Nice review, Leonard! Insightful stuff 👏
Glad you liked it…..and thanks for the great music.
I had the X2 and decided to not get the X3 but to wait for something with more resolution. Now I got the X4 and it is a nice upgrade with not just the resolution but also a much better screen and a ton of new features and usability improvements. Especially the configurable custom modes where you can prepare your specific settings for different kind of shots are great.
I can imagine the upgraded resolution from the One X2 to the X4 is very noticeable
I still have X1
@@Seekay92 It depends on what you do. I mix the videos from the Insta360 cam with my Lumix cameras. I had the GH6 and now I'm using the G9-II.
If I create a 90° view out of the 8k (for the full 360°), I get 2k. 90° is like a 18mm lens on a full frame camera. The result is FHD resolution in theory but there is a lot of de-squeezing and lens correction going on so it is not the best FHD quality that is coming out of it. On the other hand, I get action shots and angles that are completely impossible or extremely difficult with other cameras. The X2 had only 5.7k and even this was acceptable but I was sure I would get the next version of the camera if it has more resolution. First tests show, that it is a significant step up.
But cameras, video and taking pictures are my most expensive hobby, so for my budget, this whole X4 camera is less expensive than a good lens I might have bought for the Lumix camera. It improves the capabilities to create videos on the bicycle while riding so much that I actually didn't had to think about the upgrade more than a few minutes.
@@Seekay92 That’s about the only Insta360 camera I haven’t tried.
Thanks Leonard, interesting video. The technology is coming on leaps and bounds.
However, there is one thing that many reviewers fail to talk about. That one thing is audio. Somebody once told me that a nice image can make a great video, but bad audio can break it.
It would be great to know well the audio works, and what you use in order to get good audio.
I should say, your audio, as well as the video is great.
Absolutely correct about audio, especially for vlogs. If you can’t hear what someone is saying the pictures almost become irrelevant. I should have included an audio test in this video but in the vlog I released the other day I use the X4 with the Lark M2 radio mics. You can have a listen and see what you think
@@jollygoodvelo does the X4 have internal Bluetooth so you don't have to use a dongle?
@@FiveMinuteVelo There is some kind of Bluetooth but I don’t know if it connects to mics directly. I use a receiver plugged into the camera.
@@FiveMinuteVelo I was able to connect to my AirPods with the built-in bluetooth and use the AirPods as a mic.
I have a X4 and its a great bit of kit, I also have the rubber lens hood cover as well which protects it getting it out of my pocket or with having other stuff in the pocket as well. It is quite heavy so much so when I first used it I had it on my cheap selfie stick which had some serious sagging going on so I bought a insta360 one and that is so stout I could use it as a baton during a riot. Its great for fly by shot with the auto tracking feature no more doing double takes at the same spot its now all seamless. Will it replace my gopro? no not really but I think that's because I am still learning what the X4 can do in the mean time I will run both side by side. I do find in some circumstances it does get a little blown out but that is me being picky to be honest. Keep up the vids Leonard I am really enjoying them.
I think the X4 and some kind of regular action camera (GoPro or Action 4) is the dream team camera setup for us vloggers.
The 360 was cool in the first place, but the new features, just wow. Not a bad price for what you get either.
I really like using mine!
If you use the voice control, be sure to turn it off before you start editing....If the camera is on and you're trying to edit, sometimes it hears your "start recording" command from a clip and then it will turn on the recording mode
Good advice. Also, if you are doing a piece to camera it listens to what you are saying so you have to be very careful not to say words like ‘stop’ and ‘start’.
Great review, but I have a cycling curiosity. You and I are about the same size. What Trek bike do you ride, what kind of carbon wheels do you use, what tires, and what do you inflate them to? I'm sure we could discuss these topics for days, but just having some straight answers would really be helpful. Thanks in advance if it is something you don't mind passing on.
No problem. The bike is a 2014 Trek Madone 4.9 and the wheels are Winspace Hypers. (I review the wheels and; ruclips.net/video/zfGGzzV87hw/видео.htmlsi=0p4fMRTW8xD3RI70
And have a discount code (JollyGood10)
The tyres are Hutchinsons and I pump them up to around 90 PSI.
Hope that helps.
@@jollygoodvelo Thanks for that! 700 x 28 tires at 90 PSI?
@@Rocketrecliner Yes!
Are those stem and seatpost adaptors sold with the invincible selfie stick or it already came with the camera or what? People talke about this insta 360 camera but, no one tells us what accessories need to be purchased separately or what came in the package.
You have to buy them separately.
@@jollygoodvelo links to the products or at least their names so as to know what to buy?
