My sister and her husband were vegan for a long time but she hated to mess about in the kitchen, not necessary I know and a really abrupt transition to legumes caused some gastro chaos, so they went keto … and a really fit present energetic guy.husband developed gout -- which I associate with Hogarth's the Rakes' Progress or the impossible cookbooks in the 19th century by Mrs Beaton who I'm pretty sure died in her late 20s possibly not from a surfeit of the food she became famous for , or Charles Dicken's wife in same category. These were privileged women at the height of unregulated Industrial Revolution; agriculture suffered; plant diseases from the 1870s on were endemic, most famously the Irish potato famine … but coming back to anecdote, my much loved sis plus husband are vegan again (whole food plant based) with some encouragement from a neighbour with some property where she can forage for wild celery etc., so everyone is now feeling way better. Whatever gets people in this direction is fine by me; I selfishly want my brilliant sister who remains as always my best friend in my life as long as possible. … long ramble not a good place to talk about the work of Valter Longo. Tx for patience anyone reading!

It was Andrew "SpudFit" Taylor who was my white crow, after being a True Believer in Paleo/Keto for decades. When I stumbled on the spudfit videos, eating nothing but potatoes for a year, I predicted that he'd gain weight, have elevated triglycerides, muscle loss, elevated FBG, and so on. I followed his channel, as he was periodically evaluated by a doctor. When none of the things I predicted happened, and his health instead improved by every objective marker, I had to concede that my premise, the insulin-carbohydrate theory, was simply wrong. I tried a short (3 week) all-potato experiment on myself, and even in that short time my lab results improved dramatically and I dropped a significant amount of weight. After that, I went to whole plant foods 99.9% of the time.

Generally, my meals consist of 3 types of veggies (that grow above ground) and some form of protein (either meat or fish). After dinner snack is usually 85% dark chocolate and a variety of different nuts. My triglycerides have gone from 146 to 59; LDL particle number is 900; TG / HDL Ratio is .66 and C-Reactive Protein is .44. He forgot to mention an important aspect in Keto. Once in ketosis, your body burn fat while sleeping. Also, he forgot to mention that carbs (rice/bread/pasta etc) raises insulin in your blood stream, sending a messagz to your metabolism to store fat. In fact, Carbs turn in to sugar in your body which also makes you fat.
Low card diet in our era, is not a cash cow, there are thousands of honest nutritionists. Almost all of them tell you that in first few days you will lose water, and once adapted, in ketosis, then you will be losing fat.
Also, Keto alone doesn't work for most of people, including intermittent fasting is the key, and the more you stay on this diet the more you need tondecrease your fat intake to keep the results coming.

@@mariamhussain5554 you can do Keto diet: stop eating all kind of sugar and sauces and sweet fruit, and all flours/bread/rice/grains/pasta.
Focus on protein and veggies (green veggies) and healthy fat such as olive oil and coconut oil and omega3 in fish. You should watch your protein intake, the protein portions are very important.
Finally, you should eat twice a day not three times, so either you remove breakfast or dinner and no snack in between. Eating snacks during the day will spike your insulin level, meaning you will store food as fat and that's not optimal for weight loss. All these changes are very hard the first week, but it's worthy down the road.

I didn’t have nearly as much the recommended fat intake as I just couldn’t do it to myself in fact, I didn’t check my macro levels at all, just sticking to olive oil, grass-fed butter, cheese, avocado, walnuts, macadamia nuts, savoury fruits & vegetables & vegetarian protein sources keeping my daily carb levels to around 45g/day. Water loss in most diets is common in the first week - ten days. How is sustained weight loss on keto after three-six months explained?

  • @graciandaniele
    @graciandaniele 2 года назад +2

Sorry to hear so much ignorance in the name of science. Real Keto is not all that fat from butter and so on. It’s about % of calories coming from “good” fat as avocados, mtc oil, olive oil, olives, nuts, salmons and so on.
My experience: I never made it to loose fat and not muscle with a normal low fat diet, Mediterranean or zones or whatever. And it was suffering! With keto I almost never suffered, lost 10kg in 45days and didn’t loose not even a gr of lean muscle. Now I’m on a cyclic keto, with some more carbs from veggies and fruit. And I’m doing super fine. Also my triglycerides and acid uric went back to normal after the first week of keto. So, sorry, but this “study” here is not a serious one.
I’m not saying other diets don’t work, they just didn’t for me. Keto did.
It would be nice to be more serious. That’s it.

