't take themselves seriously with decent content. Thanks
The loaches happily scooting about was definitely my favorite bit XD
Amazing! Came out very natural looking!!!
Still loving the aquascaping bromance files! - really cool tank too
Neat. Those 2 plants... Elodea and the other one. I had not seen here those plants in this area. I had them back when I had my big tanks between the early 80s and early 2000s. Thanks for the memories.
This is my favorite build yet! I've been inspired to try a "temperate" scape with a spare tank and some parts I've been wanting to put together. You guys make such a delightful team and I love seeing the bits of the shop in each video so a full store tour sounds just what I'd enjoy.
I built a similar one but with a plastic tank for a top view and it's kinda cool.
I thoroughly enjoyed this build video! I had never seen an aquarium like it before, anywhere!
this was really cool! loved the energy of "let's just try this and see what happens" and also not cleaning the tank glass before water
I love how professional both you guys are plus now Matt in the MD fish tanks he a part of it now sweet big wins from the USA
This was one of my favorite builds in a while. I think you could end up with the Loaches breeding a bunch, that scape is perfect for them. Thanks for the video!
the pufferfish that came up at 18:57 made me cackle. hes just like "oh, whats goin on ere?
love your and matt’s repertoire. i could watch you two shoot the shit in the pub and be just as entertained as you two scaling a tank. keep up the awesome work
Love this! Before you fished-up, I was yelling "Hillstream Loaches!" at the screen! Can't wait to call in and see it.
I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do a tank like this for some hill stream loaches!! Totally cool you guys
Wow this was off the chart. What an amazing idea and such a centre piece . I was so concerned the glass wouldn’t take that pressure but it obviously does. Great project .
Really inspires me, the arrangement of the aquarium is amazing, greetings from goldfish cultivators in Indonesia
am i the only one who realises the tilted tank does nothing? the water stays level... they could have just made a gradient and a pump on the side to create a flow
20 odd years ago aquariums were really popular, the industry maxed out people got fed up of the mess and up keep then you could find abandoned aquariums all over the place, same things occurring again..
these store builds are so cool
Just started the video, but HUGE question, we hear how important level is for tanks because of the concern over the prolonged, uneven pressure on the edges causing the silicone to give up.
How did you guys strengthen the seams to keep it from losing a pane on the far end?
super unique design , GREAT WORK MD and MATT!
am i the only one who realises the tilted tank does nothing? the water stays level... they could have just made a gradient and a pump on the side to create a flow
My favourite 'fish shop' aquarium so far. Good work, fellas!

Danny's haircut looks good! Let him know.
This tank is really fun. I have a 40 breeder peninsula style where the 2 longest sides look completely different depending on what side you view from. My new favorite style
I have only discovered your channel, I love it. Really enjoyed this video, humours, educational and a pleasurec to watch. Thanks.
I love this tank. Imagine if that tank is twice as big. Or even three times as big. That would be so wow.
Keep up the grind. MD and FSM!!!! Great work as always.
3 words for you to research.......laminar flow pump. I think this would give you the best river high flow high oxygen set up ever. They are pricey but the effect is amazing. Alternatively you could use a pond pump 700 gph output with a slotted pipe diffuser to spread the flow with a bio fall dumping into the tank. Just some ideas thought you might like.
What an amazing tank, love the fish in there!
Absolutely not an expert of this world but I reckon the effort put in this project and from an outsider WOW what a wonderful aquarium!!! Amazing!
Flo is the real unsung hero of these videos😂
You guys are the best! Keep working together!
Such great tank! I love danios and I'm happy that u FINALLY did something for them 😆
MD, I am not sure if you have a full time job going on, but you should definitely run your own shop! Where you will be able to do all kinds of scapes of your own method!
I think that's exactly what he does lol
😀You two are so entertaining! "We're trained professionals" followed by MDs laugh, and "Always wear a mask" got me laughing so much. Appreciate the content guys, keep it up
White Cloud Mountain Fish. Cold water, easy breeders, active, and beautiful!
Another great video! I have a tank in mind for hill stream loaches but I've been putting it off due to my current lack of space 😅 gotta get that sorted out so I can set that tank up after seeing how beautiful this turned out.
New to the channel, been binge watching from South Carolina. Beautiful scapes, I'm really enjoying it! Especially the bromance between you and Matt😁.
Getting actual reticulated hill stream loaches for the tank would look amazing and they would stand out better than those Borneo sucker. A nice little group of stiphodon goby’s would also look amazing!😁

i love the pufferfish randomly in the background like "whatcha doing guys??"
I recently set up a tank with the same fish, didn’t know they liked fast flowing water, thanks for the tip ❤
Novel idea. Well explained and executed. Bravo!
Friends that bring out the best in you. Lol love it guys great job!
What is the value in tilting the tank vs banking the substrate? The water flow is straight instead of down? And won't that compromise the stability of the aquarium?
None and yes
“Cobble is probably a small boulder” “That’s a NICE boulder” - Matt 😂😂 @ 12:05
You guys are great thinkers great job ... planning excellent.... outstanding job
It reminds me of a pinball aquarium the angles anyway.. love it
This is actually the best scape I've watched, i love your banter, and the tank turned out amazingly. I love it, the fish are beautiful ❤ i hope they love their new home. Well done lads. i LOVE the Madusa Plec ❤❤❤❤❤looking forward to seeing more 😊❤