@@Sir-Kay If you go to the Insta360 website and look for the Third Person Rear Mount and the Stem Bolt Mount it should pop up.
Looks superb but they just need to work on the invisible selfie-stick’s shadow 😂
That would be very good. Mind you here in the UK it’s not too much of an issue; we need sunshine for shadows.
Have you tried using the gestures to start and stop video recording while you are riding? The problem with the voice control is the wind noise when you’re out riding.
I haven’t but then I don’t really need to. The camera is close enough to me to be able to press the quick record button by hand.
@@jollygoodvelo You never have the camera mounted out in front?
@@joelberman5981 I doZ in fact that is the main position that I use. The camera is well within reach, though.
I have seen some of your carmera reveiw before and the wonder of the magic stick remove. I'm still wondering if they ever manage to remove the stick and the camera shadow...
That’s the dream. Alternatively just come to the UK right now where there is no sunshine. No sunshine means no shadow!
What's the nighttime performance like ? I would probably want to use something like this for evidence gathering in case of an accident as the 360 degrees capture seems useful for this ?
Low light performance isn’t really any better (or worse) than any other camera but I’m not sure evidence gathering would be the best use scenario. For that I would suggest an action camera with a rolling record function.

@@jollygoodvelo Thanks for the advice. I will take your suggestion on board as you are a camera expert ! BTW , you duplicated your comment which is good as it suggests you copy them before posting ? RUclips has quietly silenced dozens of mine but as Baldrick from Blackadder would say " I have a cunning plan " 🙂
@@dawn_rider I did post a reply but when I looked it was’t there so I posted a second one. Not sure what’s going on with RUclips comments sometimes.
Hello Leonard, I've been a follower from the start and maybe you recognize some of the comments I've made, I want to thank you for your fun and informative videos and the good advice you've given over time.
I would like to ask for some advice, my brother lives in Kingston upon Hull in England and I live in Colombia (south America), I want to gift him a bicycle for his daily commute, are there any websites and bicycles you can recommend, my budget is below £ 450 and I want to buy a hybrid bike for him, he's not a cyclist but he's been using bikes for his personal transport since he arrived to live in England.
Thanks and best regards
Hello there, that’s very generous of you to give your brother a bike. I’ve had a quick look and my suggestion would be to have a look at the Planet X website. They have some good budget bikes and will be able to send it direct to your brother.
I hope it works out.
@@jollygoodvelo thank you very Much!
I just buy one camera because of the images i saw on your video.
I think keep saying upgrade to 8k and getting the x4 for 8k is misleading as you know you have to reframe so your actual watchable footage from 360 is somewhere between 2.7 and 4K maybe. I’ve owned x2 X3 and now X4 and yes I do think it’s excellent a waterproof Water-sports camera 🥳🥳
I do make this clear in the video but I agree shooting 8k on the X4 is not the same as shooting 8k on a regular camera. The image quality is still pretty impressive, though.
Yes I Agee it’s a great camera, some people have criticised it with the quality of the images but it is better than the X3 and it is the best 360 camera in the market I personally love the fact you can get the exact viewing angle when editing, Just have to be mindful of the protruding lens if you use without the lens covers, enjoyed watching 🥳
Seems like a great sponsored review with emphasis on key selling points. 👍🏻
I like to talk when i am driving like you dit last video.
If you are using this in a car to record audio the camera mics will probably be all you need but if it’s still a little noisy it might be worth investing is some kind of microphone.
A little worried about your impartiality when you quote the running times. The 8K mode is lucky to last 65minutes in the real world.
I’m just quoting the manufacturer’s spec but you are probably right. Battery consumption is very different depending on shooting mode.
So, with the hand gestures, voice control, and increased recording time, the Insta360 X4 is a "pickle tickler!"
Your using that phrase made me laugh!
It certainly tickles my pickle!
👍👍👍👍👍👍
I purchased very first 360 camera, and accessories, replaced once because it refused to initiate software, than, realised that the Micto memory card has to be "special", then realised that battery last maximum 20min, (HD mode) and shuts down because of overheating, then that preview LC with many is so tiny and useless. So... No more 360 products. Naturally they upgraded soft, and hardware many times, but it is so absorbing, disappointing, and costly. No more. Thank you. And you need large internal memory mobile phone to upload your HD files, forget about 4K, 6K to 8K.
I prefer to spend my money on better bike upgrades, and enjoy riding, Even thou I work non stop on various computer hardware and software this 360 gadges are junk.
That may have been the case in the past with previous models but you might be pleasantly surprised if you tried one now.
only one thing stops me from buying this camera - no 60 fps at 2x4k resolution (called 8k)
Ah, sadly that is correct but it’s still a great camera. That’s also a very accurate way of describing the 8k.
