    As the song says: "I never thought that it would end." Those days were so carefree; school, a part-time job, and going to the beach with my girl Lynn. Life was so effortless back then. I am now struggling through my 62nd pain-filled year. How can it be 2023? It seems like 1974 was just a dream, a work of fiction.

      It was. I was 24 in college learning FORTRAN IV formula translation on IBM 360 using SPSS 6 statistical package as subroutines for statistical analysis. Some snotty kid named Bill Gstes had no idea what an Altair home computer kit was. Those were the days. I flew to London and spent a month there. There were white people all over. I’m not sure life was simple but straight forward. Things were what you thought they were. Cars were mechanical. Replaced by chips from Taiwan you can’t get now. That’s the point you world was basically under your control with a crescent wrench and we believed the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite.

      I know I can't be alone in agreeing with what you say.
      Many people mistakenly think the song's about a love whilst on holiday, but it's actually about a broken love between 2 high school students.
      I don't know if it's simply knowing what the lyrics actually are referring to which makes it bittersweet for me, or if it's the musical tags (the French horn playing Sibelius' Fifth Symphony and a few bars of Let's go to San Fransisco - also written by John Carter) played on the track's end and fade.
      I've no clue WHAT the above (@ericlurio246) is referring to, but It's NOT this song.

Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Fleetwood Mac. They even got Lynyrd Skynyrd to come to Buffalo. It was cool almost every band opened saying ( HELLO BUFFALO ) Buffalo people liked the music sold out almost every concert. Yes that Buffalo called ( SNOW CAPITAL OF USA ). True Lake Erie dumps 10-12 feet every winter. We got that name from 1977 Blizzard. Crazy storm it snowed everyday in December & January. City & Schools closed for 3 weeks. Us Buffaloians are baffeled why we get most snow of all Citys near 5 Great Lakes. ALWAYS WHITE CHRISTMAS IN BUFFALO. Hope I didnt scare you with all that snow we get, its true Im not Lyning

    This is an expertly written and arranged pop song for any era. Horns, strings, multiple harmonies, interesting bridge, musical and vocal hooks and a chorus melody for the ages!

    • @burlingtonbill1
      @burlingtonbill1 8 лет назад +4

      +severrian I love it, but it's always been slightly flawed for me with the too-long instrumental ending (which this video cuts off !), it needed a vocal verse & fade-out. It's obvious that this was a lip-sync performance - where's the "missing violin" at 1:42 ?

      +burlingtonbill1 of course not on this song, because it was playback, and these guys didn't actually play on the recorded album, bu Spencer James is quite proficient on the Synth guitar, which is a midi download able guitar which can actually add the sound of piano, keyboard and horns. Spencer Eddie and Robin carried on as First Class for a while. Spencer was in the supergroup Nightfly for a while before he was asked to join the Searchers after Mike Pender left. so theoretically, he could have produced most of those sounds on the guitar.

    These guys had captured some excitement with this song...They had bumped everyone off the charts. It was happy, positive, clean and well assembled. I think the world is still waiting for their follow up. Just the most irresistible song of the 70's. Both of my daughters loved this song the first time they heard it in about 2004. First Class had the most quintessential pop song of an entire generation. Tony Burrows had so many hits, they even called him the voice of the decade, I believe.

    I was 7 years in grade 3 when this song came out in '74 and head over heels in love with my classmate Sharon's 13 year old sister Joan, I used to think of her whenever it came on the radio and walk around the house in a trance with a stupid smile on my face, until I ran into her at our school's Halloween haunted house in the gym, Joan was a witch and grabbed my hand and stuck it in spaghetti telling me it was guts, I screamed my head off and started crying then promptly fell out of love with her after she called me a baby...
