    Thanks for the clarification. For years I've had a Peavey mixer as well as a Samson mixer and tried to run a floor monitor from the "Monitor" outs and they never quite worked. Explains why when I did, the output came from the Main Level faders, not the Monitor faders. It would help if "Monitors" meant floor monitors instead of auxiliary sends. How is a beginner or novice supposed to know this. Anyway, you've been a great help. Thanks again.

    This is perfect. Thanks. But I have one more question. Im going to buy a powered mixer, two unpowered speakers, and one unpowered sub woofer. And of coarse the monitors. I understand where to plug in the two speakers but I do not know where to plug in my subwoofer. It comes with 2 speakon connectors but my mixer only has two speak on outputs which are uses for the speakers. So im kind of confused on exactly how to hook up speakers and a sub woofer.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  10 лет назад

      You will need to go over all your manuals which should cover this. Use some forums for help and more detailed information. There are several ways to wire live set ups using all these components and way too much information for this comment area. Generally using passive systems: mixer -> crossover -> main /sub power amps -> mains/subs speakers. Larger consoles have a dedicated sub out on them to connect to power amps and subs or to powered subs. A blanket answer is not what I want to give you because there are a lot of variables I don't know about your system.

    Thanks for the video. My mixer looks a lot like this, 2 aux outs. Problem is, I use one of these aux1 for my powered sub, and aux2 for my effects box. Is there any other "aux"-like out that would allow me to add a monitor to my set up (perhaps if I purchase an adapter of some kind)? Also, is it bad to use a "main out" which is getting powered by an amp for a already powered speaker?

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  7 лет назад

      You want monitors on an Aux output because you need to send each channel to the stage mix. You can use a subgroup out for the sub. Be sure to send each channel to the subgroup you want to use. Newer mixers have a sub out on them you may want to upgrade your mixer.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  3 года назад

      Out Aux 1 to the powered monitor(s) Aux 2 for a 2nd monitor mix ect. Use aux 1 (2) on the channels to get the monitor mix needed. If they are not powered monitors run from aux out to power amps then to speakers. Wiring is easy, getting a mix thats the harder part. Technically you should use a 31 band graphic eq between the power amps and speakers to eliminate feedback sources but that's a whole other lesson.

    I am a solo artist using backing tracks and have been using in ear monitors for a few years and would like to dispense with them. The trouble is you cant tell what sort of mix you have FOH ( mic volume to music volume) as i control everything on the mixer and I am usually standing behind my speakers. If I connect a stage monitor to my aux send I still wont be able to hear the FOH mix correctly. I would like to know if there is a way to connect 1 stage monitor to my mixer and get the mix that the public are hearing. I want to be able to control the monitor volume on the mixer. The main mix coming through the monitor is important to me as I am a solo artist and have no one to mix for me.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist

      You can for driving monitoring speakers which are not powered. Say inside a studio. But the signal sent out is the same as the stereo master buss. You can’t do a stage monitor mix for performers.

  • @mzmudy
    @mzmudy 6 лет назад +1

    This is a good discussion, but I still have a question. As a solo performer I use the xlr jacks to go to 2 powered speakers (the main speakers); I have a RC 300 looper connected through effects send and aux return (send goes to input on RC 300; return goes to output on RC 300) so everything that gets plugged into the mixer, regardless of channel, can get looped. Where on the mixing board to I plug in a small stage floor monitor for myself? Which jack? The main speakers are too far away so I need to be able to hear myself playing/singing. I am using the Xenyx x1222USB mixing board. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  6 лет назад +2

      If the looper is on Aux 1 move it to Aux 2 and run powered monitor speakers for yourself off the Aux 1 send. Aux 1 is typically the monitors not FX or other gear. You can create your monitor mix using the Aux1 control on each channel the same way you send channels to your looper, so that you can hear what you need to hear, which is usually different than the audience. This setup will give you personal monitors on stage mixed one way, your looper mixed another and then the front of house speakers yet another. Fully flexible. I am thinking the Xenyx has more than 1 aux send of course. I hope that gets you where you want to be.

      Looking at your mixers specs it looks like you have one aux out were you have the rc300 hooked up. But it does also have monitor outputs. So plug powered monitors in there and use the channel monitor controls to obtain the mix you need.

