Tom Chambers for Hall of Fame | NBA Career Retrospective

- Tom Chambers remains the only eligible player with a 20,000 point NBA career who is not enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Becoming just the 20th NBA player ever to reach 20,000 back in 1995, Chambers was more than a volume scorer - he helped to evolve the way the game of basketball is played.
Chambers helped transform the Power Forward position into the modern “Stretch 4”. His ability to score in the low post, off the dribble, and shooting from the outside paved the way for today’s versatile Forward superstars such as Kevin Durant, Dirk Nowitzki, Giannis Antetokounmpo and others. Possessing extraordinary speed and leaping ability for his size, Chambers ran like a gazelle on the fast break, often finishing with high-flying acrobatic dunks - one of which is still recognized as among the greatest in-game dunks in NBA history.
Tom Chambers should be enshrined both for his outstanding career accomplishments and for his contribution to the evolution of the game. Frustratingly, there is little game footage available to make a truly comprehensive career retrospective, but I have endeavored over the years to collect what I can to put this mix together to help recognize and preserve Tom’s legacy.

Great upload. This video clip has way more stuff than I’ve ever seen and I’m always on the look out for Tom Chambers video clips or old classic games that he participated in. This thing even went back to high school and college. Very good testimonials from Marques Johnson, Bernard King, Kevin Johnson and Mark West who were great players in their own right, giving high praise for Tom-my favorite athlete ever. Bernard King would know a little about Tom’s offensive prowess being that his Washington Bullets surrendered 44 points to Tom in the Capital Center back in 1990-a record set for most points by an individual opponent in that building at that point in time. He’s always been a bit under appreciated and some things never change. Aside from his scoring skills, I took a strange joy in witnessing his occasional fire and brimstone outbursts with the referees and fellow opponents. You were (and still are) the man, Tommy Chambers!
Yet, Bill Bradley, Jamaal Wilkes and yes (I know I'll hear it) even James Worthy, are in cause of who they played with. Especially Bradley. Wilkes and Worthy are at least debatable. Bradley just DOESN'T belong, PERIOD.
@@Amick44 bradley part of greatest team to ever play. saw tom chambers as a high school player and he was destined for greatness even then. big man with guard like sensibilities and he could finish at the rim. tommy c not in HOF a travesty.
@@Amick44 Put Chambers on those Utah teams with John Stockton and Karl Malone and he would be in the 30,000 point club along with the Mailman. It would have been a scaled down version of the Showtime Lakers.
Should have been in for sure. IDK what he did to be not 😩
Tommy C should of been in the HOF long ago. He's long overdue like crazy!!
No question. A hall of fame player!
No reason why he's not in the HOF. I always have known him for his time in Seattle - He was one of a kind.
Played against Tom in High School, he had 50 points in Championship game when Fairview won. Colorado during that time had The best High School talent in the Country several teams in Colorado preps had two 7 footers on one High School Team. Also Joe Barry Carroll top pick in The NBA plus LaVon Williams from Manuel was 1st team parade all american, Tom was The best of all and only got better. Scored over 20,000 points in his career while going to college all four years, at the time only 22 players in history had scored that many points. Long overdue for Hall of Fame make it right.
His 50 points came Vs Wheatridge for 3rd place in the '77 Colorado State High School Class AAA Tournament .. Fairview got knocked out of the semifinals the nite before Vs Pueblo East by a very controversial call at the end of the game .. TC was & is The Best...
@@JohnnyMack59 best years for big men in colorado before or since. 76 to 78. chambers, magno, austin, rhodes, netherton, joe barry, bajima, and others im sure im missing. moved to pueblo in 1975 and saw netherton and pueblo east's great teams. netherton a very good player but chambers the best by far.
Its amazing and ridiculous some players slip through the crack of notoriety. TC is a HOF player. Dude was way ahead of his time.
Tom Chambers had it all one the best players to ever play definitely a HOFer hopefully sooner whether then later he gets in.