    2. What is the physiological explanation? Long term water loss doesn't make sense to me, but lean body mass / muscle would. Is it possible that a minimal amount of glucose is needed to prevent gluconeogenesis from protein breakdown? Or, if glucose would largely be replaced by proteins, would we then be able to prevent muscle protein breakdown as there is sufficient in circulation for the gluconeogenesis in the liver?

When it comes to my experience eating plant-based, I've been vegan for over 4,5 years and I was a vegetarian for over a decade before that. It's much more difficult to eat the same number of calories of meat, eggs, avocado, etc. Dr. Greger doesn't even go into this fact AT ALL. Hopefully he'll address it in a future video. It definitely feels like he's cherry picking the studies for this video.

We evolved over millions of years eating animal fat and protein. No agriculture, no grocery stores. People in the northern latitudes would go months during the winter, no vegetables, no edible plants in the winter, yet survived and thrived.
Obesity, diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease and many other diseases all at record highs now. High glycemic carbs and vegetable oils and such don’t oxidize as well as the good fats. I am 53 and lost a tonne of fat, eating more steak, eggs, butter, unsweetened oatmeal with berries and nuts. My veggies are lower glycemic.Keto diet allows for lots of veggies, berries and nuts.

Let me say I love Dr. Greger's work on plant based eating and he has had much to do with my going fully vegan about 6 years ago.
However, I have lost more weight, lowered blood sugar and have more energy as a keto vegan. My weight loss alone seems to contradict the 17 man study. This video assumes that by eating more fats, one would increase total calories and negate the fats burned which hasn't been the case for me. There is a loss of craving to eat carbs and I actually eat far less calories. So the number of reduced calories by eating far less carbs has been much greater than the extra good fat calories.
I used to be low fat vegan but plateaued in insulin resistance improvement. I went to vegan keto because the fat burning vs glucose burning made allot of sense to me. The only difference between keto vegan and what Dr Greger and the Forks Over Knives group of Doctors espouse is keto vegan increases the good fats such as coconut oil, avocados, nuts and seeds instead of starchy veges such as potatoes, rice, corn, wheat etc. I am still a vegan and I get the benefits of no animal products. So we're no that far apart. I also stay away from most fruits other than limes and do several low glycemic berries such as blueberries, blackberries and strawberries.
The other thing that drew me to keto vegan is that of the three macros, carbs is the only macro that humans do not need at all. It doesn't make sense to me to up the starchy plant carbs in the face of that fact and the blood sugar spikes I get from them.
Additionally the fat caused cell insulin resistance concept does not explain why so many diabetics have dramatic A1C drops on keto (vegan or not).

As for water weight, it's not a gimmick if you feel better without it, and you consider your natural state to be without it. Same goes for not shitting and farting all day. Adding carbs to 45g-50g day helped my sleep but it’s still not perfect. It was something like this: the body is not wasteful, and it's easier to store dietary fat as fat than to convert it from carbs to fat. So when we eat it, out body wants to hang onto it 'just in case' That doesn't mean we CAN'T eat fat, but when trying to lose weight, that should be the first place to cut. I think the video was 'vegan nutrition: pure and simple' We all talk about how weight loss is important, but in reality, our bodies want to keep us from starving. Here in the US most of us are overweight, but throughout history [including now] starvation is a real thing. Hard to relate to with literally tons of food within reach. Keto keeps protein to about 15-20% which is a major macro difference. I do agree that animal products are unhealthy in any percentage. But a vegan can also be keto by staying away from starchy plants. This is what has worked for me and I'm not disagreeing with Dr. Greger on most of his work.

I can speak only from personal experience as someone with severe metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and extremely high cholesterol.
Going vegan lowered cholesterol, but not enough to eliminate medicine. Blood pressure has some effect lower, but still medicated.
On vegan I did lose 25 pounds but hit a plateau that just would not break. I even started adding weight. The doctor said eat less. Really? I am eating 1500 to 2000 calories a day now and literally starving all the time.
I decided to take matters into my own hands. I would eat less, but I would bring back in healthy fats, some healthy meats and cheeses. The majority of my food intact is veggies.
I eat ZERO wheat, wheat products, grains, sugar, sugar products, fruit. None, zip.
And while in fact, I am eating a little less, I am not hungry.
I have now lost 50 pounds. Cholesterol is normal and I am cutting back, hopefully completely on BP meds as it has gotten too low. I am far healthier now with the reintroduction of moderate amounts of healthy fat and some animal products than I was vegan. And remember, I am now not hungry and craving.
Grieger is disingenuous suggesting one size fits all as well as being EXTREMELY disingenuous picking out just one study at a time. I am disappointed in him as a long time viewer. But what the hell, why should he be any different than any of the others.