    Hello again, Got the mixer fired up. How do I get effect/reverb to the monitors, also what the best effects for a large room, using what the Yamaha board has,another thing I had thought of was using an effect processor for all the channel, any input on how to do this? You have been a great help to us here at our jamboree in pelham ga.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  4 года назад

      Watch my video on using aux sends for channel effects. Effects on Aux sends can be used across all channels. Effects are only used when needed. They can enhance your sound in good or bad ways. Try setting up a good mix without effects before experimenting in that area. A room has it's own sound, reverb, adding more in the pa can really mess up how your system sounds. You need to master equalizing for the room to get rid of bad reflections and enhancing freq's which are not clear. There are no one step solutions. Learning how to do live audio is a very exciting but also very time consuming. I have a starter set of videos on mixing I suggest you watch them all. All functions of a mixer are related to other functions, especially effects. Read the manual as well on the mixer, can be boring but will be beneficial and is the most important thing you can do first.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist

      You need to route the fx you want to the aux 1 buss. Find the manual and read up on how to use the fx section of the board so you can setup the routing the way you want it. If it will do what you want that is. If I remember right the FX faders have buss buttons next to them. Select the busses you want to hear the fx on.

Will I be able to get an even sound if I'm using this and XLR inputs to my mixer. • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  7 лет назад

      You will be fine, just get some adapters for the XLR connections to the house system. XLR are refered to as balanced cables, 1/4" come in both balanced and unbalanced. Find out if the 1/4" outputs on the mixer are balanced or not so you can use the correct adapter.

    What is the Sub Input pr output on the mixer. Do you know what's that for?

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  3 года назад

      One meaning will be "Sub" groups. One Sub fader for multiple channels assigned to it. Usually at least two groups but can be as many as 8 on larger boards. So assign all drum mics on a kit to say Sub1. Control the volume of the whole kit on 1 fader. Another example would be a vocal quartet of say 4 singers singing to a backing track. Balance the separate channels and assign to Sub1 and adjust the vocalists volume against the backing track without having to ride 4 faders. Also could mean an output for a sub woofer. Usually located next to the main faders.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  2 года назад

      I suggest a larger mixer with 4 aux sends. Otherwise, you're stuck buying another set of mic cables and a stage splitter as well as another mixer. For the cost all of that, you can buy an upgraded 16 ch. mixer with 4 aux sends.

    • @jeffw1962

      Make money, put it into a band fund. Get at least a 16ch. digital mixer and powered speakers. I spent around $10,000 on my old PA. No digital back then. I wouldn't even glance at anything not digital if I were to build a PA today. Speakers would be self-powered. I have a Presonus 16.0.2 and it could easily handle any small band out there. $1200 I never regretted spending for my home studio and would use it live in heartbeat if I were to return to live engineer work. That's my advice to anyone wanting to perform in a live venue. Oh and use eBay and pawn shops. Don't buy it all new, resale sucks no matter what you paid for it. lol Wish you the best, I have other videos teaching about audio gear. You should check them out. Knowledge is power!

    I am trying to config one mixer to do two separate mixes....right now I am stuck with jumping between monitors and Foh using one at a time. Which is running my eqs crazy and my mind. I wish for Foh to pump music and drum mix while my monitors throw only vocals. 4 eqs 32 band is what I was planning. I tried leaving the speaker processor and Foh and eqs all hooked as normal. Then used the 1/4 jacks right next to the xlr main outs which said "parallel"...to a dual eq then to separate power amp and then to monitors. Only one side of the eq worked though. I have two dual eqs and they both worked that way. Now I have shifted everything to just vocal monitors which I doubt my Foh will be able to stand if I unjack and pump music back through and drums without re - equalizing.I run that way for practicing drums and listening to tunes in general .....and recording live at a hot volume with a zoom q3hd . Now I'm thinking about using both dual eqs on the monitor mix.one for each side I am bound to get both to work either that or run them in a line and eq both as a 4ohm hot mess.Question is should I just get another mixer for my vocal monitor mix? That way I can have my drums and music separate as its own monitor mix with music if needed. I also tried running the music into the monitors and using the mic channels to adjust the microphone to match that is great if I stay away from the monitors.like 20 feet. As for eqing for a live performer standing 5 feet from a monitor doubtful. I should have left the mic channels dead center but I got a perfect music mix with eq then proceeded to get a perfect mix with mic then moved closer to the monitors deleting feedback frequencies.mics sound great. Will check music tomorrow I am expecting mud we'll see. Two monitor mixes is preferred....