He definitely should be in the Hall Of Fame.He got my vote man.
For us that saw him play he is a hall of fame player hands down
Tom Chambers did some of the nastiest IN-GAME dunks I’ve ever seen..reverse dunks on contested fast breaks..reverse dunks driving down the lane in traffic..reverse dunks on ally oops in traffic..crazy
HUGE HOF snub...this needs to be righted NOW. Listen to the players who played against him. Chambers was a stud.
So underrated. You could’ve switched him with McHale and Boston still wins all those rings in the 80s
Maybe even better is switching Worthy for Chambers on the 80s Showtime Lakers with their high-octane fast break offense which perfectly suited Chambers' game play style and strengths. Chambers' career development was stunted earlier on by playing for teams that did not run-and-gun. Only after moving on to Phoenix and teaming with Kevin Johnson did he become the superstar player that he was meant to be, but by that stage in his career he only had a few years remaining of peak form.
TC24 agreed he would’ve been a monster with Showtime although I think Showtime would not have been as good because LA would have been heavy on PF’s with Chambers, M.Thompson, B.Thompson, Green and Rambis. Worthy was able to play SF a bit better than Chambers who was more suited as a PF but still a great great player
Well Magic played with him in that 87 All Star Game and TC went off and won the MVP. Chambers was a better finisher than Worthy, Worthy just played with Magic and the Lakers. If Chambers would have been on the Lakers they would have probably won more titles in the late 80’s (Pistons) and early 90’s (Bulls). He is 38th all time on NBA scoring list. He was like 25th when he retired. Definitely a HOF’er
BJSW534 I say that if Chambers and Bird had came into the NBA at the same time he would have been in Boston instead of Bird.Chambers was Bird in warp drive.
I'm shocked that he never entered in the NBA Dunk contest with his ability.
This video is perfect. Thanks for making it. TOM CHAMBERS BELONGS IN THE HALL OF FAME!
I have great memories of going to see the Utes with Chambers and Vranes with my Dad back in 1980-81. Tom is like other players of that generation who are all too often forgot about now by many fans, both old and mostly young.
NBA archive footage is tougher to come by from decades past and the ground breaking things that Chambers and others did are more common place today. But before the internet, young players who later became superstars mimicked players like Dr J (Irving), George (Iceman) Gervin, David Thompson and yes TOM CHAMBERS!
It's about bloody time to put Chambers into the The Hall of Fame.
Tom Chambers, Kevin Johnson, Tim Hardaway, Mark Price, Toni Kukoc. I can think of some that its about time they make into HoF
The hall of fame is a joke no knock on guys who made it but Mcgrady and Alonzo should not be in there b4 some of those guys
How is it that he isn't in the Hall of Fame? He was a Beast!!!! For real, for real!!!
This guy should be in the Hall of Fame ... He had a more productive career compared to some who are already in ...
I have watched the NBA for about 40 years. Chambers should definitely be in the HOF. I was at his 56 point game in Oakland, and then a few nights later he went for 60 in Seattle.!!!
Over 20,000 career points
4x time NBA All Star
NBA All Star MVP 1987
2x Time NBA All Second Team
Israeli League Champion 1996
Phoenix Suns Ring of Honor
No. 24 retired by Phoenix Suns
Utah Sports Hall of Fame 2010
Arizona Sports Hall of Fame 2019
He think he deserves to be voted in the Naismith Hall of Fame. Though I have to say how a great dunker he was it would have awesome if he had won at least one slam dunk contest. Also, why he never made more all star teams and or selected into all first, second, or third teams seems disappointing, along with never selected to play on any FIBA national team either.
If he had played in New York Boston, LA or somewhere like that he would be in the HOF. This is one of those times playing in a smaller market hurts that players career.
Its crazy he isnt a hall of famer
Tom Chambers deserv it! Wow! What an amazing player!
Just so you guys know Tom Chambers is my great uncle! Good video!