OK, I'm glad you found something that worked for you. However, keep in mind that this is anecdotal. The balance of scientific evidence is clear that meats and cheeses are not as healthy as whole-food plant-based nutritional alternatives for the great majority of people. This is especially the case if they follow sensible dietary guidelines.
There are 10 sources used in this video and many of them are analyses of multiple studies. When you claim that Dr Greger is picking one study at a time I think you're missing the wood for the trees. He's highlighting some interesting findings but this does not stray from the overall findings of these multiple studies.

Good morning! For most of 2018 I was doing keto according to Dr. Wahls, then in 2019, I started moving towards plant-based high carb, low fat in a Dr. Swank/Dr. Esselstyn-like way. I noticed that I could lose body fat both ways, low carb, or low fat, especially combining IF with low carb and eating fewer daily meals due to the increase in satiety on high fat meals. I prefer high carb low fat, but felt an increase in the health symptoms I was addressing (which isn’t obesity, as I have never been obese anyways, but mostly within 170 to 190 lbs) so returned to keto and the benefits of ketones. Still wondering if you think there is any application for keto treating cancer, which you seem to completely disregard in the first video, citing that one example of ketones actually fuelling one type of cancer, which is surprising given what I have been hearing Dr. Seyfried, and others say. That should be investigated thoroughly for sure!

    • @StillTrustNo1
      @StillTrustNo1 5 лет назад +4

and he mentions that further investigation is being done but isn't done yet. Maybe you should rewatch the video if you missed that.
Also the BRAF V600E Genetic mutation allows cancer cells to use ketones to grow faster.
The mutation is present in 100% of hairy cell leukemias, 50% of melanomas, 10% of colon cancers, and 5% of multiple myelomas
You should look that up on pubmed for yourself.

This video will be good in 1972 promoting a low fat diet versus a low carbohydrate diet losing more weight on a low fat diet!
What are the dates of the studies that you're Trying to educate us with. Cherry picking articles from 1944 to 1995. There's much better research on the keto diet for weight loss then you're showing us.

My own study: N=1 Well formulated Keto Diet for 12 month:
    -105 pounds in 12 months.
-Significantly high resting blood pressure went down to 125/80,
-fasting glucose down from weekly average of 140 to 98,
-triglycerides, LDL and HDL within normal parameters (improvement over baseline values).
    -Improvement of Liver values
Psychologically: Never Hungry, fell energetic and motivated enough to hit the gym after 10 years.
So perhaps there is a significant disconnect between academia and real life. My story above has been reproduced by thousand others.
Or is there something else at play here? Perhaps a conspiracy? If we are all healthy all of a sudden, big Pharma would lose big bucks, and doctor office would have to shut down... maybe artificially sick people are an industry that needs to be kept alive? Cherry-picked and misinterpreted data to fool the public?
And perhaps the secret of the Keto diet is much more simple: Unless most "recommended" diets, the Keto diet is not calorie restrictive. People are not hungry. They don't feel constantly starved, cranky, and miserable. Hence, compliance is often high, and people stick with it.
At least that was the situation in my case. N=1
N=1 is not that statistically relevant, I hear you say? True. Yet, between 2003 and 2018 there were 62 RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED Trials, and ALL showed that a low carb, high fat diets are more successful in achieving weight loss, than high carb, low fat diets. You failed to bring this up in you "factual" video.
Finally, you do not look at the action of Insulin and its influence on weight gain and how reducing insulin can promote weight loss. How do you achieve reduced insulin levels? You guessed it: Low carb diet! Perhaps look at this: ruclips.net/video/LRHir1k9jmE/видео.html

I'd like Greger to explain to me how going low-carb (no longer Keto) means I no longer get hungry, can go 12 hours or more without even thinking about food, and can enjoy large portion sizes nor feel like I'm ever depriving myself.
This is coming from someone who loves food and habitually ate in excess of 3000 calories per day before going low carb.
It's an amazing way of eating to achieve satiation, but I doubt many of you sheep around here are interested in opening your minds and admitting that a different method can be beneficial for some.