      @TheGospelGuitarist  6 лет назад

      You are right. Going out the aux send 3/4 into an eq 31 band is a must on monitors, then to the amps and monitors or powered monitors. Double check in that the masters are up on the board and cables are good of course. Make sure all switches are set correctly for the sends. Just be sure to follow the flow though the mixer. Draw it out if you need to in order to visualize your setup. Hope that helps..good luck!

      Run the Aux 1 to the compressors first then to the speakers. Sorry. You'll need two compressors one for each set of speakers. Each dbx unit has 2 in it.

      The aux send control on each channel controls the amount of that channel sent and the master Aux controls in the master section controls the groups Aux 1 and Aux2 respectively.

    Hi there, how do I connect the stage monitor aux send to the snake? my snake has all xlr connections but the aux send is a jack connector. I would just use a converter cable however the xlr is for balanced signals and long distances whereas a jack is normally used for unbalanced and short distances.. thanks

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  9 лет назад +1

      nigelE You could still use the xlr lines. Just use a high to low impedance converter. They look like a large adapter, but cost around $15 each. That way you are converting the high imp output from the AUX send to a low imp for the long snake. You will need an adapter at the amp end though to convert the female end of the snake into a male to plug into the amp of speaker. The other thing you could (should) do is upgrade your snake to include at least 4 sends.

    • @nigelE
      @nigelE 9 лет назад

      TheGospelGuitarist thank you. I had a spare acoustic guitar DI/preamp which takes a jack in and converts to xlr out. I used that to send the monitor signal down the snake to the stage monitors. I guess it does the same thing as the converters you mention. It also has EQ and ground lift and stuff

    Can i use the monitor out to record the sound from the mains to a laptop? Now i have used the red and white tape (aux) out but for some reason the recorded music clips. And there is no volume control on the mixer for that. If i can use monitor out that one has a volume control (dual mono to 3.5 mm jack stereo). Lowering the mains is no option. lowering the input on the laptop doesn't work either it still clips. I encounterd the problem with 3 different mixers and with 2 different laptops.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  8 лет назад

      +Filip Wostyn Yes you can use the monitor outs of the mixer. Most mixers have a separate volume control for the monitor/headphone outputs.

      +Filip Wostyn I have used the monitor out with a dual mono to 3.5mm stereo just as you were wondering about and it does work. One thing I noticed with our setup was that I had to turn the monitor out control WAY down to avoid clipping (vol setting 1 out of 10)

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  8 лет назад

      If I were using my laptop for recording all the time I would buy a small recording interface to use with the laptop and plug the board into that. You gain lots of control that way plus the build in audio on laptops are not pro quality stuff.

    What type of cable is used to connect from AUX to amp for stage monitors? 1/4 Speaker cable?

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  7 лет назад

      Depend on what you gear uses. I would use the XRL connections if your equipment has them. Otherwise 1/4" cables. Not speaker cables, which look the same but built differently. Normally, you would run a snake return from the mixer to the amps on stage or powered monitors. Snakes will use either 1/4" for XRL returns.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist

      You need to check your mixer to see if the mains only are powered or the mains and monitor section is powered. Check the manual on wiring up the monitors.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist

      After a very quick look at the mixer you only have powered mains. You will need powered monitors to run off the aux outputs for stage monitors.

    how can i connect 2 pairs of monitors to a mixer and controll it with daw. ?

    • @TheGospelGuitarist
      @TheGospelGuitarist  7 лет назад

      There are several products out there for switching to different pairs of monitors in home/professional studios. Basically, you connect whatever unit you choose to the monitor outs of the mixer and then the switcher is where you connect multiple sets of monitors. You will need to google studio monitor controller/switcher to see results and check them all out. Another option could be to use multiple Aux sends but you can not control what you are listening through by the DAW as far as I know. But I am not familiar with every DAW out there either.

    • @TheGospelGuitarist

      Looking at the picture on the Peavey websites, your mixer is using "MON1" and "MON2". Connect your monitors to the MON1 and MON2 outputs in the master output section. Use the red controls on each channel to send the desired amount of the instruments to those monitor mixes. They just call them Monitor sends instead of Aux Sends.