Older son and meslelf used to follow Tom, Kevin, X, Thunder from 88 to 94 and it was such enjoyment watching and reading box scores!!! AND WE ARE FROM UPSTATE NY AND FL? LOL
Four little words are keeping Tom from Hall of Fame and one is a four letter word beginning with F
FIRST UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just imagine if Tom started when he was 18 and played for lakers, bulls, celtics or knicks?
Hope to see him during this years nba finals!!!
THANKS TOM!!!
Great player. Was one of my very first favorite players. Was the best player on some good teams
Pretty Incredible I hope Tom gets the respect he deserves and gets his enshinement LDS Warrior TC24
He was so fun to watch back then
It's crazy seeing a 6'10 slashing forward that can leap. Fuck he was aggressive too. Needs to be in HOF 100%
he was big, athletic, and could shoot .... helluva player when he was with phoenix
This is the reason why their should be an NBA hall of fame!! So we can achknowledge Tom & other guys like Chris Webber who are`nt in!!
I never knew how dead nasty he was. Now I know.
@John Watson That was no longer the case after that dunk on Mark Jackson but the one he did on the front court of Boston playing with the Suns was the one that caught my attention!!!!!!
@@Just_another_Euro_dude Ask Boston how athletic he was.
@@Just_another_Euro_dude Check out his dunk on the frontcourt of Boston its downright vicious!!!!!!
The best way to put it, is if Ralph Sampson is in the Hall, Tom should be. Chambers is better than Sampson hands down.
Not to mention Bill Bradley & Jamaal Wilkes.
Compare his career to Bobby Jones, no contest on who was much better.
When I was watching basketball back then he was one of the most if not the most feared players to play against. Just flat out NASTY!!! No fear intimidating demoralizing dunks. Your team played against him it was a good chance your team was gonna lose that day. I thought this man was in the HALL yrs ago. Nobody else shouldn't go in until he's in FR FR
Chambers was everything that Larry Bird wished that he was when it came to athletic ability.
Yea he deserves to be in the HOF. At first I didn't think so. But any player that pours in 20k points has to be a. HOFer.
This was awesome thanks for making this
Unbelievable! I wish the Suns could play hard like this!
I have to admit this video changed my perspective on Tom's career (excellent as it was) a bit. I always felt Tom, Dominique Wilkins and Orlando Woolridge, good or great as each was, could've taken their game to the next level had they developed their passing more. Then perhaps, they could approach the Bird, Erving, Grant Hill, yes Scottie Pippen level. Or going back, John Havlicek, Rick Barry, Elgin Baylor, Billy Cunningham. High scoring stars who were excellent distributors as well. I felt that Tom, like Nique, had the ability to make (offensive) life easier for their less talented teammates. But that it was a part of the game they left more or less, unfulfilled.
Nonetheless, he was an offensive force for years and was one to be reckoned with. Yes, he deserves a Hall call. More than some others who have been enshrined. I don't want to get into those who I feel do not deserve election here cause frankly, I get pissed. So ..... HOF voters, recognize Tom, too!
SPOT ON AND WELL SAID!
You`re a tough critic, there are a lot of hall of famers that could`nt pass to save their live`s however I remember watching T.C. with seattle and than phoenix and he was dominant at times!! Maurice Cheeks, Dino Radja and Vlade Divac are in the Hall and Tom isn`t?
I agree with most of what you say. I think he gets in eventually.
@@winycityfightfan I felt Cheeks should've been in some time ago. Radja and Divac are in largely due to their European careers .
I couldn't agree more - Tom definitely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame and I hope they have enough sense some day (sooner rather than later) to vote him in.
Hype video aside, he's a classic borderline HOF case. You could make a case either way about him going in. He had a very good career with flashes of greatness. Top 20 player of his era (prime years mid to late 1980s) but probably not quite Top 15 and DEFINITELY not Top 10. Athletic and versatile power forward, he also developed a nice outside game later in his career. The question with him was did he do enough or not and for long enough at that level. His scoring figures during his prime were somewhat inflated by the fast-paced, open court style of the 1980s game with shots going up quickly and often. A good rebounder but not a great one, a good defender but not a great one, etc. It would be nice to see him make it, though.