I used to like dr greger until I realized he was the head of a vegan cult and only look at studies that back his world view. I have effectively lost weight and kept it off doing keto for years now. I’m not buying this video at all. I’ve done too much personal research to take advice who thinks veganism is our natural diet. When we can’t get all the nutrients we require from plants but can from animals.

    • @broddr
      @broddr 5 лет назад +3

pbpb253 -- is it possible that your previous diet was the typical industrialized diet with a lot of sugary drinks and bread? Simple carbohydrates cause an insulin spike and subsequent glucose drop which triggers hunger. Complex carbohydrates in whole foods are absorbed more slowly and, without that extreme insulin spike, they satiate for a longer time.
When I switched to a whole food plant based diet, I ate _more_ and still lost 16 pounds. Note that losing weight wasn't even a goal for me, it happened without any effort. I went from high healthy BMI (just below overweight) to right into the middle of the healthy BMI range.
And for @Dirty Sinatra, what nutrients _exactly_ are missing from a vegan diet? Answer, only one, B12. And the only reason that's missing is because only bacteria make B12 and our industrialized water systems, while eliminating harmful bacteria like cholera, also eliminate the helpful bacteria that previously supplied B12. Most cattle get B12 supplements either by injection or in their feed, because while being fattened up in feedlots they drink the same processed water we do. Vegans just eliminate the middle-cow and take our B12 directly.
Sure some nutrients, like zinc or selenium, can be an issue for vegans who can't tolerate or just don't like nuts and beans. Same with iron for women who menstruate and who don't eat sufficient beans and green leafy vegetables. But just because a vegan diet is insufficient for some picky eaters doesn't mean it's inherently missing any nutrients for the great majority.
And without sufficient vegetables where do you get your Folate (which was named after the produce it was first found in: foliage)? Or vitamin C? Or fiber? Or antioxidants? None of which are present in animal products.

Brad Hansen I was eating quite healthily there for a while, or what I thought was healthy.
Oats, fruit, greens, starchy Carbs, nuts, some seeds, lean animal protein, low oil consumption.
Ultimately, I don't believe the diet was satisfying enough, and I either consumed too many meals/calories, or would have too many binge periods.
Low Carb and significantly increasing Fats has worked effortlessly for me for well over a year now.
Of course, I pour over 100's of hours of YT videos and Podcasts on nutrition.
Certainly feel like I'm getting a handle on what works for me.

Brad Hansen what I despise about people like you the most is the fact that you just make leaping assumptions about people who have a differing opinion, view or approach. You assume that I eat a traditional American diet. Feed lot cattle and that I torture chickens and poke them full of antibiotics for some scrambled eggs. You assume that I haven’t followed dr greger since he started this channel. You assumed I haven’t lived off a plant based whole food diet for over 10 years. But what I bet you won’t say is What are the 2 most nutritionally dense foods for human consumption. I’ll give you a hint they’re not plant based and they contain every nutrient and vitamin the body requires for daily function. Stop making assumptions and do some real research. Dr greger can’t do all the heavy lifting for you.

This is nonsense. If you eat the same number of calories you won't lose weight unless more of your calories come from fiber. Calories in- calories out, that's all that matters to weight loss. If you want to lose body fat over weight, you have to keep insulin to a minimum, and the only way to do that is to reduce carbohydrate intake.

Intermittent fasting is much *much* harder to do on a vegan diet vs. keto diet. When you're fat adapted and your body runs on ketones, you can easily go long periods of time without eating. Whereas on a vegan diet with the blood sugar / insulin roller coaster, you feel the need to eat more frequently.

Brian Parsons Not ever being on the Keto side of things, you might be right in it being easier while fasting to a large extent if done properly since you’re keto adapted. I’d share some personal thoughts. Recently lost 30lbs over a little over a 2 1/2 month time frame eating a fully satiating whole food plant based diet and doing a 72hr water only fast at the beginning of each month. The experience varies widely from person to person, keto not withstanding. FWIW, first day of fast very mild hunger. 2nd day hunger came would come and go...normal I reckon. 3rd day no hunger.