He was good. Went to a few games in the 90’s here in Phoenix.
Fantastic player..those suns of the 90s were fun and him and kj were big part of it..hof for sure
the nba in the 80s was so deep these were the forwards chambers went up against:
bird
dr j
worthy
mchale
dominique
sampson
rodman
aguirre
cummings
mullins
barkley
malone
english
nance
green
tarpley
bailey
He gave my rockets fits for almost 13 years. Always thought he was right outside of the all time greats but definitely should have been a HOFer by now
I forgot about Tom. He isn't in the Hall?! Wow!!
How does Tom Chambers get skipped year after year for the HOF and players that have been retired less years than him get in. Adrian Dantley had to whine his way in!
It's a shame the 1990 Suns choked in the West Finals. They were up 6 points with 3 1/2 minutes left at home and let it slip away, and it was Chambers who was isolated on the final play and slipped and got stripped....if the 1990 Suns had gone to the Finals you would hear much more about Hornacek and Chambers as superstars
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I know the exact play you're referring to. It makes me realize, looking back, how effective defensively Buck Williams was. I'm still surprised that the Blazers won Game 6. If the Blazers won Game 7, I wouldn't have been surprised, because it would have been in Portland. At Phoenix is always a tough place to win, for road teams.
Its a shame and disgrace to the league hes not in the hall of fame! He was a dominatplayer one of the best invthe nba! I hope they get their prejudices out of the way and put him in!
great, yes, hofer, yeah. Dominant, nah.
Awesome video, mate :)
He should be in the hall of fame.
tom is my dads friends dad. My dad has so many cool stories about him
He could definitely score and his highlights are really great but I grew up watching the game during his entire career and I never thought of him as a Hall of Fame player. He just never had that aura that made you worry when your team was facing him.
Chris Mullin has 2 Olympic Gold Medals, along with 5 NBA All-Stars, Ginobili has 1 Olympic Gold Medal (amazing for Non-American), 4 NBA rings, numerous accolades in Europe and 2 NBA All-Stars. Chambers has 1987 NBA All-Star MVP and 4 NBA All-Stars. Honestly, Chambers is far less accomplished compered to those 2, that's it's much harder for him to get inducted. Sikma has 7 NBA All-Stars and 1 NBA ring, and while it took him years also, he was too hard to ignore unlike Chambers.
Whoa! I looked him up after seeing he was in the alltime Top 50 scorers list. Really Tom Chambers? But that highlight at 0:26 alone should put him in. Let's go committee!
soon to be hall of famer !!!
Bernard King was awesome in the Gabe Kaplan film "Fast Break".
Chambers would thrive in today's NBA
Hof Hell Yes ,he ain't one of the very best ever but he damn sure should get into the same Hof Dino Radja just got into, along with many other players.
HALL OF FAMER!!!!
7:11 is the dunk that should talked about among NBA LEGENDS.
T-Tom
C-Chambers

I’m the last person to comment on this video two years ago this guy was my favorite player after magic in the 80s at the time
Tom C is well deserve to be HOF but he isn’t the only plus 20000 who’s not HOF. The second is Antwan Jameson
Jamison is coming up on HOF eligibility, but he was not yet eligible when this video was in production.
What about Jack Sikma ?
Sikma = 17,287 points. He's deserving of HOF enshrinement regardless.
Jack Sikma - 7-time All-Star
Tom Chambers - 4-time All-Star
Antwan Jamison - 2-time All-Star
Grand Funk and TC ought to be in their respective HsOF. No brainer
Definitely should be in hall of game!!
Greatest Mormon to ever play the game of basketball. (Jabari Parker still has time though)
bari is mormon. lol all my life in Chicago I ain't never seen a black mormon
Why isn't Tom chambers in the HOF? Come on. The man was great. I recommend everyone write to Jerry Colangelo to get TC into the hall where Cambers belongs.
How anyone that has scored 20,000 points in his career and isn't in the HOF is beyond me.
Bring back our Sonics
His hair cut was just of that of a 80's rock star.
Very surprised he's not in. He's got 20k career points, which is just about a "magic number" like 3k hits in MLB. Should be in.

CHAMBERS IS AS GOOD AS ANYBODY !
its a crime , the fact that he's still not in.
Get him in the Hall
If Chambers was in his prime in 1993, the Suns would’ve beat the Bulls
Gangster!!!!
Something's wrong if Tom Chambers doesn't make the N. B. A. Hall of Fame.
Pretty rare to see Worthy get blocked.
It’s outrageous that someone like Mitch Richmond is in the hall of fame but not Tom chambers
Unbelievable he’s not in the Hall of Fame
What’s wrong with you all?
IDK why he is not in the Hall of fame. It is a injustice
Before Dan Majerle there was Tom Chambers
Tom Chambers' snub is similar to Dave Kingman's. Dave had 442 career home runs and is the only 400 HR hitter not in the Hall of Fame. Great numbers but he struck out too much and his BA was too low. Not sure what is wrong with Tom's numbers. Maybe not enough All Star appearances. A Ring would have helped.

If Mitch Richmond is in the HoF, so should Chambers.
Put TC in the HOF already 🏀...
I still don't understand why he is not in the hall of fame folks?
Put Chambers on the Celtics or the Lakers and they would never ever lose. It's a joke that Kevin McHale is in HOF and Chambers isn't. McHale
was slower, had no driving ability, never passed, wasn't an outside shooter, and played good interior defense, but not away from the hoop. Chambers was a much better athlete, and he could do so much more.....but he didn't have Bird, Johnson, or Jabbar for teammates.
who today is tom chambers
Blake Griffin
THATS WHATS MISSING
AMERICAN WHITE STAR
I don't watch it much now, but I always thought Tom was in the HOF from way back. What's going on here? He was FUN to watch! Think about a Larry Bird-like mind, but able to jump! Seriously, he could jump. High. I would like to have seen Bird vs. Chambers in a 1 on 1 series, 2 out of 3 when both were in their prime. I don't think Larry could stop Tom. I'm pretty sure Tom couldn't stop Larry, either. Never happen, but would have been cool.
I disagree with the bird like mind, bird was also an elite defender and passer cant really compare the 2
Go Utes!
Is race a factor?
Certainly, Tom Chambers belongs in the Hall Of Fame, but It's harder to get there if you haven't won a championship. But I don't think thats Tom Chambers problem..... His problem is "the- people of the- media" was instructed to shun him out, if you will? Tom Chambers a victim of this "politically correct" B.S. There's a video highlight of Tom Chambers jumping over the 6'7" Michael Cooper(L.A. Laker), and successfully completing the slam dunk! You get to see the dunk over the 6'3" Mark Jackson, but they won't let you see the dunk over the 6'7" Michael Cooper......
Rodions kurucs of BKN Nets
Awesome animal
He is not in????
If C web and T Mac can be HOF, why Tommy gun cannot?
When you see a very good player in the HOF named Chris Mullin and you compare him with TC ya gotta ask why is TC left out of the HOF? Now Mullin had a better shooting percentage but no rings. There are other players as well in the HOF whose career stats do not match Tom's. I think Tom sadly as a younger player came across as being moody and cold. He was the first unrestricted free agent in the NBA was he not? The Andy Messchermitt/Dave McNally of baseball type? The HOF should be about talent on the court. Chambers had it and did it well enough to be there.
Where's the ring tho? 😈😄
A.k.a drago
THIS WHATS MISSING IN THE NBA
AMERICAN BORN WHITE STAR
When your 6 10 and you literally jump over a man....???
Chambers soooo much better than McHale.
